Hello everyone!
President's Message
I hope this issue of the MM finds you, your families and your
Morgans all well. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas
and happily welcomed in the New Year with your families and
beautiful Morgans.
News to report:
In Victoria, we have had the Melbourne Summer Royal Horse
Show in January. I have to say the MHAA ring would have
been the biggest attendance of Morgans I have ever seen! Great
job everyone, your horses were immaculately presented and
all worked beautiful, so well behaved and I was very proud to
watch you all and catch up with everyone. I am looking forward
to seeing all of your photos in the MM.
Website: The MHAA website has been updated with a wonderful
new ‘Classifieds’ section for people to advertise their For Sale
Morgans, so please go and check it out.
The ANMS is being held in WA this year in March, it will be
here before we know it. Preparations are in full swing, it’s going
to be a wonderful show. It looks like a great venue and I am very
excited for WA as this is their first ever ANMS.
MHAA Positions: There are still a few positions available for
NPO and SLOs in some States; we are really in need of some
people putting their hands up for these roles to ensure our State
members are kept up to date. For more information, please
contact our Secretary, Deb Dowden.
MHAA Horse Deals advertising group campaign: If anyone
is interested in being part of the monthly group advertisement
for Horse Deals, please contact our Secretary, we would love
for you to be involved. We need a minimum number to be able
to run this advert; it’s really important for the promotion of
the breed and for our members to try to support and keep this
campaign going as many people look at it and see our logo and
remember the breed.
I am looking forward to reading all of your stories. Take care
and happy riding with your Morgans.
you haven't yet paid your 2015 membership and this
From the Secretary's Desk
The ANMS in Perth is rapidly approaching. We hope that all
members can be a part of it by entering their horses in the Photo
Show if they cannot be there in person.
The AGM will be held on March 7th and election documents
have been sent to all members. Postal voting closes on February
21st so your vote needs to be posted to Returning Officer Judi
Anderson by then.
At the AGM we are moving to accept the new constitution that
we have been working on for the past eighteen months. I have
emailed copies out to all members but please contact me if
you would like me to resend a copy to you. The constitutional
change was brought about by a change of legislation in Victoria
which prevents us from making any changes to our constitution
without bringing it all into line with their new rules. So please
vote on this new constitution, in person at the AGM or via a
postal vote.
We have a number of vacant positions that we hope will be filled
at the AGM. No nominations were received for the following
positions:
• Treasurer
• National Promotions Officer
• Victorian State Liaison Officer
• WA State Liaison Officer
• Tasmanian State Liaison Officer
• Queensland State Liaison Officer
• NT State Liaison Officer
• SA State Liaison Officer
• Morgans For Pleasure Program Co-ordinator
• Youth Liaison Officer
• Show Secretary 2016
We would be delighted to hear from any person interested in
nominating for these positions. If you are interested in taking
on a role, you will need to arrange for somebody at the AGM
to nominate and second you. Please write me a note letting me
know that you have arranged somebody to do that and if you
are elected you will be happy to take on the position. If you
don’t know anybody who is going to the AGM, let me know
and I am sure I can help.
As the Wirraway and Woodbine Bracken awards have come
to an end, the MHAA is looking to develop new awards. We
would welcome input from members who would like to suggest
an award that will take us through the next 20 years. Please
contact me with your ideas.
Finally, please can all members ensure their email addresses are
up to date. My main form of contact is via email and if I don’t
have your correct email address you will not hear from me.
I hope to see you at the ANMS – but if not, please don’t forget
to send your postal vote!
Morgans for Pleasure
It seems like yesterday that it was still 2014! What happened
... or is it as I get older time marches forward more rapidly
Regardless, a new year is upon us and it’s not too late to submit
your annual hours, as I can amend my report to the Board for
the 2015 AGM. So have a look at your log sheets and you might
find it’s your lucky day.
One of our members did just that. Simone Dalton added up her
hours for 2014 and found she and Mt Tawonga Sirocco had
achieved 500 hours back in October! Congratulations! So very
soon Simone will be able to order her polar fleece vest from
the NPO and wear it with pride. They are also very warm and I
am sure Simone will enjoy hers in the cooler months as much
as I do mine.
This will be my last report to the MM as Co-ordinator for the
MFP program. After being in the role since its inception in 2007,
I thought it was timely to give another member the opportunity
to run the program. It’s been a great for me to be involved with
MHAA and I have enjoyed every minute of it! Thank you to all
the various Boards since 2007 for your support of this program.
But a special thanks to Judi Anderson, she is always there to
help in any way she can. And another special thanks to all the
participants – it’s been a way of having contact with our far
flung members.
Show Secretary's Report
The excitement is really starting to build now with just less than
five weeks to go until the first ANMS to be held in Western
Australia.
We are privileged that the first people to import a Morgan stallion
(Sumicaro Beau Geste) into Western Australia – Bill and Yda
Tomsett – have agreed to be our special guests for the show.
We have had many offers of sponsorship and prizes, with trade
stalls as well. Entries are coming in and we should have more
Morgans enter than originally expected.
Our judges are all in place and we are delighted that Linda Brooks
has agreed to judge our Pure Bred Morgans and Dressage.
If anyone would like a program, as a souvenir, please let me
know and we can post this to you. Cost is unknown at this stage
but you will be advised before committing to the purchase.
Don’t forget about the Photo Competition, if you are not attending
the Show. Our Pure and Part Bred Judges will be judging this
competition. Details enclosed with this MM.
Judge Profile: Linda Brooks
Linda has been involved with equestrian activities for over 40
years, competing over a wide range of disciplines, including
Western, Stock Horse, Dressage, Show Jumping, Trail Classes,
Showing and Eventing.
As a Stock Horse competitor, she won the National High Point
Horse Class for five years in a row. As well, her time has been
spent breaking in and training many horses and ponies, taking
them up to championship level at several Royal Agricultural
Shows and she has also competed in the elite riders’ Garryowen
competition. In return, she has worked as a judge at Royal Shows
and various Agricultural Society Shows. On ‘spare’ weekends
you may catch Linda judging the upper level riders at dressage
competitions.
Over the last 15 years Linda has been involved with Morgan
horses in Victoria, preparing various horses and riders for National
Morgan Shows in the eastern States and also presenting Morgan
horses at the Melbourne Royal Show, to take home many firsts
and championship sashes.
Currently Linda, apart from being a busy show ring and dressage
judge, is an NCAS 1 instructor and is involved in private tuition
and the schooling of young (and older) horses. She is also helping
her daughter with her own riding career. Linda is president of
the Yarra Glen Agricultural Society and also involved with the
Croydon Agriculture Society.
NPO Report
Lisa Wong, National Promotions Officer:
npo@morganhorse.com.au
Being National Promotions Officer has been a challenge. I never
fully appreciated before how much time and effort the people
who have gone before have spent on promoting Morgan Horses.
I have tried to catch up with members and we took a trip to SA
last year to the National Morgan Show. It was great to finally
put faces to names. Most importantly, we got to know Morgan
people and they got to know us a little better too. I encourage
anyone who can afford it to go to Perth for the Australian National
Morgan Show this year. It will be a great opportunity to meet
Morgan people and exchange ideas. If you find it hard to meet
people, then email the Show Secretary and ask for a job. It’s a
great way to meet people without stepping too far out of your
comfort zone.
There is still lots of merchandise available for purchase, especially
vests and shirts – check out the MHAA website. If you want
something brought to the ANMS, please contact me at npo@
Thank you to the people who participated in Equitana, both in
and out of the ring. Surely without volunteers such as yourself
there would be no promotion of our Morgans.
Valé Margaret Curtayne
Marg died on 10 December 2014 after a long illness.
Marg may not be well known to many MHAA members but
she had a big influence on the breed in Australia. In partnership
with Sue & Duncan Terry of Tredway Morgan Farm, they
imported UVM Katrina and her daughter Ragtime Arizona
from USA in 1996, and Tui’s Nimrod from NZ in 2001.
