As the new medical director of Rubidge Retirement Residence,
Dr. Susan Tainsh, who has specialized in the care of the elderly for
over 20 years, has a role that is not only diverse, but both interesting
and satisfying. She not only takes on the overall responsibility for
the residents’ medical care, but also checks to see that they are
made happy and comfortable in many different ways. It’s part of
being in the Rubidge family.
Although her main role is to advise on medical issues in the
residence, she also becomes the personal doctor for any residents
who don’t have a family doctor in Peterborough.
More generally, in keeping an eye out for the comfort and well
being of the residents, Dr. Tainsh ensures that the environment is
senior-friendly. Chairs and sofas in the common areas need to be
easy to get out of and lighting needs to be bright. She also ensures
that there is a plan in place in case a resident needs to recuperate
from an illness or injury in another facility. She also looks at the
activities offered to make sure they are appropriate.
“Meal times are very important socially and nutritionally,” she says.
“I discuss with the chef how to keep them interesting. As we get
older we all tend to have a sweeter tooth, and I might suggest
there be more choice of desserts, or possibly how to keep food
appealing if someone is on a low salt diet”.
One benefit of Rubidge Retirement Residence being a smaller
residence is that she and other staff can immediately notice even
minor changes in the residents’ health. This winter Dr. Tainsh will
be able to see patients in her new office space inside the residence
for those who don’t like to go out in the cold weather.
Rubidge Retirement Residence welcomes you to come in for a
Seniors Dreams
Making Seniors’ Dreams Come True
Seniors Dreams is a new, non-profit foundation established in
Peterborough in December, 2010 by Mark Twyman and partner
Sandy Baker. Similar to the Children’s Wish Foundation, the
organization is dedicated to making seniors’ dreams come true.
“In my work I’ve seen a lot of seniors who are
forgotten, perhaps they don’t have any
family living nearby, or their friends
have passed away. They have
worked hard all of their lives, and
deserve a treat that perhaps
they may have denied
themselves. It’s a way
of giving back to
them,” says
Twyman.
by Joanne Culley
A personal support worker for five years, Twyman works part
time in a nursing home, where he comes into daily contact
with seniors who could use more loving attention.
“We want to provide them with small dreams such as haircuts
or lunches, or a large dream such as flying a loved one in to
see them,” says Twyman. “My parents, who died five years ago,
are my inspiration for this foundation.”
The first “Seniors Dream” was fulfilled last August, with help
from the community. Betty Whatman, who lives in a local
seniors’ residence, always wanted a different hair style.
“For her makeover, we arranged for her to have a cut and colour
at O’HAIRA, a new outfit donated by Reitmans, and a brooch
donated by Fifth Avenue Collection Jewelry. Afterwards, she
had brunch at Dancing Blueberries. Her Dream Ride was in a
wheel chair van donated by Call-a-Cab.”
A fundraising dance is coming up at The Junction, 251 George
St. N. on Thursday, October 6 at 8 p.m. with a silent auction,
prizes and music by Tami J and the Wilde Boys. Tickets are
$10 each or two for $15 and can be purchased at the
door or by calling 705-748-0599.
“If someone knows of an elderly neighbour
who could use some special attention, they
could let us know, and we could help them
put together a dream,” says Twyman. “At
this time, we’re covering the Peterborough,
Kawarthas, and Northumberland areas, but
we can see in the future expanding across
Canada. Eventually, we hope to acquire a
Handi-Van.”
Voted Peterborough’s
Favourite Chiropractic
The main difference between wellness care and standard medical
care is that wellness care seeks to turn on the natural healing ability.
Wellness care does not add something to the system; instead
it removes anything that might interfere with normal function.
Wellness care trusts that the body would know what to do if nothing
were interfering with it. Standard medical care, on the other hand,
seeks to treat a symptom by adding something from the outside – a
medication, a surgery or procedure.
Wellness is a state of optimal conditions for normal function…
and then some. The wellness approach is to look for underlying
causes of any disturbance or disruption (which may or may not be
causing symptoms at the time) and make whatever interventions
and lifestyle adjustments would optimize the conditions for
normal function. That environment encourages natural healing,
and minimizes the need for invasive treatment, which should be
administered only when absolutely necessary. When the body is
working properly, it tends to heal effectively, no matter what the
condition.
Chiropractic is a proven health care practice that treats misaligned
vertebrae that cause nervous system signals to travel astray, and
the realignment can alleviate painful symptoms and turbo charge
the body’s ability to heal itself. Studies show Zoomers who receive
Chiropractic care report better overall health, fewer symptomatic
chronic conditions, less (sick) days in hospitals and other health
care facilities and more mobility than non-Chiropractic patients.
