BABY STEPS:
PREPARE YOUR BODY
FOR PREGNANCY PG 4
Leading Perspective
Dear Friends,
In this issue of HeartBeat, you’ll read the stories of four people in our community
who came to Emanuel Medical Center for emergency heart care.
Three were having heart attacks. One needed CPR in our Emergency Department
to restart her heart. One had a quadruple-bypass within hours of arriving
at Emanuel.
The fact that each of these people are able to tell their stories today is a testament
to the quality of the doctors, staff and technology that make up Emanuel’s cardiac
care program.
It’s also a testament to all the people who’ve supported the program by giving to
Legacy Circle, our annual giving campaign. Legacy Circle is committed to raising
$5 million over five years to support cardiac care at Emanuel. This year marks the
midpoint of that campaign, and we have a $1 million goal to reach in just
six weeks.
The money we’ve raised so far has helped pay for the cutting-edge equipment
in the Cardiac Cath and Interventional Lab and renovate a cardiac operating
suite. It’s helped recruit top medical talent to Turlock, which makes Emanuel’s
cardiovascular services second to none.
But we can’t stop here.
Already, we’ve had two heart attack patients arrive at our emergency room at the
same time. The next step in caring for our community is building two new surgical
suites dedicated to cardiac surgery, one with an integrated cath lab, so we can
treat two heart attack patients simultaneously. We’re continuing to invest in the
latest technology to best heal patients and committed to creating a comprehensive
program that will save lives in our community and help people get back to doing
the things they love.
Won’t you join hundreds of your neighbors by contributing to Legacy Circle and
supporting this great work? We would like to both express our sincere thanks to
our current Legacy Circle volunteers and donors, and invite everyone else to join
this great cause. Learn how to donate on page 10.
Thank you so much.
HEARTBEAT
Emanuel Cancer Center’s annual
Women’s Cancer Awareness Night Out
will sparkle a bit brighter this year
with reality TV star and E! News host
Giuliana Rancic.
Rancic co-anchors E! News alongside
Ryan Seacrest and is the co-star of E!’s
hugely popular Fashion Police team
alongside Joan Rivers. She’s been on the
red carpet for every mega-event in the
entertainment industry – the Oscars,
Grammy Awards and Golden Globes
– interviewing the stars and getting
breaking Hollywood scoops.
And she’s a breast cancer survivor.
Rancic’s battle with breast cancer –
and her decision to have a double
mastectomy – has been a major element
of her reality show, “Giuliana and Bill,”
this season.
“If you’ve paid any attention at all to
Hollywood news or the big awards
shows, you’ve almost certainly seen
Giuliana,” said Pennie Rorex, Emanuel’s
assistant vice president for corporate
communication and marketing. “She’s
been at E! News since 2002. In 2005,
she became solo anchor and managing
editor for the show, taking it from the
lowest rated show on the network to
number one. In 2006, she was joined
by Ryan Seacrest and E! News is now
the most popular entertainment news
program among young adults.”
Earlier this year, Rancic and her
husband announced they are becoming
parents. After struggling to conceive
for several years, they used in vitro
fertilization and a gestational surrogate
to conceive their first baby, which is
due this summer.
“We received an incredible amount of
love and prayers from viewers around
the world,” Rancic told E!, “and we
want to thank each and every one of
them for their love.”
Rancic was born in Naples, Italy, in
an impoverished neighborhood, and
moved to the United States when she
was a little girl. Her love affair with
television journalism began before she
could even speak English – her parents
couldn’t afford a tutor, so she learned
the language by watching TV. After
high school, Rancic attended the
University of Maryland, where
she received a bachelor’s degree in
journalism. She earned her master’s
degree in journalism from the American
University in D.C.
Rancic splits her time between Los
Angeles and Chicago. She resides
in both cities with her husband,
entrepreneur and talk show host,
Bill Rancic, who won the first season
of “The Apprentice.”
The Women’s Cancer Awareness
Night Out will be held on the
evening of October 16 at Monte Vista
Chapel in Turlock and will include
the always-moving cancer
survivors’ procession.
