Building a Legacy
The first year of a three year effort to build
the Emanuel Cancer Endowment was a
success – and even more is planned for
year two.
Legacy Circle volunteers and donors raised
more than $1 million in the first year of the
campaign, but even more importantly, they
embraced the approach.
“People really understood that this will be
a permanent fund, and that their generosity
will be meaningful for generations,” said
Shirley Pok, Emanuel Medical Center’s
Vice President for Development.
More than 300 volunteers participated
and 1,500 area residents gave generously
in year one. The $1 million raised is a
good start to reaching the $4 million goal.
The endowment will generate hundreds of
thousands of dollars each year for local
cancer services. The money will be used
for things like support groups for patients
and their families, education and cancerprevention
programs, research support,
the cancer library, early detection and risk
assessment, and the Concierge Ambassadors
who greet every patient and help
them access all the services available at
the hospital and Emanuel Medical Plaza.
“It’s an important cause, and we’re blessed
by the lasting gift that Legacy Circle donors
are giving to this community” Pok said.

Merced, a current patient
of Emanuel Regional Cancer Services. “In
fact, when I was diagnosed with colon
cancer in October 2007, I went first to UC
San Francisco. But I ended up at Emanuel.”
It’s been just over a year since Emanuel
Medical Plaza opened its doors, bringing
comprehensive cancer care to Turlock. In
the first few months, patients were
especially happy about its convenience:
They no longer had to drive long distances
to receive cancer treatment.
But as people learn more about Emanuel
Regional Cancer Services, they are doing
new math. They are weighing the

“I considered going to
Stanford Medical
Center and even the
Mayo Clinic after I was diagnosed with
breast cancer last year,” says Rebecca
Barnes of Turlock. “But I felt I could receive
equal quality care here. I’ve been very
happy with my decision.”
Rebecca and her husband, Paul, moved
from Topeka, Kansas, in spring 2007
when Paul became chaplain at Covenant
Village in Turlock. They had only lived in
the area a few months when Rebecca was
diagnosed with cancer.
“My brother and his wife live in Minnesota,
and I considered staying with them while

Dear Friends,
A year ago, when we launched Emanuel
Regional Cancer Services and began the
Emanuel Cancer Endowment, we knew
there was a tremendous need for quality
cancer care in our community.
We are well-pleased with the partnerships
we developed to provide this treatment
and passionate about the new services we
are able to offer patients. We knew that
building these services was going to take
a lot of hard work by a lot of dedicated
and talented people.
A year later, looking back on all that was
accomplished in the past 12 months, we
are again reminded of what an incredible
community we live in.
In this issue of HeartBeat, some of our
patients tell their stories. They’re people
from our community who could have gone
anywhere for treatment – and some started
elsewhere – but they discovered that the
quality of care we provide here was equal
to any. Nothing makes us at Emanuel
more gratified.
Other stories highlight the Ruby E. Bergman
Women’s Center, and look at some of the
new treatments, programs and services
now available to cancer patients and their
families. We thank our dedicated physicians
and all of our staff and volunteers who
make these successes possible.
And we thank you for making the Emanuel
Cancer Endowment possible.
When our $4 million fundraising goal is
met, the Endowment will generate
hundreds of thousands of dollars each year
to provide and expand cancer services
in our communities. It will fund important
efforts like prevention and screening
programs, support groups, ongoing
research and the Concierge Ambassadors
who greet each patient and help guide
them through their treatment.
This is year two of our three-year
Legacy Circle campaign to build the
Endowment and we invite you to be a
part of this special effort. As the stories
in this HeartBeat show, we’re already
making a real difference in the lives
of families here in Turlock and our
surrounding communities. By donating

World-Class Women’s Center Set to Open
The Ruby E. Bergman Women’s Center
will soon welcome patients to its new
world-class facilities inside Emanuel
Medical Plaza.
“It’s going to be a center of excellence
and a real showcase,” says Dr. Walter
Maynard, the center’s Medical Director.
“With our improved collaboration and
expanding technology, we intend to
create the best breast imaging center in
the Northern Central Valley.”
They are well on their way. Maynard took
the helm of the Ruby E. Bergman Women’s
Center in October 2007. In his first week,
Maynard expanded the center’s services
to include pre-operative wire localizations,
diagnostic mammograms, high-resolution
targeted breast ultrasounds and ultrasoundguided
vacuum-assisted breast biopsies.
State-of-the-art digital mammography,
stereotactic biopsy and MRI equipment will
be installed in the new center.
“I applaud hospital administrators for their
vision and commitment to establishing this
comprehensive Breast Imaging Center,”
Maynard says from his office at the Ruby
Berman Center’s current location on
Colorado Avenue, across the parking lot
from Emanuel Medical Plaza.
Maynard sits in front of a computer, the
better way to illustrate how new digital
mammographic and ultrasound images
improve cancer detection and treatment.
“It improves the quality and flow of
information between physicians,” he says,
clicking on a digital image on his computer
screen. “If we see an area of concern,
we can zoom in and make it brighter
and clearer, like this. The images are
immediately available on-line for viewing
by referring and consulting physicians,
which improves collaboration.”
Patient flow is important to Dr. Maynard,
and was a big factor in the design of the
new 6,000 square-foot center on the
second floor of Emanuel Medical Plaza.

