WELCOME TO BENCHMARK
A Certified Financial
Planner, Laura Boden
Helps Clients Create
and Preserve Wealth
When Laura Boden tells a client she will take care of
something, they believe her. “It’s my job to anticipate and
know what a client needs and what their expectations are,
even if they don’t,” Laura says. A Certified Financial
Planner for more than 15 years and a member of Advocis,
Laura’s expertise ranges from large corporations,
independent business owners to the family market.
“Every client has individual needs. We work closely with
people to help them achieve their financial goals –
whether its succession planning or saving tax dollars.”
Taking a long-term approach to financial and investment
planning is key. “We work as a team to provide
value-added service to our clients and to establish a lifetime
relationship with them,” Laura explains. Paul
Humphrys is a Financial Planning Assistant and Mollye
Lee and Wendy Humphrys are Sales Associates. “Our
combined goal is to help our clients create and preserve
wealth through the products and services we provide
which range from Retirement Planning and Risk
Management to Estate Planning.”
Small Business Solutions range from Salary Continuation
Plans, Individual Pension Plans, Deferred Profit Sharing
and Group RRSP’s to Group Health & Dental Insurance.
“We work with a number of small business owners who
also require our expertise in succession planning,” Laura
explains. “It’s important to realize if something happens to
you, your business will continue to thrive. We help clients
achieve these goals by using various solutions such as
Key Person Insurance and Buy/Sell Agreement Funding.”
Laura believes it’s vital for people to take an active
role in their financial well-being, particularly women.
“Life-changing events occur all of the time and we’re not
always prepared for what they might bring,” she says. “A
financial planner can offer guidance and support now
and for your retirement.”
REACH FOR THE TOP
Like millions of Canadians, I grew up watching this popular
CBC-based television program that put students through
their academic paces in an attempt to single out the brightest
and the best.
My brothers and I were glued to the set as we tried to
outsmart the kids competing on the panel, and one another.
My mother okayed the yelling and the shouting that accompanied
our viewing. She said it arose from healthy, sibling
competition. It’s fitting Canadian viewers tuned in and
watched this show faithfully for more than 25 years.
Striving to be the best is not an uncommon goal, but for
many of us achieving success is not something that takes
place over the course of an hour; it’s a life-long process.
In this inaugural issue of Benchmark, you’ll read about
local companies who dedicate their time and talent to being
the best in their field. Companies who have set the bar of
excellence a notch higher. Organizations who are willing to
serve rather than to be served and who have shown outstanding
practices and have continually improved, even in today’s
highly competitive environment.
We hope you enjoy reading about the wide-range of
businesses in this issue – from restaurants to retirement
communities – who have proudly chosen Peterborough and
its surrounding areas, the best place for business, home and
community.
Murad Younis,
Doctor of Pharmacy,
Westmount Pharmacy
Earns Highest American
Recognition For
Outstanding Achievement
Murad Younis, PharmD recently (December 2006)
earned the designation of Board Certified Nutrition
Support Pharmacist (BCNSP) from the Board of
Pharmaceutical Specialties (BPS). This is pharmacy's
highest credential in the practice of nutrition support
pharmacy. Through board certification, nutrition support
pharmacy specialists demonstrate a defined level of education
and training, as well as mastery of the knowledge
and skills necessary to meet the public's demand for
expert pharmaceutical care. This new credential is in
addition to Dr. Younis’ earlier BPS certifications in the
Pharmacotherapy and Psychiatric Pharmacy specialties.
He is the only Canadian pharmacist, and one of only
three pharmacists worldwide, to hold three specialty
certifications.
BPS specialty certification has gained considerable
respect and visibility in the United States, where it
originated, as well as in several other countries, including
Canada. It is widely recognized as the highest level, most
rigorous certification offered to pharmacists in clinical
practice. We have found that other health professionals
as well as employers value the level of professional
knowledge and skill that it represents in bringing optimal
health services to patients.
I hope that you can join me in offering our congratulations
to Dr. Murad Younis for his accomplishment.
St. Joseph’s Care Foundation
Dedicated to Improving Quality of Life
The St. Joseph’s Care Foundation is dedicated to
life-long healthy aging by supporting projects that
encourage all of us to make healthy choices and
maintain healthy lives, no matter what our age,
from birth throughout our lifetime.
Originally associated with St. Joseph’s Hospital,
the Foundation has continued with a healthy aging
mandate since the hospital closed several years
ago. A portion of the annual budget is earmarked for
Community Partnerships initiatives, enhancing
quality of life and enriching the lives of everyone
in our community through the promotion of life-long
healthy aging projects. Local partnerships have
included projects with Community Living Peterborough,
the YMCA, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Hospice
Peterborough and the Peterborough County City
Health Unit. Organizations outside traditional health
care are encouraged to submit proposals.
