On‐air skills <strong>and</strong> studio equipment skills checklist:<br />

DJ/trainer please initial <strong>and</strong> date:<br />

_________ Underst<strong>and</strong>ing signal chain: Discuss, locate signal chain equipment in head end rack, <strong>and</strong><br />

review with trainee.<br />

_________ Mixing board <strong>and</strong> sources: Identify major controls <strong>and</strong> displays on the mixing board <strong>and</strong> their<br />

uses including faders, gain controls, mute <strong>and</strong> solo buttons, main LED’s <strong>and</strong> peak LED’s..<br />

_________ Demonstrate proper microphone technique. Discuss mic levels compared to signal levels.<br />

_________ Discuss <strong>and</strong> demonstrate how different material has inherently different levels (hot signals vs.<br />

weak signals).<br />

_________Discuss distortion <strong>and</strong> peak output levels.<br />

_________ Discuss <strong>and</strong> demonstrate the use of the “cue” channel.<br />

_________Demonstrate cueing up a record in preparation of playback. Demonstrate a slip cue<br />

_________Demonstrate proper outputs levels <strong>and</strong> verify the trainee is aware of <strong>and</strong> maintains appropriate<br />

_________The Gentner: Demonstrate its correct use. Make a cell phone call or call from the fax line <strong>and</strong><br />

test the trainee’s ability to bring up the phone <strong>and</strong> talk with the caller in “cue” mode. Show the trainee<br />

around the OTIS program <strong>and</strong> how to switch back <strong>and</strong> forth between OTIS <strong>and</strong> the studio computer.<br />

_________Demonstrate to the trainee how to find the NWS weather report. Make sure they can find it<br />

quickly from a situation where OTIS is displayed on the studio LCD monitor.<br />

_________EAS system DJ/trainer <strong>and</strong> trainees read this part of the training manual over <strong>and</strong> find the pink<br />

EAS binder in the studio.
