This chapter provides an overview of <strong>the</strong> current social and economic<br />
environments <strong>in</strong> Nova Scotia with respect to <strong>the</strong>ir importance to <strong>the</strong> Scotian<br />
<strong>Shelf</strong> and sets <strong>the</strong> context for <strong>the</strong> ocean use sectors outl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> subsequent<br />
pages. Although <strong>the</strong> focus is <strong>the</strong> Scotian <strong>Shelf</strong>, much of <strong>the</strong> data relates to <strong>the</strong><br />
prov<strong>in</strong>ce as a whole. Unless specialised studies have been undertaken, it is<br />
often not possible to separate Scotian <strong>Shelf</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation from prov<strong>in</strong>cial <strong>in</strong>formation,<br />
particularly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> socio-economic context. The socio-economic environment<br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes demographic and economic considerations, public health and<br />
safety, culture, and aes<strong>the</strong>tic factors. Humans have been an <strong>in</strong>tegral part of<br />
Nova Scotia and activities on <strong>the</strong> Scotian <strong>Shelf</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> earliest settlers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
region. To understand <strong>the</strong> human impact to <strong>the</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e ecosystem, we must<br />
consider <strong>the</strong> historic and current patterns of human activity with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region.<br />
