The Redcliffe Dolphins 

host NRL big brothers the 

Brisbane Broncos at Dolphin 

Oval on Saturday, February 

21. 

Both previous outings 

between these two great 

clubs have been particularly 

close encounters. Having 

met in 2008 and 2010 preseasons, 

the Broncos 

managed to get up on both 

occasions 24-22 and 30-20 

respectively. 

Could we be in for more 

of the same when these two 

great rivals go head to head 

once more

Seafood Buffet.

Cracker night for our carols 

WHAT 

magnificent 

weather for our 

annual Dolphins carols 

evening. 

We could not have asked 

for better conditions and the 

people of the Peninsula 

responded, with most 

probably the biggest crowd 

for a number of years. 

Matching the good 

conditions was the fabulous 

entertainment acts and great 

fireworks show. 

It was great to see 

grandparents join parents and 

children for the evening on 

Dolphin Oval and I was 

intrigued by a group of little 

girls nearby who managed to 

dance the entire night away. 

As well as our free 

evening’s entertainment, the 

licensed club also has been 

trading very well over the 

Christmas period with 

patronage up on the previous 

year.

FEBRUARY means the 

start of the football season 

and with that our wonderful 

Dolphins get into stride. 

While much has been 

made of our new players, 

there also have been a few 

changes in the coaching 

ranks. 

Brendan Lam has moved 

up to the Queensland Cup 

level to assist Troy, leaving a 

vacancy in FOGS A grade. 

The football club chose 

Daniel Green to handle the 

side. This is Daniel’s first 

run at this standard, 

although he is a former first 

grade Dolphin and has tried 

his hand at playing-coaching 

at a lower grade. 

We believe that as a good 

communicator and sound 

tactical mind, Daniel has the 

ability to turn out a fine 

coach and is ready to take 

on a side with our club. 

The other appointment 

was Michael Roberts as our 

Colts coach. All Dolphins 

fans would remember 

Michael as one of our greats 

and I for one have been 

waiting eagerly for him to 

join the coaching ranks. 

I’ve known him a long 

time and have high 

expectations for him as a 

coach with his background 

as a teacher sure to serve 

him well with our youngest 

side. 

Giving Michael a hand 

will be former Broncos, 

Cowboys and Melbourne 

prop Robert Tanielu. 

A giant of a man, Robert 

had to retire at 24 because 

of serious neck injuries and 

is bound to provide 

inspiration to the teenagers.

LET’S hope the weather 

stays fine for our trial this 

month at Dolphin Oval 

against the Broncos. 

Like all local league fans, I 

can’t wait to see how our new 

batch of recruits and up-andcoming 

youngsters fare 

against better-credentialled 

opponents on Saturday, 

February 21. 

The players have been 

training hard in this oppressive 

heat in opposed runs against 

each other as well as enduring 

a weekend camp under the 

gaze of coach Troy Lindsay 

and fitness guru Tony 

Guilfoyle. 

Instead of the waves on the 

Sunshine Coast, the squad 

headed last month to the 

Woodford Showgrounds. 

The guys trained up there 

on the Friday night, Saturday 

and Sunday for a short 

session. 

We have gone for size this 

season and football manager 

Grant Cleal certainly has done 

his part in that department. 

The squad contained some 

big units, which we will need 

this season to combat 

powerhouses such as the 

Northern Pride, Wynnum 

Manly and the Blackhawks, 

the newcomers from 

Townsville. 

We have a trial against 

Norths on February 14 before 

all three grades trot out on 

February 21 with everyone 

counting down the day until 

the season proper starts.

Even though I wasn’t 

present, it doesn’t seem that 

long ago that Redcliffe won 

its first Brisbane rugby league 

premiership. 

Many members of the 1965 

grand final side are still with 

us and this year marks the 

50th anniversary of their 

triumph. 

I met the side’s longserving 

and outstanding John 

Treeby last month to start 

planning a couple of functions 

centred around the ’65 team. 

Quite a few of them still live 

in the general area and the 

club has kept track of others

Lorin laps up 

$5200 prize 

LUCKY member Lorin De Cent can 

joke about the circumstances of his 

Birthday Card Draw win. 