SUMMER SPRING 2012 3
Baby
Thinking of adding a new little bundle of joy to your
family? Then it’s time to get your body baby-ready.
Steps:
Prepare Your Body
for Pregnancy
GETTING READY
“Preparing for pregnancy should begin
with eliminating unhealthy habits,”
said Dr. Kathleen Kearns, a family
practice physician with Stanislaus
Health Services in Turlock and
Chief of Medical Staff at
Emanuel Medical Center.
“Any cigarette use, tobacco,
marijuana or alcohol should be
eliminated completely before trying to
conceive,” she said. “It can all harm
the baby.”
Step two is starting to take a prenatal
vitamin, as soon as you stop using
birth control.
by eating a well-balanced diet that
includes vegetables, fruit and lean
meat; and limiting caffeine. Pregnant
women should also avoid eating
fish that may contain high levels
of mercury, such as tuna, shark,
swordfish and mahi mahi.
Staying active can also help ensure
your good health during pregnancy.
Most pregnant women can safely
continue their regular fitness regimens,
or slowly build one.
“Exercise is encouraged,” Dr. Kearns
said. “If you were a runner prior
to becoming pregnant, you can
certainly continue.”
Six ways to prepare your
body for pregnancy
• Visit your physician for an
exam and consultation.
• Take prenatal vitamins that
contain 400 to 800 mg of
folic acid.
• Avoid alcohol, tobacco and
recreational drugs.
• Get as close to your ideal
body weight as possible.
• Eat a well-balanced diet.
• Stay active.
“Prenatal vitamins contain folic acid,
which helps prevent birth defects,”
Dr. Kearns said. “If you have a family
history of neural tube defects, your
doctor may prescribe a higher dose of
folic acid.”
Pre-pregnancy weight is another
important factor in ensuring the
long-term health of both you and
your baby-to-be.
“Being at your ideal body weight
before conception will go a long
way to preventing problems during
pregnancy and delivery,” said
Dr. Kearns. “Being overweight
or obese increases the chance of
miscarriage, c-section rates, diabetes,
high blood pressure and hemorrhage.”
Once you suspect you’re pregnant,
seeing a physician is a must. A
prenatal visit gets the medical process
started and helps you and your doctor
set goals for your pregnancy, and if
there are changes to medications or
other special circumstances, your
doctor can offer advice.
There are two cautions, however.
First, keep your exercise at an aerobic
level where you can carry on a
conversation while exercising. Second,
take care of your back. Muscles loosen
during pregnancy and it can be easier
to injure your back.
Taking care of yourself is essential to
taking care of your baby too. But even
if you’ve missed a few steps along the
way, it’s important
to begin to optimize
your health and
lifestyle habits
as soon as possible.
Wisdom
STAY SAFE WORKING
AROUND THE HOUSE
It’s Friday and there are projects to
build, gadgets to try out and repairs
to be made. But weekends are also
when many home accidents happen.
Here are some tips to stay safe while
working around the house, courtesy
of Dr. Ken Honsik, the chief medical
officer for occupational health and
safety at Turlock’s Romeo Medical
Clinic – Work Wellness.
1) Your body is your most important
tool: make sure it’s up to the task
• Get proper rest before tackling
a big project
• Stay hydrated. Pre-hydrate by
drinking a half-liter of water or
a sports drink
• Stay fueled. Eat well-balanced
meals throughout the day.
• Stay fit
“Hung-over, sleep deprived and
dehydrated is not the time to climb
a 20-foot ladder to clean out your
gutter,” Dr. Honsik says.
2) Plan your project and pace
your progress
“A lot of the injuries we see in the
clinic are repetitive-use injuries and
tendonitis,” he says. “If your body
is not used to doing a repetitive
activity, like digging post-holes,
doing it for two days straight can
cause problems. Even gardening can
cause injuries. Planning and pacing
are really important.”
