terminal illnesses.
They range in age from 14 to 88, and
that’s part of the magic.
Hospice of Emanuel
Providing Comfort and Care
The battle against life-threatening diseases
can sometimes be long and grueling.
Sometimes, with the help of their medical
team, patients decide they’ve had enough.
They want to stop the fight.
That doesn’t mean
life is over. It doesn’t
mean they don’t need
medical care.
“Patients need our
help more so, not less
so, when they enter
this stage of their
life,” says Dr. James
MacLaren, Turlock
family practitioner
and medical director
of Hospice of
Emanuel. “It’s our
duty to prepare
patients and their
families for the dying process. There’s no
reason anyone should suffer excessively.”
Hospice of Emanuel helps patients and
their loved ones through every step of their
final stage of life. Staff is available 24
hours a day for symptom management,
caregiver support, financial assistance and
bereavement aid. Hospice of Emanuel is
small and locally based, so their care is
personalized, immediate and dependable.
“Like some kind of angel,” is how Bob
Ranes describes the Hospice of Emanuel
nurse who showed up at his door last
November when he was helping his wife,
MaryAnn Ranes, stay comfortable during
her final weeks of life.
The Ranes’ story is
remarkable, and yet
typical of the
courageous families
who experience
Hospice of Emanuel
care. Bob and
MaryAnn were
childhood sweethearts
in the 1950s living in
Eugene, Oregon. In
1987, they reunited,
married and settled
in Turlock, where Bob
had lived for many
years. Bob retired from his long career in
school administration so the couple could
fully enjoy their new found love.
Soon after his retirement, Bob was
diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
“So we decided to travel while I could
still get around,” Bob says. “We bought a
fancy RV and traveled all over the country.
It was a wonderful life.”
Dear Friends,
Looking back on Emanuel Medical
Center’s 90th year, it’s easy to focus on the
new buildings and the new partnerships
and new programs. And believe us, we’re
proud of them all.
It’s more important, though, to remember
what all these buildings and programs
and partnerships mean in the lives of
real families.
For instance: Our new Critical Care
Center is the most complete and modern
emergency department in Stanislaus
County. But what we’re proud of isn’t the
building; it’s that last year we were able
to treat nearly 57,000 people in that
emergency department. Some were sick,
many were injured, and some just didn’t
have any other place to go. They found
care here.
Children who would have had to go to
hospitals out of town were able to stay
in Turlock because our new pediatric
hospitalists provided care here.
We delivered more than 3,000 babies,
conducted more than 10,000 surgeries,
and made some 17,000 home health and
hospice visits. Whatever the stage of life
and whatever the need, the people of this
community found care here, at Emanuel.
Not everyone could afford their
care, and Emanuel provided $39
million in community benefit activities
– uncompensated care, reimbursement
shortfalls and the like. We’ve worked hard
to attract new physicians to Turlock and
the communities nearby – bringing more
than two dozen to the area in the past two
years – and will continue those efforts.
And for all of this, we want to thank
you. None of our accomplishments
would be possible without the
tremendous support from this community,
and all these new buildings and
equipment and programs wouldn’t
have opened last year without your
generosity. But please don’t just look at
the buildings. Think about the people
they serve – the babies coming into the
world, the kids hurt and scared after
a bicycle spill, the families facing an
illness and the people at the end of
life, able to approach it with dignity
and grace.
Because of you, they find care here.
A Knockout 90th Year
There are good years, there are great
years, and then there’s 2007 – Emanuel
Medical Center’s 90th year.
“We accomplished many things in 2007,”
said Emanuel CEO and President John
Sigsbury, understating things wildly. “It
started on January second and just
kept going.”
It all began with the emergency room and
intensive care unit opening in the new
Emanuel Critical Care Center that second
day of January.
The Emanuel Medical Plaza followed soon
after, with the Stanford
Emanuel Radiation
Oncology Center
treating patients
by March.
The third floor of the
Critical Care Center
opened in May with
private patient rooms.
Emanuel launched
a partnership with
Children’s Hospital
Central California to
provide full-time pediatric
hospitalists at Emanuel,
helping local children
receive the care they
need right in Turlock.
Hospice of Emanuel
$351,418.65
The hospital opened
the Emanuel Physician’s
Center in October, not only bringing more
new primary care doctors to town, but
giving patients without a primary care
physician a convenient new option
for treatment.
And if that wasn’t enough, the hospital
began the Emanuel Cancer Endowment,
a permanent fund that will provide cancer
services to Turlock-area patients for
generations to come.
Shirley Pok, the hospital’s Vice President of
Development, led the fundraising
efforts that helped pay for many of
2007’s accomplishments, and even she’s
staggered by all they’ve done.
“You just have to be in awe of the growth
that’s happened here in the last seven
years,” she said. “The face of the hospital
has changed.”
Sigsbury said the changes have come
after years of planning and work,
and all of them have been made to
give Turlock the health services the
community deserves.
“Our focus is always on the highest
quality,” Sigsbury said. “We never want
providing the highest quality physicians,
the highest quality technology, and an
attractive facility to put it all in.”
