The Past And
The Present
Above: The 100 year old coop feed mill in Lakefield
Scott Wootton wanted his own children to experience the
lifestyle he had as a child, spending idyllic summers at an
island cottage on Stoney Lake, taking sailing lessons at
Juniper Island.
After several years of searching, he and his wife did find a lot
on the same lake, just up from the locks at Burleigh Falls. But,
how to build a cottage that would capture that nostalgic feeling
from long ago
When Wootton heard that the 100 year old coop feed mill
in Lakefield was going to be demolished, he knew he wanted
some of that wood.
“The mill’s timberframe structure had three sections, one of
which I salvaged,” says Wootton, the president of Kawartha
Lake Construction. “I hired Kingdon Lumber to crane the
wood, which I stored at my farm for a couple of years until I
was ready to build the cottage.”
Wootton designed the two-storey cottage around the timber,
constructing a conventional stick building with 2’ x 6’
walls on an Insulated Concrete Foam (ICF) foundation. His
showpiece all-season home has the beauty of an old wooden
building, but with all latest environmental efficiencies.
“There is a high level of air tightness in the cottage, which I
An
Immeasurable
Level of
Satisfaction
By Joanne Culley
“The interior wood trims, the doorframes, window trim
and sills, etc., throughout the house were also Integrity
Construction’s recommendations which we’re very happy with.”
Laura Windsor
Constructed over seven months by Integrity Construction,
the approximately 2,000 foot home fits in beautifully
with the northern landscape. “Originally Integrity
was just going to build the shell of the house, but we were so
impressed with the way they worked and how their team
functioned that we had them do the interior also, consulting
with us on all aspects along the way,” says Laura.
The one-and-a-half storey house is made of Ontario pine
square logs, surrounded by a deck constructed of Western red
cedar, from wood that has been “eco-farmed.”
The light-filled interior boasts square-paned windows and a
high cathedral ceiling topped with an arched window.
“We wanted an open concept home, especially in the kitchen,
where we spend a lot of time,” explains Laura. “We do a lot of
entertaining, and I want to be able to see people as they come in
the door, as well as to talk to them in the living area, while I’m
cooking.”
Using a Colonial Concepts home as a base, the couple made
design modifications to suit the lot as well as their own choices.
Personal touches include a wide, ceramic-tiled foyer in
which to greet guests, yellow birch hardwood floors, and a powder
room off the foyer, so that, as Laura says, they can “come in
from the garden and wash our hands without taking off our
boots.“Laura says the team at Integrity were professionals
throughout the whole process, with two important areas where
their advice and input was critical to the finished product.
“We had established the perimeter dimensions for the front
deck and knew we wanted a change in level across the front. We
had picked out the railing baluster style and the finished product
very much reflected Integrity’s design recommendations,”
continues Laura. “The interior wood trims, the doorframes,
window trim and sills, etc., throughout the house were also
Integrity recommendations which we’re very happy with.”
The exposed wood of the living and dining area keeps the
aesthetic beauty of the wood, without sacrificing the insulating
values of the home. Exterior frame walls on the upper level of
the house are finished in drywall with a high R-factor blown-in
insulation.
Laura says the benefits of building a new house are many.
“Living in a house you have helped to design, getting exactly
what you want, with the quality of craftsmanship that Integrity
has, where everything is well made and all the finishing touches
are taken care of - the level of satisfaction is immeasurable,” she says.
Before building a new house, Laura says the most important
decision to make is who to choose as the builder.
She advises looking at their experience and choosing a company
that will do what they say they will do, and build up a
relationship of trust.
“The whole process of building a
new home can be overwhelming.
Choosing Integrity helped us avoid the
pitfalls that beset many homeowners,”
she says. Design/Build Company Based
in Lindsay, Integrity Construction Services
Inc. has been in business for four
years, with registered, certified in-house
designers, carpenters and construction
managers. Their team is experienced in
conventional frame construction, with
significant expertise in specialty areas
such as log, timber frame, structural insulated
panels (SIP), insulated concrete
form (ICF) and newly emerging hybrid
construction methodologies.
Integrity Construction Services designs
and builds custom executive
homes and cottages, throughout central
Ontario ranging from Haliburton and
Muskoka, south to Lake Ontario and
North Kawarthas, and as far west as
Hockley Valley.
“We are a Design-Build firm specializing
in whole home solutions,” says
Robert Barrow, one of the firm’s Principals
and Construction Manager. “We
build highquality timber frame and log
homes made of pine or fir, which last
longer, cost less to operate and maintain,
and provide greater homeowner
satisfaction than anything else on the
market”.
Energy Efficiency
Integrity’s executive retreats, usually
built in and around lakes, are typically
constructed using a ‘green’ approach,
which places a high priority on health,
environmental and resource conservation
performance over its life-cycle.
“We are committed to energy-efficient
construction and being stewards of the
environment. We like to use newly emerging
technologies whenever we can,”
continues Barrow. “We want our homes
to use as little energy as possible. We
encourage our clients to consider things
such as in-floor radiant heating and/or
geo-thermal applications. We like to
tell folks that even though these systems
might cost more initially, after
about six or seven years or less, they are
looking at substantial savings in energy
costs.”
Close teamwork throughout the design
process, openness to new approaches,
and practical advice as to how these
are best applied are often more important
in terms of initial budget vs. life
cycle costing, according to Barrow.
North American-Wide Experience
Company founder Rob Barrow graduated
from Ryerson University in 1993 with a degree
from the Department of Architectural
Science, majoring in Project Management.
Since then he has worked in a variety
of key construction management positions
on many different projects in the
United States and Canada.
Integrity Construction Services
builds all year round. They custom tailor
every one of their homes to the
uniqueness of each client’s property,
tastes, needs and budget.
The process of having a new home
built begins with a free consultation,
followed by Phase 1 of preconstruction,
where preliminary designs and budgets
are prepared, taking into account the
client’s wish list.
Phase 2 involves preparing the permit
drawings, firming up bids, selecting
finishes, and making the decisions necessary
in order to move forward to the
construction phase. Phase 3 is the actual
construction, which usually takes
between 8 and 14 months depending
on the complexity of the design and
challenges or remoteness of the site.
When asked why their group chose
the name Integrity, Barrow says, “Integrity
is our core value, which is what we
aspire to in every way, ensuring quality,
ethics, health and safety in all that we do.
Our innovative approach and collaborative
team effort continually result in
project successes and customer satisfaction.”
Idyllic Retreat
Not Just A Dream
1867 Confederation Log & Timber Frame
Making Dreams A Reality for Over
30 Years In The Kawarthas
An idyllic retreat nestled among the trees of the
Kawartha Lakes is a dream for many homeowners.
People building in the Kawarthas are looking for a
simpler lifestyle in a comfortable, casual setting, which
renews them from their life in the city,” says Rick Kinsman
of 1867 Confederation Log & Timber Frame.
“They want to feel like they and their home are a part
of nature. They are respectful of their surroundings
and usually want to minimize the disturbance, and become
a part of the setting.”
Building a traditional log home always fulfilled the
natural look requirements for many clients of 1867
Confederation Log & Timber Frame. As a custom log
home manufacturer for over 30 years, 1867 has seen an
increased request by clients to incorporate large timbers
into designs either combined with traditional log
construction or as the main structure. As a result 1867
Confederation Log and Timber Frame Homes has
changed both their name and product to reflect consumer
demand by introducing timber framing to its
standard inventory.
“Many people are familiar with the reputation and
log buildings of 1867 Confederation Log Homes. Over
the past couple of years we have done so many timber
frame buildings we felt that it was important that our
name reflect the increased product line.” says owner
Rick Kinsman.
