in May of last year, and thought it would be
a great opportunity to develop some much
needed contacts in corporate Calgary.
QWhy did you register for a mentor?
ANetworking was the primary driving
force behind my decision to register for a
mentor. I believe that having somebody
who has been in your shoes can offer a
great deal of insight to the industry. Tracy
has helped me a lot by providing me with
tips for networking; she also takes the time
to forward me online newsletters that she
receives.
QWhat about the program would you say
has had the most value for you?
AThe relationship that I have developed with
Tracy. We get along very well, and have
even discovered that we know a few people
in common. Tracy even took the time to
help me perfect my résumé and let me
know about the assistance available at the
Career Center at the University of Calgary.
QHas the program helped you to affirm your
interest in Human Resources?
AYes, my mentor has given me insight
as to what her job entails. She has
provided me with information about
the role that Human Resources has in
a company and her reason for choosing
to work in HR. Tracy has worked in
alternative areas as well and therefore
has a good grasp of other fields of work.
This diverse background has enabled me to
better understand why Tracy chose
HR as her field.
QWhat would you say to other students
considering this program?
AI wholeheartedly recommend this program
to any student who is feeling lost, or is
lacking any type of guidance.

I understand that deciding what programs
to take and what area to concentrate in
is a crucial decision; with a mentor you can
gain a more clear understanding about the
options available and the pros and cons of
each. The Mentorship Program is also a
great way to learn how to network and how
to conduct oneself in a business setting.
QWhat would you say to alumni who are
thinking about becoming mentors?
AIf given the opportunity to become
a mentor I would strongly recommend
becoming one; I believe that it is
a rewarding experience for both the mentor
and the mentee. Having Tracy as a mentor
has helped me a lot; I think the fact that
she was in my shoes at one time really
helped me relate to her.
The individual that receives this help
will truly appreciate the fact that someone
is willing to take time to offer them
guidance; as I am.
Movers and Shakers
Stephens Allan (BComm 1967) was recognised
by the Chartered Accountants of Alberta with
a lifetime achievement award in recognition
of his contributions to the profession and his
community.
Lindsay Holms (BComm 1976) was recently
appointed to the Queen’s Counsel in Alberta.
In 2007, Erik Johnson (BComm 2002),
presented at the Bermuda Captive Insurance
Conference, was elected as a Chartered
Insurance Practitioner, completed his Diploma in
Risk Management and was married to fellow U
of C alumnus Justin Creasey.
On January 25, 2008, Robert Schmidt
(EMBA 2001) became the first Canadian certified
to complete the Blue Ocean Strategy workshop
in New York, NY.
Myron Weber was awarded Associate
Professor Emeritus status at the University of
Calgary.
On March 1, 2008 Roger J. Gillott (BComm
1990) became a Partner at the Toronto law
firm Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, practicing
Construction Litigation.