“We want to raise the profile of the Foundation so
organizations and the community know we’re here
EYECARE
Dr. Paul Paoli and Associates
Dedicated to Patients’ Total Eye Health
“It is our obligation and our privilege to provide
the highest quality professional services in full-scope
eyecare” says Dr. Paoli. Dr. Paul Paoli, Dr. Trudy
Gibson and Dr. Ian Revill combine over 60 years
experience and maintain the highest standards of
technical skills. They are equipped with, for example,
the state of the art visual field analyzer, high
resolution full colour digital retinal imaging and
other advanced eyecare technology. “We offer
complete optometric services including eye health
and vision examinations, spectacle and contact lens
dispensing, co-management of laser eye surgery and
patient education and counselling.”
Dedicated to their patients’ total eye health, they
assess not just the eyes but the entire visual system.
The eyes may be the window to the soul but the
blood vessels of the retina are a window to the
cardiovascular system, and can show evidence of
hypertension, diabetes, or atherosclerosis among
others. Remarkably, seventy-five percent of brain
function is linked directly or indirectly to vision.
“When we find evidence of disease elsewhere in
the body expressed through the eyes” explains
Dr. Paoli, “we’ll get the family doctor and medical
specialists involved as necessary to ensure patients
receive comprehensive care.” For healthy eyes
“always wear the proper eye protection on the job and
at play, wear sunglasses outdoors, limit your intake
of animal fats, increase the dark green and bright
orange fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet and
don’t smoke!” recommends Dr. Paoli. It is important
to include regular eye examinations as part of your
health regimen. Vision threatening conditions like
glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration are
more successfully treated when discovered long
before symptoms arise.
Comprehensive care includes a sophisticated
dispensary featuring the finest frames from the
world’s leading designers like Giorgio Armani,
GUCCI, Hugo Boss, Nike and Max Mara among
others. The optometrists recommend lenses featuring
the latest advances in optical technology from world
leaders Nikon, Essilor, and Zeiss. These lenses are
finished with the best anti-scratch and antireflection
coatings available, bar none. This commitment to
quality is backed by their exclusive “Happy Patient”
guarantee: Any frame or lens requiring repair or
replacement within two years of purchase will be
happily looked after for you, no charge and hassle
free. Prescriptions are welcome from any eye doctor
and the optical manager Kim Belfry will see to it
you receive exceptional service when making your
eyewear selections.
Distinguished by the quality of their products,
the refined attractiveness of the office and the
commitment of the caring doctors and dedicated
staff, Dr. Paoli, Dr. Gibson and Dr. Revill have
successfully built a reputation as a top quality full
scope optometric practice which will grow well into
the future.
INTERIOR DESIGN
Lakeshore Designs Expands
Lakeshore Gardens Brings the Outdoors In
Lakeshore Designs has expanded its considerable
range of indoor services to address the design of outside
spaces. Homeowners are increasingly looking for
ways to “bring the outdoors in” and Lakeshore
Gardens is designed to meet that need.
Deborah Loman, Lakeshore Designs project coordinator,
notes that outdoor décor has always been
part of the company’s diverse business. This year they
have opened the lower level of their store on George
Street to create Lakeshore Gardens. There they have
collected garden furnishings of resin, iron and wood
and lots of accessories, including planters.
Angela particularly notes an eco-friendly line of
garden furniture made from recycled milk jugs. The
Lakeshore Chair is an outdoor deck chair similar to a
Muskoka Chair “but we have a whole new take on it.
It comes in the most spectacular colours and in several
styles and with accessories.”
“Our business is not only design, but home design
from the ground up.” And furniture lines have been
part of that, both indoor and outdoors. Finding separate
space for Lakeshore Gardens is a recognition of
the work Deborah and designer Angela Cunningham
have been doing for years.
They operate a retail store, with an upper floor dedicates
to fabrics and draperies. The space also serves
as a design studio, with samples of flooring, furnishings
and accessories.
Deborah and Angela know that Peterborough shoppers
are concerned about the environment. Deborah
says, “We are conscious of the Peterborough market.
We have furniture made from recycled furniture, ecofriendly
paints and flooring. That’s a big trend and we
have those products.”
They carry a furniture line made from reclaimed
timbers and have other products that are recycled,
renewed and reused. They have also found an energysaving
power bar for electronics and electrical appliances.
But Lakeshore Designs is not just a home accessories
store. Deborah and Angela work with architects
and builders to create special designs and follow
through with purchasing and placing furniture. They
deal directly with furniture manufacturers and they
have some exclusive lines and products. “It isn’t just
buying furniture,” Deborah says, “but knowing the
piece will work in the space.”
Along with its wide range of services, Lakeshore
Designs isn’t tied to a specific style. “You have to be
able to do a little bit of everything,” Deborah says,
“classic, modern or traditional. What we do ranges
from cottage casual right through to more traditional
fine furnishings. And we meet everybody’s budget,
whether it is buying a small area rug or building a new
home.”