As anyone who has ever owned a timber frame residence
will tell you, these unique accents and innovative
designs create not only a home, but an experience.
From the exterior, deep overhangs, multi-gabled rooflines
and massive columns create a vision of permanence
and strength. Inside the beauty of the wood is displayed
in ceiling beams that vary from simple straight
lines to complex curves, beveled edges and carved pendants.
“We love it,” say the Botterbergs, owner of an 1867
Confederation Log & Timber Frame home on Pigeon
Lake. “We saw the model home in Bobcaygeon and fell
in love with the open concept main living area. The
cathedral ceiling with large windows and loft appealed
to us. It just had a cosy feel. “
For these happy homeowners the sunroom
with timber frame accents combined
with large windows and doors
opening to a deck allows them to enjoy
the natural setting whether indoors or
out.
“All of our buildings are totally custom
built”, says Kinsman. “Whether you
choose log or timber frame or a combination
of the two we work with every client
to create a design that is unique to their
particular wants and needs. Timber
frame options include king, collar tie,
hammer beam and scissor truss designs
which can be employed for a single room
or throughout the home”
1867 Confederation Log and Timber
Frame has eliminated the extensive labour
formerly required to create traditional
joints by utilizing a unique fastening
method. It is completely invisible,
thus maintaining the timeless heritage
look of post and beam construction. It is
certified for tension and shear and five
times as strong as a normal mortise and
tenon joint. Savings in extensive labour
costs permit the look of timeless craftsmanship
at an exceptional price.
A log or timber frame home from 1867
Confederation Log and Timber Frame
also meets the requirements of modern
homeowners concerns about the environment.
Logs are a natural product: recyclable,
biodegradable, and renewable. At
1867 locally grown, sustainable forested
wood is used; lumber is air dried, using
less energy in the manufacturing process
than kiln dried. The thick log exterior
walls mediate temperature differentials
and improve energy efficiency. 1867 Confederation
Log and Timber Frame
achieved a significant “green” milestone
as manufacturer of the first log home in
Canada to achieve an Energy Star rating.
Timber accents provide a unique opportunity
to create a custom look for
both new construction and renovations.
For your new home or cottage, or simply
to update your existing home with a timber
frame entry or sunroom, contact 1867
Confederation Log and Timber Frame to
discuss available options. 1-877-GO-2-
Canoe & Kayak Tripping
In The
Kawarthas
By Joanne Culley
Travelling on the waterways takes one
back hundreds of years to the time of the
First Nations people and voyageurs.
In Anishnabe, Kawartha means “bright waters and happy
lands”. Many love exploring its clear, deep lakes and sparkling
rivers by canoe or kayak. The area abounds with opportunities
for those wanting to get away from it all on a day trip
or longer excursion.
Paddling is a good way to stay active while at the same time
slowing down to experience the restorative powers of nature. As
technology tends to take over more and more of our lives, it’s
important to remember that it wasn’t always this way.
Travelling on the waterways takes one back hundreds of years
to the time of the First Nations people and voyageurs. We can
still experience some of the same wild beauty they saw in the
forests and rocks of the Canadian Shield.
Day Trips
There are many options for day trips on the lakes and rivers in the
Peterborough area. Putting in at Little Lake in Peterborough’s
East City, canoeists or kayakers can have a leisurely paddle
through the lagoons of Beavermead Park, or head upstream or
downstream on the Otonabee River. The Otonabee can also be
accessed at Squirrel Creek Conservation Area, south of the city,
on Wallace Point Road, where one can travel downstream past
cottages and forests to Rice Lake.
Many enjoy paddling along the Indian River. A popular putin
spot is the beach at the Lions Park in the town of Warsaw from
which one can travel towards the Warsaw Caves Conservation
Area. Further south along the river, paddlers can put in at Keene,
where they can explore the marshes as they go downstream into
Rice Lake. Travelling along the lake’s shore, one can also explore
Serpent Mounds Park, the site of a 2000 year-old native settlement,
with nine burial grounds on a drumlin, a high point of
land overlooking the lake.
Eels Creek, north of Stoney Lake, offers travellers a scenic trip
through the rocks and forests of the Canadian Shield. Paddlers
can put in at Highway 28 and paddle down to the take-out just
before Stoney Lake. Be prepared to portage along several trails to
avoid the rapids. There is the option of
taking a hike into Petroglyphs Provincial
Park, where one can observe the sacred
“teaching rocks” that were carved between
600 and 1100 years ago on crystallized
marble, and are the largest known
area of its kind in North America.
Longer Trips
The Kawartha Highlands Signature Site
Park offers many routes to explore by canoe
or kayak, with several access points.
Long Lake in the east is the starting place
for several trips where one can travel in a
loop, for instance through Loucks, Cox
and Stoplog Lakes, or one way, south
through Buzzard and Vixen Lakes, to end
at Coon Lake. Further north, Crab and
Wolf Lakes can be accessed through
Anstruther Lake Rd. off of Highway 28,
and offer options for day or weekend trips.
At the west side of the park, one can
have a pleasant day’s paddle starting out
at Beaver Lake and going through Bottle
Creek into Sucker Lake.
North of Apsley, Silent Lake Provincial
Park provides an opportunity to paddle
through three interconnecting lakes
with rocky islands where one can indeed
experience silence as no motorboats are
allowed in the park.
Environmental Awareness
While canoeing or kayaking in any wilderness
area it is important to pack garbage
out, and, where possible, pick up whatever
has been left behind by others. There is
nothing more annoying than coming
upon a spot in the wilderness that has
been trashed with beer cans, food scraps
and other garbage. The sharp contrast of a
beautiful forest next to a junked picnic
stop or campsite stresses an important
point about preserving the environment.
Close Encounters with Wildlife
The slower pace and silence of paddling
puts one on the same wavelength as
wildlife. There’s nothing like witnessing
the surprise of a loon as she pops up a few
metres away from the canoe, and then
quickly dives under when she realizes she
isn’t alone.
Canoeing and kayaking can bring
some exceptional experiences, such as seeing
ancient pictographs on a granite rock,
hearing wolves call to each other in the
night, seeing a moose and her calf grazing
in a marsh, picking blueberries beside a
portage, or watching a shooting star while
sitting by the campfire.
Wherever you decide to go in the
Kawarthas, you’re sure to have your own
unique experience with nature.
Unique Homes &
Cottages With A
Personal Touch
In business since 1989, Jim Williams Construction builds
custom homes and does renovations for Peterborough
& the Surrounding area, as far away as
Haliburton and Tweed.
The haunting cry of a loon over a misty lake. Waves
lapping at the shoreline stirred by a gentle summer
breeze. A gruff “croak” coming from a shallow patch
of undisturbed water. These are just a sampling of the many
sounds that represent the Kawarthas.
In business since 1989, Jim Williams Construction builds
custom homes and does renovations for Peterborough and the
surrounding area, as far away as Haliburton and Tweed.
Currently he and his crew are putting the finishing touches
on a 3200 sq. ft cottage built with Douglas fir timber reclaimed
from a torn-down building on the Trenton Air Force base.
“The timber is excellent, even though it’s 80 years old, it’s
straight and strong and makes good beams,” says Williams.
“We’re using beautiful granite rock on the outside.” The house
is being built using normal 2’ x 6’ framing.
Located on lower Buckhorn Lake, the home has many special
features: wood-filled soffits, radiant heat in the bathroom
and a large screened-in wrap-around three season sun porch
from which to take in the views of the lake.
After tearing down the original cottage, Williams and his
crew have spent seven months working on it.
Every home he builds is different, says Williams. “It’s not
like working in a subdivision, where there are cookie cutter
houses. These are unique, one-of-a-kind houses with a personal
touch,” he says. Recent homes he has built include bungalows
in Peterborough and on Chemong Lake.