“We will have separate areas for screening
and diagnostic exams,” he explains. “The
processes are different – screening exams
go more quickly – so keeping them separate
will improve patient flow.”
Work is now being completed and
administrators anticipate a grand opening
this fall.
“We’re excited,” Maynard says. “We’re
looking forward to being in the same
building as the other Emanuel Regional
Cancer Services. It improves physician
collaboration, patient care coordination
and reduces travel for patients.”
Yearly breast cancer screening will still be
central to Dr. Maynard’s mission.
“Annual screening saves lives. The
earlier you detect breast cancer, the
better your chances are for diseasefree
survival.”

Maynard wants all eligible patients to
receive screening exams every year.
He and his staff will also reach out to
emergency rooms, urgent care groups,
churches and service organizations to find
the uninsured and underinsured who aren’t
being screened annually, if at all.
“We’ll provide free screening clinics to
make sure no one falls through the cracks,”
he says.
Dr. Maynard’s passion is apparent and
personal. His wife, Lillian, is a breast
cancer survivor.
“Early detection is the key,” he says.
Dr. Maynard completed his internship
at UCLA Affiliated Hospitals and his
radiology residency and a nuclear
medicine fellowship at Martin Luther King,
Jr. General Hospital in Los Angeles. Before
coming to Emanuel, he was the breast
imaging specialist at several major
institutions in Southern California. He was
Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiology at
USC’s Keck School of Medicine.

A Year of Incredible Advances: Looking Back at Emanuel
In its first year of service, Emanuel Regional
Cancer Services provided incredible new
treatments, hospital programs and patient
services for area cancer patients and their
families – advances that will continue and
expand in year two.
“It’s been a year of exponential
development in our cancer program,”
said John Sigsbury, President and CEO of
Emanuel Medical Center. “It’s incredible
the number of things we’ve taken on.”
These new treatments and services provide
Turlock-area residents and their families
world-class cancer treatment options that
simply didn’t exist in the area before. Some
of the highlights:
New Treatments
Varian Trilogy Linear Accelerator – The
machine at the heart of the Stanford
Emanuel Radiation Oncology Center, the
Varian Trilogy is the latest and best
technology available for delivering precise
doses of therapeutic radiation to exactly
where it’s needed in a patient’s body.
The Radiation Oncology Center has been
treating 20 or more patients a day with the

state-of-the-art machine, and developing
even more advanced treatments with it,
including:
• Respiratory gating, where advanced
computers learn a patient’s breathing
patterns and adjust the radiation beam
to match.
• Image-guided treatment, where new
X-rays are taken before each radiation
treatment to pinpoint the location of a
tumor. Some tumors move a bit within the
body, and this technique allows
oncologists to use a narrower beam of
radiation aimed more precisely.
“The more accurate you can make it, the
fewer side effects there will be and the
greater tumor control you can achieve,”
explained Denny DeLange, Director of the
Stanford Emanuel Radiation Oncology
Center. “These techniques enable us to
increase the dose of radiation we’re able
to deliver to the tumor.”
Stanford Specialty Clinics – A valuable
part of the cooperative relationship
between Emanuel Medical Center and
the Stanford Hospitals & Clinics and
Stanford University School of Medicine is
the availability of Stanford cancer
specialists in Turlock.
The first of these is Dr. Margrit M. Juretzka,
a gynecologic oncology specialist who
has started scheduling regular days in the
Emanuel Medical Plaza to see patients.
“We’re not bringing in people who compete
with local providers,” DeLange said.
“We’re bringing in specialists who will
enhance the services available here.”
Future clinic specialists will be identified
and scheduled as local needs
become evident.
Tumor Review Boards – Tumor review
boards hold weekly meetings between all
of a patient’s doctors – the primary care
physician, surgeon, medical oncologist
who administers chemotherapy treatments
and radiation oncologist. They ensure
every aspect of a patient’s treatment is
coordinated to work hand-in-hand with
each other.
New Women’s Treatment Options –
Women with breast cancer will have new
treatments available at the new Breast
Imaging Center opening soon in the
Emanuel Medical Plaza, including:
• Multi-Disciplinary Breast Clinic at
California Oncology will let patients meet
with a medical oncologist, radiation
oncologist and surgeon all at once.
“It’s a one-stop approach,” explained
Dr. Christopher Perkins of California
Oncology, who is also the Medical
Director of Emanuel Regional Cancer
Services. “It will save patients a lot of
driving all over town.”
• Digital mammography at the Ruby E.
Bergman Women’s Center. This advanced
technology will be only one of new
treatments and services available when
the Center opens in its new location this
fall. (See related story, page 3.)
New Hospital Programs
In addition to new treatment options,
Emanuel Medical Center has undertaken
several new programs that will improve
cancer and other treatments for its patients.
These include:
Investigational Review Board – The
Investigational Review Board, or IRB, is the
first step in participating in national clinical
trials and research into new treatments and
techniques. The IRB is in place at Emanuel,
and patients will be able to participate
in clinical trials of cutting-edge treatments
before summer ends.