3) Gear up correctly
• Wear proper safety gear for
whatever job you’re doing
– including eye protection,
hearing protection, gloves and
closed-toed shoes
• Protect your lungs with the
proper type of mask. Cloth
dust masks are just for dust.
Chemicals and solvents require
different types of filter masks,
available in the safety section
of any good home improvement
store
• Maintain your tools. Clean,
sharp tools not only make a job
easier, they’re safer
“The most dangerous tool is the
dull, rusty tool that’s been sitting in
a drawer for years,” Dr. Honsik says.
4) Get help
“We see a lot of back injuries from
people trying to lift too much,”
Dr. Honsik says. “Enlist help. The
cost of the pizza you promise as
payment is a lot less than a
back injury.”
Also, remember to lift with your
legs, not your back. Another time
to bring in a spotter is any time you
climb an extension ladder.
5) Be aware of your work site and
others around it
• Power tools and standing water
are a deadly combination
• Keep your work site neat so you
don’t create your own hazards
• Put away tools at the end of the
day so children don’t stumble
across them
“Remember that life’s a marathon
not a sprint,” Dr. Honsik says.
“Take proper safety precautions,
then you can sit back at the end
of the day and admire your
weekend’s work.”
SAVING HEARTS
AND SAVING LIVES:
Emanuel’s Cardiac Care Program
Delivers on its Promise
6
HEARTBEAT
When Emanuel Medical Center began developing a cardiac care program to
serve the greater Turlock area, the need was clear. When Legacy Circle began
raising money to support the cardiac program two years ago, the promise
was also clear: Top-quality cardiac care in our community will save lives.
Promise kept.
“We worked so hard to bring these
services to Emanuel Medical Center
and Turlock because we knew a
quality cardiac program here would
save lives,” said Emanuel President
and CEO John Sigsbury. “I am
absolutely, 100 percent certain that
we have. And everyone involved with
cardiovascular services is proud of our
treatment and outcomes.”
In fact, Emanuel’s program is
impressing other people as well.
The Joint Commission is a national
organization that inspects and
accredits health care providers. In
March, Joint Commission surveyors
visited Emanuel to review its open
heart program – and they found
nothing to improve. In fact, the
Commission asked Emanuel to write
up part of its program to share on the
Joint Commission website.
“In 33 years of hospital
administration, I have never received
a visit from the Joint
Commission that
resulted in no
recommended
action steps,”
Sigsbury
said. “To
have it
suggested
that our
program
be shared as
a Best Practice
on the Joint
Commission website is truly
an accomplishment.”
This fall, Legacy Circle, Emanuel’s
annual giving program, begins year
three of a five-year effort to raise $5
million to support the program. The
goal of the six-week campaign will be
to raise $1 million.
The money will help Emanuel take the
next step in its cardiovascular services
program – building two new dedicated
cardiac operating suites. One will be
a traditional open heart operating
room, and the other will be a cuttingedge
hybrid suite that combines the
type of scanner used in a cath lab with
a tilting operating table – allowing
surgeons to perform incredibly
delicate procedures.
The new facilities will allow physicians
to perform even more procedures in
Turlock and, most importantly,
treat two emergency heart attack
patients simultaneously.
Here are testimonies of just a few of
the many people that experienced the
lifesaving services first-hand.
Irma England
At 62, Patterson’s Irma
England looks like the
picture of health. Raising
her 11-year-old grandson
Caleb keeps her fit and
active. “I’m out playing
soccer with Caleb and his
friends,” she said.
“I thought I was super healthy with
no problems.”But on April 19 of this
year, that changed.
“I was talking to a friend of mine on
the phone and felt uncomfortable in
my chest, a little nauseous and like I
needed to catch my breath,” she said.
Irma’s daughter Claralyn came right
over. “She looked at me and said
‘You’re having a heart attack,’” Irma
remembered. “I said no I wasn’t, but
she said she was going to call 911.”
“In just minutes the ambulance was
there,” Irma said, “and the driver
called ahead to Emanuel.” The trip
to Turlock was quick, and Emanuel’s
emergency cardiac team was waiting
for her when she arrived.
