Motor and drive combo
for OEMs and end users
Balancing energy
efficiency improvements
with process control
requirements is eliminated
with synchronous reluctance
(SynRM) motor and variable
speed drive (VSD) packages,
ABB tells Machinery Update.
A synchronous reluctance
motor that combines all of
the energy saving benefits of
permanent magnet technology
together with the service
friendliness of an induction
motor platform paired with
an ABB industrial drive and
advanced software, combine
to offer a complete package for
end users and OEMs.
ABB’s motor has no rotor
windings in the traditional
sense. The rotor therefore,
suffers virtually no power
losses and its temperature
remains lower than in
conventional rotors, delivering
losses typically 40% lower
than its induction motor
counterpart. The motor is
available in two distinct
packages, the first is a motor
which is the same physical
size as a standard IE induction
SynRM motor and variable speed drives that make up the SynRM package
motor but operates at IE4
efficiency levels. The second
variant is called ‘High Output’,
which is typically two frame
sizes smaller for the same
equivalent power compared
to induction motors and
still maintains IE3 energy
efficiency levels.
A variable-speed drive is
required to control ABB’s
SynRM motor. These VSDs
have a range of features
designed to deliver accurate
and reliable process control,
such as direct torque control
designed for highly accurate
motor torque and speed, safe
torque-off to allow for reliable
isolation for maintenance,
built-in safety features
and programming tools.
A SynRM and VSD package
can be specified by an ABB
engineer or an authorised
value provider, to ensure
the right package is installed
and commissioned according
to exact end use requirements
and duty cycles.
Actuators with
a food grade coating
for wash downs
To-lo-matic’s IMA integrated
servo motor actuators, the
company’s most powerful
integrated motor rod actuator,
is now available from Motion
Control Products with a food
grade white epoxy coating and
stainless steel components for
wash down applications in the
food and beverage industry.
Available in four sizes, the
IMA line of integrated motor rod
actuators features stroke lengths
from 76.2mm to 457.2 mm
and peak thrusts from 890 to
30,594N at speeds up to
610 mm a second.
“Many applications within
the food and beverage industry
require high-force electric
actuators that can withstand
the rigours of sanitary wash
down,” says Steve McKay, md of
Motion Control Products. “New
IMA actuators with a food grade
white epoxy coating and ingress
protection rating of IP67 are an
economical alternative to custom
stainless steel actuators.
The IMA actuator series is
compact and durable.