The process of building a home is fairly straight-forward,
according to Williams, and depending on the size and complexity
of the design, can take anywhere from three or four
months to a year.
“We meet with the client in their home, to get an idea of
what they’re used to,” he continues. “Often they will have a
picture of what they’re thinking of. From that, the architect
will draw up plans for approval by the client.”
Once the building begins, the client comes to walk through
the framing to get an idea of the space. That’s a good time to
move any of the walls.
“It’s hard to imagine the room size and where the walls are
on paper, but once you walk through you have a better idea,”
he says. Clients pick the windows, countertops, trims, flooring
and woodwork to individualize their home.
“We don’t just finish a home with drywall,” he says. A licensed
carpenter, Williams specializes in the putting on the
finishing touches, which he says is what makes a home unique.
“Once the house is complete, I derive great satisfaction
from seeing the homeowners get what they want,” he says.
“It’s good to spend the time and build a house that they are
comfortable living in.”
Williams advises those planning to have a new home built
to check the credentials of builders to ensure high quality of
product and service. Williams is a member of the Peterborough
and District Home Builders Association, the Tarion
New Home Warranty program, and the RenoMark program
for his renovation projects.
Kitchens
A Star Is Born
Kitchen Supplier For “Marriage Under
Construction” Stresses The Importance Of
Renovation Planning And Budgeting
Afew years ago we had the privilege of being chosen as
the kitchen supplier for an HGTV series called
“Marriage Under Construction”. The show was
centered around a very young and very naive couple who,
after buying their first house, were faced with the daunting
task of renovating, luckily, a new kitchen was high on their
wish list!
Working with the young couple and their contractor, we
came up with a terrific design that provided them with a very
functional kitchen and also provided them with the look they
were after. We felt that we had achieved the goal of creating a
beautiful kitchen for an excellent price. As with every client,
we start out by asking a budget for the kitchen, but as a young
couple starting out, they had no idea how much a new kitchen
would cost. In the end, the kitchen was great, and the client
was thrilled, but the kitchen was only one of many rooms that
needed renovating, and they were left with a much more
modest budget than they started with.
As the show evolved, it became clear that the lack of
budget for the rest of the home was due in large part to the
money that was used on the kitchen. Thankfully, along the
way, the couple received additional funds from family and
were able to complete the renovations that were needed.
The show was a great experience for us, and we feel that the
outcome was a positive one. Not only did the client end up
with a beautiful kitchen for a great price, but their budget
woes were an important lesson for any viewer who is getting
started on a renovation project.
If you are considering any renovation, set a budget. Then
call a renovation company or home improvement supplier and
have a preliminary discussion about your budget. Don’t be
shy, the subject will need to be discussed at some point and
it will save you and the company you choose to do the
renovation a lot of time if you establish a realistic budget at
the start. When we go through the process with our clients,
we try to cover all the various items that will need to be
included in the budget in order to arrive at a reliable final
budget. It often grows in size as you take into account all the
things, big or small, that will be needed. No one wants to see
the total cost continue to inch up but it is much better to be
fully prepared before you start so you can have the money to
pay for the project and not fall short.
Finally, hire a reliable and qualified contractor. Check
their references and, if possible, speak to former clients to get
their feed back on their project. With a little leg work on
your part, you will get what you want for the price you are
expecting to pay and be thrilled with the outcome.
Good Luck.
Fireplaces
A Fire Is
Kindled
Written by
Michele Kadwell-Chalmers
There’s nothing quite like coming up to the cottage and
gathering around a wood fire with family and friends.
This is the time to enjoy good food, warmth, and conversation
around the fire. Wood burning is so much more than
heat; it creates a feeling of relaxation, togetherness and speaks to
your soul.
In heating our homes and cottages with wood, we are simply
tapping into the natural carbon cycle in which CO2 flows from
the atmosphere to the forest and back. Trees absorb carbon dioxide
from the air as they grow, with about half their dry weight
being carbon the tree has absorbed. As old trees die and decay,
or are consumed in a forest fire, their carbon is again released
into the air as carbon dioxide. This is why wood is considered
a carbon neutral fuel. No further carbon dioxide is released by
burning the wood than leaving it to naturally decay in the forest.
The use of wood as a heating fuel does not contribute to
global warming and climate change the way fossil fuels do.
When other fossil fuels, such as oil, gas, and coal are burned,
old carbon that has been stored in the earth is released into the
atmosphere. This increased compressed form of carbon dioxide
is linked to global warming and the unusual weather we’ve seen
in recent years.
The main issue with wood burning is the smoke created when
wood is not burned properly. This creates concern for air pollution
and exacerbates breathing disorders. These are valid concerns.
The answer to this problem is using high efficiency wood
stoves, inserts or factory made fireplaces, along with education
on their use.
Each person who heats with wood must take responsibility
for their impact on the environment and the effect on their
neighbours. A chimney spewing smoke cannot be justified, but
by updating to an EPA advanced technology stove, smoke emissions
can be reduced by up to 90%. These new appliances also
burn up to one third less wood, saving not only trees, but money
as well. Consider wood smoke as wasted energy.
Replacing your old conventional stove, insert, or fireplace
with a high efficiency appliance is an important part of the solution.
Seasoned firewood and an understanding of how the new
stoves work are also important factors in maintaining air quality.
According to a report from U.S. EPA, Strategies for Reducing
Residential Wood Smoke dated October 29, 2009, “Engaging
the public and giving them the tools to make the right decisions
about what they burn and how they burn is the first step in an
overall wood smoke plan. With proper burning techniques and
well-seasoned wood, emissions (even in older stoves) can be
significantly reduced.”
A homeowner’s skill at wood heating and their regard for
their neighbours can be seen at the top of their chimney, where
there should be no visible smoke, except for a few minutes when
a fire is kindled, which makes everyone who heats with wood
instantly and visibly accountable.
Peterborough Green Up
Peterborough Green Up
The Kawartha’s
Ribbon
of Life
By Matt Higgs
Shoreline Advisors Rob Davis and Catharine Hoare (right)
chat with a cottager on Soyers Lake.
Just as the families who visit our lakes
have changed over time, the lakes and the
way we use them have changed as well.
The haunting cry of a loon over a misty lake.
Waves lapping at the shoreline stirred by a
gentle summer breeze. A gruff “croak” coming
from a shallow patch of undisturbed water. These are
just a sampling of the many sounds that represent the
Kawarthas.
We are extremely fortunate to call this area home,
and can clearly see (and hear) why our little piece of
Ontario has proven itself as one of the most popular
destinations in the province for cottagers.
Our clean waters and abundant wildlife is a draw
for all walks of life, making the family cottage a
treasured keepsake passed between generations—a
home away from home. It’s a place to not only relax
and unwind but also serves as the foundation which
keeps families together.
Just as the families who visit our lakes have changed
over time, the lakes and the way we use them have
changed as well. In many cases natural shorelines and
native plants have been replaced with armour stone
walls and lawns that go right to the water’s edge. These
landscape features promote erosion and provide
fertilizers and herbicides with a direct path into
the lake.
One of the most important things shoreline
property owners can do is keep a buffer zone as small
as three meters wide of natural vegetation between the
lake and any areas of lawn. This reduces the amount of
any potential pollutant and sediment going directly
into the lake.
When conducting any work around water you need
to check with your local Conservation Authority, the
Ministry of Natural Resources or the Trent-Severn
Waterway. Where your property is located here in
‘lakeland’ determines which permitting agency you
need to contact.
