Michelle Roberts (Humanities
Department)
The Black Death was one of the most
devastating diseases in human
history. Black Death is estimated to
have killed 30–60 percent of Europe's
population, reducing world
population from an estimated
450 million to between 350 and
375 million in the 14th century. The
aftermath of the plague created a
series of religious, social and
economic upheavals, which had
profound effects on the course of
history. It took 150 years for Europe's
population to recover.
This week, Year 7s have been
studying the origins, causes,
symptoms and medieval attitudes to
this disease. As homework for next
Wednesday, they will imagine they
have been asked to create a TV advert
for one of the Black Death remedies
and cures. They will prepare a short
role play in groups of 2 or 3
demonstrating the power healing
properties of their chosen Black Death
cure. They will present their role plays
next lesson.
Mr. F. Marcos – Head of Humanities
We are very much looking forward to
seeing our year 10 students embark
upon their Work Observation Week,
scheduled for the 18th – 22 nd June
inclusive (the week after they have
completed their end of year exams).
Our work experience component has
been a huge success over the last
couple of years offering students a
very real opportunity to begin to
consider and solidify plans for their
higher studies and eventual working
life. Students have had very positive
experiences in a variety of placements
and employers have been very
impressed with our students.
As far as possible, the placements
have been organised by the students
and their families and they have
been encouraged to choose their
placement based on their interests
and possible future careers.
However, with a growing secondary
school we are keen to secure some
new and exciting placements for our
students.
If you feel you would be able to offer
a work observation placement
through your own business we would
be very grateful. Students would
spend the week observing and
carrying out tasks where possible;
they are not allowed to receive
payment and we hope that their input
At Laude we love telling our students
how well they are doing and that is
why we give them subject awards
every month. Our Modern Foreign
Language star this month was Dalia
Houssrey, a student who really
enjoys learning French and who does
anything she can to use it at all
times. We have interviewed her to
find out more about this “francophile”
and her tips for good language
learning.
• MFL Dpt: When did you start
learning French
• Dalia: A year and a half ago
although it has always been
present in my life. I was born
in French Canada and some
of my family speaks it
fluently.
• MFL Dpt: What is your trick
to learn new vocabulary
• Dalia: I don’t really find it
difficult. Sometimes I read
the list through and then
cover the words to check
that I know them.
• MFL Dpt: Have you had many
chances to use French Do
you find it useful
• Dalia: Yes, in Quebec, French
Canada, everybody speaks it,
not only in France. I’ve used
it there a lot.
• What advice would you give
to people who are thinking of
learning the language
• Dalia: I would say to them
that it is fun, it sounds nice
and it is not as difficult as it
seems, especially if you know
Spanish or are studying it you
will find it much easier as
many words are similar or
nearly the same. You can also
listen to French music or
watch some French films and
this will really help you.
Mr. S.Ortiz – Head of MFL
The Maths Department would
like to ask for donations for our
Bottle Tombola at the May Fair.
If you can spare a bottle of drink,
e.g. Coke, Wine, Spirits, even
Squash, then please either leave it
at Reception or give it to Mr.
MacInnes.
We will happily accept
donations right up to the end of
the school day on Friday. We
really appreciate your support.
The Athletics Championship held in
successful event. It gave hundreds of
children the opportunity to compete
against each other with a spirit of
determination and a high level of
performance.
The successful entrants have had
their work published and the
resulting anthology ‘Express Yourself’
includes poems from across the
globe.
Indeed ‘Express Yourself’ is a
showcase for secondary pupils to
share their creativity and inspiration
and features themes including
touching accounts of friendship and
family to humorous rhymes on the
trials of being young: each poem is a
unique portrait of the thoughts and
feelings of our young writers.
Furthermore, seeing their work in
print is highly motivating and will
definitely encourage students to
keep on writing.
Congratulations to the following
students who produced outstanding
work : Daria Stepanova, Millie
Sprenger, Jade Ma Orefici, Cesar
Gonzalez Prados, Miranda Estradas,
Ryan Boswell and India Rose Sockett.
The Olympic Learner competition,
last Thursday morning in assembly,
when all 35 winners were given the
