Since the program began, Monsanto has seen
the number of vehicular accidents cut in half
— from nine accidents for every million miles
driven in 2002 to fewer than four in 2003. In
2004, the team worked to lower the accident
rate even further. They focused on reducing
the most common types of accidents.
All Monsanto employees have received
computer-based safety training, and almost
5,000 employees have participated in behindthe-wheel
training. Safety training for mediumand
heavy-vehicle operators is currently
being developed.
Monsanto is also bringing its vehicle safetytraining
expertise to employee families,
industry groups, and community members
including a teen driver program for children
of employees. The World-Class Vehicle
Safety Team has also developed an outreach
version of the training program on CD-ROM.
In addition, members of the team have
acted as consultants for more than 20 other
organizations that are developing their own
driving programs.
BECOMING A SAFETY “STAR”
Monsanto is an active participant in the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s
(OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program.
This program awards a “Star” recognition
to worksites that have implemented comprehensive
and successful safety and health
systems and have achieved injury and illness
rates below their industry’s national average.
The company’s own program, the “Monsanto
Star,” uses similar criteria for sites outside
the United States. Site reviews are conducted
by external auditors to recognize sites with
effective safety management systems. All
Monsanto sites are encouraged to strive for
Star status. A total of 67 sites have been
certified since the program began, and 25
have been added since 2002. Monsanto was
also the first company to earn VPP Stars for
seed-conditioning and seed-research sites.
They included in
this map, along with
manufacturing facilities.
