Don’t Be Surprised When
a VP Stops By
When Ceres resident Barbariae Boyete
was admitted to Emanuel Medical Center
recently with chest pain, she thought the
nice woman named Connie who visited
her was just another member of Emanuel’s
friendly staff.
“She came into my room and introduced
herself and asked me how I was feeling
and if there was anything she could do,”
Boyete said. “Like all the staff, she was
really nice and very personable.”
It wasn’t until later, when she read the
business card Connie left, that Boyete
realized the pleasant woman who visited
her was the hospital’s Vice President of
Patient Care Services, Connie Fairchilds.
“When I looked at the card, I thought,
‘Wow! I must really be great!’” Boyete
said. “It was nice they sent a VP; I really
felt honored.”
Had Boyete been admitted during a
different week, she might have been visited
by a different hospital vice president – the
head of Human Resources or Emanuel’s
attorney, perhaps – or even by President
and CEO John Sigsbury himself.
A Medical Home Improves
Patient Care
Family Doctors are the Key
In The Wizard
of Oz, Dorothy
learned that
there’s no place
like home.
Now new
studies are
showing that,
in health care
at least,
Dorothy was
right. Researchers
are finding that
doctors who
provide their
patients a
“medical home” deliver better health
outcomes for their patients – and at a
cheaper cost.
Dr. Edmond Ghahramani and Dr. David Canton confer
with a patient at the Emanuel Physician Center.
“The key aspect of a medical home is that
the patient’s primary care physician works
with the patient to coordinate all of their
care,” explained Dr. David Canton, the
Medical Director of the Emanuel Physician
Center. “They make sure the patient gets
all the appropriate screenings, and
coordinates all their treatment. So if
someone is seeing an endocrinologist, an
oncologist and
a pulmonologist,
all those records
come back to
one source.”
Then, and most
importantly, the
primary care
physician doesn’t
just store the
records, he or
she reviews them
to make sure the
whole system
is on the same
page and
working in concert to help and heal
the patient.
“Patients do better when their primary
care physician provides a medical home
and works with them to coordinate care,”
Canton said.
What does this mean for patients
in Turlock?
First, the year-and-a-half-old Emanuel
Physician Center embraces the medical
SPRING 2009
Dear Friends,
Spring in Turlock is a special time. The
winter fog is finally gone and the summer
heat is still somewhere down the road.
Orchards bloom in a riot of color. Days
last longer and the grass grows greener.
It’s a fresh time, a season of rebirth
and renewal.
So the spring issue of HeartBeat seems
like an appropriate time to share with you
some of the seeds we’re planting here at
Emanuel Medical Center – programs to
make this great hospital even better.
My favorite is something we call
Administrative Welcome Visits, and as
you’ll see in the story, what that means is
that one member of Emanuel’s executive
leadership team – myself or one of our
Vice Presidents – visits just about every new
patient admitted to Emanuel. I know it can
be a bit of a surprise when a guy walks
into your room and says he’s the president
of the hospital, so let me apologize now to
anyone I have startled (or will startle in the
future!) These five and 10 minute visits are
a bright spot in all of our days, because
they give us a chance to meet you and get
your feedback on how we’re doing.
And that feedback is very important to us.
As you’ll see in the story about our Service
Excellence Initiative, Emanuel is committed
to providing the best patient care and best
customer service you can find anywhere.
We’re examining everything we do, from
top to bottom, to make your experience at
Emanuel the very best it can be. As a part
of that effort, we will continue to expand
the number of private rooms we have
available for patients.
Jennifer and I want to take this opportunity
to thank everyone who has helped us take
care of this community for more than 90
years – our exceptional and caring
employees, dedicated Board members,
smiling volunteers, generous community
supporters and everyone else who has
helped Emanuel grow and flourish. Our
wonderful donors contributed $2.7
million to Emanuel last year alone –
the most ever – and we could not be
more grateful.
