Former owner Don Bennett (left) welcomes new owner Ben Sämann.
Viamede Resort Under
New Ownership
On December 6, the Viamede resort on Stoney Lake came
under new ownership. Swiss Canadian hotelier Ben Sämann
intends for the 125 year old resort to be one of Ontario’s
top 4-Star resorts by 2015.
Over the winter months there will be minor renovations
and upgrades to Viamede’s 33 rooms and 19 cottages. The
137 year old Inn at Mount Julian, next to Viamede’s main
building, will also be relaunched, with a new menu focusing
on local foods.
“We want our guests to have a dining experience that
rivals the majestic outdoors it overlooks,” says Sämann.
The year-round resort is popular during the winter
months, with its expansive wooded area in a natural game
preserve. Guests can go cross-country skiing on 6 km of
trails, snow shoe, skate, toboggan or ice fish on Stoney
Lake. Summer activities at the 2000 foot waterfront include
water sports such as waterskiing and wakeboarding,
boating, swimming and family recreation programs.
Sämann is passionate about the environment.
“Viamede’s 165 acres of pristine wilderness have
hundreds of indigenous species,” he says. “We want to
preserve the beauty of the area for the long term.”
Amenities at the resort include three restaurants, a
full-service spa and salon and onsite wedding services, with
lakeside wedding ceremony, chapel and lakeside reception
for up to 200 guests. In addition, there are professional
facilities for conferences, training seminars, sales retreats,
and meetings for groups of 5 to 100.
Viamede is located on Mount Julian-Viamede Rd., which
is five miles past Burleigh Falls off Hwy. 28. For information,
Expansion Underway At
The Peterborough Airport
The Peterborough Airport is undergoing a $28.6 million expansion
project funded by the City of Peterborough and
the federal and provincial governments. The project includes
strengthening and lengthening the runway by 2,000
feet to 7,000 feet, building a partial taxiway extension that
will run parallel to the runway, providing new aprons and
strengthening of existing aprons for aircraft parking, lighting
and fencing upgrades, improvements to roadways and
commercial/industrial lot preparation and servicing. A new
air terminal building is also under construction. The majority
of upgrade work was completed in late 2010.
“Our goal is to accommodate larger aircraft, such as the
Boeing Business Jet (737) and other narrow body aircraft
such as the Airbus 320, to support opportunities for existing
and new businesses,” says Nancy Hewitt, Airport Operations
Coordinator. “We’re actively working to attract more
business to this area as the airport plays a significant role in
our future regional economic development.”
The airport, which is owned by the City of Peterborough,
serves not only the aviation community, but also a wide
range of businesses, including private, commercial, medical
transportation, OPP, and more. The entire project is expected
to be completed by spring 2011.
Grand Opening For PerDiem:
Offices That Work!
Per Diem: Offices That Work! announces that their Grand
Opening and Open House on January 21, 2011 was a great
success. They proudly showed off their elegant offices and
boardrooms at the newly renovated, retrofitted, and restored
Schandry Building, at 459 George St N., Peterborough.
Per Diem: Offices That Work! fulfills a need for executive
offices, support and services that do not require a large
outlay of capital and long term commitments associated
with traditional offices. Technology allows more people to
work from home or on the road rendering the standard office
model redundant for many professionals. Modern communication
and networking devices however, cannot replace
the effectiveness of face to face meetings with clients and
business associates in an environment designed for success.
CLASS OF 2010
Congratulations To
The Class Of 2010
A Tribute to Local Businesses’ 2010 Accomplishments & Excellence
By Joanne Culley
Anyone in business will tell you it’s a tough world out
there. Being successful in business requires a number
of specific skills that we aren’t all necessarily
born with. All too often we see good people with
good ideas who set out on the entrepreneurial path, but have
real difficulty staying the course. In contrast, each year a number
of local businesses stand head and shoulders above the crowd.
Some are notable as winners of business awards, such
as those sponsored by the Greater Peterborough Chamber
of Commerce, the Kawartha Lakes Chamber of Commerce,
the Peterborough Business Woman of the Year Award and the
Peterborough & Kawarthas Home Builders Association. Others
may have earned awards from their professional associations or
other national, provincial or regional business groups.
Others stand out because they have taken leadership and
found original ways to extend the influence of their businesses
in the community. This can happen through a move to a new
location, a major renovation or addition of space, an increase
in staff, additions of new product lines, and other
innovations.
The following pages feature local businesses and their
accomplishments. We, at the Business Advantage, also
congratulate the Class of 2010.
Business Awards
The Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce presented
Business Excellence awards in 16 categories last October
at the Trentwinds International Centre.
