to play an important role. New products in early development show promise for increasing yields by protecting
crops from drought and other stresses and for improving nutrition — with lower saturated fats and land-based
sources of heart healthy omega-3 oil.
Monsanto has some useful tools to bring to the table. Many others, including governments, non-governmental
groups, scientists, regulators, growers and food companies, are also involved. We’ll need to continue to work
together to effect change. We’re all part of a global team, looking for answers to the same challenges.
Following our Monsanto Pledge commitments, we continue to listen to our customers and other stakeholders.
We work hard to be respectful of people’s concerns and to be transparent about our science, business direction,
and decisions. We recognize that society has legitimate questions about new technology. We all want to be confident
that it is safe and beneficial for people and the environment. We are already delivering benefits to growers and
the environment. Before long, we’ll be delivering them to consumers as well. Increasingly, we are sharing those
benefits with the poor. We’re working together to create a great workplace, and we’re collectively
taking ownership for what we are creating. You will find examples of our work in the
pages of this report.
The challenges ahead are huge. Biotech has the potential to be one part of the solution.
There is still a lot to do, but I am encouraged by the progress we have made and by the
developments under way that will continue to help farmers grow options for the future.