Angela is an Interior Designer and ISP
(International Staging Professional). “We bring the
whole home together,” Angela notes. Lakeshore
Designs also looks after entertainment planning, for
holidays, boathouse parties, birthday parties, or other
special events. They organize the theme, invitations,
menu and everything.
We want customers to know that decorating is fun
and that we can make their decorating dreams come
true. Lakeshore Designs – A reflection of you.
ALTERNATIVE ENERGY
HOME FURNISHINGS
Help Protect the Environment and Our
Children’s Future with Eco Alternative Energy
David Fairs of Eco Alternative Energy knows “there is
an amazing amount of energy in the sun and it is free,
if we can harness it. With the excellent technologies
we have today, not only are you saving money but you
are helping the environment.”
David offers a wide variety of alternative energy
products through Eco Alternative Energy, which is
located on the Queensway. Eco Alternative Energy
designs, supplies, installs and services alternative
energy systems for cottage, home, commercial and
industrial applications including wind, solar photovoltaic
(off grid and grid-tied), solar thermal water
and solar thermal air systems.
The company will also handle all applications for
Standard Offer Program, Net Metering Grid-Tied
Systems, Government Refunds, and electrical inspections.
Eco Alternative Energy has developed complete
solar systems, ready to be installed in a cottage, home
or business.
A wind turbine harnesses kinetic energy from wind
and converts it to electricity through the rotation of
blades connected to a generator. Eco Alternative Energy
carries wind generators up to 10,000 watts. The company
provides a solar-wind hybrid to power homes
that are off-grid and grid-connected systems, as well
as custom designs.
The company also carries solar thermal water systems
for domestic and pool heating; solar thermal air
systems for individual rooms; solar water pumps and
submersible water pumps; propane appliances; composting
toilets; water heaters and lighting products.
Alternative energy sources not only safeguard the
environment, they generate financial savings. Solar
hot water systems, for example, bring a 10-15 per cent
return on investment, David notes.
Investing in alternative energy is an investment in
safeguarding our environment and protecting our children’s
future.
Leon’s Peterborough: Committed to Quality,
Service and Community Building
When Tom Reburn tells you he is committed to supporting
the manufacturers, farmers and serviceindustry
personnel working in his community, he
means it. “I rarely go outside of Peterborough and
the surrounding area to buy goods,” the owner and
operator of Leon’s Furniture explains. “In fact, Betsy
and I were living in Campbellville when we first
bought the Leon’s store. We were having a tough
time selling the house so rather than living in one
community and working in another, I moved into the
store in Peterborough. I set up a bedroom in the
downstairs and I installed a shower. I would work all day
upstairs in the store, and at night I’d go downstairs to sleep.”
That was more than 20 years ago. Tom has
progressed from living in the 40,000 sq ft facility
that services customers from as far away as Bancroft
to Trenton to Whitby as well as the people who live
and work right here in the community of
Peterborough. “Today, Betsy and I live on Stoney
Lake, right across from Wildfire Golf Course,”
Tom says. “I’ve been in this business for over
40 years and the best part about this industry hasn’t
changed. It’s the combination of providing customers
with the best quality products at the best price with
the best service.”
And when it comes to supporting the local
community and the not-for-profit organizations that
help to make it thrive, Tom and Betsy are front-line
volunteers and donors for PRHC’s By Your Side
Campaign, The Special Olympics, Camp Kawartha,
the Dragon Boat Festival which raises money for
breast cancer research, the Osteoporosis Society of
Canada, Rotary and most recently, the Lakefield
Clinic. “My son Tom is working at the store and
learning the business,” Tom explains. “It allows Betsy
and I to pursue our passion for giving back to this
community we are fortunate enough to call home.”
OUTDOOR FURNITURE
Rova Features Exclusive Brand Name,
High Quality Outdoor Furniture
There are lots of places in Peterborough to buy outdoor
furniture, and there is a lot of choice out there. But for
something really special, Rova’s now carries two exclusive
lines that, in the past, were only available to shoppers
in Toronto.
Annelies Valbracht, Rova’s co-owner along with
husband, Ron, is particularly impressed with the
Tropitone line, which is manufactured in Florida and
comes with a 15-year warranty! Tropitone has been
an innovator in the outdoor furniture field since 1954.
It produces casual indoor and outdoor patio furniture,
pool furniture, patio umbrellas and other shade solutions.
Styles range from gracious traditional looks in highlydetailed
cast aluminum to contemporary choices for
modern surrounds in the widest selection of styles,
finishes, colours and fabrics.
Tropitone innovations include acrylic tabletops, wider
aluminum extrusions for arm comfort and strength, the
first quick-drying, weather-resistant outdoor cushions,
double-wrapped vinyl straps, tube-in-tube construction,
all stainless hardware and fittings (other than the highly
detailed, hefty cast or extruded aluminum frames!) and
there are many more examples - including, of course,
being the first outdoor patio furniture manufacturer to
use powder coating to finish the frames. That occurred in
1969 about 10 years before any other manufacturer.
