Building A Legacy
In the past, Emanuel Medical Center’s
annual giving campaign raised money for
a physical thing – a building or piece of
equipment people can touch.
This year is different.
This year’s Legacy Circle campaign will
begin building the Emanuel Cancer
Endowment, a permanent fund to
enhance the comprehensive cancer
services the hospital now provides. The
three-year campaign is titled “The Need
- The Vision - The Cure.”
The $4 million endowment will generate
hundreds of thousands of dollars every
year to fund services including cancer
prevention and education, community
support groups and outreach, a cancer
library, early detection and risk
assessment and the concierge service

“I look up to
him,” says Arnet
Givargiznia, Dylan’s dad. “He’s always
smiling and helping others. He’s my hero.”
Doctors diagnosed Dylan’s leukemia on
Easter Sunday 2005, just after his sixth
birthday. Arnet had been hounding
doctors for weeks to figure out why his
son’s legs hurt so badly.
“I knew it was more than growing pains.”
By the time Dylan’s leukemia was
discovered, it had spread to 90 percent of
his body. Dylan stayed at the University of
California, San Francisco for five months.
He became the
kid who helped
other young
patients, offering
tips like, “If you
hold your breath
when they stick
in the needle, it
doesn’t hurt
as bad.”
When folks from
the Make-A-Wish
Foundation said
he could have
anything he
wanted, Dylan
asked for a Game
Boy, even though
he already had one. When they
delivered it, Dylan got out of bed, slowly,
and walked with his IV pole to the bedside
of a boy who hadn’t met the Make-A-
Wish criteria.
“Here,” Dylan said, and gave the Game
Boy to him.

Dear Friends,
This is an exciting time at Emanuel Medical
Center. After years of planning and hard
work by many talented and dedicated
people, comprehensive cancer treatment is
finally available here in Turlock.
Emanuel Medical Plaza, which houses
the Stanford Emanuel Radiation Oncology
Center, California Oncology of Turlock
and Oasis Surgical, is open and
welcoming patients. The Ruby E. Bergman
Women’s Center will open upstairs in the
Tuolumne Road building later this year or
early next.
The stories in this HeartBeat will introduce
you to the center and its services, and to
a few people in our community whom
this center was built to serve – neighbors
who have been touched by cancer.
Unfortunately, that list is a long one.
So many people have had personal
battles with the disease, or helped a family
member or friend through the fight.
That’s why we are beginning the
Emanuel Cancer Endowment, a $4
million permanent fund that will generate
hundreds of thousands of dollars every
year for cancer services in Turlock.
Those services will include outreach and
prevention, early detection, support groups
and other social services. They will help
make the top-quality medical services we
have accessible, and, as much as we can,
make the treatment process less frustrating
and frightening.
This year’s Legacy Circle fundraising
campaign – titled “The Need - The Vision
- The Cure” – will raise money for that
endowment. Your gift to the Endowment
will help people in this community
overcome cancer, and it will help for
generations to come. We hope you’ll
join us in this important effort.

Helping Others Helps
Cal Newberry
It took three-and-a-half hours for Cal and
Carolyn Newberry to get from Turlock to
Stanford for that first cancer consultation in
2003.
“MapQuest had us drive down to San
Jose and then back up 101,” Cal says. “I
told the doctors, ‘We can’t be making this
drive every day!’ ”
The Newberrys found an easier route
to Stanford Medical Center, but the trip
was never easy. Carolyn and Cal fought

her ovarian cancer for four long years,
traveling a road too familiar to cancer
patients and their families – the pain, the
prayers, the exhaustion, the hope.
The desperation. Last November, after
four rounds of chemotherapy, doctors told
Carolyn there was nothing left to try.
“We just sat in that exam room and
cried,” Cal says.
In the end, they came home to Turlock,
where Emanuel’s Dr. Mohamed Eldaly
helped manage Carolyn’s pain and gave
Cal the advice he needed to hear.
“He looked me right in the eyes and told
me, kindly, ‘You need to take time off work
now and be with your wife.’ ”
Carolyn died a week later, on February
26, 2007, daughter Sara’s 17th birthday.
Carolyn died at home, comforted by her
family, friends and faith.
“She would be thrilled with this
endowment, knowing others won’t have to
travel so far for quality care,” Cal says.
Ronna Fraser
After months of tests, surgeries and
chemotherapy, Ronna Fraser is almost
through with her clash with cancer.
She has one last thing to do.
“I want to tell people in Turlock what a
wonderful cancer program our hospital
has implemented.”

in September 2006, becoming one of the
first patients of Emanuel’s Cancer Services.
“The care was excellent, and it’s right here
in our own backyard.”
For Ronna, the hardest part was telling
her son.
“Todd is away at Fresno State and he
didn’t believe me when I said I was going
to be OK,” Ronna says.
When Todd came to visit, Emanuel’s
Dr. Mohamed Eldaly explained his
mother’s treatment and told him her
prognosis was excellent.
“Todd felt better after that,” Ronna says.
“So did I.”

long as the need exists, so will
the endowment.
“The endowment provides permanent
funds,” explained Emanuel’s Shirley
Pok, Vice President of Development.
“The Emanuel Cancer Endowment will
go on forever.”
Now that’s a legacy to be proud of.

