The Commons
The Cape Cod Academy Monthly Newsletter
January 2009
The Head of School’s Column
Heads of independent schools across the nation have
been writing to their constituents regarding the current
economic downturn and the way their schools are
responding to it. While I had addressed that topic in the
September issue of the Commons, economic conditions
remain unstable so I thought it might be appropriate to
elaborate on how CCA plans to sustain its excellent
fiscal health and academic programs.
First and foremost is our commitment to our mission:
the pursuit of academic excellence and development of
life skills in a safe, values-centered community.
Regardless of the economic landscape, our mission
remains the focus of our efforts, our program, and our
vision for the future. Guided by our four pillars--
honesty, scholarship, respect, and compassion—we
concentrate each day on meeting our mission within a
culture of encouragement that seeks to promote those
virtues within each of us. That daily institutional goal is
accomplished through the effort and focus of teachers
and students striving toward excellence. Financial
resources, tuition revenue and the Annual Fund provide
the tools for attracting and retaining our talented faculty
and the educational materials necessary to challenge and
support our students in all areas of their school
experience.
As has always been our practice, we are controlling
costs as much as possible without diminishing in any
way our academic, athletic, and extracurricular
programs. While that is a challenging goal, there is
much we can do to accomplish it. Soon we will publish
the Commons electronically, saving substantially on
printing and postage while still delivering to each
constituent our monthly newsletter. Interim grades and
report cards will also be sent electronically for similar
savings and efficiency. We have upgraded our copying
equipment to reduce our per copy cost. We have
contracted with an on-line book dealer,
ClassBooks.com, in an effort to reduce the overall cost
of textbooks for students. This service will allow
families to buy school books for their children directly,
on-line, and have them shipped to their homes. In most
cases, used books will be available, and all books will be
discounted. In addition, ClassBooks.com will
buy books back from students at the end of the school
year (beginning this spring!) so families can recoup
some of their textbook costs. This service will allow us
to reduce or eliminate the Books and Materials Fees that
have been part of our annual charges to families, while
reducing overall costs for families as well. You will
receive detailed instructions on how to use this service
later in the spring as we begin planning for the 2009-
2010 school year. The educational institutions we have
talked with as references for ClassBooks have been
thrilled with the results of their service in terms of cost
control, ease of use, efficiency, and customer service.
All of these measures will also reduce the amount of
paper CCA uses, thus contributing to a “greener”
operation as well.
Michael Keene, CCA’s independent auditor from Keane
Chiuve & Co., reported to the Board of Trustees in
November on his completed audit for the 2007-08 fiscal
year. He concluded that CCA’s fiscal health is strong,
our debt-free status is a huge plus in this economy, and
our school’s financial management serves as an example
of how independent schools should operate. The
Finance Committee of our Board of Trustees will, as
they do each year, scrutinize our budget for next year to
be sure we will use our resources as efficiently as
possible. Although none of us can control or predict the
future, we can rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of our
mission with the clear conviction that our students need
and deserve an excellent education whether our
economy is expanding or contracting. So, as we begin
2009, all of the CCA community can feel confident that
our school will emerge in very sound condition from the
current economic downturn and we can be grateful for
many years of conservative, careful financial
management that has prepared us well for the
unexpected.

College Counseling
Seniors should mail any remaining college applications
this month. Parents of seniors applying for financial aid
should be sure to file the appropriate forms (FAFSA and
PROFILE, if required) this month.
Seniors will have a chance to hear from CCA graduates
who are now college students (classes of ’05 – ’08) on
January 7 th , at the annual young alumni luncheon. We
will begin with questions and answers about the
transition from high school to college, then seniors will
have a chance to socialize with the graduates during
lunch.
We would like to extend a special thank you to James
Kugler, CCA ’05, who visited before Thanksgiving
break to talk with sophomores and juniors about
Washington University in St. Louis, where he is a
senior. In particular, James addressed some of our
strongest underclassmen and informed them about the
extraordinary opportunities Wash U. offers in the areas
of medicine, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Voted
“Mr. Wash U.” (for the second time!), James also
explained the advantages of attending a college in a
different area of the country, and we are grateful for his
enthusiasm and insight.
Sophomores and juniors received their PSAT scores
before Christmas vacation, along with their own test
booklet. Faculty reviewed the scores with them,
explaining how the PSAT score report can be used to
prepare for the SAT I test, which juniors will take for the
first time on March 14 th . Juniors can register any time
now for the SAT on www.collegeboard.com. We will
provide instructions and reminders here at school.
Sports Awards...and great
volunteers!
Thank you to Karen Rauss, who is not only our
Parents Association Executive Board Treasurer but
also our Sports Award Ceremony chairperson, for
another great event! The fall sports award
ceremony went smoothly and with great
enthusiasm, not to mention great desserts! Thank
you to everyone who volunteered and helped Karen
with the set up and clean up. This always makes
for a successful event!
