Holy Rosary School has just completed
two years of self-study and long-range
planning that culminated in a visit from
a team of educators from the Minnesota
Nonpublic School Accrediting Association
in early April. The Accreditation
Team Chair expressed her thanks for
the wonderful hospitality the team received
during the visit and shared the
following thoughts; “The overall atmosphere at Holy Rosary
was one of ‘family.’ This was not only shared by parents,
students and staff, it was evident in the lived experience
at the school. The children helped each other and
were gracious to the visitors. When the team asked the
children about the discipline policy, frequently the response
was, “It is one of respect, we are to respect one
another.” We also saw this attitude of respect in the
school staff. The principal and teachers were willing to
change schedules at a moment’s notice, and they worked
together to ensure the needs of the team were addressed.”
Academic excellence is important to our mission and the
team noted, “Parents shared their praises for the school.
They sited how well prepared their children are when they
move on to the high school.” The results of the report are
available for review in the principal’s office. We thank our
parish family for the support of Catholic education in Detroit
Lakes. We have 156 students in pre-school through
8th grade being taught by 13 teachers. All parents (99
families) are active in the school in various ways.

A little background on our new
Pastor. Monsignor Tim McGee was
born and raised in Minot, North Dakota,
and graduated from Bishop Ryan
High School. He later attended the
National College at Rapid City, South
Dakota, where he earned a Bachelor’s
Degree in Business Administration.
Later he attended the San Francisco
College of Mortuary Science and became a licensed
funeral director. He worked for several funeral directors
in western North Dakota and moved to East Grand
Forks in 1981. In 1984 he entered the seminary at
Hales Corners, Wisconsin, to study for the priesthood
for the Diocese of Crookston. He was ordained by
Bishop Balke in 1987. His first assignment was serving
as associate pastor at St. Phillip’s Parish in Bemidji and
in 1988 he became associate pastor of Sacred Heart
Parish in East Grand Forks. In 1990 Bishop Balke
named him pastor of Sacred Heart. In 2001 he was appointed
pastor of St. Bernard’s in Thief River Falls.
Monsignor also serves on the Finance Council, the
Priests’ Council, and is Director of Cemeteries for the
Diocese of Crookston.
After 15 years, Fr. Jerry Rogers left
Holy Rosary Catholic Community on
June 30th. He is continuing his faith
journey as the new pastor of St. Mary’s
Indian Mission at Red Lake, MN. We
will miss him and will always remember
everything he did for us! Good
luck, Fr. Jerry, we will miss you!
Karena King, Chelsey Wirtz and Anthony Averbeck are the winners
of the 2009 Percy and Winifred Stary Scholarship Program.
They all attended Holy Rosary School. Anthony Averbeck was
awarded $5,700 for the second year by meeting the scholarship requirements
while attending the University of Minnesota in Pre Architecture
Pre-Major. Karena King was awarded $5,700 by meeting
the requirements during her second year at Minnesota State University-Moorhead
in Math and Science. Chelsey Wirtz will be awarded
$4,000 at the end of her first year of college if she continues to meet
the requirements. She is attending the University of Minnesota in
Pre-Medicine. To apply for this scholarship, applicants must have
been a Holy Rosary student who has completed at least three years
of attendance, maintained at least a B average in high school and are pursuing a technical, science or medical degree or
certificate. Other careers may be taken into consideration. Applications are available in January. Candidates are encouraged
to apply while in their senior year of high school, although later applications will be honored. Please call or write
the Holy Rosary Development Office if interested in this scholarship.

Marathon for Nonpublic Education still going strong!
From start to finish, everyone had a wonderful time on Sunday,
October 4, 2009. It was a little chilly and the rain held off until the
very end. You couldn’t miss us. We were a florescent lime green
blur going around the lake. For 37 years our students have been
seeking pledges to help raise money for our school. The adult who
earned the most money for our school is Lillian Maruska. She
earned close to $1800. She has been participating in our marathon
for many years, ever since her children attended Holy Rosary
School. She writes and calls all of her family and friends asking for
pledges and in return says prayers for them. She isn’t able to bike
around the lake anymore. Lillian is a wonderful role model alumni
parent. Taryn Posch, sixth grade, earned the most money in the
school, $1545, and wins the electric scooter. Second place goes to Sierra Braukmann, eighth grade, $1371, wins the Wii
Balance Board Kit. Third prize goes to Benjamin Thompson, eighth grade, $1333, who wins the popular Rip Stik, a new
kind of skate board. Of course there are prizes for every level, which really excites and motivates the students for the
cause. The winning class that earned the most money based on participation is the 8th grade class. They win the traveling
trophy and a free fun day at school. The kids get really excited and thrilled to bike all eleven miles around Big then Little
Detroit Lake. We have a new school mascot the last couple of years. You probably remember the old mascot, the Holy
Rosary “Phantom”. Now, we are honored with the presence of Cardinal Curly, our new mascot. He is a fun, lovable, big
red bird. He entertains the kids whenever he appears out of his nest. Our marathon total is $25,750. The marathon is fun
and one of our biggest fundraiser. Hopefully, our 40th Annual marathon in 3 years will raise $40,000. One can only
dream. Thank you, everyone, for your support!

