The <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> is a vibrant learning community grounded in <strong>the</strong> spirit and tradition <strong>of</strong><br />

College Overview<br />

The <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> is <strong>the</strong> oldest girls' secondary school in Vic<strong>to</strong>ria, having been<br />

established by <strong>the</strong> Sisters <strong>of</strong> Mercy in 1857. From 1857 until <strong>the</strong> present day, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> has existed<br />

on its original site in Nicholson Street, Fitzroy. The foundress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> was<br />

Mo<strong>the</strong>r Ursula Frayne who is buried on <strong>the</strong> site.<br />

While <strong>the</strong> College is rich in his<strong>to</strong>ry and tradition, it also provides a modern and dynamic environment <strong>to</strong><br />

lead <strong>the</strong> students in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> future and prepare <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong>ir life journey.<br />

The <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> endeavours <strong>to</strong> promote <strong>the</strong> Catholic faith and philosophy and <strong>to</strong><br />

provide an environment in which <strong>the</strong> girls develop spiritually, physically, emotionally and intellectually,<br />

according <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel <strong>of</strong> Jesus Christ.<br />

The College <strong>of</strong>fers a most comprehensive range <strong>of</strong> subjects both academic and practical and<br />

caters for approximately 650 students from Years 7 – 12 who come from a wide area <strong>of</strong> Melbourne.<br />

A Mercy School<br />

The <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> is one <strong>of</strong> several Catholic secondary colleges owned and<br />

administered by <strong>the</strong> Sisters <strong>of</strong> Mercy.<br />

As a community <strong>of</strong> believers, each Mercy school strives <strong>to</strong> proclaim <strong>the</strong> message <strong>of</strong> Jesus through <strong>the</strong><br />

distinctive spirituality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sisters <strong>of</strong> Mercy. This spirituality is marked by faith in Jesus Christ,<br />

commitment <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> primacy <strong>of</strong> love, an understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world informed by faith and <strong>the</strong> celebration<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eucharist in union with <strong>the</strong> poor and suffering. It is also marked by a devotion <strong>to</strong> <strong>Mary</strong>, Mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

God and Mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Mercy, a trust in God's loving providence, a respect for <strong>the</strong> dignity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human<br />

person and a strong sense <strong>of</strong> social justice.<br />

Each Mercy Secondary School strives <strong>to</strong> reflect in its structures, curriculum and practices and in <strong>the</strong><br />

quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relationships within it, <strong>the</strong> particular spirit <strong>of</strong> mercy with Jesus lived and taught. Each<br />

school endeavours <strong>to</strong> reflect its commitment <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>se values by expressing its unity and solidarity with<br />

<strong>the</strong> poor, <strong>the</strong> unemployed, <strong>the</strong> distressed and <strong>the</strong> marginalized through its service <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> community.<br />

Through <strong>the</strong>ir faithfulness <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> Ca<strong>the</strong>rine McAuley's vision, Mercy schools work <strong>to</strong> provide a<br />

Catholic Education which enables <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole person imbued with those values which<br />

Ca<strong>the</strong>rine exemplified.<br />

And <strong>the</strong> challenge <strong>to</strong>day remains <strong>the</strong> same - <strong>to</strong> integrate successfully in <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel all <strong>the</strong><br />

different aspects <strong>of</strong> human knowledge and <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> those Christian virtues which will enable <strong>the</strong><br />

students <strong>to</strong> live a full life in Christ. This challenge calls forth <strong>the</strong> very best that is in all <strong>of</strong> us - parents,<br />

students, staff and all those who contribute <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College.<br />

Principal’s <strong>Report</strong><br />

At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second week <strong>of</strong> school this year one <strong>of</strong> our new Year 7 students wrote <strong>of</strong> her<br />

aspirations:<br />

“I would like <strong>to</strong> make some more friends and get used <strong>to</strong> life at secondary school. Most <strong>of</strong> all I am<br />

looking forward <strong>to</strong> becoming a Mercy girl.”<br />

At <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> we are conscious that Mercy is a calling <strong>to</strong> be lived and renewed each day. Our<br />

students are proud <strong>to</strong> be women <strong>of</strong> Mercy and celebrate this joyfully at every moment but particularly on<br />