A natural vegetation buffer has other benefits then
just preventing excessive runoff and the erosion—it
also can deter geese which can be a cottage owner’s
worst nightmare. Geese love to congregate in large
numbers, munching on the lawn and depositing their
own natural fertilizer, something that is not pleasant
to step in when on a stroll to the water’s edge.
The trick to keeping the geese in the water is in
reducing large open spaces close to the water’s edge,
like lawns. Geese just love to hangout on a lawn is
because food is readily available and the wide-open
space allows them to keep an eye out for predators. A
natural buffer zone between the lawn and the lake
reduces this open space, causing the geese to not feel
nearly as brave.
If you have specific questions about your shoreline
or want to know the best actions to take to remedy
problems you might be facing, you may be the
ideal candidate for a shoreline visit from the Lakeland
Alliance.
Through a one-on-one site visit, a Shoreline Advisor
will provide hands-on guidance and expertise to
cottagers who are looking to reduce their impact on
the lake. The service is free, non-regulatory and strictly
confidential operating on Boshkung, Kushug,
and Limerick Lakes as well as the Catchacoma and
Mississauga chain of lakes.
Any recommendations provided by the Advisor are
voluntary suggestions for you alone to decide upon
whether or not to take action on. The advisor can also
give you tips about best practices for your septic
system, pollution prevention, invasive species and
answer questions you may have about which native
plants to use when naturalizing your shoreline.
If you are interested in receiving a free consultation
but are not located on these lakes or want to find more
about the Shoreline Advisor program, give Mike Gibbs
of the Lakeland Alliance a call at 705-745-3238 ext
207 or email lakelandalliance@coegeo.net.
By doing your own small part, be it reducing
erosion or creating a naturalized shoreline you’re
contributing to the overall health of the lake and
ensuring it remains a place of relaxation, family,
and wildlife habitat for years to come.
but for our spirits as well.”
Wild Rock has everything needed to help you get outside
and enjoy the warm weather, from traditional sports
to the latest trends in sporting activity.
“The latest rage is ‘stand-up paddling.’ People can use
these longer paddles to give their old windsurfers new
life,” he continues. “The sport originated in Hawaii, and
we sell the paddles required – it’s a great way to develop
core strength and balance.”
Wild Rock sells and rents canoes, kayaks and associated
gear for recreational paddling, white water fun and
tripping. Mad River, Bluewater, Scott and Esquif are just
some of the canoes they carry. In addition to canoes, they
sell Wilderness Systems and Necky kayaks. All can be
transported on their Yakima sports racks.
“We have sit-on-top and open cockpit kayaks that are
perfect for kids or adults to play around with on the
beach,” he says. “The Pungo model from Wilderness Systems
has a nice back rest and thigh system that makes it
easy to climb in and out of.”
Scott says that Wild Rock has the largest, most comprehensive
selection of camping equipment in the Kawarthas.
Every piece of equipment you can think of is available
there - from tents, backpacks, water bottles,
compasses, stoves and food, right down to the smaller
items such as matches, sunscreen and tent pegs. There is a
selection of three and four-season tents, in a variety of
sizes and shapes, such as dome or tunnel.
They have a wide range of comfortable quality
sportswear and accessories ideal for hiking, camping or
travelling. North Face, Patagonia, Lolë, Royal Robbins,
Columbia, and Icebreaker are just some of the brands
they stock. With over 150 footwear products, customers
can find everything from flip-flops and sandals to
walking shoes and hiking boots.
Their guides, maps and books, including Kevin Callan’s
popular canoeing books, can help you decide where to
go.
“Just released is the latest edition of the Peterborough
and area cycling map that shows the many different
roads, trails and routes to explore,” he says. “It’s available
here at the store, as well as in various tourist outlets
around the region.”
Wild Rock’s bicycle department can outfit you for
anything from a recreational bike ride to racing in a
triathlon, with bikes from Trek, Cannondale, Look and
Cervelo. Their new bicycle fitting service can help cyclists
custom fit their bike to their individual requirements, by
adjusting handlebar height, seat position, pedal distance,
Building
Renovations
Located in the heart of the Kawarthas, Kidd Bros. Construction
Ltd. carries on the tradition of quality craftsmanship
handed down through the generations. Owner
Harold Kidd and his brothers learned carpentry from their father
and grandfather.
Harold Kidd has worked extensively on cottages and homes
in the region, in particular on Clear, Stoney and Buckhorn
Lakes.
Kidd Bros. is a design/build company that does complete cottage
renovations and additions, constructs decks, docks, walkouts,
as well as custom kitchens, bathrooms, rec rooms, windows
and doors. Outside, they build garages, decks, patios, fences, and
gazebos. Other services include landscaping, consulting and
mold removal. With their affiliated company KB Insulation,
they specialize in spray foam and all aspects of insulation for
residential and commercial applications.
“We’ve been installing insulation for 23 years and saw the
need to expand into the spray foam business in Peterborough and
to apply the same quality and integrity to the insulation market
that we do in our building business,” continues Harold. “We are
concerned about the ‘building envelope’, making sure that our
customers save on energy costs while receiving the best comfort
level in their homes.”
They work across a broad geographical area, extending from
Barrie and Orillia in the west, around to Lindsay, north to Algonquin,
Ottawa, south to the lakeshore, east to Campbellford
and all points in between, basically, as Harold says, “wherever
our clients take us.”
“Our mission at Kidd Bros. is to provide the customer with
the best custom construction services along with a finished product
that is second to none,” says Harold. “We continue to strive
for excellence in quality of workmanship and customer satisfaction.”
Projects they have worked on include the Tru-Pac Products
building and Dan Whatman Accounting, both in Bridgenorth,
and large residential renovations in the Norwood area. One of
their current projects is enlarging a 1,000 square foot home to
3,500 square feet.
“No job is too small or too big, it just has to be done right,”
continues Harold. The company does most of their own work,
limiting the use of subcontractors, so that they can control the
quality of the job. They construct the footings, foundations, siding,
framework, roofing and more.
“We’re certified Logix installers, which is a Styrofoam block
foundation system that helps us control our job schedule more
efficiently,” says Harold.
Customer Service
At Kidd Bros., they work closely with their customers to make
sure they have the best comfort level during their project.
“We attend to every detail and before we leave any job, we
make sure the customer is satisfied,” says Harold. “We stay in
touch with our customers, who, after we finish one job, regularly
book us for the next job.”
Harold says his business has grown by word-of-mouth, with a
large repeat clientele.
“We work year-round, handling upwards of 300 jobs a year
with our nine full-time and two part-time employees, and the
jobs come in largely from referrals. We’ve built the business
through courtesy, by leaving a clean job site, especially taking
care with interior work sites to make sure there is no dust or debris
– it’s basically just common sense.”
This award-winning company won the Best Renovation
Award from the Peterborough and Kawarthas Homebuilders Association,
of which they are a member. Other industry credentials
include being a RenoMark contractor, and a member of the
Renovation Council of Ontario, the Peterborough District Construction
Exchange, and the Canadian Urethane Foam Contractors
Association.
Summer Theatre
The history of radium and uranium refining in Port Hope is a rich story that
points to both the healing power of science and the destructive capability of
its discoveries. As seen in the first play of the season at 4th Line Theatre.
For 18 years 4th Line Theatre, Canada’s premiere outdoor
theatre company, has brought history to life on
the barnyard stages of the picturesque 5th generation
Winslow Farm in Millbrook, Ontario. The theatre company
is committed to preserving and promoting our Canadian cultural
heritage through the development and presentation of
regionally based, environmentally staged historical drama.
