EMC: Providing Comprehensive Health Care
EMC is committed to creating a healthier
community by providing patients with the
most comprehensive care. With the opening
of the Emanuel Physician Center, family
physicians help minimize missed diagnoses and promote preventative care. EMC also offers
laparoscopic gastric banding, a minimally invasive weight loss surgery that allows patients
to gradually lose weight and live a healthier, more active lifestyle. And the Stanford Emanuel
Radiation Oncology Center provides the most advanced cancer treatment options available —
along with a supportive, caring environment for cancer patients.
These are just a few of the ways Emanuel Medical Center is improving the community, one
patient at a time.
Our Medical Home
Addressing Community Needs
In response to the community need
for more primary care physicians
in Turlock and nearby areas, EMC
opened the Emanuel Physician
Center. The center provides patients
with a place that coordinates all care and treatment — a medical home that offers family
practice and preventative medicine services for all ages, all under one roof. A second location
is opening soon, providing greater access to primary health care services to hundreds of local
residents in need of a physician.
Our Community Support
Raising Awareness, Providing Care
This past year, Emanuel Medical Center focused its community service in three vital areas:
Basic Access to Care
Without EMC, during FY 2009:
• Residents or their visitors would have left the community 56,000 times for
emergency treatment.
• More than 2,000 babies would not have been born at a local hospital.
• 500 people would have made nursing home arrangements outside of the community
and away from their family.
Increased Physician Availability
EMC is addressing the service area’s severe physician shortage. During FY 2009, the following
eight new physicians were added to our local medical staff:
• Two family practice physicians who will provide medical homes to residents without
a family doctor.
• A gastroenterologist, two orthopedic
surgeons and a neurologist.
• Two OB/GYNs who will provide
essential prenatal, delivery and
postpartum services.
EMC’s increased efforts to bring outstanding
new physicians to the community have been
successful. In total, 37 new physicians have
joined an established medical practice or
opened a new offi ce in Turlock over the past
fi ve years.
Community Education
A key aspect of the new cancer services
we recently brought to Turlock is expanding
education and screening services. This past
year, EMC hosted:
• Prostate and Colon Cancer Community Screening Event: 99 residents were screened
by nine physicians and 12 staff volunteers.
• Community Women’s Health Conference: The day-long conference featuring seven
physicians provided education and materials on topics ranging from new techniques in
breast surgical cases to the effi ciency of the cervical cancer vaccine. It also included a
physician panel discussion about women’s cancer-related health matters.
Our Women’s Center
New Location, New Technology
In 2009, EMC relocated the Ruby E. Bergman
Women’s Center to the second fl oor of the
Emanuel Medical Plaza. In the new 6,000
square-foot space, patients now have access
to the latest in digital mammography and
soon the fi rst dedicated breast MRI technology in the region. The Women’s Center also offers
pre-operative wire localizations, digital high-resolution targeted breast ultrasounds, and core
and vacuum-assisted breast and stereotactic biopsies.
Our Children
Pediatrics Partnership
In affi liation with doctors from Children’s Hospital
Central California and the physicians of the
Specialty Medical Group Central California,
EMC is home to a Pediatric Inpatient Hospitalist
program. This program offers around-the-clock
care at EMC for its young patients. Pediatricians
manage the pediatric inpatient unit and neonatal intensive care unit, all while working closely
with EMC physicians.
Our Volunteers
Compassion for Life
From community newcomers to longtime
locals, EMC volunteers share a common
desire — to improve their local hospital and
town by donating their time and talents.
Volunteer Hours
Volunteers graciously donate their time
to a variety of EMC services, including
Emanuel Regional Cancer Services and
Hospice of Emanuel. More than 800
volunteers contributed more than 67,000
hours of service.
Donations
Each year, EMC is blessed with generous support from former patients and their families, local
businesses, national corporations, and the community at large. EMC’s Volunteer Auxiliary
donated $100,000 to Legacy Circle of Emanuel and $15,000 in scholarships to students in
the health care fi eld. In total, Emanuel donors contributed $2.7 million to the hospital this
past year — an all-time record for the organization.
And for that, EMC salutes its generous volunteers and donors.