Cancer Committee – This group of doctors
and hospital administrators not only plans,
coordinates and develops cancer services,
it also is directing the effort to receive full
accreditation by the American College of
Surgeons as a regional cancer center.
Hospital Renovations – To support the
Emanuel Regional Cancer Services, the
Medical Center renovated a half-dozen
patient rooms for cancer patients, creating
more room for families and making the
room feel more like home.
Patient Services
The third element of expanded cancer
treatment services at Emanuel are a new
and expanding array of patient services.
These include:
Cancer Library – This resource center
features a growing number of books and
videos as well as Internet access for
patients to learn more about their
conditions and treatments.
Support Groups and a Social Worker – A
full-time social worker was recently hired to
plan and provide an increasing number of
support groups for cancer patients.
Screenings – One
of the most exciting
first-year successes
of Emanuel’s cancer
services was a free
April screening for
prostate and
colon cancer.
“It was our largest
screening ever,”
Sigsbury said.
“Patients received a
physical exam, had
their histories taken,
and got follow-up
with their lab results.”
The screening detected cancers in a
handful of the nearly 100 people who
participated, and they are now
in treatment.
Screenings for breast cancer and skin
cancer are scheduled next, and Sigsbury
sees these kinds of prevention and early
detection efforts as a key component
of Emanuel Regional Cancer Services
and a key function of the Emanuel
Cancer Endowment.
“The faster we can raise the money, and
the more we can raise, the more we can
dedicate to these kinds of outreach and
education efforts,” he said.
So to summarize, it’s been a busy year.
“It’s exciting,” Perkins said. “It’s great for this
community, it’s great for the hospital and
it’s great for patients.”

Rebecca says. “And we considered going
to Stanford, too.”
But Paul says after their first visit to Emanuel
Medical Plaza, they felt confident Emanuel
Regional Cancer Services would provide
the care she needed.
“We trusted Dr. (Mohamed) Eldaly right
from the start,” Paul says. “He was
knowledgeable and compassionate.
We were impressed with the whole place
– the facilities, the surgeon, Dr. (Paul)
Carmichael, Dr. Eldaly and his staff, everyone
in the Stanford Emanuel Radiation
Oncology Center.”

Rebecca agrees.
“It was a very positive experience,” she
says. “Everyone was so supportive.”
That’s how Mary Amezquita feels, too. Like
Rebecca, she was diagnosed with breast
cancer last year, and it felt like the end of
the world.
“But the first day we went to meet Dr.
Eldaly, I knew it was going to be OK,”
Mary says from her home in Turlock. “I

trusted him right from the beginning. And
everyone in the office made us feel so
at ease.”
During all her treatments, Mary’s husband,
Jose, was by her side, wearing his dapper
hats that everyone loved.
“Jose loved going there – which tells you
something about the place,” Mary says.
“My children came too. My youngest
daughter, Carolind, was there for every
treatment. And everyone made all of us
feel so welcome and at home.”
But it wasn’t just the convenience and
friendly atmosphere that Mary and her
family appreciated.
“The quality of the care was very,
very good,” Mary says. “It was number
one – as good as I could have gotten
anywhere.”
Quality care was Michael Franzese’s top
concern when he learned, in October
2007, that he had stage four colon cancer.
He was a fit, young father and the news
rocked his world.
“I was in shock,” says Michael, a respiratory
therapist at Mercy Hospital in Merced.
He consulted first with a doctor at the
University of California, San Francisco,
Dr. Alan Venook, who suggested Michael
seek initial treatment with a colleague –
Dr. Christopher Perkins, Medical Director
of Emanuel Regional Cancer Services.
Dr. Perkins referred Michael to his partner,
Dr. Eldaly, a medical oncologist who
specializes in Michael’s type of cancer.
“I’ll never forget that first time I walked
into Dr. Eldaly’s office,” Michael says. “I
was with my son, Presley, who was 13
at the time. I was still in shock, and very
emotional, and it was hard for my son,
too, of course. Everyone greeted us with
open arms. It was amazing. Dr. Eldaly
was fantastic, right from the start. He gets
straight to the point, gives you the facts. I
trust him, and that makes all the difference
in the world.”

