The Business of Barbeque...It’s Barbeque Season…“You can make an entire meal on the Big Green Egg– it not only BBQs meat, fish and poultry, it can alsobake pies, pizzas, and even a 26 lb. turkey,” she says.“It’s made of a space age ceramic material, with double-wallconstruction. You can use it all winter withoutlosing heat.”The cooker is modelled on an ancient clay cookercalled a “kamado” and is available in five sizes. Itdoesn’t rust and comes with lifetime warranty on theceramics. Myers says it works like a wood stove in thatit has a top draft.“You can cook for hours and hours on it – as a test wecooked for 17 hours on one bag of hickory charcoal, which is equal to two or three propane tanks,” she says.“The large size is sufficient for the average family, whilethe extra large is great for entertaining larger groups.”Graham Cornthwaite, owner of Burning Sensations, has noticed that people are buying higher qualityBBQs that will last many years.“With our climate, we want to get outside as muchas we can, and when we spend money on a BBQ, wewant to make sure it will stand up over time,” saysCornthwaite. “Our Napoleon BBQ is the best BBQ onthe market, made locally in Barrie, by a small familyownedcompany. It has a good back-up warranty - tenyears on the burners, propane or natural gas.”Napoleon BBQs are available in lower priced modelsto built-in islands, with rear rotisseries and infra-redside burners.Outdoor KitchensJason Lichter, Marketing Manager of Friendly Fires, says that people are travelling less and spending moretime at home, so they feel that they can spend themoney they didn’t spend on a vacation, on upgradingtheir outdoor living space.“People are becoming more interested in outdoor kitchens,to cut down on running in and out of the house.People are cooking their whole meal on the BBQ andare buying larger ones with rotisseries as well as sideburners, so that they can cook in one spot outside, especially when it’s hot inside.”There’s also a trend towards charcoal BBQs, which hesays are doing fairly well, because of the flavour theyimpart to the food.“We’re selling a lot of higher end charcoal grills, theykeep the food more moist compared to steel grills, which tend to dry the food out,” he says.He says that there is also a switch to natural gas, whichhe says is more economical and convenient, as opposedto propane tanks, which have to be filled up.Some are making their outdoor living easier by bringingthe whole kitchen outside. People can spend moretime with guests by the pool side or in the backyard, tomake the most of their summer experience.“Outdoor kitchens have a real rustic look,” says ownerDarryl Clodd of Delray Granite. “Most of our kitchensare done with a polished or leather finish, to givea textured look and feel to the countertop. The counterbutts up to the BBQ unit or goes around it, with anunder-mounted farm-style, stainless steel sink underneaththe cut-out.”Delray’s custom granite countertops are made to fitaround BBQs and grill units. Clodd says that graniteis ideal for outside applications, as it is completelyweather-resistant, having been in the environment forover five billion years.“Once quarried, cut, polished, and sealed, granite isnearly impervious to scratches, heat, etching, staining,or weathering. It is one of nature’s most versatileand beautiful creations,” says Clodd. “We import, cut, shape, grind, and manufacture whatever you need herein our facility.”Outdoor rooms can be designed to imitate indoorkitchens, with expansive counter space and fullfood preparation areas complete with sinks andplumbing. There are many flooring options for outdoor kitchens.“The preferred choice for a foundation is concrete. Inparticular, patterned concrete has the benefit of beingpleasing to the eye, very durable, and extremely solid,”says Mike Van de Bor of Van de Bor Paving. “Peopleare often surprised at the range of looks that patternedconcrete can provide, we can even mimic the lookof wood!”Whether your backyard oasis is modest or luxurious, there’s no better place to share a meal with loved onesduring the summer months.12 June 2010 Business Advantage Business Advantage June 2010 13

EXPERTS SPEAKEXPERTS SPEAKWisdom of Warren BuffettWarren Buffett, one of the most eminentinvestors of our times, recently released hisyear-end letter to Berkshire Hathawayshareholders. As usual, the Oracle of Omaha’scomments are filled with a good deal ofwit and candour. Where else could you hear Tom Weichela Fortune 500 CEO say he enjoys issuingnew stock “about as much as we relish prepping for a colonoscopy”?Berkshire Hathaway is a conglomerate that Warren Buffettmanages. Simply, it holds investments in other companies. Andthese companies’ values go to individual shareholders of BerkshireHathaway. In this way, Berkshire Hathaway is like a mutualfund - one entity that holds shares in other entities, to the “mutual”benefit of its shareholders. One of the most valuable investingtips reiterated by Buffett in this and previous letters is this:When you invest, you own long-term businessesBerkshire Hathaway owns other businesses, such as Coca Cola,GEICO, General Electric, Goldman Sachs, Proctor and Gamble, and Burlington Northern Railway. They are all businesses.Buffett once said, “As far as I am concerned, the stock marketdoesn’t exist. It is there only as a reference to see if anybody isoffering to do anything foolish.”He still means it, and all you need to do is read the first pageof Berkshire’s report for proof. Berkshire monitors its annualprogress by listing the growth of its book value, not stock price- something it always has done.