“They told me it was going to be
OK,” she said. Before she knew it,
Irma was in the Cardiac Cath
and Interventional Lab, and
the cardiologist was guiding an
angioplasty balloon up through her
femoral artery to the blockage
in her heart.
“I took a breath and it felt like life
came back to me,” Irma said. “The
doctor asked me how I felt and I said
I felt great.”
Irma was home the next day. On
Monday, she was back to her full and
active life, and grateful to everyone
who helped her. “I’m so thankful
to everyone, especially Emanuel
Medical Center,” she said. “I can’t say
SUMMER 2012
7
enough about the nurses at Emanuel
– they were so kind and loving and
supportive. That will not
be forgotten.”
Scott King
As a former Turlock
Police officer,
Scott King isn’t
given to panic
or overreaction.
But when he felt a
sudden pain in his
chest early
last March, he
knew something
was wrong.
“I was going over an agenda
for a meeting when I felt a massive
pain in my heart area, broke out in a
sweat and felt my left side tingling,”
he said. “My co-worker asked if I
wanted them to call
an ambulance.”
King, the security
manager at Hilmar
Cheese Company,
said no. His
wife, who also
works at the
company’s Hilmar
headquarters,
drove him
to Emanuel’s
Emergency Department.
“I walked up and got the
receptionist’s attention and told her I
thought I was having a heart attack,”
he said. “Within a minute, I was
whisked out the door and was in a
bed with an EKG and oxygen and had
blood drawn. Just a few minutes later,
the interventional cardiologist was
at the door.”
The interventional cardiologist was
ready to perform an angioplasty and
clear any blockages, but Scott didn’t
need it.
8 HEARTBEAT
“The blood work came back negative,”
he said. “I didn’t have a heart attack.”
The cardiac team did an echocardiogram
on Scott’s heart and saw it
was enlarged. He was
admitted overnight.
“The next day, Friday,
I did a stress echo
and a bubble study,”
he said. “Over the
weekend I felt great,
and on Tuesday came
back for another
kind of echo so
they could look at my
valves and check
for disease.”
“I was really impressed,” Scott
said. “From the moment I told them I
thought I was having a heart attack and
was whisked away, it was amazing. A
few years ago, they couldn’t have
done that in Turlock. Now I
have complete confidence.”
Verdeenia
Harris
Even though her
mom, dad and
both brothers had
had heart attacks,
Turlock’s Verdeenia
Harris didn’t think it
would happen to her.
“I had myself convinced I
was a special case,” said the
active 75-year-old.“I really
thought I was in
great shape.
I’ve exercised
for years.”
So when the pain
and nausea hit
the night of April
3, Verdeenia didn’t
even think heart attack.
She took a Gas X and
hoped it would help. When it didn’t,
she called for her husband Jim and had
him call 911.
The ambulance arrived, and paramedics
immediately began treating Verdeenia for
a possible heart attack. She asked to go to
a Modesto hospital, where Jim had open
heart surgery in 1999.
“That’s where he had gone, and I didn’t
know they had anything in Turlock,”
she said. The paramedic started driving,
then pulled over to talk to Verdeenia.
“He told me I might not have 20
minutes more,” she said. “That got
my attention.”
The ambulance driver told her Emanuel
had a good cardiac unit and he would
call ahead and they’d be waiting.
Verdeenia trusted his judgment and
came to Emanuel. There, the team
diagnosed four coronary arteries
more than 90 percent blocked and
called the cardiothoracic and
vascular surgeons.
Verdeenia had a quadruple bypass that
night, with no complications and no
permanent damage to her heart. She
was on her feet quickly and back to her
regular routine within a few weeks.
Verdeenia thanks God for
Emanuel’s program.
“The right people were there to receive
me. They’ll be there for you too.”
Surinder Rai
Surinder Rai’s heart
attack began while
she was cooking
breakfast at
her home
in Livingston.
“All of a sudden, there
was so much pain,” she
said. “The pain in my chest
was so sharp, my eyes kind of
blacked out.”
