Leading Perspective Dear Friends, In this issue of HeartBeat, you’ll read the stories of four people in our community who came to Emanuel Medical Center for emergency heart care. Three were having heart attacks. One needed CPR in our Emergency Department to restart her heart. One had a quadruple-bypass within hours of arriving at Emanuel. The fact that each of these people are able to tell their stories today is a testament to the quality of the doctors, staff and technology that make up Emanuel’s cardiac care program. It’s also a testament to all the people who’ve supported the program by giving to Legacy Circle, our annual giving campaign. Legacy Circle is committed to raising $5 million over five years to support cardiac care at Emanuel. This year marks the midpoint of that campaign, and we have a $1 million goal to reach in just six weeks. The money we’ve raised so far has helped pay for the cutting-edge equipment in the Cardiac Cath and Interventional Lab and renovate a cardiac operating suite. It’s helped recruit top medical talent to Turlock, which makes Emanuel’s cardiovascular services second to none. But we can’t stop here. Already, we’ve had two heart attack patients arrive at our emergency room at the same time. The next step in caring for our community is building two new surgical suites dedicated to cardiac surgery, one with an integrated cath lab, so we can treat two heart attack patients simultaneously. We’re continuing to invest in the latest technology to best heal patients and committed to creating a comprehensive program that will save lives in our community and help people get back to doing the things they love. Emanuel Cancer Center’s annual Women’s Cancer Awareness Night Out will sparkle a bit brighter this year with reality TV star and E! News host Giuliana Rancic. Rancic co-anchors E! News alongside Ryan Seacrest and is the co-star of E!’s hugely popular Fashion Police team alongside Joan Rivers. She’s been on the red carpet for every mega-event in the entertainment industry – the Oscars, Grammy Awards and Golden Globes – interviewing the stars and getting breaking Hollywood scoops. And she’s a breast cancer survivor. Rancic’s battle with breast cancer – and her decision to have a double mastectomy – has been a major element of her reality show, “Giuliana and Bill,” this season. “If you’ve paid any attention at all to Hollywood news or the big awards shows, you’ve almost certainly seen Giuliana,” said Pennie Rorex, Emanuel’s assistant vice president for corporate communication and marketing. “She’s been at E! News since 2002. In 2005, she became solo anchor and managing editor for the show, taking it from the lowest rated show on the network to number one. In 2006, she was joined by Ryan Seacrest and E! News is now the most popular entertainment news program among young adults.” Earlier this year, Rancic and her husband announced they are becoming parents. After struggling to conceive for several years, they used in vitro fertilization and a gestational surrogate to conceive their first baby, which is due this summer. “We received an incredible amount of love and prayers from viewers around the world,” Rancic told E!, “and we want to thank each and every one of them for their love.” Rancic was born in Naples, Italy, in an impoverished neighborhood, and moved to the United States when she was a little girl. Her love affair with television journalism began before she could even speak English – her parents couldn’t afford a tutor, so she learned the language by watching TV. After high school, Rancic attended the University of Maryland, where she received a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She earned her master’s degree in journalism from the American University in D.C. Rancic splits her time between Los Angeles and Chicago. She resides in both cities with her husband, entrepreneur and talk show host, Bill Rancic, who won the first season of “The Apprentice.” The Women’s Cancer Awareness Night Out will be held on the evening of October 16 at Monte Vista Chapel in Turlock and will include the always-moving cancer survivors’ procession.