Dylan is home in Turlock now, a smart and
happy third-grader at Crowell Elementary
School. Arnet gives him chemotherapy at
home every day.
When his son was first diagnosed, Arnet
cried for three months straight - until a
conversation with Dylan altered his view.
“Why did this happen, Dad?”
“It happens to thousands of people every
year,” Arnet told him. “You happen to be
one of the unfortunate.”
“OK,” Dylan said. “I’d rather it be me than
you, or someone else.”
In that moment, Arnet’s perspective changed.
“I stopped thinking, ‘It should have been
someone else’,” Arnet says. “I stopped
obsessing about what had happened, and
focused more on what needs to happen.”
Together, Dylan and his dad look forward.
There are still tears, and pain. But mostly,
they see wonderful things on the horizon
– karate, fishing, riding bikes. They see
others in need, too, which is why they are
supporting the Legacy Circle campaign.
“Will it help other people with cancer?”
Dylan asked his dad.
“Yeah, it will,” Arnet said.
“Then let’s do it,” Dylan said.

WHAT THE STANFORD PARTNERSHIP MEANS FOR PATIENTS
Whether you believe in karma, fate or
divine intervention, the beginning of the
partnership between Emanuel Medical
Center and Stanford Hospitals & Clinics
and Stanford University School of
Medicine is still a miracle.
Emanuel President John Sigsbury was
at Stanford to see about working with
its laboratory. He happened to meet
the director of Stanford’s cancer center,
who had just been on the phone with a
radiation therapist Sigsbury once worked
with in Maryland.
Naturally, they talked about Sigsbury’s
former hospital, which had an outreach
partnership with Georgetown University.
The Stanford director’s old hospital
also used to participate in an outreach
partnership.
“He told me, ‘We’d love to do that here
– do you have something in mind?’ ”
Sigsbury said.
That was 2004, and the partnership
born in that moment is now the Stanford
Emanuel Radiation Oncology Center,
which is open and working to save lives.
“We treated our first patient March 21
at 2:39 p.m.,” said Don Goffinet, M.D.,
Emeritus Professor of Radiation Oncology
at Stanford, the Interim Medical Director.

What does the partnership with Stanford
mean for patients?
Goffinet explains.
“We are fully integrated with Stanford,”
he said. “When a patient starts radiation
therapy in Turlock, their imaging and
treatment plans are reviewed in real time
at Stanford.”
Stanford’s quality assurance assessments
are in place and include the Stanford
Emanuel Center. All patients treated at the
Turlock center have their cases reviewed
by faculty physicians during the weekly
Stanford Radiation Oncology chart rounds.
In addition, the center is developing an
Institutional Review Board at Emanuel,
which will give patients the opportunity
to participate in clinical trials of new
treatments and therapies; trials already
under way at Stanford or new studies that
will begin in Turlock.
The Stanford physician working at the
center is a member of the university’s
medical school faculty, and other
Stanford faculty will visit the Turlock center
frequently, giving lectures and workshops
for area physicians.
“I’ve been very impressed by the high
quality of care available here,” Goffinet
said. “There are excellent medical
oncologists and surgeons at Emanuel.
The primary care physicians, hospitalists
and everyone on the Emanuel Medical
staff are first-rate.”

of the art. The centerpiece, a $3 million
machine that delivers precise doses of
therapeutic radiation exactly where

it needs to be, is one of only three in
Northern California. (The others are in
San Francisco and at Stanford.)
And perhaps that’s the best thing about the
Stanford partnership. It brings cutting-edge
medicine home to Turlock.
“You shouldn’t have to drive three hours
to get care,” said Dr. Christopher Perkins,
Medical Director of Emanuel’s Cancer
Services. “Care should be available here,
and it should be great care.”
And it is.

Emanuel Cancer Services Provide New Hope
The foundation of the comprehensive
cancer services now available at Emanuel
Medical Center isn’t the concrete beneath
our new state-of-the-art building.
It’s the philosophy that brought it to life.
Emanuel Medical Plaza, the new cancer
center, was built on a philosophy of
providing outstanding patient care, and
that focus guides every aspect of the
center, from the partners involved to the
services provided.
“Our philosophy is to provide the best
healthcare possible without having to drive
a hundred miles. There’s no reason to do
it otherwise,” said John Sigsbury, President
and CEO of Emanuel Medical Center.
“All of this was built on the question,
‘How do we provide service that treats
people special?’ ”
New Partners
It starts with the partners involved.
Emanuel’s partnership with Stanford
Hospitals & Clinics and Stanford University
School of Medicine to provide radiation
therapy began with a happy accident (see
related story) but it took the hospital longer
to find the right medical oncologists to
provide chemotherapy for patients. When
Sigsbury met Dr. Christopher Perkins and
Dr. Mohamed Eldaly of California
Oncology, he knew they shared the same
patients-first philosophy. Perkins knew
it too.
“For us, it had to be the right fit,” said
Perkins. “They had to be passionate about
patient care and want to do it well. And
this fit that. I’ve never met hospital administrators
more dedicated to patient care
and the community.”
New Services
The patient-focused philosophy also led to
the comprehensive approach the hospital
took toward cancer care. In addition
to oncology and radiation therapy, the
cancer center houses Oasis Surgical and
will house the Ruby E. Bergman Women’s
Center, a library and education center,
prevention and early-detection programs,
community outreach and support groups
– services that didn’t exist in Turlock before
in this comprehensive manner. Patients will
also now be able to participate in clinical
trials of new treatments, and patients’
cases will be evaluated by a Tumor Board
– a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist
and surgeon – who collectively will try
to plan the best course of treatment.
New Equipment
The center also has the best equipment
available. The heart of the radiation
treatment is a $3 million machine called a
Varian Trilogy linear accelerator, which
focuses therapeutic radiation exactly where

