By coding pouches offline before they are filled, they can be brought to the production line ready printed. This has considerable advantages for code quality as coding the pouch in its flat form results in a consistently clear, perfectly positioned code. Furthermore, where an online coder is struggling and creating a bottleneck, removing the process from the critical path can deliver <strong>efficiency</strong> improvements. To this end, Rotech has developed the RF1-V, a standalone vacuum feed overprinting system that has been engineered specifically for pouches, bags and other otherwise awkward to feed products. By using a thermal printer with a print width of up to 128mm and printing continuously, a very large print area of almost any length can be accommodated. Pouches equipped with closures such as zippers and resealable labels are handled by using vacuum pick and place technology to pick a pouch from a stack, place it onto a conveyor for printing, and then placing the printed pouch neatly onto another stack for collection. About 40 pouches a minute can be printed on the RF1-V system. T 01707 393700 W www.rotechmachines.com White paper clarifies global regulations that govern inks for food packaging Domino has produced a white paper for companies in the food supply chain entitled ‘Inks for food packaging’, to clarify the regulations and guidelines that govern use of inks for food packaging as well as coding and marking, either printed directly onto food or packaging, using continuous inkjet techniques. While the inks used for coding and marking in food production – which comprises Use By or Sell By dates or batch numbers – constitutes a fraction of all printed inks used in the food packaging process, the rules surrounding its use are complex in their application in different countries. Domino’s white paper outlines the key regulations (EU and non-EU) and related issues, such as migration of inks from packaging into food and migration in the offset printing process. It also explores the effectiveness of different substrates in providing adequate barrier protection against the risk of migration.