From both of us – and everyone here at
Emanuel Medical Center – thank you
for your continued support. We know
you have health care choices, and we
want Emanuel to be your first choice.
SPRING 2009
Wow! Donors Made 2008 a Record Year
If you’ve stopped reading the
financial stories in the newspaper
or your favorite magazine because
they’re just getting depressing, don’t
worry – this story is different.
In fact, it’s downright inspiring.
That’s because Emanuel Medical
Center’s generous donors and
community supporters are inspiring. In
2008, Emanuel supporters donated
$2.7 million to the hospital – an
all-time record and a seven-percent
increase over 2007.
“It’s amazing, it really is,” said Shirley Pok,
Emanuel’s Vice President of Development.
“Our donors are a truly special group
of individuals.”
Pok knows that people are extra careful
with their money during tough economic
times, noting that charitable giving was
down nationally in 2008. Not only did
Emanuel’s go up, it expanded into new
arenas. In 2008, for instance, three area
people made bequests to Emanuel in
their estate plans, including one gift for
$750,000.
Pok believes this trend will continue.
“We also know that if people have
established a relationship with a cause
or an organization, and that organization
has proven to be good stewards of their
money, most people do continue to give,”
she said. “They know the needs still exist
and they are willing to help according to
their abilities.”
Some of the money raised in 2008 has
already been disbursed to support the
hospital’s many services, including:
•$285,000 to support Hospice of
Emanuel to provide hospice patients and
their families care and support.
Revenue Sources:
•$100,000 for construction of Emanuel’s
Critical Care Center.
•$3,400 to provide nursing scholarships to
the next generation of care givers.
•$360,000 in unrestricted funds that
pays for programs, new technology and
capital projects.
•$885,000 to establish the Emanuel
Cancer Endowment.
The Emanuel Cancer Endowment was its
own success story in 2008. Through the
hospital’s Legacy Circle annual giving
campaign, volunteers raised more than
$1 million for the endowment last year
alone. That brings the two-year fundraising
total to more than $2 million – half way to
reaching the hospital’s $4 million goal.
Once that goal is reached, the
endowment will generate hundreds of
thousands of dollars every year to support
“Our primary fundraising goal for 2009
is the Emanuel Cancer Endowment,”
Pok said. “And we anticipate reaching
that goal this year and having in place
the entire $4 million. After that, we’ll
be looking at raising money for enhanced
cardio-vascular services and expanding
women’s health services at the Ruby E.
Bergman Women’s Center. But for
2009, the focus is on fully funding
the endowment.”
While that may sound ambitious – even
audacious given the current economic
climate – Pok believes the community is
committed enough to do it.
“It is too early to know how deep or how
long the economic downturn will last,”
she said. “These are certainly challenging
times, but it is no time to retreat. Emanuel
will stay focused on the fundamental value
of building relationships and securing
philanthropy that endures, while
continuing to be exceptional stewards
of our resources.”
In other words, be prepared to be
impressed again by the community’s
generosity and support during 2009!
primary care physicians to Turlock. There
are expansion plans for the Center’s current
office behind Emanuel Medical Center,
and a second location is already being
developed on Monte Vista Avenue.
“After that, we’re looking at opening two
more sites around the community in the
next three to five years,” Canton said.
“Then, within five years, we’re looking at
becoming a multi-specialty group with
obstetrics, pediatrics, family practice,
internal medicine and general surgery.”
Second, the Emanuel Physician Center
has the technology to provide patients
a medical home that many other
practices lack.
“An advantage we have here is a brand
new electronic medical records system,”
Canton explained. “The level of
coordination that goes into a medical
home requires accessible medical records,
Dr. Tom Johnson
Most importantly, though, finding a
medical home, either at the Emanuel
Physician Center or another practice,
means patients will do better.
“By developing a medical home, we get
better quality and health outcomes for
our patients and lower overall health care
costs,” Canton said. “It’s a win-win.”
