News from Haskayne Haskayne says Thank you to Donors Students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of Calgary’s business community recently gathered together to recognize the generous contributions made to the Haskayne School of Business by its corporate, alumni and individual donors. The 2008 Donor and Award Recipient Recognition Event, held on April 2, also celebrated the success of Haskayne’s student scholarship recipients. Haskayne’s Dean, Dr. Leonard Waverman welcomed the crowd of nearly 100 and provided an update on some of the school’s current funding priorities, which include scholarships, the expansion of the Career Centre, international exchanges, research centres of excellence, upgrading teaching spaces and adding additional professorships. He emphasized the importance of the role played by corporate, individual and alumni gifts and remarked on the pride that individuals feel in investing in the Haskayne School of Business. Following Dr. Waverman’s address, Barry Yuzwa, Senior Director of Audit Services and Internal Controls spoke to the group on behalf of Enbridge Inc., a long-standing supporter of Haskayne School of Business initiatives. Yuzwa specifically outlined the success of the Haskayne Career Centre’s Enbridge Mentorship Program, which has been supporting the growth and professional development of Haskayne students since 2004. Next, Trevor Sawatzky (BComm ‘04) spoke on behalf of alumni donors. Last year, just three years out of University and at the age of 24, Trevor established the Trevor Sawatzky Scholarship - an endowed gift open to Haskayne students who embrace participation in student club activities as part of their L to R: Dr. Leonard Waverman (Dean) with Aarnoud (BComm ‘96) and Monica (BComm ‘95) van Weelderen and Dr. Gordon Sick, Professor & Area Chair, Finance. Trevor’s inspiring message centred on his personal journey as he learned the value of money and the definition of wealth, encouraging everyone to “give until it hurts,” stating that “your impact will be larger than you can imagine”. The event wrapped up with James Barrand, an MBA student and this year’s recipient of the Terry Douglas Memorial Graduate Scholarship. James provided his entertaining account of student life, emphasizing the importance of financial resources in student success. He thanked all the donors who have given to the school and enriched the student experience for so many at Haskayne. Because of the generosity of its donors, Haskayne can ensure that its students have access to financial support and the networks they need, that the leaders of tomorrow have relevant, lifelong learning opportunities and that its faculty can build on the school’s foundation of knowledge to provide quality education. Photo by Marnie Burkhart 3-Year CSR Pilot Project Finds a Home at Haskayne Good for Business is a Calgary based initiative housed at the Haskayne School of Business that aims to bring together small and medium enterprises (SMEs), community organizations, entrepreneurs and individuals who want to make a difference and understand the important role that business can play in taking care of our communities and the world we live in. The path to making an impact often takes encouragement, collaboration, partnership, education and access to information. The Good for Business initiative aims to be the change agent that helps Small and Medium enterprises take those first steps. Alumni News Haskayne Alumni among Calgary’s Top 40 Under 40 Seventeen young leaders from the University of Calgary community, including five alumni from the Haskayne School of Business were recently named to CalgaryInc Magazine’s annual list of the Top 40 Calgarians under the age of 40. The Top 40 Under 40 is an annual list featuring young business and community leaders who are excelling in their careers, are giving back to the community and who through personal and professional efforts, are raising the profile of the City of Calgary.