Marg
Curtayne
with the
last foal she
bred, Top
Mark
Marg also imported semen from Edelweiss Magic Man (who
was the sire of Ragtime Arizona). Unfortunately no live foals
resulted from that semen until Samaria Creek Ultimate Magic
(out of Haymeron Park Darlingprue) was born from the last of
the semen; he tragically died in a paddock accident when he
was only 2 months old. Nimrod sired 26 foals, with Katrina
and Arizona being the dams of 15 foals between them.
New South Wales
NEWS FROM STATE LIAISON OFFICERS
Firstly, a couple of upcoming shows for NSW: Gunning
Show will have led and ridden classes for Pure and
Part Morgans on Sunday, February 22. More details
at www.gunningshow.com.au. Goulburn Show will also
have led and ridden classes for Pure and Part Morgans on
Saturday, March 21. More details at www.goulburnshow.
com.au. These shows have been sponsored by MHAA
and we would love to have a large number of Morgans
participate on the days.
Great news from Leonore Waugh from Bundanoon and
her part Morgan gelding Orangoutang: “I am back in the
saddle after six months and having a ball. Below is a
photo of my second ride. The weekend after Christmas,
Fiona and I loaded the boys on the float and met at Angela
& Anna Moodie at Wingello for a lovely trail ride out
from their place into the pine forest. You may recognise
Sunny [Eagleview Sundown] on the left who is also a
Morgan and of course Tang and I on the right. Ride was
followed by a lunch of Xmas leftovers. A fabulous day
was had by all. We are looking forward to a great year of
riding; maybe even tackle the Wingello Endurance Ride,
which we missed out on last year.”
Larelle Benjamin &
Red Bluff d'Maestro
An update from Larrelle Benjamin and her pure Morgan
gelding, Red Bluff d’Maestro: “Maestro celebrated his
fourth birthday trail riding in Jervis Bay with friends. He
is happy to be anywhere in the pack and really enjoys an
adventure! We have a weekly trail ride with friends and
another day meeting up with friends and supporting each
other’s horsemanship in a riding arena. We have different
obstacles set up to challenge ourselves and become more
imaginative! Maestro is maturing so beautifully and
always keeps us amused with his curiosity and cheeky
attitude! His groundwork is progressing well also, our
liberty is now extending to jumping, allowing me to
touch him all over while laying down and playing fetch
with a dog toy. I am really excited about our next year
together.
I am still putting most of my attention into my Welsh
pony while Maestro continues growing. I will start doing
all future horsemanship clinics with Maestro, starting
next weekend with an Equine In Hand Therapy clinic.”
It is with pleasure I can say “welcome back” to the
Association to 13 year old Nina Hvejsel, we have missed
you. “After a couple of years away from Morgans, I have
been riding ponies which I recently grew far too tall for.
So we were looking for a larger horse, around 16 hh to
compete mostly in show jumping but a bit of dressage
and pony club. Mum happened to email Deborah Gorman
about a horse when mum said, ‘Shame you don’t have
11

Omar Rienzi’ and Deborah replied, ‘Actually we do’. So
we went to Collector to see him and have a ride on him.
Mum had always liked him for some reason but thought
that I was too young for him a couple of years ago. Our
friends Sandi Frolich and Bell Widdison liked him too
and Bell rode him at the 2013 Morgan Show. I was a
bit nervous at first and so was Rienzi but when we both
relaxed, I really liked riding him – John and Deborah
were most generous to offer him for a trial.
Rienzi is now at our house and gets lots of pats and treats
that come with the house-side paddock. I have ridden
him every day and have had a few lessons. I took him
to a holiday camp with our friends and he was great. We
did some sports like bending, barrels and flagging and
he loved it. In jumping, he was awesome, he didn’t do
anything naughty. On the last day I took him swimming
and he LOVED it. He kept splashing and getting everyone
wet and I couldn’t stop laughing. My show jumping
coach likes the qualities he has and can see potential. He
said that Rienzi is brave and willing and also that he has
a good jump.
Nina & Rienzi
flag racing
Although as a team we are not ready to go straight out
and compete, I still have loads of fun riding him in our
arena and jump paddock and training. We have formed a
strong bond and he is a typical people-friendly Morgan.
I am looking forward to the future with Rienzi and can’t
wait until we can take him to competitions – as you may
have guessed, he is no longer on trial – he is staying!
And even mum agrees (she was a bit horrified when my
SJ coach was pushing for a horse 16 hh), I don’t look tiny
on him – even though Rienzi now makes our ponies look
small and luckily he actually does fit in our little horse
truck!”
Above & below: Nina Hvejsel & Omar Rienzi
News from the Gready Family on the progress of India
and Red Bluff Country Rambler: “India and Red Bluff
Country Rambler have had a fantastic first year together!
After a few issues with water jump training early on, we
were thrilled when he went clear for a win at the Harden
Open ODE in the 80cm on a course he had never been
on previously. At the Pony Club State One Day Event
Championships it was a bit of an up and down day, they
were 1st after dressage, clear cross country but a shaded
pipe jump in the SJ bought them undone (along with
many others). After one stop, India chose to treat the
rest of the course as training, ending with lots of time
penalties which finished them in 10th place. At our Pony
Club Zone 21 Championships they were thrilled to gain
Champions in Dressage for 13-15 years, Show jumping
C grade (75 to 90cm) and even sporting champ for 13-15
years.
We travelled to Mirrabooka (near Moruya) recently for an
Eventing summer school where they had lessons in XC,
SJ and dressage. Unfortunately rain meant the protocol
day and ODE were cancelled so we made the best of it
training 90 and higher on XC. We are looking forward to seeing what
this year brings for this amazing horse.
See the photo in the Part Bred Foal Pictorial for the newest member
of our family: Just In Bliss (pending) who we call Miss Bliss. Her sire
is Justin Morning Glory and her dam is Wesswood Seduction and she
was born on 1st December 2014. We couldn’t believe our luck when
our beautiful mare Jordi gave birth to a stunning chestnut filly who
was the spitting image of her mum but with even more bling, four
long white socks! After a shaky start with a few dramas she is now a
super confident and inquisitive little miss with loads of personality.”
Christine Brown has been out and about with her pure Morgan
gelding, Omar Total Eclipse (Boaz): “Well another brilliant weekend
at the Parelli Campus in Wilton. I’m doing a series of weekend
clinics with Helen Topp dotted throughout the year under the title of
‘Advancing Horsemanship’. One thing I have learnt over the years is
that you deal with the horse that shows up. If I could clone myself I’d
have one me for domestic/family duties and one me to play with my
horse but that’s not reality, is it I haven’t played with or ridden Boaz
since well before Christmas so I had a flying kite on the end of the
45 foot rope when we finally got some room to move. Unfortunately
our current agistment property is under development and my play
space has vanished to make way for roads. It was therefore quite
understandable that Boaz would enjoy a good canter with lots of
bucking and pigrooting. I often get asked by onlookers ‘You actually
ride that horse’ Fortunately the head tossing and snorting dissipates
when under saddle.
and took the horses to the beach. I could not believe it
when Rambler went straight down onto the beach and
even went back in front for other horses to follow down,
he was not so sure about the waves though! Their coach
has decided they are ready to train Elementary/Medium
dressage and are now jumping 90cm SJ rounds and
We arrived Friday night which gave me time to set up
my bedroom in my float. I have it all organised now. Bed
down the middle, table for stove and cooking stuff at the
end, hooks hanging from my storage basket for all my
horse gear, clothes case under bed, food under table and
lanterns dotted appropriately and, of course, the hot water
bottle ready for sleepy time. I call it my 6-star bedroom
especially when I can view my horse in his pen and over
the paddock with lush grass, trees and dams. Not that I
got much sleep the first night with Boaz pacing up and
down on the fine gravel in the yard and playing football
with his feed bins. Finally I got up about 2am and gave
him a snack which quietened things down for a bit.
Saturday the ridden subject was mainly the use of the
Bowtie as a lead up to flying lead changes. We were in
the morning group which made for a relaxing afternoon
sitting under a tree to watch the afternoon group go
through their paces. Saturday night everyone joined in
for a BBQ. Got a bit more sleep that night too.