Emanuel Physician Center is located
SPRING 2009
One of the perks
of my job is that
I am never far
from a good
story about what
Emanuel Medical
Center means to
our community.
So much of what I do involves working
with volunteers and donors who look to
Emanuel as their community hospital and
their place to make a real difference in the
lives of others. My office is a hub of
activity – a healthy blend of well-planned
order with spurts of fast and furious.
In frequent contact with our supporters, I
often have the opportunity to hear about
their grateful experiences – the reasons
they give to Emanuel. For some it is a
patient-care experience, but for many it
is simply a well-informed appreciation for
their community hospital close to home.
And every time, I return to my tasks feeling
blessed by these stories that are powerful
reminders of the importance of our work.
Giving is like that – so satisfying.
Philanthropy is one of the greatest
heritages shared by Americans.
Certainly, there is general recognition that
our economy is troubled and that we are
in an economic environment that is beyond
what most imagined possible. While
things are challenging, a basic truth
remains - people continue to give, to the
best of their ability, even in the most
difficult times. Giving brings the
satisfaction of knowing the gift will count
for something worthy and meaningful.
It is our hope that your 2009 giving will
demonstrate that we are partners in tough
as well as in good times.
Gratefully yours,
Emanuel Medical Center is grateful for our relationship with civic-minded businesses that distinguish themselves as “Corporate Partners of
SPRING 2009
Excellence is Just a Starting Point
Some changes are easy to notice. When
Emanuel Medical Center dedicates a new
multi-million dollar Emergency Department
or starts providing comprehensive cancer
care, you can see it when you drive by or
read about it in the newspaper.
Some changes are more subtle. For
instance, when you walk onto a patient
floor at Emanuel now, it’s what you don’t
hear that’s important. And what you
don’t hear is as many call buttons
summoning nurses.
“Beginning last summer, we’ve had
a team focused on finding ways to
increase the amount of time and the
quality of time our nurses spend at
the bedside with each patient,”
explained Connie Fairchilds,
Emanuel’s Vice President of Patient
Care Services. “We instituted
‘hourly rounding,’ where nurses
spend five or ten minutes with every
patient each hour, asking if there is
anything they can do for them. It’s
been great for everyone, and it’s
lowered the number of call lights
which helps reduce the noise on
the floor.”
That change in nursing rounds is
just one of the first concrete
improvements Emanuel has seen as
a result of its Service Excellence Initiative
– a comprehensive effort to make a great
organization even better.
Emanuel President and CEO John Sigsbury
is passionate about the initiative.
“Emanuel has always been known for
having a very caring staff,” he said. “We
know our staff has great talent and great
compassion, and we prided ourselves that
we had that very important aspect of care
covered. But when we looked at customer
6
satisfaction surveys, the numbers weren’t
much different than anyone else’s and we
felt as an organization that we can do
better than that.
“We had the will and we had the
capability. We needed to add
the training.”
So last summer, Emanuel began working
with a Canadian company that has
developed a very successful three-year
program that provides training and a
framework for continual improvement.
Nurse Denal Nieto, RN, checks in with Ruben Hernandez on her
hourly rounds.
And the first people to get trained were
Sigsbury and other senior administrators.
“As senior leadership, we have to walk the
walk,” Sigsbury said. “And we are.”
That’s not even a cliché. Sigsbury and all
the Emanuel vice presidents are literally
walking rounds – visiting new patients
admitted to the hospital. (See the story
on page 1.)
Middle managers were trained next,
then about 100 of Emanuel’s best
employees were selected as trainers to
train the rest of the staff. In each of the
next two years, 100 new employee
trainers will be chosen.
“It’s been fun watching our first 100
trainers,” Fairchilds said. “A lot of them had
never been in front of a classroom before
and we’re really seeing people blossom.”