The Business Citizen of the Year recipient
was Mary Carolyn Hart of Lazer Graphics
and Employer of the Year was Brand-
Health.
The East Kawartha Chamber of Commerce
presented their annual Awards of
Excellence at the Viamede Conference
Resort and Spa. The Outstanding
Business of the Year award went to
Kawartha Country Wines, with the
Corporate Citizen of the Year award
going to Sue Mattucci of Lockside
Trading Company.
The Peterborough Business Woman of the
Year award last spring went to Jean Grant, owner of The Toy
Shop on Hunter Street. Runners-up were Elaine Webster,
administrative manager of the Community Innovation and
Innovation Network (COIN), and Sheridan Graham, general
manager of strategic services and corporate projects for the
County of Peterborough.
The Peterborough & Kawarthas Home Builders Association
held its eighth annual Kawartha Awards of Distinction
Gala at the Holiday Inn Waterfront. The awards honour
members who are homebuilders, renovators, new home designers,
and sales and marketing professionals. Companies
taking home awards included Evergreen Home & Cottage,
the Kawartha Lakes Construction, Mason Homes, Linwood
Custom Homes, Direct Energy, Habitat for Humanity, Stoney
Lakes Fine Homes, R & M Smith Contracting, and RWH
Construction.
Business Milestones
The year 2010 was a milestone year for many
local businesses. Sign-a-Rama celebrated their
fifth anniversary as a full-service sign shop that
manufactures and installs interior and exterior
signage.
Celebrating its thirtieth anniversary, The
Pizza Factory is known for its hospitality and
homemade cuisine. Promotional products business
Welsh Marketing, owned by Janet Welsh,
celebrated their 20th anniversary providing
unique branded merchandise and wearables that
make a statement.
Siblings Monika Carmichael and Frank Mandeljc
Jr. of Trent Valley Honda celebrated their
35th anniversary as a family owned business in
Peterborough.
Nightingale Nursing marked 35 years in business
and last summer, Peterborough Appliances
celebrated 25 years as a successful, familyrun
business. In 2010, Doughty Masonry
Centre celebrated 60 years of supplying high
quality masonry products for residential, commercial
and industrial uses.
Alison Realty, a fixture on the corner of George and
Charlotte streets for over ten years, now has a new name - Realty
Executives Alison Ltd.
The Women’s Business Network of Peterborough is in its
50th anniversary season. Founded in April, 1961 by two business
women, Margaret Ainsworth and Margaret Steeves, the network
has grown and changed over the years. A Gala event will
be held the evening of May 4 at The Venue on George Street,
with keynote speaker Natalie MacMaster. An all-day workshop
will be held the following day, May 5 at Trent University
inluding speakers Rona Maynard, Linda Kash, and Nadja Piatka.
Retail Expansion
Last year saw ongoing expansion to Peterborough’s retail sector.
Building on the success of the multi-million dollar expansion
and renovation of the centre last year, Lansdowne Place
opened an additional 15 new stores, and saw seven existing
retailers either expand or renovate.
“The past two years have been really exciting,” says Helen
Edwards, Marketing Director “And 2011 promises to be just
as impressive as we continue to attract popular national brands
that consumers typically had to leave the region for.”
Construction
Commercial construction activity last year was up from 2009,
according to Bob Waldron, Chief Building Official, Manager
Andrew Blazey, General
Manager (inset) and
employees from the
Siemens Milltronics
surface mount team
in the Building Division at City Hall.
“Commercial, industrial and institutional construction
made up about 35 percent of the building in Peterborough,
with the rest being residential. Residential, as reflected in the
number of housing starts, is down from last year,“ Waldron
says.
Major building projects in 2010 included the new Shoppers
Drug Mart on Lansdowne St. W., the Mapleridge Seniors
Centre on Brealey Drive, the lawn bowling club on McDonnel
Street, an engineering office building on Jameson Drive and a
consulting firm office on Major Bennett Drive.
Many downtown buildings are being renovated and refurbished,
including the Market Hall, an over $5 million project,
The Venue, the Per Diem Shandry Building, all on George
Street and the Kawartha Endodontics building on Water
Street.
The non-profit organization, Habitat for Humanity, built a
record of three homes in 2010, the first year that more than
one home had been built. One was an environmentally friendly
home using green technology, built with help from students
from Fleming College’s Sustainable Building Design and
Construction program. Five more homes are scheduled to be
built in 2011.
With these and other innovative projects, Peterborough
and the area will continue to grow into the future.
Evergreen Power Ltd. Announces
Independent Launch
Tim Burke, Chief Operating Officer of Evergreen Power Ltd., is
pleased to announce the independent launch in 2010 of Evergreen Power
Ltd, formerly Evergreen Power Solutions, a division of Evergreen Home
and Cottage Inc. “Evergreen Power has grown substantially in 2010,
mainly because of the growth in the solar energy industry,” says Burke.
