THE SUIT MAGAZINE EDITOR’S PICK DISTINGUISHED BUSINESS AWARD CORPORATE EXCELLENCE Improving Effectiveness – and Making a Difference BY ANDREA LEHNER When Dustin Moskovitz worked late into the night from his Harvard dorm room on the fledgling concept that would later become Facebook, he could not have anticipated the long-reaching impact Facebook would have in changing the way people of all ages and demographics interact. The global effect of modern social media has changed everything from family correspondence to consumerism and politics. Now, Moskovitz – who notably sold off his Facebook shares and quickly became known as one of the youngest living self-made billionaires – is using his high-tech know-how to tackle outdated business communication systems and is also using his new-found wealth to maximize the effectiveness of philanthropic giving. Moskovitz’s latest endeavor, called Asana, replaces traditional email correspondence. Email can be cumbersome, even leading to miscommunication between team members. By using a new software technology, Asana streamlines and integrates communication directly into the fabric of team communication and project management. “The salient difference between Asana and the software that’s come before, is that all of the individual contributors use it. It’s the place where you have conversations with your coworkers,” Moskovitz said in a 2012 interview, following Asana’s beta rollout in 2011. Today, Asana is the preferred choice of tens of thousands of organizations, and is widely recognized for its usability and organizational efficiency tools. Moskovitz recently noted that Asana works because it fosters transparency and accountability. This is a core concept of both the software and the Asana team. In a recent interview about fostering productivity, Moskovitz indicated how the corporate culture at Asana replicates what the software provides users. “It’s important for everyone to be on the same page. It’s really easy in any company, but especially in startups, to have mission drift and to have people with different ideas of where they think the company should be going. It’s really important that you’re able to tell a unified story that says this is the direction – this is what we are trying to achieve.” By developing and investing in technological advancements, including ground-breaking artificial intelligence learning systems, Moskovitz remains committed to creating new platforms that improve productivity, efficiency and interpersonal communication. But his energy does not stop there. Moskovitz and his wife, Cari Tuna, are proving they are equally committed to advancing the prosperity of human progress through effective altruistic giving. As founders of Good Ventures, Moskovitz and Tuna have pledged to give back half of their reported 5.2 billion dollar net worth “to help humanity thrive.” Good Ventures, through the collaborative Open Philanthropy Project with GiveWell, seeks to establish a grant-funding and investment strategy that helps determine which charitable organizations will make the most impact in their respective categories. Mirroring the success of his tech ventures, Moskovitz once again calls upon transparency and advocates that by opening discussions, sharing research, mistakes, decisions and results, both donors and recipients can get more mileage out of the philanthropic process to “serve the world more effectively.” In this manner, Moskovitz and Good Ventures hope to mitigate the philanthropic pitfalls common to closed-door protocols of the past while at the same time, encouraging innovation and the kind of openness that can maximize the use of finite resources.