Rova’s also carries Actiwin products. The company
has resin wicker products, but its cast aluminum in classic
styles are particularly practical, Annelies notes, as
they can be left outside all year round. Even in Canada!
Rova’s also added the Meadowcraft line of wrought
iron furniture and Galtech umbrellas in many sizes and
with an autotilt feature. Annelies also makes mention of
Corriveau products, which are made in Canada. She particularly
carries their three-person swing sets which also
have a canopy. “They are a generous size to stretch out
in,” as are their single or double gliders.
Rova’s has been in the specialty outdoor business for
15 years, and Rova’s has been around for 26 years. With
a 4,000 square foot showroom on Chemong Road, Rova’s
carries a large variety of products, including The
Kawartha Chair, made of western red cedar.
“We offer you the ability to enjoy your outdoor
living space whether it be a patio, small balcony, sunroom
or any place in your yard or garden with quality furniture
to either sit back and relax or entertain your friends.
We also offer screen rooms attached or free- standing
gazebos, sun shelters, custom-made retractable awnings
and sun sails and a go-anywhere portable propane firepit
to enjoy the warmer summer nights.”
Every retractable awning is custom-made for each
customer and Rova’s has 130 “Sunbrella” fabrics to
choose from. Ron Valbracht will come to the home,
cottage or business to give a free estimate.
Annelies notes: “We have gotten a lot of feedback
from customers who have had one of our awnings
installed and they told us they saved money on air
conditioning. Also, many people think they have
situations that make it impossible to hang an awning.
Most times we can make it work.” Awnings can be
operated manually or with a remote.
If an awning cannot be made to work, “then we gladly
quote you on a pergola, free-standing, or attached to your
home!”
Everything in the showroom is in stock, and Rova’s
delivers anywhere!
CUSTOM HOME BUILDER
Kawartha Lakes Construction
Sets the Standard
20 Benchmark Spring 2008
Kawartha Lakes Construction
Peterborough And The Kawartha
Home Builders Association’s
2007 Home Builder of the Year
Award Winner
In naming the first Home Builder of the
Year at its annual awards ceremony last
fall, Paul Dietrich, president of the
Peterborough & The Kawartha Home
Builders Association, said the goal of the
award was to set the standard for the
industry.
He said the award, which is determined
based on the association’s survey of the
builder’s recent occupants, “ speaks not
only to construction quality and after-sales
service, but to the entire new home buying
experience from the first point of contact
with the home buyer right through closing
and into the occupancy stage.
The bar has now been set and we look
forward to a healthy annual competition
for these awards with home buyers being
the ultimate winners.”
Winner of the Home Builder of the Year
was Kawartha Lakes Construction.
Owner Scott Wootton said it was “certainly
an honour” to be the first recipient of
the award which he said was earned by his
team, not by a single individual.
What made him particularly proud, he
said, was the result of the survey of past
clients. “Obviously it is wonderful to
receive the acknowledgement and recognition
but what made me feel proud is that I
heard we had a very high level of return on
questionnaires. That’s an affirmation that
we are staying connected, following up
and delivering on peoples’ expectations.”
Through the questionnaires, “you are
really being judged by what past clients
say about you.”
At Kawartha Lakes Construction, “We
really have taken a strong stance on our
mission statement to supply exceptional
experiences for our clients, not just the
product, but the process of getting to a
product, from design to production and
warranty to servicing what we sell.”
“Kawartha Lakes Construction has
steadily grown since 1988 into a full service
Design Build firm, easily handling
more complex projects all under one roof.
Design Build gives a unique, streamlined
opportunity to efficiently design, while
maintaining a constant eye on the budget,
and then produce well researched, refined
projects on a fixed cost basis. This is very
comforting to our clients. We recognize
that many clients live very busy lives and
may not have the time or desire to sift
through, on their own, what can be a very
complex and time consuming process.
Communication is key in the process,
something we like to schedule into the
process from the intial designing to the
production. We publish a schedule at the
signing of the contract with the client so
they know what we are doing every day
and when we will finish. It keeps us on
track.”
As a certified R2000 builder, Scott says
building green has been part of the company’s
mandate for the past 15 years but is
delighted that the green trend has finally
arrived. “We recently bought a Blower
Door testkit so can now analysis air leakage
in houses, allowing us to find potential
problem areas and better air seal for energy
efficiency and comfort, especially in
renovations, a specialty field for the company.”
When Greg and Kay Anderson made a commitment to
MANUFACTURING
Kawartha Metals Is
“The Candy Store For Welders”
Tom Elliott may have started “the Candy Store for
Welders” 14 years ago in his garage, but today
Kawartha Metals is located on a seven-acre piece of
property with plenty of storage space and 30,000
square-feet of manufacturing space at 587 Harper
Road in Peterborough.