The study also showed 87% of Chiropractic patients described their
health status as good to excellent and were also less likely to use
prescription drugs and more likely to exercise regularly.
So isn’t it time you joined the Wellness Revolution
Global Angel Charitable
Organization Fundraiser
Global Angel Charitable Organization ( GACO) is making plans
for their fundraising evening with a Mardi Gras Theme Spa night
called “Beauty and the Beads” held at Kawartha Downs Speedway
on Friday November 4, 2011. The event is expected to attract more
than four hundred ladies who will be treated to mini spas, free
Through the generosity of communities and volunteer support
throughout the year and of our fundraising event s we are able
to assist many persons in need of desperate medical flights for
treatment , care and repatriation. An example of a current requests
is as follows :
A Canadian student from Quebec that has been injured in Libya is
one of our many requests for immediate assistance to repatriate for
urgent ongoing medical treatment. This young man’s injuries have
left him a paraplegic and in need of intensive medical treatment
and care in Canada. Many of our cases can travel safely with
medical personnel by airlines, however, others such as this student
requires a air ambulance flight due to the complexities and the
critical nature of his medical condition.
Westview Village
Offering the Best in Adult Lifestyle
Condominium Living
“People come here for the lifestyle,” says Russ Coens, Site Manager
at Westview Village. “They love that they can go out the door, have
the freedom to travel south for the winter, and when they return,
their home looks exactly the same as when they left it.”
Westview Village is an adult lifestyle community that offers
the best of condo living, where the grass is cut, flowerbeds
maintained, snow cleared, windows washed, and with
low maintenance fees. Located at 1 Village Crescent, off
of Lansdowne St. W., west of the Parkway, there are about
twenty eight homes left in the last phase of this 148 home
development.
“These garden bungalows a typical of the style you might find
in Florida,” continues Coens. “They come with basements, and
full EnergyStar certification that includes high R-value Roxul
insulation.”
The homes range in size from 1087 sq. ft. to 1446 sq. ft. and
are available as semi-detached, or in blocks of three, four or
five homes. Each one comes with a private garage, large deck
and privacy fence. Purchasers can customize their homes with
private driveways, one-and-a-half, or two car garages, lofts,
elevators, and other accessibility options. Each home has two
bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a main floor laundry, with
the opportunity to finish the lower level to include another
“Residents are enjoying the natural surroundings - we have
eight acres of walking trails, a pond with a fountain that is lit
up at night, a four-hole mini putt, and golf courses nearby,”
he says. “Just south of Westview is Harbour Park, a 14 acre
environmentally protected area with a freshwater creek and
lots of wildlife. We often see deer roaming through the area.”
The friendly residents have active social lives that include
garden groups, walking groups and golf clubs.
Those wishing to purchase a home have a variety of timelines
to consider.
“People tell us when they want to move in – we build non-stop
month or more move-in scenarios.”
Mapleridge
Recreation Centre
Celebrates 50 Years
&New Facility
This year marks two significant milestones for Mapleridge
Recreation Centre - the 50th anniversary of their founding and
the opening of their new facility at 1085 Brealey Dr., between
Sherbrooke and Lansdowne Streets.
“Mapleridge began in October, 1961 at our first location in
a house at 59 McDonnel St. and we’ve been providing fun
and recreation for seniors since then,” says Wilma Galloway,
fundraising chairperson.
Mapleridge is an activity club for seniors aged 50 plus years.
Operated by staff and volunteers, this non-profit charitable
organization offers physical, mental, and social activities which
promote health and well being to members. In honour of their
anniversary, the centre will be hosting a celebration on Friday,
September 23, with lunch from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., where they
by Joanne Culley
will be serving hotdogs and hamburgers for 50 cents, followed
by program demonstrations and performances from 2 p.m. to
4 p.m., then an evening dance at 7 p.m. with music by the L’ll
Big Band.
“We’re very excited that our membership has now grown to
close to 700, with 50 life time members,” continues Galloway.
“Since the opening of our new building, we’ve increased our
membership by about eighty new people. We’re happy to have
a permanent home where seniors can make new friends and
take part in a variety of activities.”
After five years of fundraising, the new building opened in
July. In addition to infrastructure money from the municipal,
provincial and federal governments, the centre raised a third
of the cost, $584,000, through building fundraisers and other
activities. Galloway says that the organization is in good
financial shape as they now have a small mortgage, as
opposed to paying a higher rent on the previous building.
who’s who in health
At 10,000 square feet, the new building is larger than their
previous location, with a spacious room with surrounding
windows for dances and other activities, as well as a main
floor kitchen and outdoor patio. Galloway says that they
will be now able to offer evening programs and workshops
such as stained glass, hoops and line dancing for younger
seniors who are perhaps still working.
