The ‘brick walling’ which surrounds the ‘Elephant and Howdah’ cartouche
is of interest. It seems Rothwell was in favour of such decoration as he
used it on most of the topographical prints for paper and plaster which he
made at Swansea; ‘Port and Bay of Swansea’ and ‘Briton Ferry near Neath
a seat of Lord Vernon’ are just two examples. The same ‘brick’ theme is
also to be found in the ‘Brick and Garland’ borders used with a number of
different Swansea patterns.