In addition to the new training and
leadership opportunities, the hospital has
created 12 teams focused on different
aspects of Emanuel’s operations. Each
team has one year to identify and
implement improvements.
“One team is our ‘Go Green’
team,” explained Ashley Williams,
the project director of the initiative.
“They’re charged with looking at
everything we do from an environmental
and recycling standpoint
and finding ways we can improve.”
Another team is looking at
developing ways to provide
ongoing training and support to
new employees. One team is
focusing on all aspects of the
Emergency Department, another
on nursing, and another on
encouraging new physicians to
move to Turlock.
“We’re committed to becoming
the hospital of choice and the employer
of choice,” said Michael Iltis, the Vice
President of Professional Services. “And
that means focusing on patient
satisfaction, physician satisfaction and
employee satisfaction.”
And the effort won’t end after one year or
even three.
“It’s permanent,” Sigsbury said. “This is a
permanent culture change for the hospital
and I’m excited about it.”

Monkey Business: Helping Kids Understand Cancer
Concierge Nancy Daley engages during
Monkey Business
The language of cancer is frightening: Tumor.
Radiation. Chemo. Metastases. Malignant.
For adults, it’s scary enough. But for kids,
too young to really understand what
cancer is, the disease can be terrifying
when it strikes a loved one.
“Cancer is a disease with a strong
emotional element that impacts all the
people around a patient,” explained Sanjiv
Kashyap, the Executive Director of Emanuel
Regional Cancer Services. “And children
are the people least able to understand
their emotions and deal with all these
emotional issues when one of their parents,
or an aunt or uncle or grandparent or other
loved one has cancer.”
To help kids cope in these circumstances,
the Oncology Support Staff at Emanuel
Regional Cancer Services created Monkey
Business, a support and education group
for kids ages 5 to 12. The group started
meeting in March.
During an 8-week series, kids come to the
group with an adult loved one. The kids
meet in one room, the adults in another.
Kashyap said. “The first week’s theme
was ‘What is Cancer?’ and the activities
revolved around that.”
The book and activities sections of the
children’s group helps kids understand
what cancer is and explain the disease
and treatments in language youngsters
can understand.
The crafts portion of the program lets
the kids draw, color, paint or use
modeling clay to illustrate how they’re
feeling, helping them communicate
emotions and feelings they don’t yet have
the words or maturity to express.
In the adult group, participants talk in a
more traditional support group structure,
and learn skills to help them continue to
help their child at home.
Another purpose of the Monkey
Business group is to let kids know
they’re still valued, even when the family’s
focus is on a disease.
“A lot of times, children do get lost in the
shuffle,” Kashyap said. “This group lets
them know they’re still important.”
The class meets from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.
on Tuesdays, and after this first 8-week
series Social Worker Lori Grossman,
Kashyap and the Oncology Support
Staff will evaluate feedback from the
participants and make any needed
adjustments before beginning the
next series.
“Our hope is to do it on a rolling basis
year-around,” Kashyap said.
For more information about the
Monkey Business children’s group, call
the Oncology Support Desk at the
Emanuel Regional Cancer Services at
664-2434.
“Each week has a different theme, and the
children and our social worker do several
activities – a book, an activity and a craft,”
SPRING 2009
Don’t Be Surprised When a VP Stops By
(Continued from page 1)
It’s a new program called Administrative
Welcome Visits, and all 11 of Emanuel’s
top administrators take turns personally
greeting just about every patient who is
admitted to the hospital.
And people love it. The visits make patients
feel special, employees feel valued, and
shows Emanuel’s top executives’ commitment
to patient care and customer service.
“It’s been one of the most powerful tools
we’ve ever implemented,” Sigsbury said.
Here’s how it works. Every week, on a
rotation basis, three administrators are the
designated visitors for the week. Each
morning they get a list of all the patients
admitted in the past 24 hours, divide them
up, and then make time to visit them. (A
few patients who are in isolation or too
sick to receive visitors don’t get greeted.)
