ACADEMY OF MARY IMMACULATE, FITZROY Education in Faith Goals & Intended Outcomes The religious dimension of Christian life and experience underpins every aspect of life at the Academy. We endeavour to develop in each student a spirituality and an ethical framework that enables her to live a faith-filled, active life. This spirituality, based on the witness of Jesus and the role modeling of both staff and students, is respectful of diverse faith traditions and cultures and is lived with a generous spirit of service for others. We are committed to providing our students with experiences that help them to explore and extend their faith, to carry on the tradition of Mercy and to pursue authentic decision-making. Catherine McAuley’s charism, exemplified in the spirit and tradition of Mercy, is brought to life in our encounters within the classroom, our sacramental moments and our commitment to social justice. CATHOLIC IDENTITY Goal: The Academy affirms and proclaims its Catholic identity while respecting the personal spirituality of each community member. Outcomes a. A shared understanding by all members of the Academy community of our Vision, Mission and Values and our identity as a faith filled community grounded in the Mercy charism and the Catholic tradition b. The faith and spirituality of each member of the College community being nurtured and supported. c. A community hallmarked by respect and openness to people of all cultural traditions and religious backgrounds. d. The Religious Education curriculum and pedagogy is engaging, relevant and dynamic. MERCY CHARISM AND TRADITION Goal: The Academy is a Mercy community that calls all members into its charism, values and tradition. Outcomes a. A community grounded in the spirit and tradition of Mercy. b. Accessibility to the history of Mercy as it has been lived at the Academy. c. Young women who possess a strong sense of social responsibility and a commitment to social justice. d. An education that critically examines society’s values and nurtures the spiritual, personal and academic growth of its students, preparing them for a faith-filled, active life of service. Achievements ‣ Our Vision, Mission and Values Statement continues to be the guiding statement of the College and the basis of all decision making. It is incorporated into all role descriptions, displayed in every classroom and every area of the College and forms the basis of the staff Annual Review Meetings, staff appraisals and all key decision making. ‣ Continued and significant engagement of the College Chaplain in the life of the College. ‣ Celebration of weekly Mass for staff, parents and students and the Sisters of the Nicholson Street Convent. ‣ Acknowledgment of beginning and end of year and other key events eg Year 12 Graduation through the celebration of Eucharist. ‣ Appointment of Director of Faith and Mission. ‣ Participation of staff in an annual spirituality day. ‣ Provision of appropriate avenues for the enhancing of links with other Mercy Schools 2011 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY PAGE 9
ACADEMY OF MARY IMMACULATE, FITZROY ‣ Continued welcome of Mercy Schools to the Academy to gain a greater understanding of the Mercy story and of their Mercy roots. ‣ Representation at all Mercy Conferences and other appropriate Mercy and Religious Education conferences and professional learning activities. ‣ Participation in the Young Mercy Leaders Pilgrimage to Dublin and to World Youth Day – a very significant and enriching experience for all participants. ‣ Annual review of Religious Education Curriculum Years 7 to 12. ‣ Significant increase in staff gaining Accreditation to Teach in a Catholic School ‣ Continued enthusiastic student participation in Seeds of Justice Conferences. ‣ Active involvement of a significant number of students in the Justice Group ‣ Continued support by both staff and students of Atherton Gardens Homework Club (working with and mentoring primary school students from the Public Housing Estate). ‣ Positive student involvement in Community Action Week ‣ Successful Cultural Week held under the auspices of the SRC ‣ Sustained student response to Mercy Day Fundraising with a new record of $7000 raised. VALUE ADDED The Academy of Mary Immaculate adds value to the education of each student through a myriad of activities. Our College documentation and publications – Vision, Mission and Values Statement, Strategic Plan, Prospectus, College Website, fortnightly Newsletter, Academian Magazine, Alumnae Newsletter provide information about aspects of College life that exemplify who we are and the living out of our ethos and mission. At the Academy of Mary Immaculate the above documentation provides a comprehensive summary of all that happens at the Academy.