Evergreen Power has been installing numerous grid-tie solar projects
throughout the province under the Microfit and FIT programs provided
by the Ontario government through its Green Energy Act.
“We are building our own 10 kilowatt solar electric tracker system on
Fleetwood Road in Lindsay – the tracker system enables the panels to
follow the path of the sun to capture the most energy,” continues Burke.
“We have also installed a 10 kilowatt rooftop solar PV system at Merrett
Home Hardware in Peterborough.”
Solar power, together with other forms of renewable energy, is enabling
the shutdown of coal-fired generating plants, thereby creating cleaner air
and reducing health care costs. Solar power systems help reduce peak
loads on the grid because they produce power during peak times when
electrical demand is highest. Solar power is generated closer to the point
of consumption, reducing loads on aging grid infrastructure and reducing
the need to build expensive new gas-fired or nuclear power plants.
Evergreen Home And Cottage
Honoured Award Winners
Evergreen Home and Cottage was honoured with two awards and was
a finalist in five additional categories at the Peterborough and Kawarthas
Home Builders’ Association Awards of Distinction last year.
They won the Most Outstanding Single Detached Home for a Custom-
Built Home under 2,200 sq. ft. for an open concept conventional framed
summer home they designed and built on Balsam Lake.
“It was challenging to build on an island throughout the four seasons,”
says Cathy Burke, Vice President. “We kept the natural beauty of the lot
and used an open concept heritage design that retained the cottage atmosphere
in the use of colours and building materials.”
Interior finishes are rustic – the wood burning fireplace is clad with
fieldstone, there are wide plank pine floors throughout, and the pine ceilings
add warmth. The cathedral ceilinged great room and large lakefront windows
let in natural light. A Waterloo Biofilter was installed to minimize the
impact of waste management. A screened porch brings the outside in.
Evergreen also won the Most Outstanding Kitchen Renovation award
for their transformation of an outdated kitchen into a functional space
with an enlarged bay window, plenty of cupboards and a family eating
area. Tiled floors, solid surface countertops, glass-fronted cabinetry, and
glass tile backsplashes combine better function with beauty and creativity
in design. Evergreen was also voted Home Renovator of Choice in 2010
for the Lindsay area.
Pharmacist, Murad Younis, Doctor of Pharmacy
Westmount Pharmacy Earns
Outstanding National Recognition
Murad Younis Healthcare Inc. (MYHC) which includes
Westmount Pharmacy and Seamless Care Drug Therapy
has been accredited with Accreditation Canada. As of now,
MYHC manages the only accredited pharmacy in Eastern
Ontario. This outstanding achievement demonstrates continuing
professional commitment to improving the quality of health
care services for patients of Murad Younis HealthCare Inc.
Accreditation Canada (AC) is a not-for-profit, independent
organization that has been operating since 1958 to assist
health care organizations from both private and public sectors
in Canada to bring their healthcare services in line with the
highest national standards of current practice. Normally,
organizations the size of Peterborough Regional Health
Centre, or even large Toronto hospitals, seeks out and
obtains accreditation through Accreditation Canada. That
Murad Younis Health Care was able to attain this status
with comparatively smaller size and manpower further underscores
how important this recognition is.
The following is a paragraph from The Accreditation
survey report that sheds some light on the outstanding practice
environment that contributed to the decision to award
Accreditation status to Murad Younis Health Care.
“It is evident that resources are dedicated to making improvements
to client care and safety. Examples of this are
numerous and include the fact that the clinicians continue
to take continuing education to improve their ability to
care for their clients and the staff dedicate considerable
time to outside clinical work that is unpaid, such as sitting
on committees and providing medication education sessions.
New technology continues to be introduced that improves
medication compliance and safety. New infrastructure is
planned to improve the experience for clients and staff
alike.” as quoted in The Surveyors’ report.
Evidence for “clinicians continue to take continuing education
to improve their ability to care for their clients” Pharmacists
at MYHC have obtained the following clinical specialties:
• Pharm. D. (Doctor of Pharmacy)
• Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist
• Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist
• Board Certified Nutrition Support Pharmacist
• Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist
• 3 Certified Geriatric Pharmacists
• 2 Certified Diabetes Educators
• Certified Respiratory Educator
Evidence for “New technology continues to be introduced that
improves medication compliance and safety.” MYHC implemented
an automated “blister packaging” program that organizes
patients’ medications according to their weekly schedule in
a personalized, convenient, and portable container. All of these
innovative uses of technology are meant to make the patient’s
medication-taking experience simpler and more convenient.