The 2010 season begins with Eldorado Town - The Port
Hope Play by Charles Hayter which examines how a small
Ontario town played a significant role in ending WW II and
in the coming of the nuclear age. The play, set between 1930 and
1946, tells the story of radium and uranium refining from the
viewpoint of Eldorado Gold Mines Limited’s owners, workers,
town residents and the idealistic French chemist, Marcel
Pochon, a protégé of Marie Curie, who oversaw the refining and
promoted the healing powers of radium.
The history of radium and uranium refining in Port Hope
is a rich story that points to both the healing power of science
and the destructive capability of its discoveries. The story of
Eldorado and Port Hope illustrates these themes on a local
level and the play will give people some historical context for
the complex controversies of today.
The second production of the 2010 season is the return of
last season’s wildly successful The Right Road to Pontypool
by Alex Poch-Goldin which became a sold-out audience favourite
and had the critics calling it “remarkable,” “magnificent”
and saying it “should not be missed.” The Right Road
to Pontypool is the little known true story of how a small village
in Ontario became Toronto’s own little Catskills resort
between 1916 and the early 1960s.
In the era when the signs at Toronto’s Sunnyside Beach
said “No Dogs or Jews Allowed” and when Jews in Europe
were facing unimaginable peril, the village of Pontypool Ontario
became a summer retreat for thousands of Jewish immigrants.
This is the poignant and humorous story of a cherished
memory of a world that once was.
4th Line Theatre provides audiences unforgettable outdoor,
epic theatrical experiences that are enjoyed by thousands
of visitors every year. Theatre-goers, young and old
alike, will fall in love with the farm experience, complete with
picnics, birdsong and sunsets in the country.
Eldorado Town - The Port Hope Play runs Tuesdays to Saturdays
from June 29 – July 24. The Right Road to Pontypool runs Tuesdays
to Saturdays from August 2 – August 28. www.4thlinetheatre.on.ca
Water Sports
Wakeboarding
Get More Pop by Simply Doing Less
As you begin to understand the physics of wakeboarding,
you’ll realize how much more pop you can get off the
wake simply by doing less. Working too hard to get air is
such a common mistake. All you really have to do is stand tall,
which you’re already doing when you cut away from the wake to
set up for a wake jump. It’s all about energy transfer. Use jumping
on a trampoline as an example. When you come down on a
trampoline, all you have to do to bounce right back into the air
is keep your legs straight and your upper body in line with your
legs. If you crouch down and try to push off the trampoline, your
legs will absorb rather than transfer the energy and you won’t
spring as high. The same rules apply to getting pop off the wake.
Making these simple changes will help you work less and achieve
more.
It all starts with the edge. Start very close to the wake to show
them getting air isn’t about speed, it’s about edging. When you’re
on edge, your wakeboard actually creates energy because the water
wants to push the board back up to the surface. As you cut
harder, that energy increases, but you need to harness it correctly.
For instance, you can take an easy cut and do nothing more than
stand tall at the wake, and you’ll get more pop than if you took a
hard cut, crouched down and tried to push off the wake but mistimed
the pop. Once you understand what the right kind of pop
feels like, start going wider and wider until you find the right
combination. Just remember to always edge harder as you get
closer to the wake and to hold that edge all the way through.
Line it up. To effectively use the energy created by edging,
you need to resist with your entire body, which means keeping
your upper body in line with your lower body. Your hips should
be close to the handle with your arms straight. Edge all the way
up the wake, and make sure your chest is facing the sky. If your
hips move away from the handle, your chest will automatically
cave in and you’ll lose some of the pressure — and energy — from
the board. Put simply: Stand tall and lean away with your arms straight.
Use both hands. It’s common to let go of the handle too early
when you’re going for a trick with a grab or a handle pass. But
when you’re coming into the wake, all of the force from the board
needs to be transferred through your hands into the rope. If you
change the dynamic before you finish the pop, you’ll have lost
some of your energy. So make sure you always keep both hands
on the rope until your board leaves the wake.
Less is definitely more when it comes to efficient energy transfer,
so just hang on, make sure you have a progressive edge and
stand tall at the wake. You’ll get all the pop you’ll ever need.
Outdoor Entertaining
Outdoor Entertaining
Entertaining and Relaxing…
Outside
take it
On this note, Mike Van de Bor added, “There are many flooring
options for outdoor rooms. The preferred choice for a foundation
though is concrete. In particular, patterned concrete has the benefit
of being pleasing to the eye, very durable, and extremely solid.
People are often surprised at the range of looks that patterned concrete
can provide, we can even mimic the look of wood!”
Outdoor rooms can be designed to mimic indoor kitchens,
with expansive counter space and full food preparation areas
complete with sinks and plumbing. It’s even possible to add a
dishwasher and a refrigerator to make trips inside to clean up or
grab a cold drink a distant memory. Outdoor rooms are limited
only by the customer’s imagination. Take the concept further with
the addition of pizza ovens, cocktail bars, fountains, trellises,
patio heaters, spas and pools.
Sitting comfortably with friends or family in the
backyard on a cool summer evening, with a warm
fire and dinner sizzling on the grill is pure pleasure.
For the price of a single family vacation you can
transform your backyard into an outdoor oasis that will
provide years of enjoyment. Given the costs and
uncertainties involved in an extensive vacation, more and
more Ontario residents are choosing to stay at home and
instead turn their backyard into their own vacation spot
that can be used more often than just July and August. As
interest in the outdoor room continues to grow, a number
of Kawartha-based companies have developed products
and services to enhance the comfort, convenience and
pleasure of entertaining or relaxing outside, no matter
the climate or season.
How To Create An Outdoor Room
When asked how a customer begins to create an outdoor
room, Jason Lichter from Friendly Fires described the
process… “Customers are often relieved to find how easy it
can be to create an outdoor room. Their worry is often that
they have to play the role of a general contractor which involves
more product knowledge and time than most homeowners
have. In general, a customer will have a vision, and
then come into one of our showrooms. We can walk a customer
through all the BBQ details like grill size, options
and accessories as well as outdoor heaters and even fire pits.
Once these elements are decided, a customer will then look
at other components such as gazebos, furniture and of
course, flooring. For flooring, we partner with top local
companies such as Van de Bor Paving.”
Outdoor Room Checklist
Hearth: Wood or gas fireplace, firepit, outdoor torches
Cooking: Barbecue, wood-fired pizza oven, refrigerator, keg dispenser,
sink, food preparation area
Furniture: Dining table, chairs, end tables
Flooring: Imprinted concrete
Shelters: Gazebos, sunrooms, awnings, umbrellas
Outdoor Entertaining
Delray Granite’s custom granite countertops
are made to fit around BBQs and grill units.
Entertaining
Summer
Summertime, and the livin’ is easy,” goes that old
favourite. Now summer entertaining is made
simpler by bringing the kitchen outside. People
can spend more time with guests by the pool side or
in the backyard, to make the most of their summer
experience.
Made Easy
By Joanne Culley
“Outdoor kitchens have a real rustic look,” says owner
Darryl Clodd. “Most of our kitchens are done with a
polished or leather finish, to give a textured look and feel
to the countertop. The counter butts up to the BBQ unit
or goes around it, with an under-mounted farm-style,
stainless steel sink underneath the cut-out.”
Delray’s custom granite countertops
are made to fit around BBQs and grill
units. Clodd says that granite is ideal for
outside applications, as it is completely
weather-resistant, having been in the
environment over five billion years.
“Once quarried, cut, polished, and
sealed, granite is nearly impervious to
scratches, heat, etching, staining, or
weathering. It is one of nature’s most
versatile and beautiful creations,” says
Clodd. “We import, cut, shape, grind,
and manufacture whatever you need
here in our facility.”