And community support helps make it
happen. Since the hospital’s Legacy Circle
annual giving campaign began in 2001,
community volunteers have raised $9.2
million for Emanuel projects. Projects like
the Mary Stuart Rogers Birthing Center,
the Critical Care Center, and the newly
SPRING 2008
established Emanuel Cancer Endowment.
“It’s become an essential part of the
business model,” Sigsbury explained.
“You can’t rely on philanthropy for all
the funding, of course, but we really do
rely on community support to make these
projects happen.”
The community support has another
important benefit as well. It’s one of the
factors that helps the hospital attract new
doctors to the area.
“They see the commitment to the
community being made
by the hospital and the
commitment to the hospital
being made by the
community, and they know
they’ll have a successful
Sigsbury said.
So what’s left to do
in 2008? A lot of
reorganizing.
Emanuel plans to double the
size of its laboratories and
pharmacy and relocate the
pediatric unit to a new area
in the hospital. A cardiac
catheterization lab is also in
the works, but not scheduled
to open in 2008.
“This next year, we’re going
to try to get all of our 24/7 departments
in the right place with the right square
footage to do their jobs,” Sigsbury said.
“We’ve grown a lot and have to address
the infrastructure.”
The hospital has another long-term plan
as well.
“Our goal is to have a huge celebration
for our 100th anniversary,” Sigsbury said.
If the hospital’s 90th year is any indication,
it ought to be a heck of a party.
SPRING 2008
Hospice of Emanuel Helps Families at Life’s End
(Hospice, Cont. from page 1)
They slowed down a bit in 2003 when
Bob’s mobility started to slip. But their
days were still busy and happy, filled with
family, friends and each other.
In July 2007, life changed. MaryAnn was
75 and very active – swimming laps,
riding her bike – but all of sudden even a
trip to the store would wear her out. Their
family physician ran tests and didn’t like
what we saw. He sent her to Emanuel’s
cancer center, where doctors ran more
tests. They, too, didn’t like what they saw.
In November 2007, the Ranes learned that
MaryAnn had pancreatic cancer that had
migrated to her liver. Surgery, chemotherapy
and radiation were long-shot options.
“Doctors didn’t see much light at the end
Hospice of Emanuel staff Sandy Ricardo and
Tammy McCorkle with Bob Ranes.
of the tunnel, even with all that,” Bob says.
“MaryAnn said, ‘No.’ She just wanted to
live out the time she had left.”
Bob got around with a walker and a
scooter. His doctor worried that he
wouldn’t be able to care for MaryAnn
by himself.
“But I convinced him I could do it,”
Bob says.
“I was just standing there, blinking my
teary eyes, and they called all the shots,
gently and sweetly. I don’t know what I
would have done without them.”
-Bob Ranes
And he did, for a while, until MaryAnn
could no longer make it from the recliner
(where she preferred to sleep) to the
bathroom. Bob called his doctor and said,
“I can’t do it anymore.”
Within 20 minutes, a Hospice of Emanuel
nurse showed up at his door.
“She was like some kind of angel.” Bob
said. “I knew she couldn’t make MaryAnn
well, but she could make her comfortable.”
By the end of that day, Hospice of
Emanuel had a hospital bed set up in the
Ranes’ living room. They helped arrange
for 12-hour, and then 24-hour, home
health care.
“That allowed me to get some sleep,” Bob
says. “Not much, but some. So I was able
to stay healthy.”
Hospice of Emanuel staff did what they
always do: Whatever needed to be done.
They helped manage MaryAnn’s pain.
They answered questions – not over the
phone but in person. They showed up and
helped the couple prepare for and understand
what would come next.
Bob woke up fairly rested on the morning
of December 13, 2007. As always, he
made his way down the hall to MaryAnn’s
bed, took her hand, kissed her fingers and
said, “Good morning, sweetheart.”
MaryAnn was just barely awake. Bob
went to the kitchen and shared a cup of
coffee with the home health care nurse.
The nurse went to check on MaryAnn a
few minutes later. She returned in tears.
MaryAnn had passed away.
“I called Hospice immediately,” Bob says.
“They were here in 12 minutes. And they
did everything. They called the funeral
home, they stripped the bed. I was just
standing there, blinking my teary eyes,
and they called all the shots, gently and
sweetly. I don’t know what I would have
done without them.”
That’s the line you hear over and over
when people talk of their Hospice of
Emanuel experience. Nancy Santos lost
her husband, Melvin, on April 4, 2007.
She says Hospice helped her before,
during and after.
“They came out four months before my
husband died and took a huge burden off
my shoulders,” Nancy says. “They were
such a comfort. They helped us through the
process, step by step.”
Melvin was well until the last week of his
life, Nancy says.
“And he was never in horrible pain,”
she says. “They were so good about
managing his pain.”
Scott Atherton says Hospice of Emanuel
helped his mother, Dorothy Atherton,
through her final months of life.