Evidence of “New infrastructure is planned to improve the
experience for clients and staff alike.” MYHC. underwent
renovations to build sterile compounding facilities where
intravenous medications of all types are prepared and are
then delivered all over the region by a fleet of delivery service
representatives. In this way, life-saving medications are
brought right to the patient’s door, wherever they live, reducing
trips to the hospital and easing the burden on our
health care system.
Creating Your Lifestyle At Home
Since 1998, Angie Chapman-Anagnostou’s company Interiors Just
for You has been offering design services for residential, new construction,
real estate and small business clients.
One of her recent projects was a vacation home on a 100 acre farm
property. A turn-key situation for her client included supervising contractors
for renovations, designing and decorating the three level home, a wine
cellar and outfitting the house so it was ‘move in’ ready for her clients.
“It is important that I listen to the client’s needs and wishes so that I
can incorporate their lifestyle in the design plan,” Angie says.
Angie’s services range from color consultation to complete design
plans; window and floor treatments, furniture and accessory selection
and professional home staging. She chooses to source furniture and
other accessories locally where she can, in order to support the neighbouring
economy.
Angie feels that home staging is an underutilized resource. “When
selling your home, it’s important to make it appealing to potential buyers,
enabling you to sell it quickly for the highest value,” she says.
An accredited International Staging and Redesign Professional and a
member of International Design and Decorating Professionals, Angie
is updating her website this month with all new photos. For more
M & M Disposals - Environmental
Practices Award Winner
M & M Disposals was honoured last year with the Environmental Practices
Award from the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce. In 2007
they won the Business Leadership Award from the County of Peterborough.
Employing from between 20 and 25 people, the company’s 13 trucks do
curb side waste pick-up from about 900 business customers, as well as
10,000 residents in Peterborough County, including Douro/Dummer,
Asphodel/Norwood, Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield, Havelock, and Otonabee/
South-Monaghan.
The other aspect of the business is processing construction waste, which
they have been doing for five years.
“Construction waste is brought to us by haulers from local demolitions
and we process it onsite,” says owner Mike Mundell. “It’s loaded into the
system by excavators, and goes down a line where the wood, concrete, metal
and cardboard are extracted, which we recycle. What remains is shipped to
an incinerator in Niagara Falls, New York.”
The business was started 33 years ago by Mundell’s parents, who have
since retired. “It’s a pretty straightforward system, we try to keep it simple
and efficient,” he says.
In addition, they have their own cardboard paper plant which bales up
paper for shipment.
Breakthrough Medical Device
Receives Canadian Patent
Canada’s PKA SoftTouch Corporation was founded in October 2005 by Dick
Crawford P. Eng and Dr. Pankaj Modi to design and develop a cost-effective,
painless, minimally invasive medical device for the treatment of chronic diseases
such as diabetes.
Mr. Crawford and Dr. Modi envisioned an innovative device that would
leave nerve junctions undisturbed, avoid the sensation of pain and allow for
simple painless drug administration into the skin layers.
Several years of painstaking research and development led to the completion
of a successful working prototype. Manufactured jointly in Peterborough by a
local design and manufacturing firm and a thermo-plastic injection moulding
firm, it is the first device in the world that can deliver drug materials into the
skin without pain. Human clinical trials done at St. Joseph Hospital’s Diabetes
Research Unit in Toronto, Ontario proved the efficacy of the design.
Last fall, PKA SoftTouch, in collaboration with Trent University’s Innovation
Cluster, conducted test and production runs in preparation for human clinical
trials, which will soon be taking place.
The small size and convenience of the PKA SoftTouch device makes it discreet
and easy to use anywhere on the body, raising the potential for patient acceptance.
People who would be tempted to skip their shots to avoid pain would find it
easier to follow a positive therapeutic regimen. The initial thrust of the microneedle
device is the diabetes market but it would also be suitable for other
injectible drugs such as heparin, narcotics, vaccines, etc.
PKA SoftTouch Corp. has received Canadian and South African patents
for this device. The U.S. patent is nearing completion, while worldwide
patents are pending in more than 10 countries.
Development. Goals and objectives were set for each pillar
with the overall goal of increasing the standard of living and
the quality of life for all residents in the region.
Specific to agriculture, the GPA EDC will strive to provide
rural areas with access to economic services and expand all
aspects of the natural resources value chains in a manner
that addresses the changing market place and builds on the
development of new products and processes.
