The policy thrust for <strong>2009</strong> is to strengthen management systems to enable the provision <strong>of</strong><br />

the highest quality health care with emphasis on maternal, neonatal and child health and<br />

deliver excellence in teaching and research.<br />

Priority Activities<br />

• Initiate activities to improve maternal, neonatal and child health care outcomes in the<br />

hospital<br />

• Increase outreach programmes with emphasis on maternal and child health care.<br />

• Develop functional referral criteria and protocols for the management <strong>of</strong> emergency<br />

cases<br />

• Develop a multidisciplinary operational research capacity<br />

• Continue to review the financial management systems and adopt modern ways for<br />

revenue mobilization and utilization.<br />

• Improve on dietetic and catering services in the Hospital<br />

• Review all existing network systems, upgrade ICT infrastructure and introduce an<br />

Integrated Hospital Management System (IHMS)<br />

Expected results<br />

• Institutional maternal, child and neonatal mortality rates reduced by 5%.<br />

• Outreach activities increased<br />

• Clear guidelines and standard referral procedures for the reception and management<br />

<strong>of</strong> patients established.<br />

• Joint programmes with the College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Science on research activities, appraisal<br />

and evaluation <strong>of</strong> research findings established.<br />

• Efficient financial management system for costing, revenue collection and transparent<br />

and efficient procurement system put in place<br />

• Reduction in the time taken to retrieve patients’ and other records needed for service<br />

delivery and management decision-making.<br />

6.2.3.2. KOMFO ANOKYE TEACHING HOSPITAL<br />

Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is mandated to provide advanced clinical health services,<br />

training <strong>of</strong> undergraduate and postgraduate medical pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and undertake research into<br />

emerging health issues in Ghana. In pursuit <strong>of</strong> this mandate, Komfo Anokye Teaching<br />

Hospital strives to become a centre <strong>of</strong> excellence <strong>of</strong> international standard by 2015.<br />

Despite investments to improve service delivery <strong>of</strong> the hospital, the expected results spelt out<br />

in the hospital’s strategic plan have not been fully achieved. This is to a large extent due to<br />

the inability <strong>of</strong> the hospital to secure funding to implement certain activities in the plan.<br />
