"Little Russia" is another name for the
Ukraine and the subtitle to the Second Symphony
refers to two Ukrainian folk melodies
used in the symphony, one in the first movement
and one in the last movement. It is the
last movement, Finale, that has made this
symphony so popular. It begins with a spirited
Ukrainian tune which is a dance theme in the
major key. It is like a ceremonial introduction
followed by variations. Then comes a softer
second theme followed by a development
section which contrasts the two. It ends with a
joyous recapitulation and coda.

Bach was the greatest organist of his time,
and he made his living by writing music for the
church. He did, however, write some nonreligious
cantatas. They were pieces written to
entertain and flatter the princes and electors at
their weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and
other ceremonies. These secular cantatas are
miniature operas without costumes and stage