The centre offers weekly classes in bocci ball, bingo, line
dancing, clogging, Tai Chi, yoga, shuffleboard, darts, carpet
bowling, exercise, choir, band and more. Cards are always
popular, and include bridge, euchre, bid euchre, and cribbage,
with board games such as scrabble, and a new game called
“The Ponies”. Craft classes include Bunka, which is Japanese
needlepoint, Swedish weaving, and stained glass. Computer
classes are offered throughout the year.
“We now have pool tables, which we’ve never had before,
and which are popular with the men, who also like to play
horseshoes and washer toss,” says Galloway. “A garden club
begins this month to discuss ideas for member’s gardens
with the hope it also sparks some interest in Mapleridge
gardens.”
Members can spend quiet time in the library, reading and
borrowing books, puzzles and videos, as well as using the
computers.
The centre offers meals on Wednesdays, and Thursdays,
from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Fridays at 4:30 p.m. at a
cost of $6 with food homemade by volunteers. On holidays
throughout the year, they offer special meals including their
well-attended Christmas Day dinner. Their annual Christmas
bazaar will be held on November 26 with crafts and a tea
room.
leading medical and healthcare professionals
Membership at the centre costs $20 per year and runs from
March 31 to April 1. A current membership card is required
to register for programs. For more information, please call
Westmount Pharmacy
Home of the highest number of Specialized Pharmacists in Ontario
Westmount Pharmacy is the home of the highest
number of specialized pharmacists in Ontario.
A very accomplished family, Murad Younis and his wife
Maha Hassan-Younis have owned Westmount Pharmacy in
Peterborough since 1997. Murad and Maha together with
their daughter pharmacist Marwah Younis, and two sons Mo
Younis, and Ahmed Younis, operate Westmount Pharmacy and
Seamless Care Drug Therapy in Peterborough and Whitby.
Murad received his Bachelor of Pharmacy from the
University of Alexandria in Egypt in 1978, and Doctor of
Pharmacy from the University of Washington in 2002. He is
the only pharmacist in Canada, and in the world, who has
earned all four pharmacy specialities from the American
Board of Pharmacy Specialities. He has the highest
designation of pharmacy speciality in Pharmacotherapy,
Psychiatric Pharmacy, Nutrition Support Pharmacy and
Oncology Pharmacy.
Maha is a Certified Geriatric Pharmacist who spends most
of her career and her time with her patients to ensure that
their medications are the safest and most effective possible.
In addition, she is a Certified Diabetes Educator. She
makes her experience with the most updated guidelines
in diabetes available to her patients in Peterborough to
empower them to manage their chronic disease and have
a healthy lifestyle.
Daughter Marwah is also a Certified Geriatric Pharmacist,
a Certified Respiratory Educator and a Certified Diabetes
Educator. Marwah adds to the mix her unique and valuable
experience to empower her patients to manage their
asthma and COPD in Peterborough and Whitby.
Westmount Pharmacy, with its community accessibility
and valuable experience, makes it an excellent site as the
Peterborough satellite outreach pharmacy for the Canadian
Diabetes Association.
Mo Younis is the manager of Seamless Care Pharmacy
in Whitby and is the community liaison to promote the
pharmacy as a professional health care member in the
community of Durham.
Ahmed Younis earned a degree in engineering and
computer science from Ottawa University and was able to
take all of the operations to the highest level of technology
to facilitate the mission of Westmount pharmacists to
provide the best pharmacy services to their clients.
Mona, the second daughter, is still in University of
Toronto studying pharmacy. Mona works every summer in
Westmount Pharmacy as an assistant and she works hard
to prepare herself to graduate in three years and join the
family business in the field of pharmacy.
Westmount Pharmacy offers a blister pack service
for patients, especially seniors, who take a variety of
medications at different times. This service runs through an
automated, robotic system to ensure maximum accuracy
and allow staff to devote most of their time to help their
clients on a daily basis.
This year, Westmount Pharmacy is expanding their space by
taking over the entire building at 1293 Clonsilla Ave. There
is a larger pharmacy section as well as professional, private
consulting areas and waiting area for patients. A section
of the new space includes a convenience store, where
essentials such as milk, bread and coffee are sold. A Canada
Post outlet and lottery depot are part of this area as well,
which opens at the end of September, 2011.
Patient-centered chronic disease management is the
Younis family’s passion. Together and with the help of
their knowledge, experience and skills through their
highest level of certifications, they harmoniously serve
the community and ensure that the best, most updated
guidelines are what they implement on a daily basis.
Westmount Pharmacy has a tranquil atmosphere, with
classical music and comfortable chairs to sit in while
waiting for a prescription. But there isn’t usually much of a
wait, as customers are served promptly.
