• Cover doors and windows with wire or nylon mesh/nets to prevent mosquitoes from<br />

entering the house.<br />

• Avoid going outside after dark or when out in the evening:<br />

o Wear protective clothing that covers the arms and legs.<br />

o Apply chemical mosquito repellent cream on exposed skin surfaces.<br />

• Use mosquito coils that release smoke (particularly when sitting outdoors). The smoke<br />

keeps mosquitoes away or kills them when they fly through it.<br />

• Spray rooms with insecticide be<strong>for</strong>e going to bed every evening. Because the sprays are<br />

only effective <strong>for</strong> a few hours, this method should be used in combination with other<br />

measures, such as screening doors and windows.<br />

• Physically kill mosquitoes in the house by swatting them.<br />

• Manage the environment by ensuring that breeding sites <strong>of</strong> the anopheles mosquito are<br />

eliminated or reduced.<br />

How to use the manual<br />

This manual has been written <strong>for</strong> the purpose <strong>of</strong> training antenatal care providers in IPT. The<br />

manual has five units, which will take 20 hours to complete. Each unit has a number <strong>of</strong> hours<br />

assigned to it and it is expected that trainers will spend 18 hours on the 5 modules and 2 hours<br />

on the introduction and to conduct a pre-test and post-test.<br />