Surinder’s first thought wasn’t a heart
attack, however. She had breast cancer
many years before, and thought the pain
might somehow be cancer-related. She
woke her husband and he
called 911.
It took several precious minutes for the
ambulance to arrive.
“By the time they got here, I couldn’t
really breathe,” Surinder remembers.
“It felt like something was stuck in my
throat and I couldn’t get any air.”
Paramedics started treatments for a
heart attack. Surinder thought they
would take her to Modesto, where she’s
had other treatments, but the medics
took her to the closest heart-attack
receiving center – Emanuel.
“It’s a good thing they took me to
Emanuel,” she said. “Modesto would
have been too far.”
“Then my vision started getting real
bad,” she said. Surinder had another
heart attack and Emanuel’s cardiac
emergency team had to perform CPR in
the emergency room to bring her back.
When her heart was beating again, they
took her to the cath lab and cleared her
blocked coronary artery.
Surinder spent a couple of nights in the
hospital, and felt sore for several days
because of the CPR. But she was back
to full activity within a few weeks, and
realizes how fortunate she was.
“A few weeks later, we were driving
to Modesto and noticed how long it
took to get from Turlock to Modesto.
I wouldn’t have made it,” she said.
“Those 25 minutes saved me.”
Recognizing the
Symptoms
If your body was a performance car,
there would be a warning light on
the dashboard to alert you when
something was wrong with your heart.
Unfortunately, the symptoms of a heart
attack aren’t always so clear and
can be mistaken or dismissed as
something minor.
“Heart attacks are rarely like you see in
the movies when someone grabs their
chest and falls to the floor,” explains
Chris O’Brien, Emanuel’s Chest Pain
Coordinator. “The symptoms can be
more subtle, and can differ in women
and men. Symptoms can be a little more
vague in women.”
If you think you’re having a heart
attack, it’s important to call 911
right away rather than come to the
hospital on your own.
Heart attack symptoms can include:
• Pain that travels down one or
both arms
• Pain, pressure, burning, aching
or tightness in the chest
• Shortness of breath
• Jaw pain
• Fatigue
• Anxiety or a feeling of dread
• Nausea or vomiting
• An unexplained feeling of
fullness
• Back pain
• Weakness
The Delta Blood Bank
and Turlock Blood Donors
Fill a Growing Need
As Emanuel Medical Center
performs more open heart
surgeries and other procedures,
there is one critical supply it can’t
just order anywhere – blood.
That’s why the hospital has a
partnership with Delta Blood Bank,
which collects local blood from
donors and distributes it to the
hospital. “It’s a triangle of support,”
explained Annie Stevenson, the
director of marketing for the blood
bank. “It takes donors, Delta and
the hospital.”
Delta works each year to increase
the number of donors and pints of
blood it collects.
“We have to increase what comes
in to meet the need of what goes
out,” Stevenson said. “Fewer than
40 percent of people are eligible
to donate blood, and of those, only
five percent do.”
To increase donations, Delta has
a loyalty program that provides a
variety of rewards for donors from
local businesses. Stevenson said.
“We appreciate our Turlock blood
donors and business supporters, so
in turn we can help save the lives of
all of our neighbors.”
We are pleased to introduce our 2012 Legacy Circle volunteers.
These teams are made up of dedicated community and employee
volunteers who are committed to helping Emanuel save lives.
Three years ago, Legacy Circle launched a five-year campaign to
raise $5 million to bring comprehensive cardiac care services to
our community. The response has been fantastic, and the program
is saving hearts and saving lives in our community.
This year, the challenge is to raise $1 million in just six weeks,
and we know this community can do it! Won’t you help? Please
return the attached donation envelope indicating your pledge today.
Thank you for your kindness.
PLEASE JOIN US!
Emanuel’s cardiac program is already saving lives in our
community, but there’s more to be done!
When Britt and Brian Kelleher
walked into Emanuel
Cancer Center in 2008, Britt
had just learned she had breast cancer.
