HOOK & BULLET by Jim lola OUTDOOR LIFE - THEN AND Now The oldest "Outdoor Life" magazine that I own is dated November 1921. The front cover is a simple painting of a boy scout at camp. I look through it once in a great while, usually when the events of the modern day world make me feel I was born a hundred years too late. I somehow find it reassuring that a lot of what I see in that old magazine is still pretty much the same today. The format, the hunting and fishing stories, and the ads in the back of the magazine are similar to what you would find in 1999. Of course, the pictures are all black and white, and the pages have a dull finish - not at all as slick as today's publication. In fact, one photo of a hunting dog boasts "taken from a Kodak negative". Many of the manufacturers of sporting goods advertised are still in existence today - Evinrude, Harley-Davidson, Heinz 57 Varieties, Marble gun cleaning accessories, Duxbak, BSA air riffles, Dowagiac/Heddon lures, Filson, Smith & Wesson and Colt. There is an article about Sam Colt in this issue that mentions when he died in 1862, 1500 Colt workmen marched in mourning; quite a tribute. Manufacturers that have disappeared include Bristol Steel Fishing Rods, Fox Puttees (a type of gaiter), Calle of Detroit rowboat motors, Tractor Train Co. of Los Angeles - maker of Moore Transmissions for Fords (an off-road trans.), Parker Bros. shotguns, and Dent's Conditioning Pills for rundown unthrifty dogs recovering from mange and other illnesses. You can buy a reconditioned Springfield Mauser for $16.50, pimple cream, an auto-bed for camping, or a Wilbur shotgun peep sight for wingshooting that looks similar to products that are "new" today, and the typical guided hunting trip. There are featured articles about the Selkirk Mountains of the Canadian Rockies, Rediscovered Trout Waters (in 1921) and Fly Rod Plugs for Trout, among many others. The idea about small fly rod plugs is one that is probably ripe for reinvention; maybe I'll give it a try. Well enough for now, I think I'll relax by listening to some oldies. CORR-OLIVER BUCK POOL The 1998 Rifle Buck Pool Resulted in a Three-Way-Tie; the winners are: • Chris Burns • Russell Graaf • Conrad Pecile All three men bagged eight-point bucks and will be enjoying venison steaks on the grill.