“We enjoy bringing the latest guidelines and best practices
to our local community and seeing the patients benefit. All
of our family have the same goal - to go that extra mile
for our patients,” says Murad. “And with our knowledge
of chronic diseases, we can help patients make the right
decisions regarding their medications, exercise and diet,
which in turn helps improve their quality of life.”
Celebrating their first anniversary
this fall, the Trent Community Sport &
Recreation Centre is continuing to spread
the word that their facilities are open to
the community.
“Many of our fitness programs are
designed especially for seniors,” says
Julianna Stonehouse, Fitness & Lifestyle
Coordinator. “The goal of our seniors’
classes is to help participants maintain
their overall health by improving mobility,
flexibility and balance. My motto is ‘use it
or lose it.’”
Classes this fall include group fitness and
strength for 50 plus, which is a weight
bearing session using one’s own body
weight to help delay the onset of arthritis
and improve flexibility and balance. The
low-impact cardio and combo Pilates/
yoga classes help to develop core body
strength and coordination. Their new
seniors’ yoga classes involve beginning and
intermediate poses, using adaptive props
such as blocks and straps when necessary.
Their aquafit classes are great for all ages.
The expanded therapy clinic offers on-site
physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and sports
health services.
“Our new ‘Zumba Gold’ class is a fun
cardio dance workout to Latin music,
designed especially for seniors,” continues
Stonehouse. “People have a really good
time in that class.”
The 76,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art centre
offers sports, fitness programs and
recreation for all ages and levels of ability.
Their facilities include a cardio loft, weight
room, pool, therapy pool, climbing wall,
indoor rowing/paddling tank, fitness
studios, gym with basketball, volleyball
and badminton courts, squash courts
and more. Free parking is available to
processes according to ISO 9001-2008
standards of quality assurance,” continues
Courneyea. “Our experience in medical travel
to 105 countries in the world enables us to
offer the peace of mind that our patients
need to know that all the details are worked
out.” She adds, “Global healthcare should
not be about individuals having to arrange
for medical procedures without anyone
overseeing and documenting the process. All
hospitals and doctors are not equal - people
need to have proper information to make
informed decisions.”
Popular treatments include joint replacements,
dental and fertility treatments, cosmetic and
bariatric surgeries. She notes that it is a viable
alternative for those who have been suffering
with pain resulting in lost time at work or for
those who want to enjoy their retirement pain
free.
A quality hip replacement with flights,
accommodations and physiotherapy can
cost $15, 000, an MRI can be booked and
performed in less than a week for $800, and
major dental work can be up to 75 percent less
than Canadian costs.
“We research the best countries for any
given procedure and give clients a choice of
where they would like to go,” she says. “Our
physicians work closely with clients, who have
access to doctors 24 hours a day. We only refer
to accredited facilities with which we have
established trusted partnerships, worldwide.”
Returning from a recent outing
taking residents to Shoppers Drug Mart
for seniors’ day, Gardens of Peterborough
bus driver Gary Rabjohn couldn’t resist
stopping by a lemonade stand he’d
noticed on the way over.
“I surprised the seniors on the way back
by treating them to some fresh, pink
lemonade,” says Rabjohn. “They just
loved it when the kids came on the bus
to personally serve them. Sometimes, I’ll
stop by the bakery or get them ice cream.
It’s as much fun for me as them – I get a
real kick out of it.”
A retired police officer, Rabjohn greatly
enhances the lives of residents at the
Gardens of Peterborough retirement
residences - Canterbury Gardens,
Princess Gardens, Empress Gardens and
Royal Gardens. One of four bus drivers,
Rabjohn says that he’s “there to make
sure residents get to where they need
to go safely and have fun while they’re
doing it.”
The Gardens of Peterborough have two
air-conditioned buses that are wheelchair
accessible. They take residents to doctor’s
appointments and scheduled outings as
well as giving them the opportunity to go
where they would like to – whether it’s to
visit a friend, or pick something up at their
favourite store. Every Sunday, the buses
do scheduled runs to local churches.
Residents take seasonal trips to see the
fall colours and to visit the Big Apple
in Cobourg, as well as touring maple
sugar bushes in the spring. They go out
to performances at the Peterborough
Theatre Guild, Showplace, or as far afield
as the Capitol Theatre in Port Hope.
An avid theatre goer himself, Rabjohn
usually takes in the show also.
The Gardens of Peterborough’s four
residences offer a range of retirement
options, with 24-hour on-site nursing and
an emergency response system. They are
locally owned and operated and offer
trial and short-term stays.
“A patient is the most important
visitor on our premises. They are not
dependent on us. We are dependent on
them,” says Dr. Rita Kilislian, the owner of
Kawartha Endodontics. “More importantly,
a patient in pain needs us yesterday not
tomorrow.”