After clients have selected the stone
and the layout of their design, Delray
staff will come to the site and create a
precise template of the project using laser
technology to ensure accuracy in the
measurements. In-house craftspeople
fabricate and custom finish the stone
before personally delivering and installing
it.
In addition to creating outdoor
kitchens, Delray can also manufacture
custom countertops, pool areas, jacuzzi
and hot tub surrounds, kitchen islands,
cutting boards, bathroom vanities and
showers, fireplace surrounds, tables,
furniture, floors, staircases, bars, as well
as fixtures for commercial applications.
They have access to stones from all over
the world, including quartz and soapstone.
“We customize our projects to meet
the time, budget, and design constraints
of each individual client, at every phase
of the job,” continues Clodd.
A family business dedicated to excellence
in service and quality, the Clodd
family has been in the metal fabrication
business for over 25 years and are now
leaders in the stone industry. They are
dedicated to providing the best quality
product by offering a vast selection
which is warehoused on site, and by investing
in the most up-to-date equipment.
Roll Relaxation Into Your Backyard
Portable, Affordable, Luxury is what best describes the quality hot
tubs offered by Roto Spa, a manufacturer and retailer in business
in the Peterborough area for 12 years. What was once only for the
wealthy is now affordable for everyone. They invite you to tour
their innovative facility and showroom to see for yourself why
these hot tubs outperform the competition.
Roto Spa is the first company in Canada to produce rotational molded
hot tubs, according to co-owners Bill Prentice and Fred Jackson.
Fred explains that rotational molding uses polyethylene powder
that is heated while it spins in a mold creating a uniform product.
This means the 6 foot 7 inch diameter tubs are strong and don’t
require support by other materials such as fiberglass. This process
makes the hot tubs less expensive to produce allowing Roto Spa
to pass on the savings to the customers. Fred also said that there
is more to the product than just high tech molding techniques.
“Polyethylene is extremely durable” says Fred Jackson. “Canoes
and kayaks are made out of it and we guarantee the shell of our
hot tubs for 10 years” he said.
He also added that the attractively designed six person all season
Roto Spa tubs offer the same quality features people expect from
modern hot tubs, such as 20 powerful jets strategically placed
for foot and back massage, ozonators, cup holders as well as LED
lighting, stainless steel cover lifts, handrails and stairs with room
for chemical storage. Adding to the savings, the shells are totally
filled with expanding foam insulation, so they retain heat more
efficiently and the unit is completely sealed, keeping mice and
other rodents out. Perhaps the best feature for owners of Roto
Spa tubs is their portability. Because the tubs are light and do not
require hard wiring, (but can be wired 220), people can take them
with them when they move or to the cottage for the summer and
then back home for the winter. “People move on average every
five years” says Fred, “and they fit in the back of a pick-up truck or
on a trailer.”
But to enjoy the benefits of a Roto Spa hot tub, customers have to
purchase one by visiting the factory showroom located at 1565
County Road 18 between Bridgenorth and Lakefield where they
will be met with excellent service. “Our business is built on service
and referrals.” Fred said with confidence.
“Buying locally is a tremendous advantage because customers
deal directly with the manufacturer and if they ever have a service
issue we are usually there the same day. They’re not dialing a 1-
800 number somewhere.” Roto Spa appeals to all ages. While
the younger crowd is into entertaining, the older crowd is often
seeking relaxation and hydrotherapy for joint or back pain.
“I think people are impressed when they come to the factory/
showroom and see how the tubs are made and how practical,
affordable and maintenance free they are.” They soon find out
why our motto is designed to reduce your stress, not create it!
Janet Greene describes
Creative Designs
For your home or cottage
By Joanne Culley
Lakeshore Designs handled the
complete set-up of her new home,
doing everything from unpacking
hundreds of boxes, arranging the
furniture, ordering new bookshelves,
putting away her books, and renovating.
Greene was out of town all summer, and
when she came back, all she had to do
was unpack her suitcase.
“The house was absolutely wonderful,”
says Greene. “There were new
kitchen counters, new draperies, the
whole house had been painted - everything
was completely ready for me to
move into. There were even fresh flowers!”
Greene says that the job was a challenge,
as she had a lot of possessions that
were in storage. “They measured the
rooms, figured out what would fit, took
the furniture and boxes out of storage,
all the while keeping on budget. They
even did some work outside, extending a
fence and building new slate steps. They
went beyond what was required to create
a very welcoming home for me.
“Angela chose everything - the paint
colours, curtains, new bed, chair recovering.
I didn’t give her any direction and
it’s just the way I would have liked it,”
continues Greene. “I couldn’t have been
more pleased, I couldn’t recommend
them more highly.”
says owner Angela Cunningham.
Their retail space at 427 George St. N. in
Peterborough showcases various room setups
for viewing. In their comfortable,
friendly atmosphere, clients are invited to
discuss their needs. Lakeshore Designs’
many years of experience in interior design
can benefit any project.
“We give a creative edge to all of our
designs,” says Cunningham. “We work
with everything from flooring to paint
colour, to draperies, to fabric, custom
furniture, and design layouts to make the
best use of the space.”
Satisfied Client
Real Estate agent Jennifer Richter is
having a new kitchen and bathroom
designed and installed by Lakeshore
Designs. “Ours is a 55 year-old house,
which is badly in need of updating,” says
Richter. “Angela is doing a wonderful job
organizing the project for renovating the
kitchen. It’s a difficult space to work with,
and I’m very happy with the design, which
is in a ‘Mission’ style. Walls have been
taken down to open up the space, and
there’s now a breakfast nook, built-in
appliances, coffee bar/desk, granite countertops,
separate pantry, and extra storage
in the kitchen. She suggested making the
range hood a focal point, and it looks
great.”
Richter says that Angela is an expert at
choosing colours and maximizing the
available space, and has also come up
with an attractive layout for the living and
dining rooms.
Kitchen Design
“We offer full-service kitchen renovations,”
says Cunningham. “We take out your old
kitchen, do the complete design and
installation of your new one, as well as
sourcing appliances, counters, flooring
and lighting.”
They take photos of the existing space
and interview the client to determine their
likes and dislikes. They have a fully
functional kitchen display in their
showroom with the Haas kitchen cabinet
line, as well as a range of other kitchen
lines to pick from. They use local contractors
for the work.
“We go over the client’s wish list, and
come back with two or three different
proposals for them,” she continues. “Our
goal is to provide the client with what
they want with a designer look while
staying on budget”.
Angela says that people want to create
a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere in their
kitchens, and are staying home more now
to dine and entertain. Popular fixtures
are task and under-counter lighting,
chandeliers, granite countertops and glass
cupboard doors.
“Kitchens are now multi-use areas.
Not only is the trend towards eat-in
kitchens, but they are also entertainment
areas, with more electronics. People watch
cooking shows on TV while they’re
preparing meals, as well as listen to music
on their stereos,” she says.
Creating your Vision
Lakeshore Designs can help you
transform your home by selecting colours,
furniture, accessories, fabrics, draperies,
cupboards, flooring, tile, artwork,
decorations, staging, countertops –
anything that’s needed to create a comfortable,
flowing, well-balanced and
liveable space.
“Making changes in your home or
cottage can give you a new lease on life. It
can help you feel refreshed and energized
to enjoy the things you really want. When
you release and let go of the old it makes
room for new things to come into your
life,” concludes Cunningham.
Boating
Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)
Saving Lives
PFDs are available in a wide range of approved types, boat is not open then you only need to wear it while you’re on
sizes and colours. While PFDs are more comfortable deck or in the cockpit.
than lifejackets because they are designed for constant
wear, they do not generally offer the same level of protection as Inflatable PFDs are NOT approved for:
lifejackets for:
. anyone under 16 years old.
