"Sheep May Safely Graze", from Bach's Hunting Cantata, evokes a feeling of heavenly peace and a musical picture of shepherds quietly tending their flocks. It creates a scene of peace on earth for the Christmas season. The Mass in B Minor is one of the sublime works in sacred art. It is considered Bach's most significant composition in the field of sacred music. He worked on it for nearly twenty-five years. It consists of 25 substantial choral and solo pieces and is brought to a glorious finish by "Dona Nobis Pacem". "The Heavens Are Telling" from The Creation by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809) Haydn grew up as an Austrian peasant, but through his musical talent rose to great fame. In the 18th Century, the common people had access to church music and street music, but "classical" music was reserved for the wealthy families, who hired their own orchestras and Kapellmeisters to direct and write the music. Haydn was already a celebrated musician when he became Kapellmeister for the Esterhazys. He enjoyed a good salary, was assured performances of his compositions, and had an orchestra and choir at his beck and call for experimentation. He served Prince Nicolaus Esterhazy for 28 years. When the old prince died in 1790, he was succeeded by his son Prince Anton. Anton did not share his father'S love for music and so dismissed the members of the orchestra. He kept Haydn on salary but left him free to do what he wanted. During this time Haydn went to London where he was a great success. It was here that he helped define the evolving symphony. While in England he was commissioned to write a new opera, six symphonies, and 20 smaller compositions. After 5 years the 63-yearold composer left England, not to retire but to begin a new musical venture-writing choral music. Prince Anton Esterhazy had died and his successor, Nicolaus II, called Haydn back to Austria to restore the orchestra to its former glory. Haydn would spend 15 years serving this Esterhazy prince who would be the hardest of all to satisfy. The Prince professed a love of mUSiC,but not especially for Haydn's. He preferred the music of some minor composers but hired the famous Haydn as his Kapellmeister to make 14
himself the envy of many other potentates. The work Haydn did for his narrow-minded patron was not very satisfying. Before he left London, Haydn said: " I want to write a work that will give permanent fame to my name in the world." Haydn was convinced that an oratorio would do just that. When Haydn asked his friend Barthelemon to suggest a suitable subject for an oratorio, he pointed to the Bible and exclaimed: " There! Take that, and begin at the beginning." And so he began composing The Creation. The work progressed slowly because he wanted it to last a long time, and the years he spent on it were some of the happiest in his life. It premiered in Vienna and soon was popular in London and Paris as well. It was an attraction for many years and proved to be quite a financial success .