“You should have seen her face when
they arrived at her home to sing Christmas
carols,” Scott says. “It made her feel so
special. They were so attentive to all of us,
when she was feeling badly and when
she was feeling well.”
That’s exactly the care Dr. MacLaren wants
Hospice of Emanuel to provide.
“Death is a part of life,” Dr. MacLaren
says. “We need to do all we can do to
ensure our patients live their fullest lives,
right to the very end.”
Chief of Medical Staff Sees Emanuel’s Role Clearly
On a particularly
cold and wet
November day in
Boston in 2001, Dr.
Amin Ashrafzadeh
decided to find a
job in California.
But it was more than
the weather that brought him to Turlock.
“The hospital is an incredibly important
pillar of a community,” he explained.
“You look at the schools, the
universities, the fine arts, and you
look at the hospitals.”
Ophthalmologist Dr. Ash (as he’s widely
known) liked what he saw in Turlock - and
not just at Emanuel.
“I love the people in this community,” he
said. “You can’t find a greater group of
people; they’re so appreciative and kind.
It’s a wonderful community to practice in.”
Dr. Ash came to Turlock in 2002 at the
Turlock Eye Physicians Medical Group,
where he is now a partner with Daniel
Lee, MD. He recently succeeded Dr. Tom
Wilson as the Chief of Medical Staff
at Emanuel.
An eye surgeon and a fellowship-trained
cataract, cornea and LASIK specialist, Dr.
Ash brings many advanced techniques
and ever-changing technology to Turlock
and Stanislaus County. How advanced?
“We offer bifocal lens implants during
cataract surgery” he said. “Then the
patients don’t need glasses after cataract
surgery at all, not for reading, not
for distance.”
Dr. Ash opened the Central Valley’s
only iLASIK vision center, the Northern
California Laser Center. iLASIK
(CustomVue, Iris Registration, IntraLase
LASIK eye surgery) is the most advanced
form of LASIK eye surgery and the only
laser vision correction surgery approved
for the U.S. Air Force, Navy TopGun
pilots and the NASA astronauts. Dr. Ash
is also one of only a handful of surgeons
worldwide performing many of the newer
and more advanced corneal transplant
techniques. In fact he is the first in
Northern California to offer a new laser
Legacy Circle 2007 Corporate Members
SPRING 2008
corneal transplant surgery called IntraLase
Enabled Keratoplasty.
“Our work can dramatically improve
a patient’s quality of life and it is very
gratifying,” he said. “It is very rewarding
to be able to provide some of the most
advanced, cutting-edge technology
available for patient care, and furthermore
to have the opportunity to introduce them
to this community.”
Dr. Ash’s role at Emanuel is to be the
liaison between the medical providers and
the hospital administration, helping ensure
excellence across the board.
“Emanuel is a wonderful place that
provides incredible care for its patients,”
he said. “We must support and nurture
this strong community pillar to continue
improving. I’m proud to be a part
of that.”
Dr. Ash’s office is at 880 Delbon Avenue,
and he can be reached at 634-2925.
You can find him on the web at
Emanuel Medical Center is grateful for our relationship with civic-minded businesses that distinguish themselves as “Corporate Partners of
SPRING 2008
(Volunteers, Cont. from page 1)
“I love seeing the students and our
veteran volunteers working side-by-side,”
says Regina Amador, director of the
hospital’s volunteer services. “Every day
I see teaching, guidance and new
friendships developing.”
More than a third of the volunteers are
students seeking experience and a testing
ground to make sure the medical
profession is where they want to be. The
rest are men and women – many of them
retired – who volunteer to stay active and
involved in a good cause.
“If I didn’t volunteer, I’d just be bored at
home,” says Corrie VandePol, who’s been
working in the gift shop for 10 years.
School age volunteers serve patients and
families, too!
“Besides, it makes me feel good.”
Volunteer Carol Litfin agrees.
“It feels good to give back to the
community,” she says, stocking shelves with
big-eyed stuffed animals. “And I like the
girls I work with. We’ve become friends.”
Colleagues wonder how Regina does it.
How does she manage to recruit so many
excellent volunteers?
Volunteers Give Much More Than Time
Volunteers show off their brand new uniforms.
“The truth is, volunteers are our best
recruiters,” she says. “People tell their
friends and they decide to volunteer, too.”
Placement and training are the keys to
retention, Regina says.
“It’s important to put volunteers in areas
where they can shine,” she says. “We try
to determine their strengths and interests so
they can serve where they best fit.”
And training matters, Regina says.
“You need to give them the tools they need
to get the job done.”
Back at the concierge desk at Emanuel’s
cancer center, Barbara Oliver says she’s
right where she belongs.
“I really get to know the patients and the
families who come here,” she says. “I greet
them when they enter and sometimes sit
with them while they wait. The other day, I
saw one of our patients at Taco Bell, and I
got to give him a hug there, too!”
“You get what you pay for”, the old adage
goes, but it’s not always true.
The compassionate, hard-working
volunteers at Emanuel Medical Center
prove sometimes you can find excellence
for free.