The Strategic Plan outlines goals for each of the pillars
under the following areas:
• Building a sustainable economy
• Attracting and maintaining a permanent/seasonal population
that contributes to a skilled and adaptable labour force
• Addressing health and housing by promoting wellness,
providing accessible and quality health care, and by meeting
the infrastructure continuum of housing needs
• Respecting our culture and heritage and promoting an
emerging and diverse economy
Future looks Good For Agriculture
In The Peterborough Area
By Kate Young and Karen Jopling, GPA EDC
Over the next year the GPA EDC will focus on the
following objectives to meet these goals in the area of agriculture:
• Foster the development of local value-added production and
processing
• Retain the agricultural use of all classes of agricultural lands
• Attract new producers to the area to take up land going out
of production
• Decrease youth out migration by presenting careers in a rural
setting as a viable option for local youth
• Develop new non-traditional agricultural niche markets
based on ethnic and other preferences
• Increase and expand local market penetration through a
robust and expanding Kawartha Choice FarmFresh initiative
• Building on the Dairy Goat study Centre of Excellence for
Small Ruminants
Annual programming for the GPA EDC will be built
around these objectives over the next four years. In addition,
the GPA EDC will continue to consult with the Agricultural
Advisory Committee (a sub-committee of the GPA EDC
Board of Directors) to ensure that the needs of the local
agricultural industry are being met through the projects and
events that are undertaken by the corporation. Information
will also be gathered from members of the industry at the
second annual “Our Fields, Our Future Agricultural
Symposium” being held on January 19.
north of Highway 7. Parents, Robert and Laura, are still involved
and continue to run the three acre pick-your-own strawberry
and David and Cathy and their children Steven (who helps
Brett and Rebecca mainly work in the dairy operation with
150 Holsteins. During strawberry season they all help with
planting and picking the flats for pre-paid orders.
“All of our family members work on the farm. Both the
men and the women are needed to milk three times a day
(most farms just milk two times daily), feed and hay; about the
only thing Cathy and I don’t do is drive the tractors,” continues
Sherry. The children range in age from 11 to 19 years old.
The family has won many awards over the years, including
the Top Herd Management Award from Dairy Herd Improvement
(a milk recording system that allows farmers to track
their most profitable cows), the Master Breeder Shield,
Holstein Canada’s highest honour, and has bred award
winning cows such as Embrdale Emily Charles, winner of the
All-Canadian Jr. 2-year old, 4-year old and mature cow awards.
Even though running a dairy farm is a 365-day a year commitment,
the families are very involved in their community.
They take part in the 4H and Holstein clubs, youth sports,
volunteering on school councils and in the classroom.
The Stockdale family received the award last October at
the Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre.
New Billboard And Merger
For Green Tractors
The merger of the five dealers brings economy of sales
to their locations, as well as a strong management group
Grant Conrad, Business Manager of Green
Tractors Inc., says that they really had fun creating
their massive, new billboard at the Lindsay
Agricultural Society’s Fairgrounds on
Highway 7.
“It was quite a challenge,” he says. “It was the first time
anyone had done anything like that, creating a 20 x 80 feet
billboard onto a coverall. It was a big project. The material
was laminated onto fabric and it was difficult to get the signage
onto the arc of the coverall. Auto Trim in Lindsay did
a great job in carrying it out. We feel good that we found a
creative way to support the non-profit Lindsay Agricultural
Society by funnelling marketing dollars from our company
and John Deere to this valuable local organization that does
so much to support the agricultural community.”
In February, 2010, Green Tractors of Omemee and Port
Perry merged with three other John Deere locations in Nobleton,
Brampton and Milton. Ken Svendsen, co-CEO of
the company, says that it’s a merger of east and west.
“The merger of the five dealers brings economy of sales
to our locations, as well as a strong management group.
We now have the size and purchasing power to offer the
best value for our customers. There is no change to the
dealerships - we have the same friendly staff and service
our customers expect,” says Svendsen. “The merger reflects
the evolution and vitality of the agricultural business in our
region.”
Ken Svendsen started the Green Tractors dealership
in Omemee in 1992, and merged with the Port Perry
dealership in 2004. The western dealership has been
family-owned for forty years.
Green Tractors’ customers are farm operators, homeowners
and construction companies. The stores in Omemee and
Port Perry sell the full John Deere product line including
combines, tractors, harvesters and other farm equipment,
as well as used farm machinery and equipment rentals. In
addition to agricultural and residential equipment, they
sell commercial construction equipment, golf and turf
equipment, home and landscaping equipment and more.
Farm Auctions & Farm real
Estate Go hand-in-hand By Joanne Culley
Royal Lepage Kawartha Lakes Realty Inc. sales
representative Kevin Avery announces that he and
his partner Doug Lowes have just acquired the
Lindsay Livestock Exchange, an auction business,
specializing in all types of livestock and farm equipment,
featuring a beautiful show barn for purebred and specialty
auctions of higher end livestock.
