2.4 EDUCATION<br />

The <strong>Guam</strong> Public School System is a single unified<br />

school district consisting of grades Kindergarten<br />

through 12 with twenty-five elementary schools,<br />

seven middle schools, four high schools and an alternative<br />

school that serve over 30,000 students.<br />

There are 21 private schools, a community college<br />

and four-year accredited university on <strong>Guam</strong> which<br />

are patterned after school systems in the continental<br />

United States. Public schools are accredited by<br />

the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.<br />

2.5 HEALTHCARE<br />

The <strong>Guam</strong> Memorial Hospital's bed capacity is currently<br />

208 beds; 159 acute care beds, 16 bassinettes,<br />

and 33 long-term beds located in its Skilled<br />

Nursing Facility.<br />

Judicial System<br />

<strong>Business</strong>es established on <strong>Guam</strong> have a distinct advantage<br />

over others in the region in that they enjoy<br />

the protection of the U.S. judicial system. Should a<br />

business encounter legal disputes, it can rely on<br />

<strong>Guam</strong>’s local court system as a means for resolving<br />

the issue. <strong>Guam</strong>’s local court system consists of the<br />

Supreme Court of <strong>Guam</strong> and the Superior Court of<br />

<strong>Guam</strong>. The entire system is run by the Unified Judiciary<br />

Committee, which is composed of the three<br />

justices of the Supreme Court and two judges of<br />

the Superior Court. <strong>Guam</strong>’s judges and justices are<br />

appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the<br />

The hospital provides all customary acute care services<br />

and certain specialty services. These include<br />

adult and pediatric medical services; inpatient and<br />

outpatient surgery; intensive care (neonatal, pediatric<br />

and adult); skilled nursing care; laboratory<br />

and comprehensive blood bank services; radiology,<br />

nuclear medicine and CT scan diagnostic services;<br />

pharmacy, respiratory care; renal dialysis;<br />

physical, occupational, speech, language pathology<br />

and recreational therapy; dietetic services and<br />

24-hour emergency services.<br />

Other modalities available on site include MRI and<br />

a catheterization lab. The hospital currently has<br />

the capability of tele-radiology for CT scans to allow<br />

discussion of cases with Hawaii physicians via<br />

a tele-network. Cardiac diagnostic studies can also<br />

be performed at GMH then reviewed by a cardiac<br />

intervention list or surgeon for possible treatment.<br />

GMH is presently certified by the Centers for Medicare<br />

and Medicaid Services (CMMS) formerly<br />

known as the Health Care Financing Administration<br />

(HCFA), and its Blood Bank is accredited by the<br />

American Association of Blood Bank (AABB). Its<br />

mammography machine is also certified by the<br />

American College of Radiology.<br />