Sunday’s online session was comical with Boaz in full
blown attitude. Asking him to go around two cones in
a figure eight can’t be too hard, can it Mr B thought
so – man he was giving me the finger big time. Missing
the cones, knocking them over, jumping sky high, all the
antics he could think of. I love it when he is his usual
Mr Nice Guy but when he’s not is when I do my most
learning. This time I learned the importance of keeping
my feet still as he was thinking that he was driving me
when I stepped back and forth and was gaining brownie
points. Secondly I needed to be clear that he needed to go
around the cone. I needed to stay focussed and say ‘that
cone is important to me so it needs to be important to
you’. I love Pat’s saying of ‘I haven’t seen this take more
than two days’. Just have to out-persist them. Finally I
out-persisted and we quit on a good note.
The funny thing is that I could hardly get a trot out of him
under saddle although he did like jumping over the logs.
Sunday’s riding was using the logs to develop flying lead
changes.
Going back out to Wilton this weekend for Australia
Day. Horsey games and BBQ. Better give him a run for
his money on Saturday then! Oh, we do have fun!”
A quick update from Weemala Performance Horses:
“We were delivered a lovely surprise for Christmas when
Weemala Sapphire foaled down a chestnut filly at around
2am Christmas morning. She got off to a bit of a shaky
start, somehow managing to get through the fence into
the next paddock but we were able to guide her back to
the fence and she allowed us to lay her down and put her
back where she belonged with her mum. Well, she hasn’t
Bell & Moonbah Ridge Keiki
looked back since (see photo in Part Bred Foal Pictorial).
Weemala Fresita (pending) or Chilli is a typical feisty
little redhead who is already bossing her big sister,
Weemala Cougar, around.
Moonbah Ridge Keiki who Bell started under saddle
in November last year attended her first outing under
saddle this month with a trip to a local Adult Riding
Club dressage day. The grown up horses we took didn’t
really help matters by calling constantly when we took
Keiki away (she is quite the favourite) but other than a
few disobediences wanting to head back to her friend
during her first test, we were quite happy with her. And
she improved out of site in her second test without the
distraction of the calling friend.
Moonbah Fortune Cookie who was also started by Bell in
November headed off to ‘boarding school’ with Michael
Godding – Classical Dressage at the start of January. At
home he was starting to think he was The Man but it
was quite surprising when we took him off the float at
Moonbah Fortune Cookie & Michael Godding
14

Michael’s, he quickly decided that maybe he didn’t know
everything and turned to me for support. Michael has
sent very positive reports back about Cookie and, like
all the Sammy (Briarlane Ebony Fortune) sons he has
worked with already, he says Cookie is eager to learn. He
has the movement and ability to go far and there is also
just enough spunk in this boy for him to be something
special. I went and watched a session with him after two
weeks and it is very exciting to watch my boy’s potential
and abilities shine through. You can clearly see both his
sire and dam in him in different ways.
We will be taking Keiki and Cookie to a few local shows
(Gunning and Goulburn) in the coming months and
would love to see other Morgans attend.”
Report from Helga Frolich of Moonbah Ridge
Morgans: “Here in Jindabyne Summer has arrived and
the grass is green and long, have even had Equinox
Cashmere in a diet paddock. Have attended a Working
Equitation clinic with Cashmere in December and been
having lots of fun riding her out and about on the many
trails here and in the neighbouring parks, which has been
great as I am now able to ride much better with my new
knee and really enjoying it.
Moonbah Gambling Man – above with his breeder, Helga
and below with his owner, Rocky
The other really exciting thing that has happened is that
finally I am going to be able to ride one of my own bred
horses, a son of Sammy and Tarra Tandu. Isabell has
started him under saddle. She has done a great job. I have
not had the experience of riding a progeny of my own
breeding as they have moved on before it was time. I
have had great feedback from owners telling me the nice
reports of times they have enjoyed with their horses so
now I am going to be able to do the same.
The two young yearlings are looking good and I am now
also able to spend more time with them as well. Tandu is
progressing well and I am pleased with him.
For the last two days of the year I went with some friends
to Bermagui and took horses and had the experience of
riding on the beach. I did not personally take a horse of
my own as I had just served Cashmere and Tandu was
not really advanced enough to take along. But Rocky, the
person who bought Moonbah Gambling Man, brought
him and I got the chance to ride him on the beach. He
has grown well and really has some height about him, he
is very relaxed in himself and loves to stride along, and
he was the brave one who led the others along the beach.
I then also was able to take him to a Working Equitation
Clinic mid-January for a weekend and he was great for a
4-year-old and I had comments on him over the weekend,
some thought he was a Warmblood!”
Catch up with Marcia Gosper and pure Morgan colt
Ariga Park Tribute: “It would be almost ten years ago
on an MS Charity ride when I was riding along and rode
past a woman riding a gorgeous bay mare who had beauty
and presence. I couldn’t help but introduce myself to the
rider and enquire about the mare who had instantly taken
my attention. It turned out that it was Helen McLennan of
Ariga Park Morgan Stud and she was riding Mt Tawonga
Melody.
This was the beginning of a wonderful association with
Morgan horses for me. Having had a lifetime of experience
with starting and training young horses, it wasn’t long
before I had the pleasure of working with many young
Morgans from both Helen and her connections. I have
been absolutely blown away with their temperament,
trainability and, last but certainly not least, their beauty.
Attitude
I recall saying to Helen, and for that matter I still say to
this day: ‘I would be happy to take a bad one!’ (because I
just don’t believe there is such a thing with this wonderful
Morgan breed).
Earlier last year I was offered the fantastic opportunity
to go into partnership with Helen with her young colt,
Ariga Park Tribute (who is the only foal in Australia out
of Mt Tawonga Melody who was that very first Morgan
that I laid eyes on). Tribute is now almost 2½ years old
and is everything I imagined him to be. He is growing
so fast and has the most loving personality. Nothing is
a problem to him. I’ve led him out off other horses, laid
over his back, long reined him all around the property ...
and quite honestly ... he loves it.
I reckon the Morgan breed is worth their weight in gold
and I can see now why they become a family horse for
life. Why on earth would you want to sell one once you
got one
our members may remember Nina and her sister Amy
riding Wirraway Nefertiti at our shows and enjoying
themselves with her and the big smiles all the adults
had on their faces. Bronwyn Burcher and the girls came
down to try Rienzi out before Christmas and then took
him home for a trial after Boxing Day. Nina and Rienzi
make a beautiful pairing.
John has been busy starting Omar Rebel Rouser (Rienzi’s
younger half-brother) under saddle and Omar Stepping
Out to harness. Both boys are taking to the tasks set very
well.
And as for our boy Ariga Park Tribute, keep your eyes
peeled – he will be standing at stud in the near future
and will be out and about promoting what I believe is the
breed of a lifetime! I am enclosing a couple of photos,
one of yet another beautiful Morgan I had the pleasure of
riding on Australia Day called Ariga Park Attitude, aka
Dude! What a legend! He didn’t flinch one bit when I
mounted and started swinging the Australian flag about.
God I love these Morgans! (Everyone should have
one!)”
Here at Omar Morgans in Collector things are going
beautifully, we have paddocks full of grass and the rain
keeps coming. All the horses are enjoying the season.
We are proud to announce that Omar Rienzi has found
a new home with 13 year old Nina Hvejsel. Some of
From the Tasmanian SLO, Tammy Woolley: December was
pretty quiet for Fernleigh Creek Neo and I, a couple of lessons
and a trip to the local riding club grounds where we had our first
canter out in an open paddock. Well, Neo forgot about steering
and brakes! Something for us to work on. From mid-December
to end of January I decided Neo needed a good break and I was
busy with Christmas and camping holidays anyway so he was
turned out for about five weeks. He had quite a growth spurt
in that time and his girth expanded by three holes (3 inches)! I
hopped straight on him – walk, trot and canter around the arena
within 10 minutes. He is amazing!
Take care and enjoy your Morgans.
