Rogers School has an ever growing list of structural and systemic failures affecting the safety of all students. Wood School, while newer, has its own list of significant issues that require a long term solution. Neither school provides the facilities to meet today’s standards in order to provide a quality education to all Fairhaven students. Fairhaven is moving in the direction of solving the problem by providing a new model school on the Wood School site. This project was named as the preferred solution after a thorough feasibility study, and was overwhelmingly supported by the recent town meeting vote. The one school solution has also been unanimously approved by votes taken by the School Building Committee, School Committee, and the Board of Selectmen. A group of concerned Fairhaven residents who are committed to the successful completion of this project have come together to form YES for Fairhaven. This group was created to inform residents on the facts of this decision and encourage all voters to vote YES on the expected ballot question to approve the construction of the new school. The membership of this group has carefully reviewed all the facts available about the existing problem and remained informed on the progress of the School Building Committee. YES for Fairhaven has concluded that building a new model school at the Wood School site is the most cost-effective means to provid - ing the right educational opportuni - ties to all Fairhaven elementary school students. YES for Fairhaven has launched a website to serve as a resource for the voters of Fairhaven to make their decision based on the facts at www.YESforFairhaven.org. This site contains project updates, the facts as well as an extensive question and answer section detailing the entire process. New digs, still that yummy chocolate aroma By Beth David Editor Dorothy Cox’s Chocolates official - ly moved into its new retail space in the Fairhaven Center for Business, 63 Alden Road, Fairhaven (across from WalMart), on Monday, 8/22. The family owned candy making business began in 1928 when Dorothy Cox started making candy in her kitchen. The manufaturing and retail opera - tions had been located in the same building on Huttleston Avenue since 1957. The famliy recently announced the move to expand their facilities. The manufacturing operation is now located in Wareham. According to Francis Cox, Jr., the move was necessary to expand production. He said 80% of the business is now wholesale and the little shop on Huttleston Avenue just could not keep up anymore. The wholesale business includes creating and selling candies to large retailers like Trader Joe’s and smaller shops throughout the region. Mr. Cox said the company also creates candy labels for corporations, charities, and special promotions. The old facility was approximately 800 square feet. The new retail space is approximately 3,000 sf, and the manufacturing facility is 11,000 sf.