. stay afloat; and
. anyone who weighs less that 36.3 kg (80lbs);
. turning you on your back so you can breathe.
. use on a personal watercraft, or
. white-water paddling activities.
Choose a PFD based on your needs and activity. If you plan
to operate at high speeds, look for a PFD with three or more
chest belts for security. If you will be boating in cold water
(water less than 15C), choose a PFD with some thermal protection.
A large selection is also available for activities such as sailboarding,
kayaking and canoeing. No matter what type of PFD
you choose, you should choose a colour that makes you easy to
see in the water.
There are many pros and cons to choosing a PFD over a
lifejacket-but remember that a PFD may not turn you on your
back if you fall in the water. The choice is yours, but think carefully
before buying.
You can also buy inflatable PFDs, but you must understand
how to use and care for them if they are to work properly. You
must also understand which activities and conditions they are
approved for. Above all, remember that you have to be wearing
an inflatable PFD for it to be approved on an open boat. If the
Inflatable PFDs come in two styles:
. Vest types can be inflated orally, manually (with a CO2
system) or automatically.
. Pouch types can be orally inflated or manually inflated by
pulling a toggle to activate a CO2 inflation system.
Although these PFDs inflate quickly, for weak swimmers it
can seem like it takes forever. All Canadian-approved inflatable
PFDs have an oral inflation tube in case the CO2 inflation
system fails. This tube could be hard to use when you are trying
to keep your head above water.
An emergency is no time to try out a new device. Inflatable
PFDs should come with an owner’s manual. Look for it and
read it carefully. Try it on under supervision and before
heading out to make sure you know how to use it.
Retirement Living
Fine Dining and Bars
The grand first floor dining room looks out onto a terraced
garden – it’s like dining in a fine hotel.
Director of Dining Services Dan Leal and his team of
certified chefs ensure that residents receive a menu that is
tailored to their special requirements.
For lunch and supper, residents have a choice between two
entrees, and if those aren’t suitable, there is always a back-up
menu of favourites for them. There are two sittings for each meal
and residents sign up for the time they prefer. Residents can
choose to have breakfast in their own suite, enjoy a
self-serve breakfast in the bistro, or come to the dining room.
A dietician is available to help plan diets based on
individual requirements, such as diabetic, renal, special
texture, or low-salt. All of the staff have food service and safe
food handling certificates.
They even have their own label from Colio Estate
Wines – it’s a Riesling that’s not available yet at the LCBO.
There are two bars in which residents and their guests can
relax and enjoy a visit. The Fireside Lounge can be made into a
private area by closing the garden doors if a more intimate
atmosphere is desired.
Care Continuum
Canterbury Gardens offers a full range of retirement options –
Retirement Living
from independent living to an enriched, assisted-living
program. There are 137 suites, with studio, one and two
bedroom options, complete with meals and housekeeping. The
residence houses approximately 160 people.
Thirty “Garden Homes” have been designed for more
independent residents, who can eat one meal daily in the
dining room, while cooking the other meals themselves
in their full kitchen. Washers and dryers are available in
these suites.
Residents need not move should their needs change.
Twenty-eight suites on the third floor offer enriched care for
those who require assistance with bathing, dressing and
medication administration.
With 24 hour on-site nursing and an emergency response
system, families can be assured that their loved ones are
receiving good care.
Adult Education
The Possibilities learning series is available on-site to residents
and non-residents. General interest courses are given
throughout the year in music history, art and art history, digital
photography, memoir writing and more.
Locally owned and operated, Canterbury Gardens offers trial
and short-term stays. For more information, please call
Next Generation
Retirement Living
Canterbury Gardens
Sunlight fills Canterbury Gardens’ three-story atrium,
which is adorned with live trees, plants, comfortable
seating and a bistro café. Like the heart of a village, it’s a
place where residents and their friends and family gather, and
where many activities are held - fitness classes, cards and
shuffleboard.
Hailed as the “Next Generation of Retirement Living”,
Canterbury Gardens embodies the best that retirement has to offer.
Active Living
Canterbury Gardens promotes healthy and active living for
both the body and mind.
Residents can swim or participate in aqua-fit classes in the
indoor therapeutic salt water pool. Those needing assistance
getting in and out of the pool can use a special lift. Massages
and therapeutic whirlpool baths are available in the spa facility.
“The hot wrap treatment is popular with those suffering
from arthritis,” says Sarah Beaudoin, Manager of Resident Services.
The fitness centre boasts exercise machines, weights, and
regular low-impact classes delivered by the Gardens of Peterborough
wellness coordinator who is a kinesiologist. She can
design individualized fitness programs for residents. There is
also a “Super Senior” fitness class to help seniors retain their
balance.
Nutrition education encourages residents to understand the
benefits of making healthy choices to ensure they get the vitamins
and minerals they need.
An on-site physiotherapist provides treatments and exercises
for residents recovering from an injury or those who want to
maintain their mobility.
Retirement Living
Worry-Free Living
At Ferghana
Spend more time
on the important things…
By Joanne Culley
With routine
maintenance taken
care of, people
often get creative
with their yards,
designing elaborate
gardens front
and back.
They’re coming up to the busy time of year at Triple
T Holdings. “We see a real surge in activity during
April when the snow birds have returned from the
south and they’re fed up with the hassles of getting someone
to look after their home while they’re away,” says Bill
Turner Jr., of Triple T Holdings Ltd. “They want the ease
of living in a condo, with someone else looking after the
maintenance.”
Located on Carnegie Avenue in the north end of
Peterborough, “Ferghana’s” town house, condo-style, bungalows
are meant for those wishing a worry-free lifestyle.
The property is taken care of throughout the seasons, with
snow being shoveled in the winter, grass cut in the summer
and leaves raked in the fall. Window washing and all external
maintenance is dealt with, as well as the future
needs of the building, including window and shingle replacement.
With routine maintenance taken care of, people
often get creative with their yards, designing elaborate
gardens front and back.
“There’s a lot more flexibility for the owner with free
time to do their own thing,” continues Turner. “It’s a
secure arrangement - people are not tied to their houses.”
Turner has seen a real shift in the demographic for those
considering condoliving.
“Whereas before people moved into a condo because
they couldn’t manage the maintenance, now we’re seeing
people in the 55plus category who could do it, but prefer
to spend their time doing more enjoyable activities, like
going to the cottage or traveling. One couple dropped
their son off at university residence, and came to view a
new condo in here on the very same day!”
Each unit in the adult-lifestyle community is customdesigned
by the owner, usually with a master bedroom on
the main floor, and one or two guest bedrooms on the
lower level. All suites have walk-ins on the main level,
some have basements with walkouts into the back yard,
others are a raised bungalow style. Turner says owners design
their space for current and future needs, so they are
not compromising their way of life, but
are also planning for the long term.
Custom design is also featured in patios,
porches, gardens and landscaping.
The town homes are built in groups of
two, three, or four, depending on the
lot chosen.
“There are efficiencies to this
style of building,” continues Turner.
“Efficiencies in construction and
maintenance, but also efficiencies for
the homeowner in terms of lower
heating bills, because of fewer outside
walls.”
The rooms are laid out to maximize
the space, with functionality and
styling having priority. They work
with people to create a design that
accommodates their needs and their
furniture - right down to a piece of art
that may need to hang on a certain
wall.
For those currently in older homes
pondering a kitchen renovation, Turner
recommends considering moving
into a condo that already has a new
kitchen AND handles other future
needs and wants.
“You don’t have to live through a
kitchen reno, with walls being ripped
out. Here everything is brand new,”
he says.
The property retains some of its
country feel, Turner says, and deer have
been spotted nearby. It’s also close to
the Riverview Park and Zoo and the
Otonabee River.