“The two businesses go hand-in-hand,” says Kevin Avery,
who has specialized in farm real estate for 17 years. “Selling
farm properties as well as the equipment and livestock that
go with it are complementary.” It’s a one stop shop for the
agricultural industry.
The auction barn is located at 2138 Little Britain Rd.,
running every Friday starting at 11 a.m., set amongst many
agricultural businesse,s it’s perfect for the farming community -
they can get all their business done in one location at one time.
“The weekly auction is the hub of agricultural activity in
the area, with a variety of items for sale, everything from
livestock implements, trucks – a lot of business is done in those
seats,” continues Avery. “Sometimes if a company or farm is
going out of business, or downsizing, there will be hundreds of
people in attendance. During a six or seven hour sale, you can
raise a lot of money for the people you are selling for. Often
more than they could raise if selling the items individually.
At auction it brings all of the people out who have an interest
in their items. With our state-of-the-art web site we have
streaming video of the livestock or items they are selling,
reaching a far broader market than traditional methods of
marketing.”
Lowes and Avery also do offsite auction sales for machinery,
furniture, woodworking tools, and even real estate. Lowes
brings his professional knowledge of horses and machinery to
the mix. The two recently organized a toy and gift sale at
Christmas, selling factory overruns.
“Auctions are a great leveller, you can see your competition
and know what the other person is offering. They are good
when time is of the essence. Auctions can be done in 30 days,
whereas a real estate deal can sometimes take longer,” says
Avery. “Auctions are a good way to bring things to a head, sell
off quickly, rather than over a few months.”
Kevin Avery has worked in farm real estate since 1994, and
has sold many farms to both foreign and domestic buyers over the
years. He says that sales of agricultural land to farmers are steady.
“We have many Mennonites moving into the area, as well
as those farming cash crops, beef and dairy,” he says. “We also
have many urbanites buying farm properties as weekend
getaways, and getting back to their roots with maybe a few
horses or just a mix. I do my best to find what they’re looking
for and where they want to live.”
March 3.
Approximately 150 exhibitors from across Ontario will be
on hand to present the latest in agricultural products to the
farming community. For visitors’ convenience, the show is
located all in one building. There will be a wide range of agribusinesses
aimed at the farming community, including farm
machinery, technology and equipment dealers, seed, fertilizer
Additional services aimed at the agricultural industry include
insurance and financial service companies.
“We get a good cross-section of agricultural companies,
non-profit and governmental organizations that farmers would
be dealing with regularly, all in the same building,” says Neil
Moore, Secretary/Treasurer of the East Central Ontario Soil
and Crop Improvement Association and show organizer.
“They will have a chance to implement the information before
the next season’s crops are in. They can also do some
comparison shopping on the supplies and services they
There will also be information
displays from a variety of governmental
organizations, such as the Ministry of
Agriculture, local agricultural economics
departments, and conservation
authorities. Farm organizations such as
the Cattlemen’s Association, Federation
of Agriculture, and the National
Farmers’ Union will also be there
Moore says that the show attracts
visitors in the agricultural field from
Belleville to Barrie. Approximately
2,500 people came last year and he
expects that many or more this year.
The show is organized by the East
Central Ontario Soil and Crop
Improvement Association, whose
members can attend the show free of
charge. The group has about 400
members from Peterborough and
Haliburton counties, the regions of
Durham and York, and the City of
Kawartha Lakes. The mandate of the
association is to communicate and
facilitate responsible, economic management
of soil, water, air and crops.
The umbrella Ontario group consists of
5,000 members who represent all
commodity groups from all major
agricultural areas. Regional associations
conduct demonstrations and trials
on-site on farms in conjunction with
their local associations to share
information and resources. Information
meetings feature guest speakers and
during the growing season, members
tour farms to observe plots demonstrating
the latest techniques. Members
receive a regular quarterly newsletter.
Kawartha lakes Agriculture
Is Growing Success!
By Kelly Maloney, Agriculture Development Officer, City of Kawartha Lakes
Resulting from a year long consultation with the
Kawartha Lakes agricultural industry (primary
producers, processors, suppliers, and retailers) an
Agricultural Action Plan has been charted to
guide the sector through the coming years. Included is a vision
of a vibrant, competitive industry that is recognized as
being a critical part of the community and economic fabric of
the City of Kawartha Lakes.
The agricultural community of farms and agri-businesses
in the City of Kawartha Lakes is a dynamic, economic, social
and environmental driver. Agriculture is an integral component
of the City; one that successfully optimizes resources and
people to achieve a community that is innovative, diverse, balanced,
sustainable and prosperous, and has the world as its market.