Michael has a long road ahead of him,
but he has boundless love and support
from so many people.
“I have quite an entourage with me during
my treatments,” Michael says. “My mom,
Gladys, sits with me during all my
infusions, and my little nieces are often
there, too. My brother and his wife live in
Turlock. We’re a close family, and I guess
things like this can bring you even closer.”
Emanuel Regional Medical Services
reinforces that support, Michael says.
“The volunteers and staff are always there
asking, ‘Can I get you blanket? Would
you like a drink of water?’ That’s what I
love about Emanuel Medical Plaza,”
Michael says. “The care is very high
quality and everyone is patient-oriented.
They’re completely focused on what the
patient needs, and they get it done.”

General Surgeons
Emanuel Medical Center is pleased
to provide a talented team of general
surgeons who have the expertise and
technology to meet a full spectrum of
surgical needs.
Let’s take a look at members of the team:
Oasis Surgical contributes two excellent
surgeons to Emanuel’s medical staff: The
husband-and-wife team of Dr. Paul
Carmichael and Dr. Katherine Barton.
Drs. Carmichael and Barton opened Oasis
Surgical four years ago, relocating
their East Coast practice to Turlock.
They specialize in oncological surgery
and advanced laparoscopy. They are
trained in Sentinel Lymph Node
Mapping, just one of the many new
advanced services available at
Emanuel Regional Cancer Services.
Dr. Carmichael studied medicine at
the Medical College of Virginia before
completing his residency at Roanoke
Memorial Hospitals in Virginia.
Dr. Barton studied medicine at the
University of Virginia Medical School
and completed her residency at
Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
When they are away from the operating
room, the couple enjoys the theatre, hiking
and kayaking.
Dr. Huy Dao joined Emanuel’s medical
staff two years ago. He is specially trained
and interested in laparoscopic surgery
and its use in the treatment of gastric and
intestinal surgery.
Laparoscopic procedures are made using
a small incision, usually on an outpatient
basis, and are less invasive than traditional
surgery – reducing a patient’s discomfort
and recovery time.
“We are finding many new ways to use
laparoscopic surgery to successfully treat a
variety of conditions,” Dr. Dao said.
Dr. Dao received his Doctorate of
Osteopathic Medicine from Midwestern
University in Arizona. He and his wife
have four children.

Dr. Dao, Dr. Bailie, Dr. Greenbarg, and Dr. Thakur.
Dr. Anjani Thakur joined Emanuel’s
medical staff two years ago, along with
his wife, internist Vijaya Thakur. Both doctors
were in private practice in Southern
California before moving to Turlock.
Laparoscopic surgery is also an area of
expertise for Dr. Thakur. He is working to
expand its role in abdominal surgery, a
special focus of his practice, along with
women’s digestive problems, abnormalities
of the esophagus, other gastric and
intestinal disorders and breast cancer.
Dr. Thakur received his medical degree
from Georgetown University and completed
his residency at UCLA. He and his
wife met during their final year of medical
school. They have two young children.
Dr. James Greenbarg has been practicing
in Turlock for 12 years, performing a
broad spectrum of vascular, thoracic and
abdominal surgical procedures with a
special focus on the gastrointestinal tract.
Dr. Greenbarg and his wife, Stefanie,
moved from New York to Turlock 12
years ago, returning to his wife’s
hometown.
“I’m from Fresno, so this felt like home
to me, too, especially when compared
to the Bronx,” he said.
Dr. Greenbarg completed his residency
at New York Medical School.
He and Stefanie have five children.
Dr. Daryl Bailie has been practicing
a broad array of general surgery in
Turlock since 1990, including laparoscopic,
oncological, gastrointestinal
as well as chest and vascular surgery.
Dr. Bailie moved to Turlock 18 years
ago after completing a general surgery
residency at New York Medical College
and a thoracic and vascular fellowship at
White Memorial Medical Center in Los
Angeles. He and his wife, Michelle, have
four children and one grandchild.