Mercy day. Their involvement in social justice activities is a practical expression <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Mercy spirit.<br />

<strong>2011</strong> saw <strong>the</strong> Inaugural Young Mercy Leaders’ Pilgrimage <strong>to</strong> Dublin, followed by participation in World<br />

Youth Day in Madrid. 22 students from 9 Mercy schools participated in this enriching experience. What<br />

a joy it was <strong>to</strong> be in <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> committed, faith filled students! At <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pilgrimage<br />

<strong>the</strong> students expressed a desire <strong>to</strong> invite one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> keynote speakers, Sr Marilyn Lacey, <strong>to</strong> Australia.<br />

This dream became a reality and we were privileged <strong>to</strong> host Sr Marilyn in March 2012 and <strong>to</strong> learn<br />

about <strong>the</strong> organization she founded, Mercy Beyond Borders. In Sr Marilyn we witnessed Mercy in<br />

Action. We look forward <strong>to</strong> supporting her work in <strong>the</strong> future.<br />

The provision <strong>of</strong> opportunities for prayer and for participation in <strong>the</strong> sacramental life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church is <strong>of</strong><br />

paramount importance at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> and all key events continue <strong>to</strong> be<br />

acknowledged through <strong>the</strong> celebration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eucharist. We <strong>of</strong>fer grateful thanks <strong>to</strong> our College<br />

Chaplain, Fr Peter Varengo, for his ongoing support and constant availability.<br />

The focus <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>2011</strong> year at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> was on “Teaching and Learning.” This<br />

may seem a strange statement <strong>to</strong> make given that we are an educational institution and that Teaching<br />

and Learning is our core business but in <strong>2011</strong> this was identified as a priority area and we worked<br />

strategically and with significant and sustained energy <strong>to</strong> meet our identified goal:<br />

“The <strong>Academy</strong> is a vibrant learning community which equips all members for <strong>the</strong> promise and challenge<br />

<strong>of</strong> a constantly evolving future.”<br />

In <strong>2011</strong> our emphasis continued <strong>to</strong> be on Contemporary Learning - engaged learning. Our vision in this<br />

area was <strong>to</strong> incorporate a curriculum based on learning continuums, high expectations <strong>of</strong> student<br />

performance, explicit instruction <strong>of</strong> essential learnings and a flexible and technologically rich learning<br />

environment that allowed students <strong>to</strong> explore meaning and develop deep understandings. A fur<strong>the</strong>r aim<br />

was <strong>to</strong> provide access <strong>to</strong> technological learning spaces and portals <strong>to</strong> promote learning environments<br />

and pedagogy that were student centred and personalized.<br />

The College continued its involvement in <strong>the</strong> AGQTP (Australian Government Quality Teaching<br />

Project) – “Student Centred Learning, Engaging Students in Learning and Teaching in a Contemporary<br />

World”. Our aims for <strong>the</strong> project were <strong>to</strong> establish a Contemporary Learning Street at <strong>the</strong> Year 7 level, <strong>to</strong><br />

train students and staff in <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> significant e-Learning <strong>to</strong>ols and <strong>to</strong> develop contemporary units<br />

within departments.<br />

The Year 7 Learning Street has been an exciting development and has transformed a traditional<br />

classroom area in<strong>to</strong> a colourful learning space with triangular group tables replacing <strong>the</strong> traditional<br />

rows <strong>of</strong> desks, <strong>the</strong> installation <strong>of</strong> interactive whiteboards (all classrooms in <strong>the</strong> College have interactive<br />

whiteboards), lap<strong>to</strong>p trolleys and break out spaces with retractable walls. Students have benefited from<br />

this change and staff have ensured that <strong>the</strong> space is used <strong>to</strong> its full potential.<br />

Teaching staff were supported in <strong>the</strong>ir work through an extensive program <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional learning<br />

organized and conducted by <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> e-Learning and through <strong>the</strong> allocation <strong>of</strong> significant time <strong>to</strong><br />

develop contemporary learning units. Pr<strong>of</strong>essional learning has been embedded even more thoroughly<br />

in 2012 with students being dismissed early on 8 occasions throughout <strong>the</strong> year – thus giving staff <strong>the</strong><br />

opportunity for additional pr<strong>of</strong>essional learning both whole school based and within departments.<br />