Five years ago, Dr. Rita Kilislian launched
Kawartha Endodontics upon realizing
a teenaged dental patient from
Peterborough could not afford to travel
to Kilislian’s Toronto office for treatment.
She explains, “I wanted to ensure that local
residents never again had to make a trip
to Toronto, so we acquired a license to
provide hospital-like sedation for nervous
and special needs patients requiring
specialized endodontics.”
Along with a genuine concern for
her patients, Dr. Kilislian brings to her
practice superlative qualifications. She
obtained a certificate in endodontics at
Tufts University in Boston, receiving the
American Association of Endodontists
Award and the Tufts Alumni Clinical
Proficiency Award. Dr. Kilisilian has served
as a clinical instructor in endodontics at
Tufts and as a lecturer at major dental
conferences. Reflecting her passion
for the art of endodontics, she has
built Peterborough’s dedicated-to-dental
continuing education facility in the Kawartha
Endodontics building at 425 Water Street,
which she purchased last April.
Kawartha Endodontics provides root
canal therapy, microendodontic surgery,
and various forms of sedation, both oral
and IV in a soothing, spa-like environment
using state-of-the-art dental technology
A 24-hour direct patient emergency line
ensures those with immediate needs
receive prompt treatment. And Dr.
Kilislian notes, “Within 60-90 days, we’ll
have a fully functional 3DCT Pan, likely to
become the standard of care in the future
of Endodontics and implant placement.
Right now, to our knowledge, this service
is only available in hospitals and some oral
radiology offices.” With this continuous
innovation, Kawartha Endodontics is
indeed set to raise the bar on its already
high level of patient care.
Extraordinary Wellness
Peter Greenlaw ~ Master Cleansing Coach, Speaker, and Author
It is our pleasure to interview Peter Greenlaw
International Speaker and author. Peter has
delivered over 1100 lectures all over the world to offer the
causes and most importantly the solutions to these problems.
So Peter “In, your new book Why Diets are Failing us and What
you can do about it you introduce a marvelous, new, safe and
effective way to deal with these challenges.
So Peter let me begin by first asking you, what are the main
causes of these challenges
Change your whole life in four days,
Yes it is possible.
Are you tired all the time
Stressed out
Not sleeping well
Have weight you just cannot lose
Imagine losing as much weight in
4 days as you can on a diet in a month.
Want to find out how
Photo ~ Peter Greenlaw
overweight with some severe health challenges.
My Doctor warned me that I might not be around very long
if I didn't do something drastic, so my doctor started me on
a vigorous exercise program, a typical low calorie diet, and
prescription medication.
Motivated by my health issues, I followed this program like
my life depending on it and at the end of two months I had
only lost 8 pounds. Unfortunately, my medical challenges had
not improved. I was really scared. This extreme approach my
doctor put me on was not working no matter how hard I tried.
After two more months of following this revolutionary
new approach, and with the help of my doctor, I was able
to drastically improve my health by loosing over 35 pounds
in the first month and becoming free of medication after
the second month. Those life changing results are what
started me on my path of research, interviewing scientists,
nutritionists and researchers. I was convinced me that this
revolutionary new approach could change the world, and
then I decided to write the book to share this with the world.
My research uncovered the fact that toxins are in the air,
water, and food and we cannot avoid them. Toxins are what
are making us tired, stressed out, sick, and most importantly
fat and unhealthy. These toxins are the main reasons why
diets are failing us. Here is just a brief overview of how
toxic is our world· In North America, we are dumping over
700,000 tons of pollution into the air and ground every single
day, 365 days a year from all around the globe.· Municipal
drinking water has been shown to contain many toxic
chemicals, supplements and prescription drug residues.·
· Food now contains over 10,000 chemicals used in its
production and only a tiny percentage of those chemicals
have ever been tested for what they do to us.· Almost every
resident of industrialized countries now carries within his
or her own body an average of seven hundred synthetic
chemicals absorbed from food, water and air.· Experts now
say if you eat a normal serving of fruits and vegetables daily
you will drink about one gallon of herbicides and pesticides
a year.Peter Are there effects from the toxins and chemicals
showing up in us
Peter “Our general health is deteriorating, we are getting
sicker and sicker at younger ages. Of three babies born in N.
America today 1 in 3 will develop diabetes in their lifetime.
In 1990, one in 15 women got breast cancer; this year it is
one in eight, and in ten years they predict it will be one in
three. Another problem is our children. In 1990, one in 10,000
children had autism, now it is one in 100. ADD and ADHD are
at epidemic numbers.
