Course Format: Lessons will consist of both theory and supervised hands-on practical work. Class time will include a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and cooperative learning. However, students will also be working towards building a clientele base and will be required to recruit models to work on in order to develop and expand their skills. Learning in a safe and clean environment will be mandatory and enforced. Course Resources: Textbook: Salon Fundamentals Workbook: Salon Fundamentals Additional Resources: Milady Standard textbook and handouts pertinent to each outcome. Course Outcomes: Students will acquire the following knowledge and skills during each course of study; Basics of Nail Technology (ESN2AT) Orientation, communication, and professional image Salon safety (sterilization, sanitation, WHMIS, etc…) Anatomy and physiology of the hands, arm, and feet Use of technology tools Manicure & Pedicure (<strong>ESN2BT</strong>) Water and hot oil manicures Massage techniques Specialty treatments Toe cures and pedicures Nail art Course Policies: 1. All SRSS policies and procedures apply to this course 2. Regular and punctual attendance, effective use of time, and participation is expected just as it is required in the workforce and will form part of the grade (up to 10%). 3. All students are expected to dress according to the rules laid out by the Apprenticeship Board and under the direction of the teacher. 4. If inappropriately dressed, students will not be allowed to work in the salon. 2
Equipment and Supplies: The following items will be mandatory for completion of the course: Full black scrubs Black soft sole closed toe shoes $40.00 Study Guide Fee for Nail 1&2 Each student will be assigned an in school tool kit, which they will be responsible for. These kits are to remain in school at all times. Students are encouraged to purchase their own personal kit to use at home. These kits will be sold at a student price and will cost approximately $200.00. Please note that student kits will include just the basic supplies. Students will also need the following items: 2 three ring binders Pencil crayons, makers, and scissors for projects Assessment: Nail Technology is divided into two parts. In each part students must receive a final mark of a minimum of 70% in both the theory and practical work in order to be eligible for the apprenticeship program. Term marks will be graded on assignments, individual and group projects, chapter tests, practical applications, attendance, and professionalism. A written and practical exam will be given at the end of each semester. A total of 400 hours is required over both parts of the Nail Technology course. Any hours missed per term must be made up before the end of the semester. Students are expected to submit their assignments on or before the due dates. Late assignments will require documentation or students must make prior arrangements with the teacher.