All Heads <strong>of</strong> Departments and Year Level Coordina<strong>to</strong>rs - Middle Management Leaders - have<br />

undertaken pr<strong>of</strong>essional learning with <strong>the</strong> aim <strong>of</strong> assisting <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> hone <strong>the</strong>ir leadership skills and<br />

develop effective teams.<br />

<strong>2011</strong> also saw <strong>the</strong> successful introduction <strong>of</strong> two VET subjects, Interactive Digital Media and Music at<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. These two subjects sit alongside <strong>the</strong> VET programs <strong>of</strong>fered through <strong>the</strong> Inner Melbourne<br />

VET Cluster and our VCAL program as important senior learning pathways for students.<br />

Our fruitful and mutually enriching relationship with Simonds College continues <strong>to</strong> grow providing <strong>the</strong><br />

opportunity for both schools <strong>to</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer a wider range <strong>of</strong> VCE subjects as well as ensuring <strong>the</strong>re were male<br />

leads in <strong>the</strong> <strong>2011</strong> College Musical, “Grease”!<br />

Our new College website was ano<strong>the</strong>r exciting development encapsulating <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ry and spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> through <strong>the</strong> visual as well as <strong>the</strong> written mediums. The website highlights <strong>the</strong> richness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>Community</strong> - students, staff, parents, College Advisory Council Members, Parents’<br />

Association Members and College Alumnae - a diverse yet united community – a happy community.<br />

Our Homeroom structure and pas<strong>to</strong>ral care programs continue <strong>to</strong> be important vehicles <strong>to</strong> assist us in<br />

our desire “<strong>to</strong> form centred women who are resilient and have a sense <strong>of</strong> social responsibility in <strong>the</strong><br />

tradition <strong>of</strong> Mercy” (College Mission Statement)<br />

In 2012 <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> is celebrating 155 years – “155@88” – ano<strong>the</strong>r significant miles<strong>to</strong>ne.<br />

I thank all who form <strong>the</strong> spirited and dynamic community that is <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> and I<br />

pray that we will all continue <strong>to</strong> walk in <strong>the</strong> footsteps <strong>of</strong> our foundress, Ursula Frayne.<br />

Church Authority <strong>Report</strong><br />

Mercy Education Limited (Mercy Education) is <strong>the</strong> delegated authority which oversees <strong>the</strong> operation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Education ministry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Sisters <strong>of</strong> Mercy <strong>of</strong> Australia and Papua New Guinea<br />

(ISMAPNG).<br />

In November <strong>2011</strong>, Mercy Education, a company limited by guarantee and constituted under <strong>the</strong><br />

Corporations Act 2001 (Cth), became registered with ASIC. Prior <strong>to</strong> this and from 1997, Mercy<br />

Education operated as Mercy Secondary Education Inc (MSEI), an incorporated association under<br />

Vic<strong>to</strong>rian State legislation and served <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> education ministry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former Melbourne<br />

Congregation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sisters <strong>of</strong> Mercy.<br />

Through its Board <strong>of</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>rs, Mercy Education is responsible for <strong>the</strong> governance and operation <strong>of</strong> ten<br />

(10) Mercy sponsored Colleges owned by ISMAPNG. Mercy Education is <strong>the</strong> Employer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Principal<br />

and staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se ten Mercy Colleges.<br />

The Mercy Education Limited Board sets policies, appoints Principals, approves senior leadership<br />

positions and fulfills due diligence in <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> finance and audit management, capital development,<br />

risk management and litigation.<br />

The existence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mercy Education Limited Association gives strength, support and solidarity <strong>to</strong> each<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> member Mercy schools - staff, students, College Advisory Councils and parents – as <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong><br />

Mercy Education continues in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> future.<br />

College Board <strong>Report</strong><br />

The <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> College Advisory Council is an Advisory Council with Mercy<br />

Education Ltd being <strong>the</strong> governing body.<br />

Preamble<br />

The College Council provides advice and support <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Principal and <strong>the</strong> Staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College. Members<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College Council are valued for <strong>the</strong>ir wisdom and <strong>the</strong> contribution <strong>the</strong>y make <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> functioning <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> College and work <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> ensure that <strong>the</strong> Mercy Ethos underpins <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College.<br />

Purposes<br />

The purposes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council are as follows:-<br />