Over the past 27 years, Triple T
Holdings has built more than 450
suites, east of the river along Armour
Road, at Whitaker Mills, Paddock
Wood and Erlesgate and on Parkhill
Road West, at The Cedars Edge and
The second phase of construction is
now nearing completion, with the third
phase scheduled to begin this May.
Short Ribs
Barbeque Recipes
3 to 4 pounds beef short ribs
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 cup cider vinegar
2 cups chicken stock
2 cups water
1/2 cup ketchup
3 tablespoons tomato paste
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon dry English mustard
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne
1. Combine vinegar and sugar in a large
saucepan and simmer until mixture
thickens to a syrupy consistency, about
10 to 15 minutes. Add water, stock and
seasonings. Bring to a boil and add
ribs, simmering for 20 minutes.
2. Allow ribs to cool on a dish lined with
thick enough to coat the back of a
spoon. Cool and refrigerate. Reserve this
sauce to baste the ribs while grilling.
4. The following day, grill ribs 30 to 40
minutes turning once or twice, and
basting every 10 to 15 minutes with the
reserved sauce.
CEDAR PLANK-
GRILLED SALMON
WITH GARLIC,
LEMON AND DILL
1 (3 pound) whole filet of salmon, skin
on, scored (up to but not through the
skin) into serving pieces
6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
4 large garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup minced fresh dill
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon lemon zest, plus lemon
wedges for serving
1. Soak an untreated cedar plank (or
planks) large enough to hold a side
of salmon (5 to 7 inches wide and 16
to 20 inches long) in water, weighting
it with something heavy, like a
brick, so it stays submerged 30 minutes
to 24 hours.
2. When ready to grill, either build a
charcoal fire in half the grill or turn
grill burners on high for 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, mix oil, garlic, dill, salt,
pepper and lemon zest; rub over
salmon and into scored areas to
coat.
3. Place soaked cedar on hot grill
grate, close lid, and watch until wood
starts to smoke, about 5 minutes.
Transfer salmon to hot plank, move
salmon off direct charcoal heat or turn
burners to low, and cook covered
until salmon is just opaque throughout
(130 on a meat thermometer
inserted in the thickest section) 20 to
25 minutes or longer, depending on
thickness and grill temperature.
Let sit 5 minutes; serve with lemon
wedges.
HAM & PINEAPPLE
KABOBS
Cooked ham and pineapple chunks
threaded onto skewers and coated with
a zesty, sweet glaze.
Original recipe yield: 4 servings
Prep Time: 15 Min
Cook Time: 8 Min
Ready In: 23 Min
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
3/4 pound cooked ham, cut into 1 inch cubes
1 (15 ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained
skewers
1. Preheat grill for high heat. In a medium
bowl, mix together brown sugar,
vinegar, vegetable oil, and mustard.
Thread ham and pineapple chunks
alternately onto skewers. Lightly oil
grill grate.
2. Place skewers on the prepared grill,
and brush liberally with the brown
sugar mixture. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes,
turning frequently and basting
often. Serve when heated through
and richly glazed.
Barbequing Tip # 1
The temperature of your barbecue
changes each time you open the
lid and even the best temperature
gauge will not react instantly.
For best cooking results, try to
JALAPENO
BLUE CHEESE
BURGERS
These delicious burgers will make you
think twice about eating chicken!
Original recipe yield: 4 large burgers,
or 8 small
Prep Time: 20 Min
Cook Time: 10 Min
Ready In: 30 Min
2 pounds ground beef
6 jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped
8 ounces crumbled blue cheese
2 tablespoons onion powder
2 tablespoons garlic powder
2 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce
2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
4 slices Swiss cheese
4 hamburger buns, split
1. Preheat a grill for high heat.
2. In a large bowl, combine the ground
beef, jalapeno peppers, blue cheese,
onion powder, garlic powder, tamari
and salt. Mix well using your hands.
Pat lightly into 4 large fat patties.
3. Place patties on the grill, and cook
for about 8 minutes per side, or until
well done. Place a slice of cheese on
top of each patty, and cover the grill
until the cheese melts. Serve on buns
with your favorite toppings.
Barbeque
Salmon
Salmon steaks or fillets, as needed
1 cup mayonnaise
Seasoning Salt
Salt and pepper
Dried dill weed
1⁄4 cup fresh lemon juice
1⁄4 to 1⁄2 cup milk
1 sm onion, minced
1. Choose a shallow pan that is okay
to sit on grill. Make a “boat” of
aluminum foil and line a shallow pan.
2. Place salmon on foil.
3. Spread each piece with mayonnaise.
Drizzle lemon juice on each piece.
4. Sprinkle with seasoned salt, salt and
pepper, dill weed and onion. Pour
milk to 1/4-inch into aluminum
boat.
5. Place pan on grill and cook about
1⁄2 hour or until fish flakes easily
with a fork
Barbequing Tip # 2
Cook more than you can eat!
Barbecue freezes very well and quite
often becomes more flavorful as the
seasonings and blends are reheated
at a later date.
Cook, eat and be happy knowing
that you will have enough barbecue
in the freezer for those cold,
wet and rainy days!
Beer Can Chicken
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon granulated onion
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 whole chicken, 4-5 pounds
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 can (16 ounces) beer (tall boy)
1. In a small bowl combine the rub ingredients.Remove
and discard the
neck, giblets and any excess fat from
the chicken. Rinse the chicken, inside
and out, under cold water and
pay dry with paper towels.
2. Lightly spray or brush all over with
the vegetable oil aånd season, inside
and out, with the rub.
3. Open the beer can and pour off half
of the beer. Set the half-full can on a
flat surface and slide the chicken
over the top so the can fits inside the
cavity. Transfer the bird to the grill,
keeping it upright.
4. Carefully balance the bird on its two
legs and the can. Grill over indirect
Medium heat until the juices run
clear and the internal temperature
reaches 170o F in the breast and
180oF in the thickest part of the
thigh, 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 hours. Wearing
barbeque mitts, carefully remove the
chicken and the car from the grill,
being careful not to spill the beer - it
will be hot. Let the chicken rest for
about 10 minutes before lifting it
from the can. Discard the beer.
5. Cut the chicken into serving pieces.
Serve warm. Makes 4 to 6 servings.
Barbeque
Ribeye Steak
“You won’t believe it, but a well done
steak with the moist, melt-in-yourmouth
flavor of a medium rare. All you
need is cola, garlic powder, salt, pepper,
bbq sauce and bacon.”
2 (10 ounce) marbled beef rib-eye steaks
2 teaspoons garlic powder, or to taste
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 (12 ounce) cans cola-flavored soda
2 cups barbeque sauce
8 slices bacon
1. Score steaks on both sides in a diamond
pattern using a sharp knife.
Punch the fatty areas with the tip of
the knife. Sprinkle a thin coating of
garlic powder over both sides of the
steaks, then sprinkle with salt and
pepper. Rub to get the seasoning
into all of the scores.
2. Place steaks in a shallow dish, and
pour the cola over them. Cover, and
marinate in the refrigerator for 4
hours, turning steaks over every
hour or so. During the last hour,
coat the steaks with a thin layer of
barbeque sauce.
3. Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat.
4. Lightly oil the grilling surface. Place
steaks on the grill over high heat,
and cook until almost burnt on each
side, about 4 minutes per side. Reduce
the grill’s heat to medium-low,
or move steaks to a cooler part, and
place the bacon strips on top of
them. Cover, and slow cook for 10
minutes per side.
5. Spread a thin layer of barbeque sauce
over the steaks during the last few
minutes of cooking, and allow it to
cook until dry for a glazed effect.
