This one-hour workshop describes the pharmacological
actions of the club drugs Ecstasy, GHB, and Ketamine. It
explains the effects of these drugs on the central nervous
system, their toxicity, dependence profiles, and how these
drugs change behavior.

This workshop addresses two emerging topics critical to
understanding addictions. The first part of the workshop is
spent examining the underlying neurobiology of acute and
chronic drug effects, such as changes on thinking, impulse
control and judgment. The second half of the workshop
explores the chronic disease model, and long-term
addiction treatment strategies for best outcomes.

Alcohol and other drug treatment providers face many
difficult and complex ethical issues. Issues involving dual
relationships, scope of practice, and professional conduct
frequently arise. These and other ethical issues will be
compared to the ethical standards of other mental health
professional groups within this course.

A major focus of this course is the use of methadone
in the treatment of opiate addiction. Research results
of the success of this form of treatment, as well as the
controversial aspects of methadone maintenance will be
discussed. In addition, other pharmacological approaches
to detoxification, withdrawal, craving reduction, and the
use of these drugs in treatment will be presented.