Kawartha Metals present location provides more
efficient storage of material, in turn making order processing
more cost effective. It is also central to
Peterborough and it offers plenty of room for future
growth. Kawartha Metals has 24 employees and 10
trucks to service their many customers throughout
central and eastern Ontario.
Kawartha Metals distributes hot rolled steels for
construction use, cold rolled steels for machine shop
and production lines, aluminum and stainless for
specialty projects, tool and alloy steels, brass, copper
and bronze, and carries machining plastics, sheet and
plate plastics. Products include angles, sheet, pipe,
beams, plate, channel, ERW tube, hex, re-bar,
threaded rod, hollow structure, expanded metal, grip
strut, abrasive plate and hydraulic tube.
Tom says, “We deliver metal cut to size for just in
time orders. We specialize in custom metal orders and
hard to find metal products.”
With a stock of more than 5,000 different grades
and sizes of metal and plastics, Kawartha Metals is a
one-stop metal shop. Kawartha Metals also offers customers
storage of surplus stock and stocking programs
to avoid tieing dollars up on material.
Kawartha Metals stocks a very large spectrum of
metal and plastic products hence “the Candy Store …”
designation, which applies not just to welders but to
fabricators, machinists, fitters, millwrights, farmers,
hobbyists, etc. No order is too large or small, and if
they do not have stock they can get material within
one or two days from the time of order. The catalogue
of stock runs over 140 pages.
Kawartha Metals has three CNC controlled cutto-size
band saws for production metal cutting,
running 12 hours a day. Being computerized, the
saws provide accuracy within 1/16 of an inch. With
state of the art Kasto and Hyd Mech Automatic cut
saws, the shop can cut up to 18” x 18”. Fully automated
and flexible, the Kasto can handle jobs from the
smallest batches to larger orders with equal efficiency.
The new CNC cold cut saw parts off thin pieces
with exceptional accuracy.
Kawartha Metals’ territory ranges from Ottawa to
Kingston to Mississauga to Huntsville; Tom notes,
“We are able to service a larger area more effectively
every year. With more than 600 customers we are
becoming more and more of a player in these thriving
market places and becoming more competitive at all
levels of business.”
Five years ago Kawartha Metals was certified
ISO 9001:2000 which “makes us a better company,”
Tom says. The designation puts Kawartha Metals
at the leading edge in the steel industry, particularly
in meeting traceability and reporting requirements.
In 1994, Tom Elliott, started this business in his
garage. Within a year, he required a larger space
and moved to a small building in Bailieboro, just
south of Peterborough. Several years later he found
it necessary to move again to a larger on Whittington
Drive in Peterborough and 24,000 square feet of
space. Now on Harper Road, Kawartha Metals has
a seven-acre property with storage and 30,000 square
feet of manufacturing space.
The company mission statement, Tom notes, is
“to provide quality products and service at competitive
prices through a team effort, working with all
of our business partners, customers, suppliers and
employees; creating a Win, Win environment.”
But, Tom says, it is also the “great staff that are key
to making this a successful company. Without the staff
we couldn’t make it happen.”
FUNERAL PLANNING
Kaye’s and Comstock Continued Tradition
as Dignity Memorial Providers
Although two of the city’s oldest businesses have
undergone a change of ownership recently, families
can be assured of the same continued service they
Both now have the same parent company – Service
became associated with the Vancouver company in
1993. SCI purchased Alderwood Group, which owned
Comstock, in 2006.
Both companies have a long history in
Peterborough. Kaye’s was founded in 1946 by Max
Kaye. Comstock’s is more than 150 years old.
Funeral Director Ron Kaye from Kaye Funeral
Home & Memorial Chapel says it is important to
understand that each of the two businesses now both
offer the same services although they operate independently.
Both are Dignity Memorial providers which offer
unique benefits and services, he says. For example,
Bereavement Travel Services for up to four family
members with best available travel options; National
Transferability should a person who has prearranged
funeral services moves more than 100 kilometres away.
Arrangements will be honoured by any Dignity Memorial
provider throughout North America. Dignity also offers
a Courtesy Phone Card with free long-distance service
to assist in informing family and friends of a death.
Carl Brown, co-manager and funeral director at
Comstock Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, says
“it is business as usual in two places, now. We have a
stronger network in the community.”
The Kaye family business was begun by George
Maxwell Kaye, who was originally from Redmond,
Oregon, at age 21 in 1946. He apprenticed with Eldon
McFadden in Cobourg and Norm Nisbett in
Peterborough. He worked at Belleghem and Comstock
Funeral Homes in Peterborough. Max had two sons,
Ken and Ron, both of whom are licensed funeral
directors and have been with Kaye’s since the 1960s.
Max Kaye died in 1997. Ken Kaye retired in 2006.
