Clark said Cummings did not think inclusion of Clark’s recommendations would present any problem and would present them to the board as part of his draft bylaws revision (to be submitted by the end of January). RCF stations now Safe Haven Sites All full-time staffed Riverside County Fire Department stations are designated Safe Haven Sites under California’s Safely Surrendered Baby Law. All hospital emergency rooms also are designated sites. Safe Haven Sites are identifi ed by blue and white signs with the Safe Haven Logo (an outstretched hand holding a baby, within a house-shaped border). Under the law, a parent can legally, confi dentially and safely surrender a baby within three days of birth as long as there has not been abuse. Parents can reclaim babies within 14 days as long as they have the ability to care for the child. Anyone contemplating abandoning an infant may call 1-800-472-5697 anonymously for information about the law and locations of Safe Haven Sites. Weekly vigil at Tree Monument Every Saturday, beginning at 9:30 a.m., a 12-minute Peace and Healing Vigil for the mountain community is being held at the Idyllwild Tree Monument. The vigil includes inspirational peace songs and meditation to contemplate peace and harmony for residents, merchants and visitors and affi rm friendship and prosperity in the community. Forest plans to be reissued Due to technical errors in the document, the U.S. Forest Service (FS) will reissue its decision on land management plans for the four Southern California national forests. Public comments on wildlife issues and FS responses were omitted from the plan. They were, however, considered in the decision-making process, so no change has been made to the document’s fi nal decision. A new 90-day review and appeal period will begin in January. Bee Continued from page 19 Since the spelling bee was over relatively quickly — 45 minutes — Coate only read words from the beginning list that included 417 words. The intermediate list contained 479 words and the advanced list had 352 words. D’Arcy led them through a practice round to help quell any nerves. Some of the words in the practice round included “artistic,” “bombastic,” “declarative,” “egret” and “bilingual.” Most of the students got the words correct, while some misspelled them and sat red-faced. When the spelling bee began, each student stood up, said the word, spelled it and said the word again. If they misspelled the word, Smith immediately said so and gave the correct spelling. They were instructed to wait until the entire round was over before leaving their seats. The spelling bee went along smoothly, with only two interruptions. In the second round, an enthusiastic toddler squealed and ran to his mother which stopped play for a few seconds, and during the ninth round, Rebecca started over when some kids ran by outside and distracted her. She went on to correctly spell “semester.” By the third round, only six contestants were left, including Emma Leach, fourth grade; Alyssa Bondi, sixth grade; Chloe Ezelle, seventh grade; Courtney Higgins, eighth grade; Danielle and Rebecca. From the seventh to the tenth round, only three remained — Alyssa, Danielle and Rebecca. Alyssa, who showed confidence and enunciated well, was eliminated in the tenth round after misspelling “sheriff.” She broke into tears as she ran to her grandmother afterward. In the 11th and 12th rounds, Danielle correctly spelled “thirsty” and “toxic,” while Rebecca correctly spelled “tornado” and “unicorn.” In the 13th round, Rebecca came out ahead when she correctly spelled “adhesive,” while Danielle misspelled “acknowledge.” However, the judges didn’t proclaim Rebecca the winner until she correctly spelled “aerial” (from the intermediate word list) in the 14th round. The 16 participants will likely receive a certificate and be acknowledged at a school assembly, said D’Arcy. If Rebecca or Danielle win at the District Spelling Bee, they will receive an individual trophy and school trophy and go on to the State Spelling Bee. Lake Hemet bald eagle counts The annual bald eagle counts for the San Bernardino National Forest have been scheduled for the Saturdays of Jan. 14 and March 11. Anyone interested in attending should meet at the Lake Hemet Market parking lot at 8 a.m. Volunteers are asked to dress appropriately and bring binoculars. Basketball Town Hall Youth Basketball begins this Friday night with the Celtics taking on the Lakers at 6 p.m. and the Magic hosting the Grizzlies at 7 p.m. Volleyball Mark Loutzenhiser gave this report on Town Hall’s Adult Coed Volleyball. On the Town Sports Sports is sponsored by Vic Sirkin of Idyllwild Realty. Part of the proceeds go to Town Hall Recreation programs. Vic Sirkin After the two-week break, volleyball resumed with Idyllwild Garage picking up a victory over La Casita in four with a score of 25-19, 25-4, 20-25 and 25-22. Art Torrez and setter Karen McLean combined a good game in the front row for the Garage, putting together hard shots for kills. La Casita struggled adjusting to personnel issues but fought hard to stay with the Garage most of the evening. Ryan Gonzalez kept La Casita close, keeping the ball in play with good serves. On Wednesday night, Ajax gave up a game by forfeiting to La Casita. Game of the week was Thursday’s game pitting Mountain Fire Abatement against Escrow Connection. Both teams showed great power at the net and solid defense with blocks from Dennis Fogle and Kyle Holtan of Mountain Fire Abatement. Back row help came when Penny Bottomly put the ball up with nice passing off the serve. Both teams showed their power at the net with kills from Kyle Owens of Escrow Connection who had eight kills for the game with quick sets in the center position. Matt Boss pounded the ball for more scores for Escrow. Mountain Fire Abatement countered at the net with Julie Fogle smashing the ball for a kill and Brian Wilson picking his shots for several kills. In one of the best games of the season this far, Escrow Connection would watch their undefeated season end in four games as Mountain Fire Abatement picked up their third win of the season with scores of 26-24, 25-16, 19-25 and 25-20. Next week’s key matchup will be on Monday when Mountain Fire Abatement takes on the Garage. Golf Idyllwild’s Palms to Pines Golf Association held its second tournament of the season at the Palm Desert Resort on Dec. 16, 2005. Noah Whitney took first place, Tom Kreider took second, and Bill Harris, Herk McClellon and Pete Capparelli tied for third. Closest to the pin were Tom Kreider on the front nine and Bill Harris on the back nine. Tom Kreider also won for longest drive. The season runs from November 2005 to October 2006. Anyone interested in joining the Palms to Pines Golf Association may call George Kretsinger at 659-2264, or Pete Capparelli at 659-2125. The next tournament is Jan. 13 at the PGA of Southern California’s Championship Course in Beaumont. Following are the stats so far this season. Points are awarded to winners.