Deborah Gorman
In the last week we have managed a couple of rides on the
arena and a ride at the local Equestrian Centre, which I am
luckily enough to live next door to! So we went out the back
gate and then rode for 1.5km through the cross country course
to the dressage park where we had our first ride on one of the
competition arenas that we will be using in the future. I entered
arena one up the centreline and around the outside track, got
to the gate and in true cheeky Morgan style, Neo tries to duck
out! Sorry Neo, you have to stay in for a bit longer. Walked past
again, all good. Pick up trot, tries to duck out again! I am very
lucky I get to have a good practice before we actually attempt
a competition.
Neo also had his first ride at the beach! And it also must have
been his first float ride with another horse and, after an initial
very girly squeal, he travelled very well with his new friend.
At the beach, the tide was right in and there were tiny waves
(imagine the smallest wave possible) so he was a bit tentative
into the water and took about 10 minutes to go right in; this was
after sampling the salty water with some big slurps, yuk! But
all in all, he was very well behaved, even trying two new things
this week; there was not one shy, jump or so much as a flick of
an ear. The most enthusiastic and bold horse I have ever had.
Western Australia
Since the last MM the weather over here in WA has certainly
heated up, meaning that a lot of the horses are having a break.
However, the ANMS committee has been hard at work preparing
for WA’s first National Morgan Show. We are all excited about
the weekend and are looking forward to spending a weekend
dedicated to our Morgans! I know that Valerie (Bremen) will be
including a lot more details in her report however I would like
to invite as many people as possible to be involved through the
Photo Competition classes.
News from Kath Hare: “Well, we have been training for the
upcoming ANMS – weather permitting. We have had some really
hot days where it is unrealistic to do any horsey things except the
necessary. Anyway, have been a bit creative, amazing what you
can do with a flower pot, plastic bag, rapid set and some conduit
– Bending Poles! Ended up making 15 of the darn things, some
for another competitor and some for my granddaughter who
rides; no mean feat mixing concrete in 37 degree heat!
17

Also fashioned a gate from some bollards and rope. Now, if
only I could have the courage to show jump!
Seriously, we have been training every week (weather permitting)
along with organising sponsorship, prizes, food van, etc, etc.
We are really starting to appreciate how much effort goes into
organising an ANMS – and we have a committee – well done
those in the past who have done it all themselves.
We have had some lovely businesses come on board for
sponsorship in the forms of cash and gift vouchers, we also
have trade stalls so we are hoping our first ANMS will be a
success. I have been told by a reliable source that our trail will
be very challenging, can’t wait to see it – expect pictures in
the next MM.
We already know we are having a few interstate visitors which
is awesome. I attended the 2012 ANMS in Adelaide with a few
of the other WA members and we had a great time, so anyone
who is considering coming over, DO IT. We are in the Swan
Valley wine region so there is heaps to do and see.”
News from Gail Nas: “Here are some pics of Phelcrest Tulsa
aka Cruz (Phelcrest Mighty Montana x Karenza Minette) which
were taken last year when we were out at a course. He is coming
along really well and I am having a lot of fun with him. He has
really stretched me to learn as he can be quite feisty at times and
then he remembers that I’m the boss and gets on with things!
He has certainly helped me learn a lot about leadership and I
have really improved those skills with him during our time
together. I just love it when he sees me from across the yard
and comes running over to the fence to say hello, with such
focus in his eyes.
I have seen the info about the Morgan show and emailed Rachel
to see if we can meet so she can explain a few things to me so
maybe I might be able to take him along.”
Gail & Phelcrest Tulsa
News from Debbie Dowden at Challa Station: “Everything
has gone very quiet around Challa Station. With just six horses
here and Summer in full swing, the workload has decreased as
the temperature has soared. We are in desperate need of some
rain and I’m glad I reduced numbers before the Summer. Challa
Station Tirrakoa and Ariga Park Loquacious have gone back to
live in Perth with Jess Blackwell. I know Jess loves her new filly
and I am happy with the way things worked out. Challa Station
Forever has gone to her new home in southern WA. Even though
Georgina Griffiths bought her sight unseen, it was abundantly
clear that Forever was with the right person when they met for
the first time. Challa Station Boudicca, who shredded her digital
extensor tendon in a freak accident, is recovering well at her
new part time home. It couldn’t be repaired, she just has to learn
to compensate for it. Sam Jones and I have decided to form a
partnership in Boudicca and perhaps ride her in the future but
definitely breed from her. Between us we will provide a good
future for this lovely filly.
Prior to Christmas our new cattle arrived. For 125 years, Challa
Station grew white wool from merino sheep. The plague of wild
dogs forced us out of sheep and into cattle. Running cattle here
provides the horses and I with some wonderful opportunities
to learn new skills. Before we bought our new cows, we had
to muster some of the scrub bulls off the property. Mustering
these huge, dangerous bulls is risky and it alternates between
terrifying and thrilling. It involves the aeroplane, bull buggies
and motorbikes. Muggins here was on a motorbike but that
was better than putting Lenny [Tandarra Millennium] at risk
by taking him on one of these musters.
Once our new cows arrived, it was a different story. They were
off a station further north so were a little touchy but not mad
18

Tailing the cattle out, view from Tandarra Millennium's saddle
like the bulls. We kept them in the new cattle yards here at the
homestead for ten days to settle them. Every day I had to go
down on the horses and ride amongst them, keep them quiet
and teach them to move away from pressure. If I tried to walk
amongst the cows on foot, they would be very reactive. On
horseback I was accepted much more readily. Even though I
only rode Lenny and Bella (stockhorse), I brought Challa Station
Willow and Holly (Mt Tawonga Belinda) down to have some
time with the cattle in preparation for the future.
After the cattle were deemed quiet enough, and the Christmas
festivities were over, it was time to take the cattle to their new
home, 60km away at the top end of Challa. They are a little
bit like horses; if we had trucked them there and just let them
go, they would very likely have wandered away, got lost and
perished on a fenceline somewhere. They needed to learn where
the water was before it was safe to let them go. We put them in
yards near the windmill at Top Camp and every day would go
up there at dawn and tail them out for a few hours before putting
them back into the yards. Tailing them out is Lenny’s absolute
favourite job. We start off a bit quick, when the cattle are first let
out; there’s a bit of cantering amongst the trees while we settle
the lead. Then Lenny and I walk quietly ahead of them and the
motorbikes keep the tail of the mob following. The cows have
to learn to follow Lenny out to the grassy patch a couple of
kilometres from the yards. Then they have to eat until they are
full before we take them home. Lenny also eats until he is full,
then he eats a bit more. Then we quietly walk them back to the
yards. Tailing out the cattle is relaxing and enjoyable for both
horse and rider. The only downside is that the best grass is in
the crabhole country. Imagine a patch of grass amongst shady
trees but where the ground is pockmarked with deep holes about
Deb & Lenny and the bike brigade
50cm deep, and about the size of a horse’s hoof. If you try to
walk across it on horseback, the horse frequently slips into an
existing hole or opens up a new one as it treads on some delicate
ground. You can only walk and you have to be really careful.
The horse has to do the bulk of the work in the crabhole country
because none of the motorbike riders like getting stuck in it.
Lenny put up with it because there was so much feed there and
it felt good to have such a reliable horse under me. I remember
the time Lenny and I rode back through the crabhole country
at night, coming back from a late trek. (Trust your horse, his
night vision is better than yours.) Daytime through crabhole
country is easy in comparison. We tailed the cattle out for four
days and then left them at the windmill once we were sure they
knew where the water was.
Before Summer hit with a vengeance I was working at getting
Holly back under saddle. She has seven hours total time and
hasn’t been ridden for about three years so I’m pretty much
starting again with her. I’m aiming to have her going quietly
under saddle by the time Ian Leighton is here for his clinic in
late April. I also have to get Willow going under saddle, she is
four years old now and whilst she is still growing, she is ready
for some light work.
So why would I bother with a one eyed, twelve year old mare
when I have so many others to work Well, I did have her
on the market, but as soon as I put a saddle on Holly and she
transformed into a magnificent creature with natural self-carriage,
elevated knee action and a promise of great potential, I knew
I had to try. She is also a very sensitive mare and the lightest
touch gets a response. If I can put the time into her I believe
it will be worth it. I also believe she wants to be ridden. If she
sees me saddling up another horse, she often comes over as if
to offer her services.