“When it came to the draw on the night, 

Toby Tyler from the Country Boys Band 

obviously thought that my Christian name was 

a girl’s name,” Lorin said. 

“He said the first name as it is pronounced 

and I thought I was still in with a chance and 

then he said the prize goes to De Cent and I 

said ‘yeah’. 

“I would have put on a skirt to claim the 

prize.” 

Lorin, membership number 95179, and his 

wife Debra live on the Peninsula and have 

been club members for the past two years and 

are keen devotees of the live entertainment 

scene at the club. 

“We love the food there and also the 

entertainment, whether it’s bands or duos or 

trios,” she said. “We can’t get enough of them.” 

Lorin said it was at the insistence of Debra 

Draw heads to $10,000 

AFTER the excitement of the members draw 

going off twice in three weeks, the tally is now 

steadily building towards $10,000. 

Member Stephen Cooney claimed $9100 on 

August 27 last year and then Sandra Sparrow 

followed up with $6300 on September 10. 

Under the new format, the members draw is 

now held on Thursday nights as well as the 

usual Wednesday evening draw. 

And if the jackpot does not go off, it goes up 

by $100. And that happens each draw night 

until it is won.

It was great to have our Foreign Minister, the Hon. Julie Bishop, in the 

electorate for a morning tea with local residents and business owners. 

The Minister is doing a fantastic job 

in the role, working with the Coalition 

Government to enhance the safety 

and security of Australians.

hosting the event - what a great venue! 

Talent goes rewarded 

IT’S time to get excited because this month 

brings the start of the heats for the Voice 

Your Talent Country and Western Edition. 

Having had two previous successful Voice 

Your Talent competitions, we know that 

there is great singing talent out there. 

Now we want to give locals, especially 

those who love all things country and 

western, the opportunity to share their 

talent with an excited audience. 

We believe that this fantastic talent 

should not go unnoticed or unrewarded. So 

just like the last two, this competition will 

see three gifted locals win prizes for their 

extraordinary talents. 

The winners will each receive a cash prize 

– $1000 for first place, $500 for second and 

$200 for third. 

However, to put a different spin on the 

competition, the country and western theme 

will apply to all aspects. Competitors will be 

required to dress up, sing and perform in 

their best possible country and western 

manner. 

Heats will be taking place between 

February 3 and March 10, giving you plenty 

of time to get in on all the action. 

They will be held on Tuesday nights from 

6pm and places are limited, so be sure to 

register your name with reception as soon as 

possible. 

So why not pull on your riding boots and 

straw hat and come on down for a chance to 

show your talent and possibly win a bit of 

cash.

How things have changed 

within 12 months. With the help 

of all the life members who 

assisted in guiding a rather 

unsteady ship through a turbulent 

six months, events culminated 

with a very well attended AGM 

where a new executive was voted 

in and also a couple of very 

welcome additions to the 

committee. 

Thank you to the members for 

their show of support in electing 

myself as president with Shane 

Mackay installed as a very able 

vice, Glenn Mason is the new 

secretary with Dave Isles once 

again putting his hand up as 

treasurer and we were all very 

grateful with Neil Okumura once 

again a very worthy patron. 

We welcome Keith Boardman, 

Redcliffe Old Boys 

aka “Ratso”, Marty Torrington, 

Dean Halpin and Paul Van de 

Weyer as new boys who will 

certainly bring a wealth of 

experience and passion to the Old 

Boys committee. 

We also thank Ken Hart, Des 

Ross and Graeme Hirst in 

stepping down for their service. 

A couple of highlights from 

last year, with one being the kids’ 

Christmas tree which was held at 

Talobilla, where owing to the 

weather and a couple of minor 

hiccups Santa had to arrive early, 

which certainly caught him and 

his reindeer off guard. 

I wonder whether this was due 

to the event being alcohol-free 

until the kids were treated to 

lunch and received their presents 

The next was of course the annual 

dinner and awards night was once 

again a resounding success. 

Special thanks to our emcee Peter 

Robinson and Jon Sloan, who 

provided the video highlights for 

the night. 

