The need for volume reduction and waste
minimisation is becoming increasingly
important in the nuclear industry, with a
growing emphasis on innovative solutions
to achieve this. High force compaction
of drummed compactable waste is one
of these solutions and provides major
advantages in reducing the volume of waste
that needs to be sent for final disposal.
Compaction forms an important part of the
Waste Hierarchy for wastes that cannot be
recycled or re-used.
Studsvik have one of the UK’s only mobile
high force compactors, Megan 7, for
compaction of LLW / ILW packed in nominal
200 litre drums. We have successfully
completed campaigns of over 17,000 drums
radioactive waste in Europe.
The Studsvik high force compaction system
is fully enclosed with double air lock
containment. HEPA filters are provided for full
ventilation of the compaction chamber and
airlocks, thereby making the system alpha-tight
and suitable for plutonium contaminated material
(PCM) as well as radiologically contaminated
asbestos. The compactor also has adjustable
force and compaction time for optimising volume
reduction and processing throughput. This is
the first mobile high force compactor of its kind
available in the UK market place.
Wastes suitable for compaction include:
• Metallic scrap
• Plastic, asbestos and insulation material
• Glass, filters
• Paper, wood
• Electrical parts, cables
• Ashes from incineration
A volume reduction factor of up to ten is
achievable with the Megan 7, depending upon
the type of waste being processed. The key
advantage of using the Megan 7 is the volume
reduction and cost savings for transportation
and final disposal / storage of drummable
LLW/ILW.

For large campaigns the compactor can
easily be mobilised to the customer site for
on-site compaction. We have a dedicated
site team ready for mobilisation throughout
the UK. Our services include:
• Preparation of safety case documents for
installation of the system
• Site mobilisation
• Waste sorting and characterisation
• Waste tracking
• Compaction using waste-specific
programmes
• Packing of pucks into ISO containers or
other waste packages
• Compilation of documentation of waste
content, treatment and waste package
data
Our high force compaction service can be
fully integrated with other Studsvik products
including turnkey decommissioning, health
physics, waste characterisation and drum
assay, waste clearance and exemption,
decontamination, waste treatment and a
full logistics and packaging service.
All Studsvik services are managed in
accordance with accredited management
systems to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS
18001.
