STEP/TASK<br />

6. Listen to the woman/family and respond to their concerns and<br />

questions.<br />

7. If she has had any <strong>of</strong> the complaints listed under Step 4 and 5<br />

above or has experienced fits, suspect complicated malaria<br />

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION<br />

8. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry with a<br />

clean, dry cloth or air dry.<br />

9. Per<strong>for</strong>m a physical examination:<br />

• Does the woman look abnormally drowsy/sleepy?<br />

• Check the body temperature. Does she have a fever (above<br />

37.5 º C)?<br />

• Check blood pressure, pulse and respiration rate.<br />

• Check the eyes:<br />

– Pallor inside the eyelids<br />

– Yellowness <strong>of</strong> the eyes<br />

– Do the eyes appear sunken?<br />

• Check the mouth <strong>for</strong>:<br />

– Dryness<br />

– Pallor <strong>of</strong> tongue/mucous membranes<br />

– Bleeding from the gums<br />

• Check the legs <strong>for</strong> swelling (oedema)<br />

• Check the skin <strong>for</strong>:<br />

– Dryness<br />

– Looseness<br />

– Spontaneous bleeding<br />

10. If the woman is attending routine antenatal clinic, complete other<br />

ANC tasks.<br />