Comstock Funeral Home is one of the oldest businesses
in Peterborough. It was initially operated by
brothers Edwin and Thomas Poole as a furniture and
cabinetry business. Aaron Comstock was a cabinetmaker
who eventually became a partner and bought
the business in 1853. His three sons also joined the
business.
In 1941, Aaron Comstock’s grandson, Max, managed
the funeral home, taking over from his father,
John. The business took over its current location,
which had been a private home built in 1882, in 1949.
Max continued as funeral director until 1981 when
two long-time employees became owners. It is now
co-managed by Dean Gemmiti and Carl Brown.
Among the additional services available through
Dignity Memorial is an Everlasting Memorial, which
is part of every memorial plan. It permits families to
share remembrances today and preserve special memories
for generations to come. The Everlasting
Memorial includes online, print and DVD media and
is available online.
ART GALLERY
Challenge Your Visual Perceptions
and Expose Yourself to Art and Its
Possibilities at Christensen Fine Art
I’ve run the hill on Brock Street hundreds of times but
up until this moment I’ve never noticed the telephone
poles lining the street’s edge, or the wires that angle its
skyline. Standing in the gallery of Christensen Fine
Art staring at a painting simply titled, ‘Winter Day,
Brock St. Peterborough,’ I’m amazed to witness all of
the detail depicted in Peer Christensen’s work that,
over the years has escaped me during my morning ritual.
“It happens a lot,” Peer explains. “I believe that
part of an artist’s mandate is to engage the viewers and
challenge their visual perceptions in new ways.”
Painting subjects in their natural element is what
Peer Christensen enjoys most. A celebrated artist
whose body of work spans more than 24 years and
whose contributions to the art world are numerous,
including showings at three Toronto galleries, exhibits
at the Annual Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, and a
solo show, ‘The Industrial Landscape’ at the Art
Gallery of Peterborough, two of Peer’s paintings were
acquired by the AGP in 2007 as part of its permanent
collection.
Peer and his wife Lori recently combined two successful
ventures, Hunter West Gallery and Starving
Artist Frame Outlet to create one enterprise,
Christensen Fine Art, now located at 432 George
Street. “We felt it was time to consolidate all of Peer’s
expertise into one operation,” Lori explains. “Now we
have the gallery, restoration and framing aspects of the
business on the main floor and Peer’s studio is located
upstairs. This allows people to readily access Peer and
all of his know-how, whether they’ve got questions
about paintings or they’re seeking advice regarding
framing and restoration. It adds yet another dimension
to the type of service Christensen Fine Art provides
for its customers.”
Framing and restoration are integral aspects of the
Christensen’s business. More than 30 years ago, Peer
apprenticed at a shop in Victoria providing him with
the expertise required in running a successful gallery
business. “With Peer’s help and guidance, customers
can choose custom-made frames suitable for a wide
range of individual styles and budgets,” Lori says.
“We carry high-end exquisite, imported mouldings as
well as discontinued lines that we offer at discount
rates. It just depends on what you’re looking for.”
While the savings they’re able to pass on is another
added-value benefit to customers, it’s the expert
advice the Christensen’s offer in framing and restoration
that has become the hallmark of this specialized
business. “I work in conjunction with a conservator in
Toronto for all of the art restoration we provide,” Peer
explains. “People can come into the gallery and we’ll
offer them a free consultation. We also hold conservation
clinics during the Fall, and we encourage people
to come out to those as well.”
A showcase for on-going exhibits of contemporary
Canadian painters, the gallery at Christensen Fine Art
reflects an atmosphere that’s relaxed and unpretentious.
Providing this forum for people to experience
and enjoy the beauty of art is important to Peer and
Lori and the staff at Christensen Fine Art, who by no
coincidence are themselves talented artists and musicians.
“We encourage people to expose themselves to
art and all of its possibilities,” Peer says. “It’s why
we’re here.”
The Parkhill on Hunter
Exceptional Cuisine, Inspired Hospitality,
And Strong Bonds With Guests, Staff,
And The Community For 20 Years
As our ever-loyal customers know, The
Parkhill on Hunter enjoys a reputation for
delicious cuisine and relaxed elegance.
Nineteen years ago, Chef Conrad Croteau and
Marnie Welch opened the Parkhill Café with
a single goal: to produce the highest quality
food served with the highest standards. In
2000, the restaurant relocated to a historic
building on Hunter Street West, and we
became The Parkhill on Hunter. The owners
were then joined by Judith Thompson, a longtime
restaurateur, who shared their love of
exceptional food, their instinct for hospitality,
and a new vision for the restaurant’s future.
In 2006, Judith took over ownership of the
restaurant. Conrad and Marnie, as well as
several long-time employees, continue to be
integral parts of the operation. Conrad continues
to create all the famous Parkhill desserts,
and you can often find Marnie lending a hand
during a busy lunch or dinner. The dining
room has recently been renovated and refurbished,
and we have added a cozy, lobby style
bar with a hand-crafted, heated bar top. In this
warm and inviting atmosphere, Parkhill
favourites are made with the finest local
ingredients using French and Mediterranean
themes and an eclectic flare. Our servings are
both generous and beautifully presented, and
our wine list is continually being updated to
satisfy the most discerning tastes.
