CSC’s High Performance Computing Center of Excellence connects their customers to the leading edge of computational
technology, and delivers innovative HPC solutions that encompass compute engines, storage systems, and network
infrastructure. With twenty years of HPC experience, CSC provides industry-leading best practices to five significant HPC
facilities. CSC specializes in solutions architecture, center operations, and professional services for scientific applications
including code migration, performance optimization, and benchmarking.
The Center’s currency in technology, application of technologies, and operation of computational centers with a focus on
total cost of ownership gives customers cost-effective approaches to reach their computing goals.
The Center’s offerings are built on a proven service management philosophy that embodies a partnership approach to client
engagements. Clients are able to concentrate on their core computing challenges without having to worry about the daily
operational management of their HPC installations. Exposing and refining this philosophy allows CSC to leverage the
benefits of its common approach across many industries.
The Center offers total solutions that include compute engines, storage solutions, network topology, operations, training and
application support. In terms of system design, the Center offers a comprehensive integrated technical solution that includes
the compute engine’s storage system, system operation and tuning, scientific visualization, high-speed networking, code
migration and modernization, system acquisition and facility design. In addition, the Center provides “pay-per-use” Grid
Computing services, outsourcing, user services and application support. The Center ensures technology currency and strict
functional procedures for each of these areas.

CSC’s HPC staff has extensive experience in maximizing the overall
effectiveness of an HPC applications portfolio.The staff advises clients on:
• Capacity planning & job scheduling
• Performance measurement and identification of optimal HPC and
Grid technologies
• Storage optimization: cache, system memory, virtual memory and I/O
• Parallel processing: distributed memory and shared memory optimization
• Operating Systems, compilers and loop optimization
• Enhanced parallelism, compiler directives, threads and message passing
• Mathematical libraries, mathematical kernels and algorithms

CONTENT
The Center is responsible for managing two U.S. Department of Defense Major Shared Resource Centers, one in Vicksburg,
Mississippi, for the Engineers Research and Development Center for the Corps of Engineers, and the other for the U.S. Air
Force at the Aeronautical Systems Center in Dayton, Ohio. The Center also manages the two largest NASA HPC centers at
NASA Ames and NASA Goddard, as well as Grid Computing services based in Chicago, Illinois and Maidstone, England for
Financial Institutions and other CSC clients world-wide.