“Year-to-year market prices can be extraordinarily erratic,”writes Buffett. “Even evaluations covering as long as a decadecan be greatly distorted by foolishly high or low prices at thebeginning or end of the measurement period.”Similarly, Buffett isn’t concerned with what an individualstock’s price has done in the past month or year, or even thepast few years. Instead, he looks at the long-term prospects ofthose businesses. So why, as investors, do we measure the stock price or the unitprice of a fund as an assessment of how well we are doing? Weshould be more concerned about how the underlying businessesare doing and if their net worth is growing, rather than the dayto-dayprice gyrations. This article submitted by Tom Weichel CLU of The Protectors Group, 215 GeorgeSt., Peterborough, 748-5181 ext 229, email: tomweichel@protectorsgroup.comMaking a “Connection”with Those You MeetOne of the most home-hitting revelations I’veever had was listening to John Maxwell speakingat a leadership simulcast recently, aboutconnecting with people. His book “EveryoneCommunicates Few Connect” is an awesome Kerri Hullwork, and I highly recommend it to everyone in business.Point # 1– It’s Not About MeWhen we’re out networking, meeting new people, and trying tobuild relationships, we must always remember to put the otherperson first. Relationship marketing, like all other kinds of relationships, depends on the other person’s perception of whetheror not you care about them. Everyone has an innate desire tobe liked and cared about, and if you will take the focus off ofyourself and put it on the other person, you’ll be better off in somany ways. By asking questions and listening, instead of doingall the talking, you’ll be able to get insight into the needs of thatperson, and you’ll be in a much better position to show themhow your product or service can fill those needs. Also, whenyou listen and ask questions, you’ll soon be able to find commonground in which to begin building your relationship.Chances are, that person will walk away feeling much betterhaving spoken to you, and believing you are the best conversationalistthey’ve met in a long time.Point # 2- Thoughtfulness – Bless and Thank OthersWe’re all busy people and but it only takes a moment to make aphone call, send an email, drop someone a note, give a referral,or send a card to someone we know or have just recently met.The days are loaded with opportunities to show someone elsethat they matter, and inevitably we will always reap what we sow. When we take the time to show thankfulness to others, we builda reputation of one who stands above the crowd. You will see theresulting returns if the form of: referrals, repeat business and a personin the mirror who feels happy and satisfied with him or herself.Point # 3- Learn Effective Communication SkillsMany people believe that because they know how to talk, theyknow how to communicate. This is a huge mistake, and onethat can cost you a ton of business. How many times have youyou didn’t know you were using, by signals of apathy towardthem that you didn’t know you were sending off? Probablymore times than you think. And since we never know whatgolden key another person holds, remember “What you don’tknow, DOES hurt you, even if you don’t KNOW it hurt you.Take the time to learn effective communication, and watch thedoors of opportunity open before you. This article submitted by Kerri Hull, Founder of two fast growing networksin Peterborough; Peterborough Moms Group and Peterborough Business Network.Karrie welcomes everyone to attend one of her Speed Networking sessions free.To register go to www.peterborough-business-network.comBenefits of HSTStarting on July 1, 2010, you’ll see aharmonized sales tax in Ontario. The13% HST combines the 5% GST andthe 8% PST into one tax to be collectedby the federal government. Small andmedium-sized enterprises are the backboneof Ontario’s economy. By harmo-Sharla Trudellnizing the two sales taxes businesses will save administrationcosts which will result in lower pricing. It is anticipatedthat 80 per cent of business savings will flow through toconsumers in one year.Converting the PST into a value-added tax and harmonizingit with the GST would reduce the cost of goods thatOntario exports making Ontario more competitive, andincrease jobs. Business clients will be able to claim input taxcredits for the HST they pay in the course of theircommercial activities, including the tax they pay onaccounting services.According to Certified General Accountants Ontario, having the HST in place will attract businesses to Ontario. There will also be $1.1 billion in income tax cuts, by reducingthe first tax rate from 6.05 per cent to 5.05 per cent in2010; tax rates for small businesses to be reduced from 5.5per cent to 4.5 per cent to help small businesses thrive inOntario. The combination of these two tax initiatives willcreate more jobs, generate consumer spending, reduceadministration costs of having two separate taxes andtherefore lower costs for consumers.Like their counterparts in the Nova Scotia, NewBrunswick, Newfoundland and Saskatchewan, a valueadded tax system, such as HST or QST, is a model that theprovince will benefit from in years to come.Sharla Trudell is a certified Management Accountant.