Is it any wonder that we are stressed out, lack energy, and
cannot sleep at night So many people now believe that
their best years are behind them. We are settling for these
'less than' life styles. Something is terribly wrong. Toxins are
becoming so prevalent in our everyday lives that they are
something we cannot ignore -they are making us sick, tired,
stressed out and overweight. Toxins are the main reason why
diets are failing us. And, here is the scientific proof to back
me up.These toxic chemicals have now been given a name
by Endocrinologists, (doctors specializing in hormones and
how they affect us), they call these chemicals, obesogens.
Obesogens are chemicals that disrupt the function of our
hormonal system, leading to weight gain and many of the
diseases that curse the North American populace. They
act in a variety of ways; mimicking human hormones such
as estrogen, blocking the action of other hormones such
as testosterone, and, in some cases altering the functions
of our genes and essentially re- programming us to gain
weight. What diet is going to deal with all of that None!
That is why traditional dieting is failing us in the long run.
Peter this seems awfully bleakDo not despair there are
really effective solutions! The good news is that tens of
thousands of people have experienced this revolutionary
new approach to health, wellness and weight loss.
A real solution that can change the rest of our lives and
these solutions are for everyone, not just those who want
to lose weight. Many individuals struggle with stress, energy
and vitality or have children that are having challenges with
concentration and motivation in school. This revolutionary
approach has shown dramatic improvements in many of
these challenges very quickly and safely.
Yes, people are losing as much weight in four days as they
are on a diet in a month. Feeling energized, less stressed
and sleeping better than they have in years. They are feeling
more youthful and full of life. They are no longer living a less
than life style.
How many of the readers would not want those possibilities
to live life to the fullest.
Peter well how can they find out more on the revolutionary
approach.
Fortunately you have an excellent resource locally. I invite
them to call locally 705-745-8346. And they can go to
www.extraordinarywellness.ca for more information as to
how this revolutionary approach may change their lives.
who’s who in health
Well that is a great question with a simple answer.
The Number one cause of these challenges is the Toxic World
that we live in. Period! And, here is why.
My interest in toxins in our food, water and air in the world we
live in, began eight years ago when I found myself 40 pounds
With that in mind I started looking for a better way, embarking
on a revolutionary new approach to weight loss and health.
The results of this revolutionary program shocked me, as I
lost as much weight in the first 48 hours as I had in the two
months prior of diet and exercise! I thought my scale had
broken. How was this possible
who’s who in health
in Lansdowne Place Mall
Kim Sargent began her practice
in 1997 and has recently created an
evolution to her work by coining her
approach and training others in relative
fields. The EHP Centre for Personal and
Professional Development is equipped
with a new generation of counsellors
known as Emotional Health Practitioners
(EHP). Sargent’s aim was to shift the focus
from traditional “talk therapy”, which can
be both time-consuming and expensive,
into something much more like taking a
course.
“When I graduated from school I
remember thinking, ‘Now what We just
talk about the past How will we know
when we’re done’ she says. “I wanted
something that was a lot faster and it
made sense to explain how the brain
works, how patterns are formed and how
to re-route them. If the client had the
information I had learned in school, they
could take hold of their own issues. And
they did.”
Sargent says that we are all addicted to
our emotions.
“There are no exceptions. If those
emotions are hope-filled, appreciative, and
prosperous, then we find our lives flow with
ease. Our bodies are healthy, and vibrant.
Our thoughts are clear and our decisions
are made swiftly and with an almost eerie
insight into ‘the path of least resistance’.”
She says that sadly, in many circumstances,
our emotional addictions are more
unpleasant.
“For those of us addicted to worry, despair,
regret, anger or worse-still, living life with
a guilt-chaser, these emotions steal energy
from the body, aging it prematurely and
leaving little zest. We tire easily, lack
enthusiasm, find our minds cluttered and
overwhelmed and we trade in that “flow”
for a life experience that mimics walking
through a carwash.”
At the Centre, the most common concerns
addressed are Anxiety and Depression,
Anger Management, Child and Adult
ADD/ADHD, Alcohol and Drug Addiction,
Concerns and Parenting Strategies.
Helping seniors to remain independent
and safe in their homes has been the goal at
Nightingale Nursing throughout their 25 plus
years in business. The company is known for
their outstanding nursing and home support
services and last fall they introduced a new
division – home maintenance services for
seniors.
“We decided there was a need for maintenance
services after we did a safety blitz on our
employees to find out what hazards they
were encountering on their visits to seniors
and found situations such as loose tiles, poor
lighting, blocked exits and slippery walkways,”
says Sally Harding, President.
The Nightingale property team will remove
snow from walkways and driveways, rake
leaves, cut grass, remove garbage, do weeding
and assist with basement or garage cleanouts.