With the ANMS rapidly approaching, I would like to say I have
my horses in work, but I don’t. It’s too hot. I am, however,
teaching the yearlings to be hosed off in case they make it to
the show and have to be washed beforehand. I have bought a
western saddle and bosal for Lenny and when we have had a
few cooler days, I have been riding him. I dragged my daughter
Kate out to my ‘international equestrian arena’ – a huge dry
claypan that is our skiing lake after it rains– and did a photo
shoot with Lenny in his Cowboy Dressage gear. I was very
happy with the photos but it didn’t really advance my training
towards the ANMS too much. While we were tailing out cattle,
I noticed some knots in Lenny’s mane and I got them out with
my fingers. Is that OK preparation for the ANMS Showing
horses is a world away from what I normally do. But I’m doing
it just once because the ANMS is in Perth for the very first time.
I hope to see you there!”
News from here at Hodgson Park: While things have been quiet
on many fronts here at Hodgson Park, December saw Hodgson
Park Telopea travel to his new home! Late in November, Michelle
Higgins came out to visit while she was over in WA. She was
looking for that special youngster to bring on as her next horse.
In typical Telopea fashion, he was keen to be part of the attention
– even when we were looking at the other horses! And so, in the
way of Morgans, Telopea chose Michelle. Upon arriving back
in Victoria, Michelle kept thinking about Telopea, and the rest
is history! There was one small hiccup – Telopea was in WA
and Michelle lived in Victoria! And Telopea had never been on
a float! But his amazing temperament shone through and the
weekend before the truck was due to pick him up, Telopea had
his first floating lesson. I led him out of the paddock (his first
time away from his herd) and up to the float. He looked at it,
a bit unsure. But his curiosity got the better of him and within
five minutes he was in the float. Backing out was a bit trickier
(note to self – teach horses to back before getting them on the
float!) but still no issue. Then straight back on the float like a
professional who does it every day – he would have been happy
to stand there eating hay for ages! So come his leaving day,
despite being very unsure about this big, noisy truck parked out
on the road this little Morgan, who had only just turned one,
walked into the truck and made the big trip to the other side of
Australia. It was evident from the very start that Michelle and
Telopea were going to develop a special bond and I can’t wait
to see what they get up to in the future.
As I am sitting here writing my SLO story, Judi Anderson is
sure to be wondering if perhaps I have completely abandoned
my duties to the Morgan Messenger! No, that is not the case, but
I have spent the last couple of days, shall we say, “promoting
the breed” and time has not stood still waiting for me to come
inside and quit playing with the horses.
I hope everyone has had some time to recover from Christmas
and also to enjoy the results of the lovely rain that has blessed
some of us. It has certainly helped to raise the spirits and make
the countryside look pretty good.
As the December issue of the MM was my first as SLO, I have to
apologise for missing a couple of articles that were provided to
me and for that I am very sorry and will include in this issue.
News from Ruth McGill: “Aussie (Oz Hicountry Mitch)
and I have competed in our first Quantum Savvy ‘QSports’
competition. This event was held for the first time ever at Pomona
on 1st November. It was an amazing day and we had so much
fun. Aussie was perfect, love this boy. We competed in liberty,
bareback & bridleless and contact ridden classes. We even got
Abby (Moonbah Fortunate One) continues her dressage training
and has been trail riding over the summer. She will even wade
through large masses of water. Wirraway Manhattan has gone
off to be started under saddle. We cannot wait for his return!
We have had three lots of visitors over the summer, all learning
about Morgan Horses. I believe all three will be talking with more
Morgan owners and will become Morgan owners themselves in
the future. We have decided to go to the National Show in WA
so we are looking forward to catching up with Morgan people
and their horses there. See you at the show!”
He also helps me out with lessons for my students, taking care
of my little 7yo learner so patiently. And we have joined a trail
riding group and have started going for trail rides which we
are both enjoying.
Hayley (Oz Hicountry Heaven Scent) has been busy with her
new baby girl by Wirraway Trademark (aka Brikki). Cockatoo
Park Dream is the most amazing pony, she is perfect in every
way. She is definitely a Morgan, annoying Gilbert (alpaca)
constantly, pulling his tail and trying to get him to play. Hayley
will go back in foal to Brik very soon.”
News from Helena Shanal: As I reported last issue, we were at
Warwick Horse Trials clinic and unofficial competition at the end
of last year. It was a fantastic clinic and comp and better yet, the
inaugural ‘Hoof & Woof’ event. We had to jump a 30cm course
with our horse then streak back to the start, jump off, grab our
dog on a leash and RUN the course where owner and dog had to
jump all the same jumps. Shadow, Killara Lodge Oops and I won
by 5 seconds. The prizes were fantastic and included a bag of
horse feed, dog treats and human treats! Thanks WHT, a fabulous
weekend and a lot of laughs! The photo shows Shadow wearing
his jingley bells
and Santa suit,
the jumping. Some
people dressed
themselves and
Eatons Hill News: “We are proud to announce we have had
our first pure Morgan bred by Eatons Hill on 4th December.
She is a buckskin filly to MEMC Crown Royal and Wilga Park
Lisianthus. We have called her Eatons Hill Malou (see photo
in Pure Bred Foal Pictorial). Eatons Hill Bravo, our part bred
gelding, is turning into a very nice type. We just have to find
him a home. We can also confirm Tui’s Song of Songs is in foal
to Wirraway Trademark and Lisianthus is back in foal to Crown
Royal, due late 2015.
This showjumping pic
is obviously not taken
during the Hoof &
Woof, which was only
30cm. I wouldn’t like
to attempt this on foot
(80cm)! I am thrilled
to report Oops jumped
his first competitive
course of 95cm cleanly
and with style. Also
clear cross country.
According to Oops,
you cannot be too careful, it is best to overjump each fence by
at least 50cm. Makes for a springy ride!
In January, Oops posted a whopping 7.2 score at Toowoomba to
qualify for the Australian 6yo Young Pony finals in March.
The best news had been that Killara Lodge Oops (aka Double
S Eclipse) had been named as a finalist at the Queensland EA
Dressage End of Year Awards. I am excited to announce that
Oops was awarded ‘Queensland Dressage 5yo Young Pony of
the Year 2014’. Nice to have the Morgans out there.”
From Ami Anderson: “Had a wonderful little reunion this
afternoon (Monday 19 January). Aura Dell Robyn has spent
the last 10 years at the RDA giving able-bodied and severely
disabled children the chance to ride horses. She has been an
amazing girl and loved by many. Unfortunately at the beautiful
age of 33, turning 34 in April, she can no longer bear weight
on her back. My daughter Josie, son Indy and the RDA carer,
Michelle, came with me down to the yard where she was. We
called her and she looked up and came straight over to me,
nuzzled and gave me kisses. OMG, how horses remember. I
bought her as a 2 year old from Mary Reed. She has been with
me, Di Howard (Wirraway Sport Morgans), and the RDA. She
will retire and live the rest of her life peacefully.”
News from Wilga Park Morgans: “Well, December 2014
started with a bang at Wilga Park. Darling Downs Western
Dressage Club held an event at Wilga Park that included group
instruction on Western Dressage, morning tea, and then lots of
fun hours in the Trail Paddock.
The event was to finish at around 12 noon, but the participants
were so keen to try the Trail Paddock one more time that we
waved goodbye to the last group at around 2.30pm. It was a
fun day all round.
News from Craig & Lea-Anne Willett: “Well another show
year is about to start and we should be prepping Jay (Wilga
Park Jacobinia) for that, however, we have had flooding rains
now for a month. Mud and palominos don’t go so well! Update
on Jay’s recovery is his fetlock is coming along nicely. We are
always chopping and changing supplements, but I think we’re
on a winner at the moment. Trying to keep it less chemical
based with turmeric and green lipped mussel powder. We are
also trying a new vitamin supplement for overall wellness. It
has been 12 months to the day we had the surgery that went so
horribly wrong that it nearly took him from us. I feel blessed
to still have our boy and that we have gotten him this far. Look
forward to catching up with a few of you at Allora Show!”