Judith’s many years with both Canadian
Pacific’s Waterfront Centre Hotel in
Vancouver and the Royal York Hotel in
Toronto have given her ample experience at
providing superb service. At The Parkhill on
Hunter, we are all faithful to the principles of
fine dining. We pay careful attention to each
guest’s individual needs, and our guests
assure us that our staff continues to surpass
their expectations.
The Parkhill on Hunter provides a unique
setting for intimate dinners with friends and
family, as well as for anniversaries, birthdays,
and wedding receptions. We are also wellequipped
to cater to our business clientele.
Our 30-seat private dining and meeting room
is an ideal location for business lunches and
dinners, corporate events, and for entertaining
visiting dignitaries. We are proud to say
that the Duke of York, HRH Prince Andrew,
was our guest in 2007. We also offer high-end
catering services in the venue of your choice,
and we can work with you to plan small and
large corporate functions or events.
The Parkhill on Hunter is open for
TRAVEL
FASHION
If you don’t have CAA Emergency
Travel & Medical Insurance… you’re not ready to travel.
Having proper travel insurance coverage when the need arises is
important to you and your family. CAA’s Emergency Travel & Medical
Insurance* provides extensive benefits to help protect you against the
high cost of an unforeseen medical emergency.
When you consider that Canadian Government Health Insurance
Plans severely limit the amount of coverage outside Canada… OHIP
only covers up to a maximum of $400 CAD per day… travelling
without proper insurance is taking a risk that could lead to a long-term
financial burden in the event of a medical emergency.
In the absence of travel insurance, the patient is held personally
responsible for paying the medical costs incurred. For this reason
travel insurance is an essential part of your travel arrangements …
avoid the unnecessary financial burden of an unexpected illness or
injury and protect the financial security of your family.
A real-life example for a 22 year old insured with a 7 day CAA
Emergency Travel & Medical Insurance policy involved in a serious
car accident in the U.S….
Medical and Hospital Expenses $880,000
OHIP paid $31,015
Without insurance, this
person would have owed $848,985
The decision to purchase CAA Emergency Travel & Medical Insurance
for a premium of less than $20.00 saved the insured $848,985!
Costs for common emergency room visits in the U.S., such as a
sprained ankle could cost $30,000 and an unexpected heart attack
$223,000 or even more.
You can see that travel insurance should be an essential part of your
travel arrangements … avoid the unnecessary financial burden of an
unexpected illness or injury and protect the financial security of you
and your family.
CAA Emergency Travel & Medical Insurance offers a wide array of plans to choose from. For complete
Forward Fashion For Real Life – Only Better
Mike Watt makes it a rule to never look back. “From
as early as I can remember my father told me if I wanted
to be successful at anything – I had to run my own
race. ‘Don’t worry what the competition is doing,’he told
me. Keep looking ahead and you’ll win every time.’”
It’s this kind of grit, combined with Watt’s ability to
inspire, capture and deliver ‘forward fashion’that speaks
to people of all ages and walks of life, that’s made him
a retail powerhouse in less than 10 years. “That and the
team of people I surround myself with. Most of my
staff has been with me from the beginning,” Watt says.
This includes Watt’s wife Shelby, the muse behind
SOS, the latest of stores to come on the heels of Watt’s
two other successful ventures, FLAVOUR and PLUSH
BOUTIQUE. “Shelby and I love what we do, and quite
frankly, I don’t think there’s anyone else who can keep
up with me and vice versa.”
Developing stores that feature an atmosphere
reflective of the trends in music, art and media, stepping
into any one of Watt’s stores can best be described as
an ‘experience’ rather than simply, shopping for clothes.
“Shelby and I travel all over the world to witness fashion
trends first-hand. At the same time we’re seeing what’s
hot in music and art in Europe and the US, which definitely
impacts what people are wearing.”
While all of Watt’s stores mirror popular culture for
a specific demographic, each store carries lines that speak
to the individual in all of us. “You can be a mother who
needs a pair of jeans that transition from day to night,
“Watt explains. “Or maybe you’re a 20-something student
who spends the majority of your time on the computer,
or listening to music. It doesn’t matter. We carry designs
that are made for real life. We just make it look better.”
RETIREMENT LIVING
At Sherbrooke Heights Retirement
Community One-on-One Personal
Treatment is Standard, not the Exception
If you want to visit friends or family living at
Sherbrooke Heights, one of Peterborough’s most
active retirement communities, you might have
to catch a bus. “Every Friday the residents head out
for some type of excursion,” explain managers and
husband and wife team, Lois and Spence Tucker.
