The patient takes the first dose <strong>of</strong><br />
Artesunate-Amodiaquine on day 1. Advise<br />
client to:<br />
-Continue iron tablets<br />
-Consume iron-rich foods<br />
-Use ITNs and other preventive measures<br />
-Take analgesics, if needed to lower the body<br />
temperature<br />
-Record relevant in<strong>for</strong>mation on Maternal<br />
Record Book.<br />
Continue Artesunate- Amodiaquine on days 2<br />
and 3<br />
Ensure that;<br />
o The client knows the danger signs and advises her to return to the facility <strong>for</strong><br />
a follow-up visit after treatment is complete or if her condition worsens.<br />
o IPT schedule is followed if it has previously been started.<br />
o IPT schedule is started at the next visit, if she has not previously received it.<br />
4.4a: RECOGNIZING COMPLICATED MALARIA IN PREGNANT WOMEN<br />
<strong>Malaria</strong> may be uncomplicated or complicated. Although uncomplicated malaria is easily<br />
treated, complicated malaria may be life-threatening and there<strong>for</strong>e, needs to be promptly<br />
recognized and treated.<br />
Signs and symptoms <strong>of</strong> complicated malaria<br />
• Dark coloured urine<br />
• Drowsiness or coma<br />
• Jaundice<br />
• Inability to stand or support oneself<br />
• Persistent vomiting<br />
• Temperature over 39 o C and above<br />
• Anaemia<br />
• Poor urine output<br />
• Difficulty in breathing<br />