“I’ll average nine to 13 patients a day
when it’s my week,” said Fairchilds. “It
takes about an hour-and-a-half, and it’s the
most valuable time in my day.”
The administrators ask patients how they
are feeling and if they know their doctors’
treatment plan. Fairchild asks about the
nurses, and all of them ask if there are
any problems or anything they can do to
make the patient’s stay better. Finally, they
all leave their business cards and ask the
patients to call them if there is anything
they need.
“Patients aren’t hesitant to tell me when
things are great, and they don’t hesitate
to tell me when they want to see things
happen,” Sigsbury said. “Generally
speaking, I’m getting raves.”
Fairchilds is too, but welcomes hearing
negative reviews as much as positive ones.
“We want to address
any concerns patients
have before they leave
the hospital,” Fairchilds
explained. “That’s the
best time to do it.”
Here’s an example:
On her visits one day,
Emanuel’s Chief Financial
Officer Margaret
Lera met a woman who
hadn’t received breakfast
that morning. Not
only did Lera arrange
for her to get a snack
before the next meal
service, she gave the
patient a gift certificate
to a local
restaurant as
an apology.
“We’re trying to
let our patients
know that we
care about the
experience they
have while they’re
here,” Fairchilds
said. “We want
them to know this
is the right place
to be.”
Boyete knows it.
After that first visit
to Emanuel, she
was convinced.
“Now that I’ve
been there,”
Boyete said, “you
can’t get me to go
anywhere else.”
husband Jerry.
Testimonial Letters
At Emanuel, we often receive letters or cards from patients, and our staff
reads and appreciates each and every one. Here are two recent letters,
reprinted with permission from the authors.
Audrey Sumpter was admitted to Emanuel Medical Center on December 17, 2008. She wrote this letter to
Emanuel’s Jana Rhine, Director of Annual Giving, after her release.
Dear Jana,
Tribute Gifts
The following commemorative gifts
represent contributions received
between October 1, 2008 and
February 28, 2009. The names of the
individuals honored and memorialized
are listed in bold print, followed by the
name(s) of the donors.
10
First of all, let me thank you for visiting me while I was “vacationing” in your outstanding facility.
It really meant so very much to me. When you and Nancy arrived, my status went from simply
“patient” to “very pampered individual.” Thanks to the magnificent care I received, I am home
and doing very well.
I really don’t think there are enough outstanding adjectives in the English language to describe the
care and constant monitoring that I received from each and every care giver. They actually laugh,
smile at each other and the patient, say “please” and “thank you,” and not only to the patients, but
to each other. My only regret is that I didn’t have them sign in when they came into the room – I
would like to send each and every one of them a thank you letter. Your housekeeping staff is
amazing – they even changed the water in my flowers! As a result, I developed some very close
relationships with many of the care givers and I appreciated it.
The physical facility is excellent – I could see the ambulance bay and helicopter pad from my room
and spent many hours just looking out the window at the trees, grass, and world in general.
Very sincerely yours,
Audrey Sumpter
Atwater
On August 31, 2008, Ursula Lauterbach came to the Emergency Department at Emanuel Medical Center
with a note saying her jaw was locked and she was in excruciating pain.
Dear Emanuel Medical Center,
When I arrived at the Emergency Department, I could not speak so I came in with a note. I was
whisked away by a wonderful caring nurse within 60 seconds!
She was excellent - ensuring I was comfortable, calling a friend for me, and checking on me
frequently. I had come alone, and the nurse spoke with kindness and concern to my friend over
the phone. Kudos!
The emergency doctor quickly discerned what needed to be done by consulting his computer, and
I felt very confident of his ability to help me. He had a very good bedside manner.
I have told numerous people about my experience at your ER. It was a real contrast to the care a
friend of mine received the day before at another hospital. In fact, the extreme contrast prompted
a paper I wrote for one of my classes!