it needs to go. Sigsbury said the center
was buying a General Electric (G.E.) imaging
scanner, used to locate tumors, and
when G.E. learned the center was going
to get a Varian Trilogy – the only one in
any Central Valley hospital – it upgraded
the million-dollar scanner for free.
“The G.E. machine in combination with the
Varian, it’s the best technology anywhere
in the world,” Sigsbury said, excitement
rising in his voice. “Anywhere in the world.
And it’s in Turlock!”
Just as telling, though, is the hallway that
leads to those machines. It’s not clinical
and cold like a typical hospital corridor.
The hall has an inlayed wood floor and
live plants to make it homey. Patients don’t
wear paper robes or hospital gowns at
treatment, either. The center bought real
robes; soft, warm, terrycloth robes worthy
of a spa. It’s a small thing, but important.
More important is the effect the cancer
center will have on the hospital itself. Quite
simply, it’ll improve everything.
“When you do oncology, there’s a wide
range of services you have to be good
at,” Sigsbury explained. “The pathology
department is important. Surgery improves.
Previously, there were few doing sentinelnode
biopsies, but to stage a cancer,
you have to be able to do that. So the
surgeons are stepping up a notch. The
pharmacy needs to prepare chemotherapy
infusions in volume.”
Perkins added to the list.
“Nursing, lab services,” he said. “When a
patient comes in for chemo, we need lab
work – blood panels, white counts. And
we want those results within minutes.”
The hospital’s inpatient cancer unit will
also be renovated, with private rooms and
extra space for caregivers and family, all
designed to feel more like home.
Perkins and Sigsbury agree on something
else as well: Turlock deserves all of it.
“Turlock is an amazing community,” Perkins
said. “That’s why we’re here. The community
supports this hospital. It’s mind-boggling,
this community. People here do what’s right
for the community.”

CARDIAC PATIENTS GET PRIVATE ROOMS
For years, Emanuel Medical Center
has provided patients requiring cardiac
monitoring state-of-the-art medicine
and technology.
And now, Emanuel is providing cardiac
patients yet another key to successful
treatment: Private rooms.
The Medical Telemetry Unit - or Med-Tele,
as it’s called - offers 36 private, spacious
rooms specially designed for patients
requiring cardiac monitoring. It’s located
on the third floor of Emanuel’s new Critical
Care Center.
“Part of the admission criteria for the
third floor is that patients have cardiac
monitoring,” says Suzanne Garrett,
director of the Medical Telemetry Unit.
“There were a large number of monitored
patients on the medical oncology floor
before this center opened in May, but that
was just temporary.”
The third-floor rooms are large, quiet and
comfortable, designed to help patients
and families feel at home. Each room has
a cherry-wood armoire and bedside table.

The waiting rooms are large and relaxing.
Even the hallways are designed for peace
and quiet, with alcoves, carpet and
recessed lighting.
With the Med-Tele Unit up-and-running,
Emanuel’s $30 million Critical Care
Center is just about finished. The final
phase is a rooftop helipad which should
be in place later this summer.

Estate Planning is a somewhat familiar
term to many. But what does it really
entail? For some it may be a simple
will, powers of attorney, and advanced
health care directives. For others it means
hundreds of pages of convoluted trust
documents, family limited partnerships,
IDGTs, CRATs, CRUTs, QPRTs, and lots
more. First and foremost, estate planning
means fulfilling your wishes for the use
and distribution of the assets that you have
been able to accumulate during your
lifetime. If you love your daughter, but
hate her spouse, you may want specific
provisions in your plan to keep his hands
off of what goes to your daughter.
Many people recognize that for their
particular situation it is not necessary
that everything should stay in the family.
Proper estate planning often includes
lifetime gifts to a worthy charitable entity,
as well as transfers at death or beyond.
An example would be to provide for a
disabled child or relative with a lifetime
interest in certain assets which ultimately
pass to charity at the child’s death long
after you die.
If you are considering the sale of a major
asset, a Charitable Remainder Trust for
all or a portion of the asset can have
tremendous tax savings potential. It is also
a great way to convert an asset that does
not produce income to an income stream
in a tax-favored way.
Successful estate planning requires the
advice of qualified professionals to
develop a complete plan that meets your
specific goals. This is best accomplished
by developing your own team of advisers.
An attorney, certified public accountant,
financial planner, and life insurance agent
should all be candidates for this team.