(a) To act as a consultative Council for <strong>the</strong> College and <strong>the</strong> Principal in <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> Catholic<br />

education.<br />

(b) To promote <strong>the</strong> Mercy ethos and <strong>to</strong> ensure <strong>the</strong> charism is alive and central <strong>to</strong> all<br />

deliberations.<br />

(c) To assist <strong>the</strong> Principal and staff in policy making, including <strong>the</strong> formulation <strong>of</strong> foundational<br />

documents.<br />

(d) To assist in <strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College budget and <strong>to</strong> recommend its adoption.<br />

(e) To provide advice concerning <strong>the</strong> financial administration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College. This could include<br />

supporting <strong>the</strong> Principal with fund raising activities organised by auxiliary bodies associated<br />

with <strong>the</strong> College.<br />

(f) To give such practical support <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> College as required in matters such as capital<br />

development, <strong>the</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong> College facilities and equipment.<br />

(g) To take part in <strong>the</strong> strategic planning for <strong>the</strong> future operations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College.<br />

(h) To assist generally in developing relationships both within <strong>the</strong> College community and<br />

between <strong>the</strong> College and <strong>the</strong> wider community.<br />

(i) To facilitate <strong>the</strong> welcome <strong>of</strong> parents and children new <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> College.<br />

(j) To develop strategies for <strong>the</strong> local promotion <strong>of</strong> Catholic education.<br />

Goals & Intended Outcomes<br />

The religious dimension <strong>of</strong> Christian life and experience underpins every aspect <strong>of</strong> life at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

We endeavour <strong>to</strong> develop in each student a spirituality and an ethical framework that enables her <strong>to</strong> live<br />

a faith-filled, active life. This spirituality, based on <strong>the</strong> witness <strong>of</strong> Jesus and <strong>the</strong> role modeling <strong>of</strong> both<br />

staff and students, is respectful <strong>of</strong> diverse faith traditions and cultures and is lived with a generous spirit<br />

We are committed <strong>to</strong> a tradition <strong>of</strong> scholastic excellence and <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> a wide range <strong>of</strong> cocurricular<br />

‣ <strong>2011</strong> was deemed <strong>the</strong> “Year <strong>of</strong> Teaching and Learning” and <strong>the</strong> College worked strategically and<br />

with significant and sustained energy <strong>to</strong> meet our goals in this area.<br />

‣ College involvement in an action research project – AGQTP (Australian Government Quality<br />

Teaching Project) a Contemporary Learning project – “Student Centered Learning, Engaging<br />

Students in Learning and Teaching In a Contemporary World.”<br />

<strong>Academy</strong>. These two subjects sit alongside <strong>the</strong> VET programs <strong>of</strong>fered through <strong>the</strong> Inner Melbourne<br />

VET Cluster and our VCAL program as important senior learning pathways for students.<br />

‣ Continued development <strong>of</strong> VCAL Partnerships with outside agencies – <strong>of</strong>fering <strong>of</strong> programs and<br />

certificate courses.<br />

‣ Implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year 7 Learning Street.<br />

‣ Enhanced use <strong>of</strong> technology across <strong>the</strong> College.<br />

PROPORTION OF STUDENTS MEETING NATIONAL BENCHMARKS AT YEARS 7 AND 9<br />

<strong>Academy</strong> students participate in <strong>the</strong> NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy)<br />

tests conducted by <strong>the</strong> VCAA for students in Years 7 and 9.<br />

The NAPLAN for Years 7 and 9 students assess competencies in <strong>the</strong> following areas: Reading, Writing,<br />

Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy and provide <strong>the</strong> percentages <strong>of</strong> students who met<br />

<strong>the</strong> national benchmark .<br />

The data does not include students who were exempt from participating in <strong>the</strong> NAPLAN, nor those who<br />

were absent at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> its implementation.<br />

The NAPLAN results over <strong>the</strong> last 3 years reflect a consistently high portion <strong>of</strong> students at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> at or above <strong>the</strong> National Minimum Standards in <strong>the</strong> Literacy and Numeracy areas.<br />