“I was kind of devastated and lost,” she
said. Cancer Center Concierge Nancy
Daley saw the Kellehers come in, scared
and alone. She didn’t let them feel that
way very long. “Nancy Daley eyed
the situation and took it upon herself
to make us feel comfortable,” Britt
remembers. “She was like a breath of
fresh air.”
For the difference she’s made in the
lives of cancer patients, Nancy Daley
was honored by the American Cancer
Society earlier this year with the Lane
Adams Quality of Life Award. She was
one of 11 people selected nationally to
receive the award.
“This award is for so many people at
the Cancer Center,” Nancy said. “It’s
for the patients, their families and
everybody I worked with. I learned
from all of them. My motto was that
when someone walked through the
door, they were the only person in the
world with cancer. They were the most
important person at that moment,
and I tried to make them feel that way
through their whole journey.”
“I have worked in oncology for more
than 30 years but I have never seen
the impact of one person on so many,”
wrote oncology nurse Debbie Tuttle in
Nancy’s nomination. “Young, old, well,
sick, non-English speaking patients
are all drawn to the love that Nancy
displays for each and every one of them
as they come through the door for their
oncology visits.”
Nancy says she learned how to live
with cancer from Jessica Everett, a
Turlock girl who battled leukemia for
three years with grace, sass and wit.
Jessica’s House, Emanuel’s new grief
support program for children, is named
in her honor. “I was Jessica’s teacher for
three years while she went through the
treatments,” Nancy said.
In addition to greeting patients as a
concierge, Daley also worked with two
others to help start Monkey Business,
a support group for children whose
parents or another family member
have cancer. Since its launch in 2008,
Monkey Business has been one of the
most successful and valued support
groups at Emanuel.
Although she’s taken a leave from the
concierge role to help her husband
through cancer treatments, Daley
continues to work with Monkey
Business and is a facilitator at Jessica’s
House, where her smile and spirit
continue to touch people’s hearts.
Jessica’s House, please phone
Have a medical question? Ask Emanuel’s Experts!
Does sugar make kids hyper?
Many parents believe it does, and it’s become a
commonly accepted health myth. However, numerous
studies have consistently shown sugar doesn’t affect
behavior. One study found parents who were told their kids had
sugar were more likely to report behavior problems – even though
in reality their kids had consumed a sugar-free drink. Bottom line:
Don’t blame the sugar!
Dr. David Canton, Vice President Medical Affairs
I don’t drink milk when I’m sick because I’ve
heard milk makes you phlegmy. True or false?
False, although most people don’t
believe it. In fact, one study of 330
patients reported that nearly two out
of three believed milk increases phlegm production.
But it’s not true. In one experiment, volunteers were
infected with the cold virus, and some of them
drank a lot of milk, as well. The weight of the nasal
secretions did not increase in those who drank
more milk, nor was it associated with cough or
congestion. And don’t you just have to love
any experiment that measures the weight of
nasal secretions!
Dr. Mark Davenport, Internal Medicine
My dad believes food picked up from
the floor is safe to eat, if you get to it
quickly. I think it’s gross. Is the
five-second rule true?
Scientists have put the five-second rule to
the test and found that food that comes
into contact with a tile or wood floor does
pick up large amounts of bacteria. Not all bacteria make
you sick, of course, but it can. Being scientists, they also
tested what happens when you drop food on
carpet, and it turns out that
food doesn’t pick up
many germs when
it hits carpet, but it
does pick up
carpet fuzz.
Dr. Alexander Evens,
Infection Control
I am worried about my children swimming after
they eat. Shouldn’t they wait at least an hour
before they jump in?
Put your worries to the side. The old belief is that after you eat, more blood
flows to the digestive system so your muscles won’t have enough blood to
exercise strenuously and you could cramp up and drown. Interesting theory,
perhaps, but it doesn’t happen. (The human body is too smart to let itself
drown in order to digest a sandwich.) You may feel a little tired after a big
meal, but your children will be OK to enjoy the pool.
Dr. Edward Holm, Internal Medicine