“Most parents are delighted by the thought of their children attending college, but many fear they won’t be able to
afford it when the time comes.” So begins an article sent to us by William Durden, president of Dickinson College in
PA. Dickinson is one of over 270 private colleges and universities participating in the Independent 529 (I-529) Plan.
Established in 2003, the I-529 Plan accrues funds on a federal tax-and fee-free basis, allowing parents and grandparents
to buy a portion of future tuition at less than today’s price. “It is critical that parents of younger students begin to save
now,” says President Durden. “Participation in any 529 plan, independent or otherwise, is beneficial and an ideal tool
for parents who are concerned about their ability to afford college.” If you would like to read the complete article about
the I-529 plan, please let us know and we will happily send it to you.

A Note from Admissions
As we come back from the holiday break and face the New
Year, we move into perhaps the most busy and exciting
time of year in the Admissions Office. It is time to meet
with families, and learn all we can about each new
candidate. We also want to be sure that every family with a
child who would benefit by enrolling at CCA learns about
the school and its programs. Since historically the “best
fits” for students at CCA comes from recommendations
made by other CCA families, we would like to enlist our
present and past families to help us inform others of our
school and our commitment to our mission, the pursuit of
academic excellence and development of life skills in a
safe, values-centered community. We invite all of our
families, from the South Shore to the outer Cape, to
encourage their relatives, friends and neighbors to consider
CCA for their child’s education. Nothing makes us happier
than to take a call from an inquiring family that begins,
“We heard about your school from…, who has/have a child
there.”
At this time, we also want to remind people that we are
quickly approaching the deadlines for admissions
decisions. It is time to complete the applications, arrange
for interviews and shadow days, and to ensure that all the
necessary recommendations, grades, and test results are
submitted. For those of you who have or know families
who have kindergarten age children, remember to arrange
for one of the Kindergarten Screening Days on Monday,
February 9, or Tuesday, February 10. Encourage them to
act soon since a family must already have begun the
admissions process, submitting an application, in order to
register for a kindergarten screening. CCA’s enriched
kindergarten program continues to be a full-day program,
one that gives its students a leg up in their elementary
education and beyond.
For many families, even those whose children are
reenrolling, the enrollment process also includes finding
ways to make CCA affordable. This prompts me to remind
families to submit the necessary information to apply for
financial aid for the coming school year. You can call our
office for the booklet to fill out the PFS (Parents’ Financial
Statement). We need that submitted by February 1 in order
for a family to be considered for an award.
I want to remind everyone that all of the awards at CCA are
need-based, so we need the PFS along with copies of tax
forms, due March 15, to determine a family’s ability to
contribute to their child’s education.
Early in the spring, the Financial Aid Committee will meet
to determine awards for returning students and newly
accepted ones. Those families who do not complete the
process, are at a disadvantage. With our limited resources,
we tend to meet the needs of those families who meet the
deadlines, and cannot guarantee that funds will be available
at the same levels later in the year. This is especially
important with requests for financial aid at such a high
level.
In closing, I wish to thank all current parents and students
because you are the best advertisement for CCA. Soon you
will receive a copy of our updated view book, detailing an
education at CCA. We hope that you’ll enjoy the depiction
and feel free to pass it along to interested families.
Additional copies are always available upon request.
Thanks for helping us to spread good words about CCA.
News Around Campus
Congratulations to the 7th grade and their idea of having a
7th grade food drive. In just three weeks, the students and
their families have donated 66 bags of food to the Harwich
Food Pantry. Each week, the students target certain foods
to donate, they bring them in and then on every Friday,
they organize them, bag them and load them into Mrs.
Albis’ trunk to be delivered to the food pantry. Therefore,
the 7th Grade has been responsible for providing food
donations for 33 families in need. The students held a
change drive and collected $250 for A Baby Center in
Hyannis and $100 for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Great job, 7th Grade and Mrs. Albis!
Anthony Salamone, Grade 12, recently attended People to
People International’s seventh annual Global Youth Forum
in Kansas City, MO. Anthony was one of more than 200
students aged 13-18 taking part in the forum, which was
devoted to the theme of “Global Education: Providing a
Vision of the Future.” Anthony is the founding president
of the People to People Peace Chapter at CCA and is a
veteran People to People traveler, having visited six
countries on more than eight trips.
The 9th grade had the pleasure to work with two actors,
Jennie Israel and Jason Bowen, both members of the
resident company of the Actors Shakespeare Project in
Boston. ASP not only produces 5 plays, usually
Shakespeare, during the year but also has a strong
commitment to work with schools. This year they were
awarded a grant to work with schools on the Cape and
CCA was lucky enough to benefit.
