PhD Prize<br />

THE BPS Division of <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Exercise</strong><br />

<strong>Psychology</strong> has established an annual<br />

prize <strong>to</strong> be awarded <strong>to</strong> the PhD student<br />

from a university in the United Kingdom<br />

whose thesis is regarded <strong>to</strong> be an exceptional,<br />

innovative contribution <strong>to</strong> knowledge in the<br />

field. Research on any aspect of sport <strong>and</strong><br />

exercise psychology is eligible. The winner will<br />

receive £250 <strong>and</strong> be invited <strong>to</strong> deliver a presentation<br />

based on their thesis at the annual<br />

conference. The winner will also be invited <strong>to</strong><br />

submit an article for publication in <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Exercise</strong> <strong>Psychology</strong> <strong>Review</strong>. Such an article would<br />

be subject <strong>to</strong> the normal review process.<br />

Theses may be nominated for the award<br />

only by the student’s PhD supervisor(s). In<br />

order <strong>to</strong> nominate a thesis, the supervisor(s)<br />

should submit a report that outlines in what<br />

way the thesis makes an outst<strong>and</strong>ing contribution<br />

<strong>to</strong> the discipline. In particular, supervisors<br />

are asked <strong>to</strong> comment on the theoretical contribution,<br />

methodological rigour <strong>and</strong> longterm<br />

impact on the discipline. A proforma will<br />

be supplied <strong>to</strong> supervisors wishing <strong>to</strong> make a<br />

nomination, which includes an extended<br />

abstract of the thesis, registration details <strong>and</strong><br />

any publications derived from research carried<br />

out for the doc<strong>to</strong>ral degree <strong>and</strong> of which<br />

the c<strong>and</strong>idate is the sole or senior author.<br />

The supervisor’s report, c<strong>and</strong>idate’s form<br />

<strong>and</strong> the extended abstract for the thesis<br />

should be returned <strong>to</strong>:<br />

Nominations should be made within one calendar<br />

year of the PhD being awarded, <strong>and</strong><br />

will be judged by the PhD Prize Committee<br />

established by the Division of <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Exercise</strong><br />

<strong>Psychology</strong>. Nominations should be submitted<br />

by March 1 each year <strong>and</strong> will be<br />

considered at the time of the Division of <strong>Sport</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Exercise</strong> <strong>Psychology</strong> AGM held in conjunction<br />

with the BPS Annual Conference.<br />
