1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background Since the day it was first used, language has become an important aspect of life. We use language in all parts of our life. We need to communicate with others since day one of our life. Parents teach us with the first language we know as mother tongue. Then we learn another language, Bahasa Indonesia, our national language at school. Today, as the world moves to the age of globalization, the need of learning other language, especially English is increasing and important. English is one of the languages used as an international language in many countries, including Indonesia. By learning English, many benefits will follow; one of them is information and technology transfer from abroad vice versa. By that reason, the government encourages Elementary schools in Indonesia to teach English to their students, although English is not included in national curriculum. As we know, elementary school is the first level for children to learn formally. English, as a part of school local curriculum is taught starting from 4 th grade up to 6 th grade. At present, our country needs a lot of Indonesian human resources who master English well. Thus, the English diploma Program, Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts in Sebelas Maret University, after equipping their students with theories and skills, requires them to conduct job training, practicing their knowledge by applying them in xiii
