From The Editor WEST ISLAND — A day late and many dollars short. Well, last week was about Hurricane Bob, next week might be about Hurricane Irene (see page 17), which is aimed right for us as I write this. It’s not supposed to get here until late Sunday, though, so anything can Beth David, Publisher happen between now and then. Meanwhile, places south of us are getting pummeled. We’ll be out there taking pictures and getting your stories if Irene makes an appearance here, but we can’t be everywhere, so be sure to send in your pictures and stories after the storm. Speaking of which....no Bob stories Really C’mon, I know people out there have great stories. Not a one for the local free rag I know you have blackout stories and stranded stories, and ... other stuff. Speaking of blackouts. We had a power outage on Sunday night when someone crashed into a pole on the Neck (see page 17). I took a little walk during it and it was very eerie. No lights at all. I have always hated the light at the end of my driveway. Light pollution is definitely one of my pet peeves. I’ve got admit, though, that having no lights at all on my little street was creepy. Just creepy. It was very quiet, too, until someone’s generator started up. Then it sounded like an industrial zone. Geesh. Can’t they come up with something a little quieter. From creeped out to annoyed in two seconds flat. Our cover story this week is a hoot! I didn’t make it to the event myself, but I saw the crews as they made their way back from the beach and I saw the You Tube video by Kevin Hodson. It’s very West Island to say the least. The Wacky Boats have to be assembled on the beach and nothing that a “real” boat would use can be part of it. Young Zach Dean used a snow shovel as a paddle. I’m sorry I missed it. There’s always next year, though, right See page 16 for that. Well, time to wrap it up. I need food. I’m going to go to my back yard and pick a couple of tomatoes and a couple of cucumbers. There’s nothing like taking food from your own back yard. It’s such a short amount of time we’re able to do that. Meanwhile, you can always go to the farmers market at the high school on Sundays. See page 16 for a story on their latest special event: farm day. Well, time to go. Oh, right, there’s some meeting coverage in here: BPW on page 12 and Conservation Commission on page 22. And a couple of letters to the editor (page 25) and a press release from a new group that formed to support the new one-school option (page 26). Annual Fort Phoenix Road Race coming up fast Press Release The 22th annual Fort Phoenix 5K Road Race/Walk will be held on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m., rain or shine. Start/finish is at Fort Phoenix State Beach in Fairhaven. Non-competitive walk to take place concurrently with the run. All proceeds from the walk will benefit Cameron’s Kids, a non-profit charitable corporation, which is tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Proceeds from the run benefit various charities/causes within our community. List is available upon request. The end of summer means it is time again for the Our Lady of Angels Feast! We are once again in need of volunteers. At the Malassadas and Clam Cake and French Fry Booth we are looking to have some fun and raise some finances for the many charities that the Feast assists within the community. The Feast begins on Saturday September third at 5pm and goes till The course is a fast wheelmeasured course through South Fairhaven. Professional Race Timing by JB Race Management. Amenities: T-shirts to the first 150 entrants; food and drink to all participants. Entry Fee is $15 (prior to race day); Post-Entry is $20 (Day of Race) Race Day Special: Bring five road race shirts in good condition for donation and race entry is $15 Entry-fees are non-refundable.