There is a peaceful, busy, graceful lady here who
fills us with joy when she sings with her clear soprano
voice. She is our Sr. Patrice Eblen, and here
is what she has to say:
“Hi, I’m Sister Patrice Eblen and I have served
here at Holy Rosary for 11 years as Director of
Worship. I grew up on a farm near Hillsboro,
North Dakota, in a family of eight children. My
career choice after high school was to study to be a nurse. God
seemed to have other plans for me and so eventually I left nursing
to enter the Benedictine Sisters of Crookston, MN. There I pursued
studies as an elementary teacher and class room music
teacher. Eventually, I left the classroom to do what I always
loved to do—music and liturgy. After more study, I entered the
world of pastoral administration in the parishes of Ada, Halstad,
Georgetown and Twin Valley. Following the 1997 flood, I left
those parishes to come to Holy Rosary in Detroit Lakes to serve
again in music and liturgy. Working in the area of music and liturgy
brings great blessings and challenges. It includes planning
and practicing for every liturgy from the weekday liturgies with
the children to anointing liturgies, funerals, weddings, all the celebrations
of the sacraments and every Sunday and feast day of the
church year. Today, I’m the only Sister serving in this parish as
members of communities steadily grow older and are unable to
serve in ministry. I consider this work a blessing and I thank my
God for the awesome work and marvelous privilege to work with
so many in this parish.” Thanks, Sister Patrice, for all you do!

THE CATHOLIC AID ASSOCIATION:
On April 29, 2009, Mike Bredeck, regional manager of the
Catholic Aid Association presented Holy Rosary School with a
check for $5,000. This is the second installment of a $15,000 donation
for the remodeling and restoration of the school. Catholic
Aid’s vision statement reflects the tone of this great organization:
to extend the Roman Catholic Faith by supporting Catholic organizations
that do. These include Catholic missions, schools, parishes,
and pro-life efforts, to name a few. Founded in 1878, Catholic Aid
is celebrating its 131st year. They have a long history of providing
a complete line of life insurance and annuity products to members
and enjoy being a stable and strong association with nearly 75,000
members in the Upper Midwest.
Only this summer, CAA was rechartered at Holy Rosary Catholic
Community. Join your fellow Catholics in 2009 during the fall
Membership Drive—purchase life insurance or annuities to become
a part of something more.

Interlude on April 24th. Friends
entertained us with their talent,
dinner was delicious, the auction
items were rare and enticing and
the famous “Front Fenders”
ended the evening with two
hours of fun-filled music for
dancing. Robert Kramer, “The
Life of the Party” decorator,
turned the Speak Easy into an
enchanting ballroom with the
right décor for the event. What a wonderfully fun evening!
The net profit was just over $23,000 to help fund the music and
art programs. We are blessed to have such caring and supportive
friends and family who enrich our programs for the future
of our children. Stay tuned for the next SI on April 23, 2010.

What is Scrip?
When Holy Rosary members purchase
Scrip, they’re purchasing negotiable
gift certificates that are used
just like cash. The Scrip is issued by
the national and local retailers where
many families already shop. These
merchants want to support nonprofit
organizations, and in return
ask you to support them by shopping
with Scrip at their stores. Members
can use scrip to purchase everyday
expenses like food, clothing, and
other essentials, and with every purchase,
they earn revenue for Holy Rosary.
How Scrip generates
revenue for our
school?
Because Scrip is purchased with cash
up front, the participating retailers
offer a substantial discount. Our organization
buys Scrip from the Great
Lakes Scrip Center and local retailers
at a discount, and re-sells the
certificates at a full face value. The
bulk of the discount—from two to
twenty five percent or more is retained
by Holy Rosary as revenue.

Families who purchase Scrip certificates
actively support the retailers
who participate in this program.
The reason is simple… they know
that buying from a Scrip participating
retailer provides a steady source
of revenue for their church and
school. Any business can join
our program.
