This one-hour workshop describes the pharmacological<br />

actions <strong>of</strong> the club drugs Ecstasy, GHB, and Ketamine. It<br />

explains the effects <strong>of</strong> these drugs on the central nervous<br />

system, their toxicity, dependence pr<strong>of</strong>iles, and how these<br />

drugs change behavior.<br />

This workshop addresses two emerging topics critical to<br />

understanding addictions. The first part <strong>of</strong> the workshop is<br />

spent examining the underlying neurobiology <strong>of</strong> acute and<br />

chronic drug effects, such as changes on thinking, impulse<br />

control and judgment. The second half <strong>of</strong> the workshop<br />

explores the chronic disease model, and long-term<br />

addiction treatment strategies for best outcomes.<br />

Alcohol and other drug treatment providers face many<br />

difficult and complex ethical issues. Issues involving dual<br />

relationships, scope <strong>of</strong> practice, and pr<strong>of</strong>essional conduct<br />

frequently arise. These and other ethical issues will be<br />

compared to the ethical standards <strong>of</strong> other mental health<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional groups within this course.<br />

A major focus <strong>of</strong> this course is the use <strong>of</strong> methadone<br />

in the treatment <strong>of</strong> opiate addiction. Research results<br />

<strong>of</strong> the success <strong>of</strong> this form <strong>of</strong> treatment, as well as the<br />

controversial aspects <strong>of</strong> methadone maintenance will be<br />

discussed. In addition, other pharmacological approaches<br />

to detoxification, withdrawal, craving reduction, and the<br />

use <strong>of</strong> these drugs in treatment will be presented.<br />