It was wonderful to see lots of old friends and make lots of new
friends at this event. Many said they had been hanging out to
try the Trail Paddock and just could not miss the opportunity
when they saw it advertised. Linda Shore, on her RanchBoss
Cortez part bred filly, Boulevard Gabrielle, ran the event as a
‘fun, learning experience for horse and rider’.
Some horses had never stepped on a blue tarp before; others
had never opened a gate or side-passed over logs. Moving the
forequarters and then the hindquarters to manoeuvre through
particular obstacles was a new experience for many. Climbing
on a tractor tyre filled with dirt was certainly a new experience
for all – and seemed to be the most challenging for the horse,
but the most exhilarating for the rider.
We were very excited when Rhonda Menzies-Moreland brought
along her young mare, Shibui Cilla Black. Cilla was a little
nervous of her new surroundings at first but, under saddle,
showed she was a smart, thinking mare.
We were pleased to have Keleigh Newman (who, with her
business partner, organised Total Equine Expo 2014) attend.
Keleigh was one of those waiting for an invitation to try the
Trail Paddock. It was a totally successful day all round!
Wilga Park Jacobinia enjoying the sprinkler which was his
Christmas present
The Trail Paddock is also a very useful training ground for the
youngsters. Tammy-Lee Penney took her yearling boy, Wilga
Park Summer Storm, around the trail to investigate all the strange
obstacles. He was a super cool dude. He managed the bridges
without drama and was keen to investigate the ‘livestock’ in our
pen. Uncle Oscar (Mt Tawonga Oscar) was there as his safety
blanket, but within a short time, Storm was out in front braving
all the new things, without the moral support from Oscar.
We enjoyed the company of visitors John and Nerolie Gate for
half a day – in between showers of rain. John, who is from north
Tawonga Oscar at
of Sydney, has begun his journey to find his Morgan. We have
encouraged him to visit as many Morgan people as possible. We
recall those wonderful days of meeting almost every Morgan
horse in Australia when I was searching for my Morgan, and
hope that John goes down the same path, savouring every
minute of his search.
Of all our 2014 foals, Wilga Park River Gum seems to be the most
photogenic. He is also shaping up to be the perfect little stallion
to carry on the Ragtime Oro Blanco bloodlines in Australia.
River has the most engaging personality; he has athleticism to
burn and on the end of the lead rope he is brave and so very
compliant … and smart! He has suppleness and balance at this
early age that we all strive for in our grown horse. His legs and
feet are simply awesome as well. I am keen to see how River
progresses under the hands of Ian Leighton. Ian is holding a 2-
day horsemanship clinic at Wilga Park in April (weekend after
Easter), and we have engaged him to spend a couple of days
with our horses after the clinic.
Linda Shore is in the process of preparing the youngsters for the
upcoming shows in February and March (Greg has hurt his back
and his shoulder and has been banned from handling youngsters
for a number of months), and once our flurry of shows is over,
Ian will continue their training.
Above: Linda removing the mud from Wilga Park Castelao
Below: Wilga Park Silver Sabre after his bath
Linda has taken the yearlings out of their comfort zone and
introduced some scary objects to them as well as teaching them
to lunge and trot out for show. She has introduced them to the
enjoyment of having a bath! Wilga Park Latte was so cool about
the whole process that she decided she’d like to investigate what
was in the dairy shed while Linda was hosing her (below).
We intend to take Latte, along with Wilga Park Silver Sabre,
to Allora and Clifton Shows in February. Latte was also to go
to Toowoomba Royal, but her new owners, Bruce and Julie
Cornelius, would like her home in Tassie by March for Julie’s
birthday.
With all the rain of late, our horses were wearing baubles of
heavy black mud in their manes, so most of them enjoyed a bath.
WD40 is a magnificent item to have in your tool kit. It detangles
knots, dissolves hard mud balls and leaves the hair as slick as
any expensive horse de-tangler product. (WD40 is based on fish
oil, so is not harmful.) I can vouch for its many benefits.
Allora and Clifton Shows are fast approaching for we south-east
Queenslanders. Allora will possibly be done and dusted by the
time this is printed, but Clifton has Morgan Classes on Sunday
15th February. They are Morgan classes with much more ‘zing’
than in previous years. We will have a Best Presented class for
those who just want to have a practice run with their horse. The
pure and part bred classes are split into age groups so that we
can have champion stallion, mare and gelding and Supreme
Champion Pure Morgan Exhibit, and a Supreme Champion Part
Morgan Exhibit – both these will be presented with a trophy as
well as their wide, coloured sash.
The ridden classes are also a little different in as much as we
will have an English Ridden class and a Western Ridden class
– with a trophy for the champion in each section. Wilga Park
Morgans have sponsored these classes as the Show Society
has been struggling and is trying to encourage numbers to the
show … without the entries the show will fold. We are doing
our bit to encourage the local Morgan owners to participate.
It is such a wonderfully laid back atmosphere at Clifton, it is
the perfect place to take young horses, but also is competitive
enough for the older, tried and true, competitors. Please come
along and compete for the trophies. If we have good attendance
this year, we will continue to sponsor the event with trophies
for years to come.
24

Wilga Park trophies for Clifton Show
We have come to the end of our breeding season with seven
foals expected for 2015. We have one Wilga Park Conquistador
baby, four Cortez babies and two Ragtime Oro Blanco babies on
the way. Exciting times from mid September to mid December
this year.”
News from here at Warrabel Morgans: With the show season
upon us, our Haymeron Park Merlin Hawk is having some time
with Linda Shore for some fine tuning and preparation for the
outside world and hopefully to teach Peter and I the ropes and
rules when showing a stallion. So, once again, we are looking
forward to another new experience with our boy and are looking
forward to getting around and catching up with everyone.
Our newest addition, Shibui Cilla Black, is a gentle soul with
an abundance of intelligence. In the few months she has been
with us she has proven to be really an honest mare and she
always tries. We had a lovely day at Greg and Kathy’s, with
a number of other riders, all testing the obstacle course. To be
really honest, I was just a little nervous about taking this ‘new
horse’ to this place with scary things; once under saddle and
with Kathy’s quiet voice encouraging me to relax and consider
letting go of my death grip on the reins, she went so well and
was hardly fazed at all by any of the strange obstacles she came
across. A truly amazing breed.
We had Morgan classes at the Northern Hack and Halter show
on 7 December. Only two Morgans there but of particular note
is that Red Bluff Whirlwind had his debut with Brittany Burnett.
They looked fabulous and did a fantastic job. Whirlwind is a
credit to the breed and he and Brittany will be a great pair to
watch. The other horse entered was Mt Tawonga Kitty, shown
and ridden by Zarah Inwood, who also did a great job considering
Kitty was revved up and doing her best impersonation of a
fire breathing dragon! Well done to both handlers and horses.
News from Eva Hornung, Wildu Mandaawi Morgans: “It has been a
very hectic couple of months. Foaling was one drama after another, but
an end result of three gorgeous foals, and three healthy mares. Wildu
Wayfarer (MEMC Tequila Cuervo x Blue Gum Bonneville), our giant
surprise, was sold at birth to Deb Thompson. This is a heartwarming
pairing: he is as if made for her. Bonne is in foal again for another of this
cross. Wildu Marlena (Mt Tawonga King x Fernleigh Creek Nena) is so
good, it will be hard to part with her, but she is half sister to my stallion
and full sister to Maddie (Fernleigh Creek Madralena).
Fernleigh Creek Antares learned how to be collected and how to be a
gentleman while breeding. He had a busy Spring, and I am really proud
of him. I love him, enjoy working with him, and am hopeful about his
future. He has bonded very closely with me. He also rather likes my vet
now, since she turns up with the AV now and then.
Victoria
I hope all our members had a safe and happy holiday season,
with plenty of time to spend with your Morgans! Haymeron
Park Oscar Kqar has had an extended break over this Spring
and Summer due to my moving house (twice!), and university
and job interviews taking up most of my time. I’m sure Oscar
is not at all upset with this turn of events, he’s as fat as ever and
loves ruling it over his paddock companions.
