College Overview<br />

The <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> is <strong>the</strong> oldest girls' secondary school in Vic<strong>to</strong>ria, having been<br />

established by <strong>the</strong> Sisters <strong>of</strong> Mercy in 1857. From 1857 until <strong>the</strong> present day, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> has existed<br />

on its original site in Nicholson Street, Fitzroy. The foundress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> was<br />

Mo<strong>the</strong>r Ursula Frayne who is buried on <strong>the</strong> site.<br />

While <strong>the</strong> College is rich in his<strong>to</strong>ry and tradition, it also provides a modern and dynamic environment <strong>to</strong><br />

lead <strong>the</strong> students in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> future and prepare <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong>ir life journey.<br />

The <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> endeavours <strong>to</strong> promote <strong>the</strong> Catholic faith and philosophy and <strong>to</strong><br />

provide an environment in which <strong>the</strong> girls develop spiritually, physically, emotionally and intellectually,<br />

according <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel <strong>of</strong> Jesus Christ.<br />

The College <strong>of</strong>fers a most comprehensive range <strong>of</strong> subjects both academic and practical and<br />

caters for approximately 650 students from Years 7 – 12 who come from a wide area <strong>of</strong> Melbourne.<br />

A Mercy School<br />

The <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>Immaculate</strong> is one <strong>of</strong> several Catholic secondary colleges owned and<br />

administered by <strong>the</strong> Sisters <strong>of</strong> Mercy.<br />

As a community <strong>of</strong> believers, each Mercy school strives <strong>to</strong> proclaim <strong>the</strong> message <strong>of</strong> Jesus through <strong>the</strong><br />

distinctive spirituality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sisters <strong>of</strong> Mercy. This spirituality is marked by faith in Jesus Christ,<br />

commitment <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> primacy <strong>of</strong> love, an understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world informed by faith and <strong>the</strong> celebration<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eucharist in union with <strong>the</strong> poor and suffering. It is also marked by a devotion <strong>to</strong> <strong>Mary</strong>, Mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

God and Mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Mercy, a trust in God's loving providence, a respect for <strong>the</strong> dignity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human<br />

person and a strong sense <strong>of</strong> social justice.<br />

Each Mercy Secondary School strives <strong>to</strong> reflect in its structures, curriculum and practices and in <strong>the</strong><br />

quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relationships within it, <strong>the</strong> particular spirit <strong>of</strong> mercy with Jesus lived and taught. Each<br />

school endeavours <strong>to</strong> reflect its commitment <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>se values by expressing its unity and solidarity with<br />

<strong>the</strong> poor, <strong>the</strong> unemployed, <strong>the</strong> distressed and <strong>the</strong> marginalized through its service <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> community.<br />

Through <strong>the</strong>ir faithfulness <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> Ca<strong>the</strong>rine McAuley's vision, Mercy schools work <strong>to</strong> provide a<br />

Catholic Education which enables <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole person imbued with those values which<br />

Ca<strong>the</strong>rine exemplified.<br />

And <strong>the</strong> challenge <strong>to</strong>day remains <strong>the</strong> same - <strong>to</strong> integrate successfully in <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel all <strong>the</strong><br />

different aspects <strong>of</strong> human knowledge and <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> those Christian virtues which will enable <strong>the</strong><br />

students <strong>to</strong> live a full life in Christ. This challenge calls forth <strong>the</strong> very best that is in all <strong>of</strong> us - parents,<br />

students, staff and all those who contribute <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College.<br />
