News from Haskayne Congratulations to the Haskayne School of Business Graduating Class of 2008! This June, the Haskayne School of Business was very pleased to welcome more than 500 new graduates to the alumni family. So now that you have your degree, wouldn’t it be nice if your school helped you to use it to its full potential? Here at the Alumni Office we are dedicated to creating real value for you as you move forward in the world of business. We consider ourselves a partner in helping you to build your career and are committed to giving you the tools you need to succeed. We are here to help you build lifelong relationships. Haskayne School of Business grads are business leaders, political leaders, industry pioneers, movers and shakers. As a graduate, you can plug into this network at any time. The first step to staying connected and keeping informed is to visit the University of Calgary’s Net Community website at www. netcommunity.ucalgary.ca. Once there, you will be able to register for events online, manage your communication preferences, create your online profile and update your contact information, search for friends and classmates using the Alumni Member Directory and use the Class Notes section to write and read notes from other alumni. Haskayne alumni are highly involved – they enjoy coming back and helping out in everything from mentoring students to sitting on advisory committees. The Alumni Office is the “hub” that brings alumni together with students, and with each other. Our purpose is to help you stay connected to your school, showcase your successes and provide a bridge between your peers, fellow students, faculty and the business community. Call or email us at: 403.220.2048 alumni@haskayne.ucalgary.ca www.haskayne.ucalgary.ca/alumni Long Standing Professor Malcolm Munro Retires After his 33 year career as an outstanding contributor to the Haskayne School of Business, Professor Malcolm Munro officially retired on August 31, 2007. Munro graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a BComm in 1969 and then earned an MSc and PhD in Management Information Systems at the University of Minnesota. He joined the University of Calgary in 1974 and established the business school’s first courses and programs in MIS. He served as Area chair for MIS over a number of years, Associate Dean (Research) from 1991 until 1996, Associate Dean (Planning) from 1997 until 1999, and was the first director of the PhD program. From 2000 through 2006, Malcolm served as vice president of the Association for Information Systems (AIS), the principal MIS academic association. Malcom’s significant contributions to his field in teaching, research and service were formally recognized when he was inducted as an AIS Fellow in December 2007, only the second Canadian to be so honoured. Malcolm made a very particular contribution to the Haskayne School of Business’ building, Scurfield Hall, which opened in 1986. During both the design and construction phases, he served as the Chair of the Building Committee and together with Dean Mike Maher met with state of the art architects, incorporating their latest design ideas into the planning. The Haskayne School of Business would like to recognize Malcolm Munro for his exemplary career, tireless commitment to his faculty, colleagues and students, and his many outstanding accomplishments. 6 Alumni Connections
