‘PRECARIOUS CHINAMAN’ (Fig. 30)<br />
This pedestal bowl shows yet ano<strong>the</strong>r version of <strong>the</strong> pattern. Again it is<br />
quite deeply engraved giving strong lines of definition. The interior of <strong>the</strong><br />
bowl has ano<strong>the</strong>r ‘Fan’ border. The interior is inscribed ‘Tho,s Dale/<br />
Lambourn/1793’. The comma instead of a full stop suggests <strong>the</strong> hand<br />
written text belonging to <strong>the</strong> renowned Swansea ‘comma painter’.<br />
Rothwell was, of course, still working in Swansea in 1793, however this<br />
fact does not qualify as being his engraving and it is more likely to be<br />
done ‘in <strong>the</strong> manner of Rothwell’.<br />