The Actions are laid out in a series of short and long term
initiatives, as well as continuing and ongoing supports provided
not only by all levels of governments but also the many local
associations and organizations serving the agriculture community.
Developing a Food Charter for Kawartha Lakes is one of
the short term initiatives that is well along in its implementation.
A Food Charter is a document that outlines values and beliefs
about the food system in a community. It can act as a guiding
document to assist in the development of local food related
policies and programs to develop food security and a just, sustainable
food system. The Kawartha Lakes Food Charter will
be presented for final input at Ops Community Centre,
Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 7:00 pm.
The Action Plan encourages activities to fill identified gaps
in the value chain, including looking at new crops, markets,
adding local processing capacity, and enhanced distribution
systems. Through continued support and enhancement of the
buy local food program, Kawartha Choice FarmFresh, consumption
of local products is promoted and opportunities for farmers
to connect directly with the local consumers are provided.
Direct linkages between food buyers, distributors, processors,
restaurants, retailers and producers will be facilitated at
the Kawartha Choice FarmFresh Local Food Summit and
Networking Event, Moving Beyond the Farm Gate: Developing
Local Food Systems, Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at the Victoria
Park Armoury in Lindsay. The Event will feature guest
speakers that will discuss value chain and market development
and give industry perspectives on reaching food buyers.
Through afternoon working group discussions participants
will address gaps in the local food systems.
Exploring Farming
New farmers are a vital human resource in this region
Farms at Work, a project which promotes healthy,
active farms in the East Central Ontario, is hosting
the Exploring Your New Farm Dream in Peterborough,
beginning February 2011. The “Explorer
Course”, developed by the New England Small Farm Institute
(NESFI) www.smallfarm.org, is aimed at those who are
thinking about starting a farm business. It guides participants
through an in-depth self-assessment process to identify the
specific aptitudes, interests, skills and resources needed to
farm successfully.
New farmers are a vital human resource in this region, as
the average age of farmers in central Ontario is 54 years, one
of the highest in the country. Large numbers of farmers will be
retiring over the next 15 years, and there are not enough young
farmers to replace them. At the same time, a growing number
of people of all ages and backgrounds are becoming interested
in agriculture – and especially in taking on the challenge of
maintaining Ontario’s ability to grow its own food.
Offered in the Kawarthas for the first time, the Explorer
course has been well received in other parts of the province.
Participants will work with an experienced facilitator, have the
opportunity to interview career farmers and connect with new
farmers in the region. Farms at Work is looking for about
15 enthusiastic individuals - of any age and background - for
this five-session program which is being held on February 12,
19, and March 5, 12, and 19. The cost of the program is
$300/person or $400/2 people from the same farm. For more
information go to www.farmstart.ca/explorer or contact
Monika Korzun: monika@farmstart.ca or call 519-836-7046
Kawartha Choice FarmFresh
The third annual Kawartha Choice “Speed Dating” event will take place at the Evinrude
Centre, where buyers and chefs meet with local farmers to establish relationships
For the fourth year, Kawartha Choice FarmFresh
(KCFF) showcased local food at the Royal Agricultural
Winter Fair with the theme of “Feel
Right at Home.” The display was part of the
Eastern Ontario Pavilion, which was made possible with
funding received through the Ontario Market Investment
Fund and the Peterborough Community Futures in partnership
with FedDev Ontario. KCFF showcased a cheerful
living room filled with photos of friends and neighbours
and a warm and inviting kitchen offering farm fresh
food samples all day long.
Promoting the Buy Local
initiative, culinary tourism and
creating awareness for local
economic development were
the goals of the exhibit,
according to Karen Jopling
Agriculture Development
Officer for the Greater
Peterborough Area Economic
Development Corporation
(GPA EDC).
“More than 300,000 people
attended the fair and there was
a lot of interest in our booth,
where we were giving away free
samples of Kawartha Choice
products,” she says. “We had a
variety of local foods, including
maple syrup, stuffed olives, Red Fife shortbread and other
baked goods and products from Mariposa Dairy who had a
booth beside us – people loved it. Our hope is to give the
attendees a taste of the Kawarthas which will encourage
them to visit or region and purchase our local products.”
KCFF was also represented on the fair’s main cooking
stage again this year, where local chefs and farmers
demonstrated the benefits of cooking with local
ingredients. Among those who enhanced the KCFF
presence were Chef Lorianne Cicchillo of Rubidge
Retirement Residence, Professor and Chef Michael
Sterpin and students from Fleming College, Chef Andy
Brooks from Olympia Restaurant, Staples Maple
Products, Aurora Farms, Barb’s Home Baking, Quaker
Oaks Farm, Stoddart Family Farm, Elmhirst Resort,
Linda Lawrence and Peterborough Eats.
that have been produced locally. Its aim is to support local
farmers by helping them sell directly to the customer, such
as restaurants, small retailers, and to end users at the farm
gate or at farmers’ markets. Members who are farmers, producers,
chefs, restaurants and retailers display the Kawartha
products have been grown locally.