Wildu Wayfarer
Red Bluff Evita (Clearwater Black Majesty x Mt Tawonga
Evonne) has joined the WM project. She is a beautiful black
Lippitt, and I feel a great cross to my boy. Thank you, Caroline
Tarr, for letting her travel so far (5 kms) to her new phase in
life! Evita is green started under saddle (by Michele Meijer),
and I am pushing her on. She loves it.
Australian Morgan, Issue 2, is all but out! This is the West
Australian issue, but it includes much more than just West
Australian material – see notice on page 2 of this MM.”
Here at Crystanby I welcomed a colt from MEMC Crown
Royal and Eagleview Benita – Crystanby Keitaro (below).
The jury is still out on what colour he is, could be bay or could
be buckskin, so have to have him tested to be sure but getting
tail hairs is another matter! Big thank you to Eva from Wildu
Mandaawi as she looked after Benita during her pregnancy and
foaled Keitaro down at her place. If not for that he most likely
would not be here.
Michele Meijer
In December we moved back to Melbourne from Samaria, and
while I’m missing the farm and all its inhabitants, I’m excited
about what’s in store for me for the next few years. Hopefully
Oscar and Haymeron Park Pascal Kqar aren’t missing their
friends too much. Pascal is loving his new home, making friends
with a Clydesdale cross and two 17 hand Thoroughbreds! He’s
much more settled away from the young boys his age but still
enjoys playing with Ozzie, the Clydesdale cross, who’s the next
youngest in the paddock. Pascal is still growing like a weed and
towers over Oscar – though managing, at the same time, to look
smaller! He’s still very narrow and has quite a lot of filling out
to do before he’s ready to start. I’m looking forward to doing
much more groundwork with him, and mouthing him this year, in
preparation for starting him under saddle next Spring or Summer.
Oscar and I are hoping to go hunting again this Winter and so
it’s time to start getting him fit again! I’m also hoping that this
year I’ll finally be able to get my own side saddle, which has
been a dream of mine for the last few years.
Unfortunately we didn’t get to the Summer Royal this year, but
it was great to see so many people made the effort with their
Morgans. From the photos I have seen, your horses were all a
credit to you, so well done everyone! See photos, results and
report elsewhere in the MM.
2016 Australian National Morgan Show
With the 2015 National Show rushing towards us, plans are
already afoot for next year’s show to be held in Victoria. At
this stage we have made a provisional booking for the Elmore
Equestrian Centre on 12 and 13 March (the weekend after the
long weekend). This venue is reasonably priced for Victoria, but
is still not cheap and we would appreciate any other suggestions
from our members, plus any offers to be on the organizing
committee. Please take note that a requirement for venues is
that there is an indoor arena, stabling and camping facilities.
Elmore is centrally located in Victoria and easily assessable
for those traveling from New South Wales or South Australia,
which is also an important factor.
27
We will also be looking for sponsorship, so any good leads
on money or donations for prizes or raffles will be much
appreciated.
Please contact Kerry Hill with any ideas or suggestions –
2015 Victorian Morgan Horse State Show
Once again, Kerry Hill will be organizing a State Show, which
will be held in late November and most likely again at Ruffy.
Although not confirmed, the last weekend in November may
suit most people, especially if we are able to give everyone a

it more notice than last year.
All those who attended the show at Ruffy spoke highly of the
facilities provided and the support from the local Ruffy Adult
Riding Club who manned the canteen and helped set up and
pack up after the show. The wonderful green grass arena and
the oak trees surrounding the grounds are a perfect setting for
any show. Although not many camped overnight, the Hills did,
and would encourage more to do so this year.
Morgan Horse Riding Group
Although we have not yet become an official riding group and
member of the HRCAV, Kerry has had several people interested
in forming this group. It only needs ten members to get the ball
rolling. If you are already a member of the HRCAV, you will only
need to pay an associate fee. For new members, your fee will
include your rider registration and insurance fees. All members
(when we are finally sorted out) will be able to compete in other
HRCAV competitions and clinics, and possibly organize some
of our own to suit the needs of the members. Morgan members
in New South Wales and South Australia are also welcome to
join this Riding Group, and become members of the HRCAV.
To have some fun, even before we have an official riding group,
John Goodwin will be organizing a social trail ride at Ruffy and
we will let you know when this is happening.
Big congratulations
to Louise Barnes &
placing 5th in the top ten
and receiving the most
2015 HRCAV TTT Showing
Congratulations to Jodie Egginton who won an embroidered
rug. Jodie and Red Bluff Rosita won the section for the best
performed Morgan at the Show. Our team of HRCAV members
and horses consisted of Kerry Hill on Mt Tawonga Campbell,
Caitlyn Hulme on Musketeer, Jodie Egginton on Red Bluff Rosita
and Jessica Mason on Red Bluff Nakita. Kerry and Jessica say
Blair Ireland & Bellemond StonewallJakson
that their horses were not the best behaved on the day. (Jessica
says: “Unfortunately we didn’t have the best day at TTT due to
loudspeaker and some nervousness issues. But regardless, Red
Bluff Nakita looked lovely.”)
Jessica took her horse in the first two classes and then left, but
Kerry persevered with Campbell and while she reports that he
did improve by the afternoon, he was still very excited by all
the other horses. Caitlyn and Musketeer were able take home
a couple of ribbons, but Jodie Egginton had a wonderful time,
coming 3rd in the Led class, winning the Ridden class and placing
4th in Mount Most Suitable for HRCAV. A great effort. Thanks
to Jodie and Caitlyn’s efforts, our team came in 75th place out
of the 82 teams that competed. We hope that we can enter more
teams in the future and, with experience, do much better. This
HRCAV showing is pretty serious stuff! Photos next page.
Kerry Hill has been busy taking Mt Tawonga Campbell to
several shows. These include the HRCAV Top Teams event,
where members of the HRCAV were able to enter a team of four
Morgan Horses. “We did not win, but it was great to be able to
feature our breed. Two weeks later we were back at Werribee
for the Morgan Classes at the Royal Melbourne Horse Show on
the Saturday (see report elsewhere in the Messenger) and then
returning on the
Monday to compete
in the Level 3
HRCAV Ring where
we picked up some
more ribbons.
The following
weekend we spent
at Ruffy, competing
in two official
HRCAV Shows; a
twilight show on the
Saturday organized
by the North Eastern
Riding Club and on
the Sunday there
was a Gymkhana
organized by the
Kerry & Campbell
at Ruffy
28

Ruffy ARC, who also hosted a HRCAV ring on the day.
We had a great weekend, camping there on the Saturday night.
It was a great social event, with many other riders commenting
on how well Campbell was presented. I won the Level 3 Rider
Class, came 2nd in Smartest on Parade, 3rd in Ridden Mount
Level 3 and 4th in Mount Suitable for HRCAV. I also won a
1st in the Show Hunter Galloway Class in the Open Ring, and
came second in the Galloway Class. On Saturday I was pleased
with Campbell’s performance and we placed well, but no firsts.
We also snuck into the Freshman’s Show Jumping and I had a
clear round at 60cm, which was quite an achievement seeing
that he was being ridden in a dressage saddle and was plaited,
so that I had no hair to grab onto!”
Unfortunately this is my last Morgan Messenger as Victorian
SLO. I’ve enjoyed the last few years in this position, and will
still enjoy reading everyone’s news, every second month!
Morgans at Melbourne Summer Royal
Horse owners to attend. Not only is it important to show other
people that we are serious with our breed, in a lovely setting,
My thanks to all who entered and competed at the RASV
Royal Melbourne Horse Show held at Werribee Park National
Equestrian Centre. We had our highest entry numbers ever,
with six pure bred Morgans (including two stallions) and
seven part bred Morgan horses. These horses were very well
presented and drew some very favourable comments from the
judge, Hans Mees. It was a great effort, especially when some
classes, including Western Horses, were cancelled, due to lack
of entries. This show is an important show in Victoria and it
is important to have this opportunity to showcase our breed to
other members of the equestrian world.