“Each week it’s different. Bigley’s in Bobcaygeon
or Kawartha Slots. Today, they’ve gone for an
international lunch at The Mandarin in Whitby,”
Lois laughs.
Dedicated to providing an environment that
fosters and helps to encourage independent living,
Lois and Spence aren’t simply involved with the
residents at Sherbrooke Heights, they live with
them. “If someone needs you, day or night, we’re
here,” Lois explains. “That’s very important to
people. It provides a sense of security for the
residents as well as their friends and family.”
This type of commitment to providing residents
with the best care possible stems from Holiday
Retirement, the Oregon-based company and founder
of more than 300 retirement communities across
Canada and the US, like Sherbrooke Heights. The
company’s philosophy is grounded in offering
seniors an enriching and stimulating environment
where they can thrive and continue to live independently
guided by the personal “touch” retirement
communities such as Sherbrooke Heights, provide.
“We treat each and every resident with the respect
and dignity they deserve. In fact, our entire
community is built upon earning our residents'
trust every day,” Lois explains. “That’s why at meal
times you’ll see Spence and I serving the residents
coffee and tea. It offers us a chance to see our
residents one-on-one in a familial and relaxed
setting. And if they’ve got something they need
to express to us, they take that opportunity to
do so.”
More than 35 staff members work at Sherbrooke
Heights, and each and every one contributes to
the well-being of the residents, according to Spence
and Lois. That includes everyone from the chef
who spends her time creating home-cooked fare
that features fresh fruits and vegetables to pot
roast at Sunday dinner. “If someone has dietary
restrictions we meet their needs,” Lois explains. “It’s
important we provide food that’s healthy as well as
good-tasting.”
From fitness challenges to afternoon bridge
competitions, life at Sherbrooke Heights is always
active and vibrant. “There is always something
going on and we encourage the residents to participate
in activities,” Lois says. “But if they want to
be alone and have some quiet time we have a library,
a tv room and a chapel on site.”
Studio living, one bedroom and two bedroom
apartments are available on all three floors of
Sherbrooke Heights, where Gracious Retirement
Living is a reality.
CHIROPRACTIC
Achieving Optimum Health
is a Long-Term Goal at The Posture Clinic
There’s a huge poster in the window of The
Posture Clinic on Charlotte Street in downtown
Peterborough. The picture is of a degenerated
disc and the caption underneath reads: “I
thought it would go away.”
A chiropractor for more than 16 years, Dr. Ian
Horseman says he’s heard what has now become
a familiar expression, too many times to count.
“When people decide they want to not only be
well, but live their lives to the fullest, they come
to our clinic. The majority of our patients understand
that chiropractic care is an important element
in achieving and maintaining optimum
health.”
Like Gail and Bernie Jones. Long-time residents
of Peterborough, Gail and Bernie recently
made a commitment to living a healthier life.
“We decided to take our health into our own
hands and for us,the active approach that’s presented
at The Posture Clinic made sense to us,”
Bernie explains. “We wanted to get at the root
cause of our back problems, not just treat the
symptoms. We come to The Posture Clinic for
specific treatment and we also have a series of
exercises we have to perform as part of our daily
ritual, at home.”
Trained in the Pettibon Technique, Dr.
Horseman is a postural specialist who takes the
best of chiropractic, physical therapy, massage
therapy, vibration therapy and personal training
and customizes it to each individual’s needs,
based on a thorough, multi-faceted exam. “We
usually take specific postural x-rays which
become a template for the amount of correction
that each patient needs or desires.”
In Bernie and Gail’s case they both required
Spinal Decompression Therapy, a form of treatment
specific to The Posture Clinic. “Spinal
Decompression Therapy is designed to unload
the spinal disc. Any back or neck pain caused in
whole or in part by a damaged disc may be
helped by this type of therapy,” Dr. Horseman
explains. “It is a non-surgical, computerized and
comfortable spinal distraction (stretching) therapy.
It increases circulation into the spinal discs
and joints, thus helping to relieve the symptoms
that cause the pain.”
Specializing in Spinal Rejuvenation Therapy,
The Posture Clinic schedules patients for treatment
from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on
each individual’s needs. “Not every patient
requires Spinal Rejuvenation Therapy,” Dr.
Horseman explains. “But in the case of many of
our patients who are middle-aged and retired,
they often do.” The Posture Clinic can determine
if you are a candidate for spinal rejuvenation
therapy treatments with an initial examination.
As for Gail and Bernie, their dedication to
living a healthier life has lead them to eat a diet
that consists of fresh fruit and vegetables and
less processed foods and animal protein.
“Through our treatment at The Posture Clinic,
our commitment to our daily exercises and
healthier eating, we’ve become totally aware of
our bodies,” Bernie says. “And, we’ve never felt
better.”
The Posture Clinic is located at 342 Charlotte
Street, Peterborough (705)876-7349