Some events to make
note of are The Our Fields
Our Future Agricultural
workshops and a trade show
around the issues of good
After conducting extensive research, Co-operators
has developed its “Community Guard” insurance
package, which provides unique coverage especially
for non-profit organizations and charities.
“Our rates are very competitive, and because we realize that
many charities are on tight budget, we will not raise the rates
more than five percent in a year without giving 12 months
notice, to help with their budgetary planning,” says Shawn
LaPalm, agent. “Not-for-profits have specialized needs that
make them different from businesses. Our agents are specially
trained in voluntary sector insurance.”
Non-profit clients range from agricultural societies and
housing organizations to arts groups, basically any organization
where there are large numbers of volunteers.
“We make sure they have the right policy to fit their needs.
We can meet with the board and go over the different coverages
in order to provide a quote,” continues LaPalm. “If something
does goes wrong, we inform them of the steps they need
to follow.”
Their in-house claims department in Peterborough handles
claims quickly and fairly, as well as having an after-hours
emergency service available 24 hours a day, seven days a
week.
It’s important that non-profit organizations make sure their
assets are covered, says LaPalm. Whether they have two volunteers
or 200, organizations can experience devastation from
Crime Insurance:
No Business Is
Immune From Crime
Every year, Canadian companies lose
millions of dollars as a result of criminal
acts. No business is immune from losses Craig Smith
due to crime. Criminal acts are on the rise
and the perpetrators are getting more sophisticated. The
costs of these types of losses come right off a company’s
bottom line.
Crime related losses from robbery, hold up and employee
theft are not typically covered under most basic commercial
insurance policies. If you do have coverage, it may have
limitations. Crime coverage comes in different forms from loss
of money and securities inside and outside your premises, to
counterfeit money or money orders and depositor’s forgery.
In the case of losses that occur over time, you may also incur
additional expenses for auditing and professional fees to
prove the losses. It is essential that you understand if your
commercial insurance policy provides adequate coverage for
these criminal occurrences.
Proper insurance coverage should only be part of your
overall plan. Every business can be a victim of a criminal act.
You need to decide where your weaknesses are and how to
protect your business and its assets. Your choices can include
deciding to invest in a monitored alarm system, a security
camera system, or different kinds of front line protection
including bars, fences, metal doors or exterior lighting systems.
Whatever you decide to do, it is important for you to take steps
to ensure your business is not an easy target.
Talk to your insurance agent for suggestions and recommendations
on how to protect your business. Some of the steps
you take to protect your business can even earn you a discount
on your insurance premiums.
Get Financially Fit – For Life
Here we are again… a brand new year. Time
does seem to fly from year to year, and to
accelerate as we age. There is no better time
than now to pause to consider your financial
fitness. Are you overindulging in the present
at the expense of your financial future? Tom Weichel
Achieving financial fitness and balance
requires a plan, along with discipline and patience. But the
good news is that, like any new health regime, once in place it
becomes a lot easier to maintain. Resolve this year to get in
financial shape with these commitments.
I will get a handle on where my money is going.
Set aside time to account for your income and spending over
the past year. How much did you spend on your future? The
spreadsheet you set up with this exercise can be used to help
you track expenses each year. It’s also ideal as a starting point to
estimate the cost of your desired lifestyle in retirement.
I will write down my dreams and goals.
Documenting one’s goals and sharing them with others has
been proven to boost the chances of success. You only have one
shot at life. What is really important to you? How much will
it cost?
I will work with a professional to create an integrated plan.
For best results, you need a holistic approach that integrates
your goals, considers different scenarios and covers all aspects
of your financial life – credit, portfolio management, insurance,
tax and estate planning. As professionals with expertise in these
areas, we can help you establish a realistic plan, identify tax
efficiencies and provide the objectivity you need to stay on track.
I will automate my plan.
Your current income is vulnerable to immediate claims and
temptations. To ensure your dreams are funded as planned, we
recommend you arrange for automatic transfers from your
paycheque or chequing account to your RRSP, Tax-Free
Savings Accounts or other investment. Start small and aim to
increase the size of the transfers each year. Make this a lifelong
habit. Our team can show you why this is absolutely the surest
way to build wealth for your future.
Call us for an evaluation and integrated plan to help balance
your goals through all stages of life. Make this the year that you
get in financial shape – for good.