Renovations include installing railings,
bathroom grab bars, raised bath seats, chair lifts,
garage door openers, new locks or dead bolts,
door knobs, light bulbs, light fixtures, window
plastic or building shelving, wheel chair ramps,
and enlarging door frames. Repairs can be
made to uneven steps, walkways, screens, decks,
and flooring to prevent trips and falls. They offer
an annual package that covers snow removal
and grass cutting, as well as a flex plan, with
units that can be exchanged for other services
such as home maintenance or home support
if the units are not all used up. “This way the
clients don’t over pay for a package when it is a
dry summer or warm winter when fewer plows
are required”, says Harding.
Nightingale has recently added client advocacy
to its roster. If seniors need a larger job done,
such as a new roof or landscaping, Nightingale’s
staff will help them get three quotes, compare
prices and assist them in selecting the best
contractor.
“This service was inspired after we saw a senior
being vastly overcharged for an outdoor
building project,” says Harding. “Most seniors
want to remain independent for as long as they
can and not always rely on their family for help.”
Nightingale Nursing provides nursing, home
support and foot care services to seniors,
disabled persons, and those recovering from
illness or surgery. In April 2010, the company
received its third national award for quality
service delivery. Affordable services include
housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry,
immunization, cancer/end of life care, and
transportation to local and out of town
appointments or events. All staff are bonded
and insured, with photo ID for the client’s safety.
and have extensive experience in
assessing and treating individuals with a
wide range of musculoskeletal conditions
– acute, sub-acute and chronic. They can
treat headaches, migraines, whiplash, low
back pain, neck pain, TMJ dysfunction and
more. They also engage in rehabilitation
treatment for Motor Vehicle Accidents
and WSIB claims.
Fitness Consultant Nancy Smyth operates
Synergystix Fitness. A certified personal
fitness trainer, she is accredited with the
Canadian Professional Training Network,
as well as the Ontario Society of Health
and Fitness. The facility has free weights
and exercise equipment, with programs
geared to the individual.
“Our staff of personal trainers and
assistants design personalized programs
for our clients,” says Nancy. “Each person
has different issues, whether it’s related
to their lifestyle, a sports injury, a post
rehabilitative need, or a problem resulting
from cumulative activity over time. We
monitor clients through their workouts.”
Trainers work at the facility, or can travel
out to the client’s home or workplace.
SKiN Laser Clinic opened its doors
in 2008. It was the natural extension to
Dr. Melinda Gooderham’s SKiN Centre for
Dermatology. Being the only Dermatologist
in the Kawarthas, Dr. Gooderham found
herself being inundated with requests for
cosmetic procedures and unable to meet the
demands of her clients and the market.
Her vision was clear. She met Janice Towse,
with 12 years in the cosmetic medicine
industry and together they created this
new anti-aging clinic…they agreed
certain standards must be met. The clinic
would offer state-of-the-art treatments
starting with proven laser technology.
ProFractional laser resurfacing, Intense
Pulse Light Photorejuvenation, Laser
Skin Tightening and vein removal would
be delivered by very skilled and highly
For the vast array of injectables only health
For over 20 years, Dr. Judith Buys
and Associates has been dedicated to
providing professional care of the highest
quality using exciting, progressive
technology and stimulating design. Dr.
Buys, Dr. Koren Bennetts and Dr. Verona
Sulja work together with their team
of dental hygienists and assistants to
provide a comfortable experience for the
whole family.
Dr. Judith Buys and Associates love to
treat children and their families to ensure
that they have a pleasant experience.
“We see children starting from under age
one. Some are quite anxious and come in
clinging to their parents, but with games
and a gentle approach, they leave happy,”
she says. “We have a feeling of satisfaction
knowing that we have helped to create a
child who will grow up to be an adult who
is not afraid of going to the dentist and
who will take dental care in their stride.”
Dr. Buys has hospital privileges at the
Peterborough Regional Health Centre,
where she treats patients with special
needs, very young children, and those
with behavioural issues, under general
anaesthesia. When work is completed in
hospital, the general anaesthetic fee is
covered under OHIP. This helps families
save money while also providing them
with the safest method of treatment for
their children.
Over the last ten years, Dr. Buys has
developed the dental aesthetics aspect
of the practice, where she does implants,
crowns, veneers, bleaching and a variety
of other treatments to create new
smiles. She works in conjunction with
local orthodontists, periodontists and
other dental specialists creating a team
approach to smile design.
“With adult cosmetic dentistry, the
reward comes at the end of treatment
when we see the tears of happiness in
our patients, who come in with crooked
or discoloured teeth and leave with a
beautiful, healthy smile.” she says. “A
smile can light up a room, open doors
and give you an increased feeling of self
confidence.”