The <strong>Academy</strong> is an open entry school and does not exclude students who may have learning difficulties<br />

and school refusal issues.<br />

The College has targeted both curriculum areas, Literacy and Numeracy, with strategic planning and<br />

curriculum initiatives <strong>to</strong> help maintain <strong>the</strong> high level <strong>of</strong> achievement that is evident at Year 7 level and<br />

<strong>to</strong> lead <strong>to</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r student development and improvement at Year 9 level.<br />

The Learning Support Department has strategically placed learning teams amongst <strong>the</strong> year levels <strong>to</strong><br />

specifically target students with learning needs and those with disengagement issues. For those<br />

students with learning needs <strong>the</strong>re has been <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> specific learning programs including<br />

individual learning plans.<br />

In Ma<strong>the</strong>matics, <strong>the</strong> College’s involvement in <strong>the</strong> Purposeful Teaching in Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Project in 2009<br />

and 2010 has led <strong>to</strong> particular strategies being introduced <strong>to</strong> enhance <strong>the</strong> numeracy levels <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

College.<br />

The Tables shows three successive years, 2009 <strong>to</strong> <strong>2011</strong>, <strong>of</strong> Year 7 NAPLAN results at <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong>. The <strong>2011</strong> cohort <strong>of</strong> Year 7 students achieved equal or higher levels in all areas when<br />

compared with <strong>the</strong> previous two years, demonstrating a consistent and sustained performance across<br />

all areas.<br />

While changes across year levels may only reflect difference between various cohorts ra<strong>the</strong>r than a<br />

significant increase or decline in student performance, <strong>the</strong> Year 7 NAPLAN results for <strong>2011</strong> are<br />

never<strong>the</strong>less particularly pleasing when compared with past years.<br />

The Table shows three successive years, 2009 <strong>to</strong> <strong>2011</strong>, <strong>of</strong> Year 9 NAPLAN results at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong>. The <strong>2011</strong> cohort <strong>of</strong> Year 9 students achieved higher results in reading and numeracy<br />

compared with <strong>the</strong> past two years but achieved slightly lower results in grammar and punctuation when<br />

compared with 2019 and 2010 and slightly lower results in writing and spelling when compared with <strong>the</strong><br />

2009 cohort.<br />

STUDENT ATTENDANCE<br />

At <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> roll marking is completed by an electronic roll marking system.<br />

Rolls are completed by homeroom teachers both morning and afternoon, and by subject teachers at<br />

each timetabled lesson. An SMS alert is sent <strong>to</strong> parents if students are absent for Morning Homeroom.<br />

Student attendance is reported as a percentage based on <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> minutes present in class.<br />

The average attendance rate for students at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> is:<br />

embraces a number <strong>of</strong> areas including – Timetable, Daily organization, Website development and<br />

maintenance, Intranet Co-ordination. Establishing this position has enabled <strong>the</strong> streamlining <strong>of</strong> a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> smaller organizational areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> one position and provided <strong>the</strong> staff<br />

with one reference point. Given that this position is also a Leadership Team position, <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

School Operations is able <strong>to</strong> provide ready and timely information <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Leadership Team.<br />

The <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> employs 86 staff - 60 teachers 26 support staff. The average<br />

attendance rate/average number <strong>of</strong> days attended per teaching staff member expressed as a<br />

percentage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>tal number <strong>of</strong> days teaching staff were required <strong>to</strong> be in attendance was as<br />

indicated below.<br />

These figures include staff on leave, including extended leave. If<br />

teachers on long service, maternity leave, leave without pay and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r extended leave were removed from <strong>the</strong> calculation, <strong>the</strong> actual<br />

staff especially long standing staff. We welcome staff new <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> College and are confident <strong>the</strong>y will add<br />

At <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> staff undertake a diversity <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Learning activities.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Learning is strongly encouraged at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> and significant<br />

resources are allocated <strong>to</strong> support all staff in <strong>the</strong>ir pr<strong>of</strong>essional learning. Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Learning planning<br />

During <strong>2011</strong> all teaching staff participated in 4 Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Learning days held at <strong>the</strong> College – 1 day<br />

focusing on spirituality, and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r 3 days focusing aspects <strong>of</strong> teaching and learning. The Head <strong>of</strong> e-<br />

Learning has also conducted significant Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Learning for all teaching staff in this important area.<br />

The Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Faith and Mission also conducted voluntary sessions for those staff seeking <strong>to</strong> gain <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
