Cultural Exchange
I recently found myself surrounded by Taste of Life readers
and friends at one our English afternoon teas. The Chineselanguage
event is one of my favourites: Taste of Life hosts
Asian-Canadians in a European-inspired atmosphere much
like the first café salons of the 18th century. Back then, tea and
coffee became a vehicle for artistic and intellectual exchange.
Our event is a vehicle for cultural exchange, not to mention
high style and enjoyment, replete with fashion, cuisine, dance,
music, ceramic arts and costume. With a background in dance
and cultural studies, I didn’t mind doing a little soft shoe to
the 1936 song from Britain “When the Clock Strikes Four, Everything
Stops for Tea.” Sharing what’s close to our hearts, the
fun gems of our cultures, is what Taste of Life is all about.
Check out “Aromatic Atmosphere” on page 126.
Anastasia Lin is a brilliant beauty who’s shared her culture and
heart with the world for almost a decade and she’s only 23. I was
deeply touched to hear her quote the Declaration of Independence
from memory and tell me how those words inspired her
to help people in her native China and around the world who
struggle for freedom of thought and freedom of religion. She’s
an award-winning film star, round table participant for the Canadian
Office of Religious Freedom and Miss World Canada 2013
2nd Runner Up. The events of her life already resemble a fireworks
show. Read about them on page 42, “A Will Paves A Way.”
We’re very excited to bring you “Traditions to Trends,” our
cover story on page 60. Peter Gorman fosters a guild-like atmosphere
that nurtures artisans who produce reverse glass
paintings, chinoiserie, and antiqued mirrors. Luigi Esposito of
Oro Bianco Interior Design firm, London, says Gorman Studios
is unique in the world for producing hand-painted work on
a large scale. His clients relish the fact that the architectural
treasures Gorman Studios creates for them (tomorrow’s fine
antiques) are original and exclusively theirs.
Please send your thoughts on any of October’s articles to me
at brett@tasteoflifemag.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Brett Price, Managing Editor