FINANCIAL/ESTATE PLANNING
Could You Outlive Your
Retirement Assets
For anyone nearing or already in retirement, two of the greatest
risks today are longevity and inflation risk. Many investors are
hesitant to invest in equities after the recent financial crisis,
especially with the fear mongering and hyped-up media play
over potential debt issues in the U.S. and Europe. Yet that is
exactly what they need to do to ensure they don’t outlive their
retirement portfolio.
With 10-year Canada bonds currently yielding 2.3% (even less
for U.S. bonds), 5-year GICs paying 2.0% and inflation (in
Ontario) currently running at 3.0%*, investors are facing a
conundrum: Should they lock in their capital at guaranteed low
returns or take a deep breath and invest in the market
Before we provide guidance, let’s take a closer look at the two
risks.
retirement lifestyle: Investors need to preserve their spending
dollars by earning more than the rate of inflation.
The solution Equity investments are critical to achieving the
growth you need to stay ahead of inflation and protect your
buying power over longer retirements. Fortunately, with a
professionally diversified mix of equities, fixed income and
other investments in a portfolio, retirees can earn stronger
returns with lower volatility from year to year. Our team can
show you how.
Call our office for an appointment to learn how to inflationproof
your income and help ensure you don’t outlive your
retirement assets.
* Figures as of August 23, 2011
Longevity - People are living longer and retiring earlier. As a
result, today’s retirees need their savings to fund longer
retirements. Seniors turning age 65 in 2006 could expect to live
nearly 20 additional years, according to Statistics Canada, at a
time when retirement age has fallen to 62 on average.
Inflation - The other perpetual issue is inflation.
Consider this:
2% (GIC return)
- 3% (current inflation rate)
= -1% real return
What this equation shows is that anyone investing in
GICs today are actually losing 1% in the purchasing
power of their capital each year. Getting your
money back is not enough to maintain your
ZEST MASSAGE
Movement Powerhouse –
The Muscles of the Thigh
The thigh is organized into four
quadrants – lateral (outside), anterior
(front), medial (inside) and posterior
(back).
The lateral quadrant is formed by a
band of connective tissue (fascia) called
the iliotibial tract; it connects to the
pelvis, hip and just below the knee. This
thick fascia does not contract like
muscle, but is crucial for stabilizing the
knee when we are standing, walking and running. Control of this
band during movement is by an anterior thigh muscle and in the
back by the large buttock muscle (gluteus maximus). They work
together to move it forward and backward.
The main group in the front is the quadriceps (Latin - four heads).
They are primarily responsible for extending (straightening) the
knee. All surround the knee cap (patella) and insert on the tibia
(lower leg) just below the knee. Two other large hip flexors control
sitting and squatting movements. The Sartorius (tailor muscle)
allows us to cross our ankle at the knee, so we can sew or crochet.
The hamstrings make up the posterior thigh. Their job is to extend
or move back the thigh and flex (bend) the knee. These three
muscles are typically about half as strong as the quadriceps. The
name comes from hanging up hams (pig thighs) from the tendons
at the back of the knee. In ancient times to hamstring an enemy
you would cut the tendons at the back of the knee, so they could
not run.
The action of the medial group is to adduct the thigh (e.g. the
action of holding oneself on a horse). The largest of this group
(adductor magnus) also assists the hamstrings with extending
the leg.
When one of the groups is the prime mover each of the other two
groups will act as synergists, to counter-balance, stabilize and
assist with controlled movement. So if you are moving to a
standing position from a chair, the prime movers are the
quadriceps; the adductors and the hamstrings will act as synergists
so that the movement is coordinated. In fact, a great number of
muscles of the body will co-operate as prime movers and
synergists in one symphony of movement.
On a recent westward transatlantic crossing on the
Cunard Queen Mary 2 from Southampton to New York,
my wife Carol and I met a lovely couple from Harwich,
England, whose names are Tony and (Princess Patricia as
time leisurely touring the States before returning home
on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship that was repositioning
from Miami to Harwich. They had done this once before
and loved it so much that they chose to do it again.
Remarkable, isn’t it The ability to travel in luxury,
comfortably, and leisurely from one part of the world to
another is one of the unique benefits of a cruise vacation.
The cruise industry is growing in leaps and bounds. In
fact, it’s the fastest growing segment of the leisure travel
industry. And the reason is simple. Cruise ships can take
you to exotic places, where you can lie on sandy beaches
or enjoy a rum punch in the shade of a palm tree. They
can take you to historic cities, such as Ancient Rome, or
St. Petersburg Russia where you can visit the Catherine
Palace and the onion-domed Church of Our Savior on
the Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg Russia. Some ships
can even take you around the world on a 100+ day World
Cruise, with ports of call in 32 countries. Now that’s a
cruise vacation!
Regardless of the destination, cruise lines provide