Congratulations to Aaron 

Whitchurch for taking out the 

Best and Fairest and also the Jack 

Charlesworth Award, Nathan 

Rees the Rising Star and also 

Oliver Regan who was presented 

with the Dick Boxsell Trophy by 

Dick’s grandson Brody. 

I’ll take this opportunity to 

wish everybody who pulls on a 

Dolphin jersey this year all the 

best for a great and injury-free 

season. Hope the ball bounces

HALFBACK Luke Capewell returns to Dolphin Oval 

with a winning culture firmly under his belt. 

The cagey playmaker has 

spent the past year and a half 

with NRL club Penrith, 

guiding their NSW Cup side 

around the park and into two 

grand finals last season. 

The Panthers took on the 

Newcastle Knights in the 

feeder competition decider 

after enjoying a stellar season 

in which they won 22 of their 

last 24 matches. 

The Panthers completely 

dominated Newcastle, triumphing 

48-12 to move on to the 

second-tier “Superbowl” 

match against Intrust Super 

Cup winners the Northern 

Pride as a curtain-raiser to the 

South Sydney-Bulldogs NRL 

grand final. 

History shows the Pride 

became the inaugural state 

champions but not before a 

gigantic arm wrestle in which 

Penrith led 28-16 with 30 

minutes to go, only to lose 

32-28. 

“I had a good year last 

season with Penrith in which 

we won one grand final and 

lost the other,” said Capewell, 

26 this month. 

“I really enjoyed my time 

there but it’s good to be 

home.” 

With 40 NRL appearances 

to his credit with South

Brisbane, Capewell brings

halfback, Capewell said 

halfback was his slot for the 

2015 season. 

“Halfback is definitely my 

go,” he stated. “From what 

I’ve seen on the training 

paddock, we have some pretty 

big boys for this season. 

They’re training well but it’s 

another story on how we go 

on the field. 

“I definitely feel at home at 

Redcliffe. When my time in 

Sydney was up, it was an easy 

decision to come home. 

Crusher Cleal contacted me 

and I told him that the 

Dolphins was where I wanted 

to be.” 

Capewell admitted most of 

the playing contingent were 

new to him, although fullback 

Joe Bond has followed the 

same path as him and returned 

from NSW Cup club the 

Mounties.

A second shot 

AARON Whitchurch 

contemplated retirement 12 

months ago but some hard 

work and recovery has 

given him a chance to 

reignite his NRL career. 

Whitchurch played three 

NRL games by the age of 21 

but a long-term back injury 

helped end his association 

with the Broncos at the end 

of 2013. 

After coming right 

through the Broncos' junior 

ranks, Whitchurch faced an 

uncertain injury future and 

putting his playing boots 

away for good was an 

option. 

But Whitchurch knuckled 

down and showed he was 

worth another chance with 

a strong season in the 

Queensland Cup with the 

Dolphins last year. It has 

earned him a place back in 

the Broncos squad. 

“I worked hard in the last 

off-season to get my back 

right,” said Whitchurch. “It 

wasn’t the best season for 

Redcliffe last year but 

individually I had a good 

year. 

“I had surgery at the end 

of 2012 and in 2013 I really 

struggled with it. I was 

contemplating whether I

should play footy or not. 

“But I just worked hard 

on it in the last off-season 

and it came good. I just 

needed the recovery and I 

am enjoying my footy 

again.” 

Being forced to look for a 

full-time job and become a 

semi-professional footballer 

certainly had its effect on 

Whitchurch. 

He realised how close he 

had come and was 

determined to have another 

crack at the NRL. 

Now he just wants to give 

himself the best chance 

possible at working his way 

back into the Broncos' top 

team. 

“I had the year off and 

was playing at Redcliffe and 

landscaping for work, so it 

was a bit different,” he said. 

“It is good to be back, 

really good during an 

exciting period for the 

Broncos. Having to work for 

a year and do some physical 

work, and then having to go 

and train in the afternoons, 

that gives you some 

perspective. 

“It just teaches you to 

work hard because you are 

living the dream playing 

with the Broncos.”