Ribbons and sashes, as seen in the results, were well spread around
those participating. In the pure bred field congratulations went
to Kerry Hill’s Mt Tawonga Campbell for the Best Presented
Pure Bred Morgan. He was presented by Linda Brooks, who
will be heading to Western Australia in March to judge at the
National Morgan Show. The Supreme Champion Led Pure Bred
(Conformation Class) was won by stallion Watching Royalty,
presented by MHAA President, Beccara Lloyd. Watching
Royalty has won this class for the last couple of years at the
ANMS, so it was pleasing to see that the judge confirmed what
we already knew: Roy is a wonderful example of the Morgan
breed. The third Pure Bred Class – Ridden – was another
interesting variation for the results. The Champion Ridden was
won by the stallion, Shibui All Black (aka Elton), owned by
Gillian Wooldridge and ridden by Erin Funk. In this class each
of the horses was given a workout, very much like a dressage
test, and Elton did a brilliant job. We hope that Gillian can find
time to train him and take him to some dressage competitions.
Gillian, who had been talked into entering the show by myself
and had then been really busy and hard pressed to get the time
to prepare her horse for the show, had a big smile on her face
with this final result.
with heaps of room in the rings, but I also use it as a learning
time, to see what other people and their horses are wearing and
enjoy having a roam in the retail tents, seeing what new clothing
and bling brow bands are on offer. Even if you cannot present
your horse at this show next year, come along and be our support
crew and you will learn heaps. Next year you can use the 2016
Summer Royal as good preparation for the Australian National
Morgan Show which will be held in Victoria that year.
Kerry Hill
Some comments from other members
on the Melbourne Summer Royal
Michelle
Higgins: “Big
day for Hodgson
Park Telopea at
his first outing.
He was so calm
and relaxed and
made me very
proud. Also great
bonding with
older buddy Red
Bluff Killarny
who was 1st
Pure Morgan
Gelding, Telopea
a respectable
3rd.”
The Part Bred results were equally pleasing. There was a
real mixture of secondary breeds in the part bred field, from
Thoroughbred to Friesian. In Best Presented, Whispering Pines
Ame’us and Kelly Gordan took out the honours. They, too, were
very successful at the last ANMS, so it was good to see these
results confirmed at this show. Kelly’s winning streak continued
with first place in the Ridden Part Bred Morgan Class. Well
done. The Supreme Champion Part Bred Morgan (Led Class)
was awarded to Georgia Hill and Silverline Ember, a mare bred
from Karenza Astra. Georgia has been unwell and it was a real
effort for her to come to the show. Well, this result certainly
boosted up her spirits.
Hodgson Park Telopea & Michelle Higgins
Jessica Mason: “Lovely day out to Melbourne Summer Royal
2015. Red Bluff Nakita was back to her usual lovely self and
had a super first time under saddle. Bunara Crimson Queenie
had her first big outing and the judge loved her! Said she held
her own with the big kids and had beautiful movement and
a big future ahead. Really excited to see how she grows and
to have her as my next riding horse in the future. We got to
catch up with some fellow Morgan people and see some lovely
new horses which we hadn’t seen before. All in all, a good day
out.”
It was a great day for everyone, and a great way to catch up with
all the news. The led classes started at 9am on Saturday morning,
which did involve some early rising, but there was then a good
two hour break before the ridden classes at 1.30 in the afternoon,
so we had plenty of time to warm up (and settle) our horses. We
shared the ring with the Friesian Horses, which meant that the
Morgan Part Bred, Mountain Creek Anton (with Friesian links),
certainly caught the attention of these competitors.
This is one show that I would encourage all Victorian Morgan
Red Bluff Nakita, Jessica Mason & Bunara Crimson Queenie
OVERSEAS NEWS
Holiday Compadre inducted into Morgan Show Horse Hall of Fame
Congratulations to Holiday Compadre on being inducted into
the Morgan Show Horse Hall of Fame.
A Morgan Horse of remarkable beauty, talent and heart, known
as the “Cowboy Dressage Horse” that Eitan [Beth-Halachmy]
dances to music with, Compadre is a horse for all horsemen and
women who simply love horses.
Like Santa Fe Renegade, he brought his ‘magic’ to thousands.
Compadre was a not a follower, he was a leader and he knew
it. He is a small horse, 14.2 hands but he had the charisma and
presence of a 16 hand horse. He was as big as he thought he
was and he thought he was VERY BIG!
Compadre was retired in 2002. He now lives with Ellen Di Bella
at Sunrise Morgans in Parker, Colorado.
1993 Western Pleasure World Championship
Holiday Compadre
(Carlyle Command x Holiday Temptress)
Holiday Compadre hosts a bounty of Western Working Morgans
on his pedigree. The Airacobra, Quietude, California King,
Chocolate etc. His accomplishments include winning (by
unanimous votes of the judging panel) the Morgan Western
Pleasure World Champion in 1993 and again in 1996! In 1994 he
was the Grand National Freestyle Reining Champion and Reserve
Champion in 1995! He is the epitome of Cowboy Dressage and
helped bring the Morgan Horse to the world’s attention.
Above: In Santa Barbara with Jim O'Connor (left) & Art Perry
Below: Eitan & Holiday Compadre's Western Pleasure World
Championship victory pass
With many National Championships to his name, Holiday
Compadre was family bred, raised and trained. He was the
‘reality’ of dreams for both Eitan and Debbie. This magnificent
young stallion put Eitan and his Cowboy Dressage on the map.
Compadre was the first of Eitan’s Cowboy Dressage horses and
Eitan will tell you that horse helped make him what he is today.
Remarkable, noble and honest, Compadre carried Eitan to many
memorable performances.
USEF Honors Three Morgan Women
The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) recently
honored three women from the Morgan community. Their honor
was announced at the USEF Pegasus Awards Dinner, which took
place on Friday, January 16, in Lexington, Kentucky, during the
2015 USEF Annual Meeting.
Ellen Di Bella was the recipient of the Walter B. Devereux
Sportsmanship Award. This annual award, given in memory of
Walter Bourchier Devereux III, is presented to the horseman or
horsewoman who personifies the ideals of the current sportsman’s
charter through commitment and dedication to the sport.
Out of the Archives
Anyone whose Morgan has Wawayanda Watch Out in its
pedigree also has this horse in the pedigree as Sealect of
Windcrest is the great grandsire of Watch Out.
This photo from the January/February 1960 issue of The
Morgan Horse magazine shows Sealect of Windcrest as
the Reserve Champion Stallion from the 1959 Mid Atlantic
Show.
Mary Woolverton received the Pegasus Medal of Honor. This
annual award recognizes individuals who have exhibited
outstanding service to horses and the sport, and who, through
their dedication, have attracted people to the sport and contributed
to horse sport by advancing its popularity.
Longtime Grand National & World Championship Morgan Horse
Show® manager, the late Fern Bittner, received the Honor Roll
of Distinguished Officials Award. This is awarded to retired
USEF licensed horse show officials who had outstanding and
influential careers officiating at competitions both large and
small, and whose officiating standards helped improve the
quality of show ring competition. Fern was also the recipient
of the annual Richard E. McDevitt Award of Merit, named for
the President of AHSA, awarded posthumously for meritorious
service to equestrian sport.
I found this lovely photo of a young Mary Woolverton in The Morgan
Horse magazine of April 1963. The caption reads: “Prince of Pride
(AMHR 11621 – PHBA 16905) Palomino Morgan Stallion. Winner of
the Open Palomino Stake Class at the 1963 Denver National Western
Stock Show. Prince placed in 6 out of 7 classes. Prince was shown at the
National Morgan Horse Show in Northampton last summer. Owned by
Mary Woolverton, Littleton, Colorado.” There are also many photos in
TMHs of the 1960s of the pair showjumping which they did successfully
as well as dressage, trail, costume, harness, western pleasure and regular
saddle classes. Newer members of MHAA might not be aware of the
contribution Mary made to the Association in its formative days, helping
guide our early steps.
